    When I first looked at this game I thought it was a mindless, hack and slash, mash the attack button, anime game. What I actually got was a challenging action rpg with a deep story, very likable characters, and deep exploration. Fantastic game

      Strictly speaking, all games are just button smashing. You push some buttons, something happens. But yeah, I get the mindless part. Not like there is anything wrong with hack x slash games but to me they severly lack in progression that makes you keep going.

      @@pandaman1331 the problem I have with those games is that you’ve essentially mastered the combat before the games even started. Good combat systems require learning and dedication to be mastered. And with games like Nioh, you may think you have it mastered but the combat goes much deeper than you thought.

      Play Ys 7 too. It's gameplay and graphics might not be on Ys 8's level but it was the game that changed the Ys concept to what it is today and it's music and story can easily keep up with Ys 8. I'll also continue with 9 after I finished 8. Not like I'm in hurry though. You know how you know you are playing an absolutely amazing masterpiece? When you have piled up a wishlist over 20+ games and still take your time playing through your current game.

    Why you should play Ys VIII: Because it's hands down one of the greatest RPG's ever made.
    For real, the characters, the setting, the exploration, the gameplay, the music, how all of the various systems fit together into a cohesive whole... From top to bottom, Ys VIII is charming, unforgettable, and consistently fun to play and control.
    Ys may not have the budget of Final Fantasy... but Ys doesn't force you into ducking under the umpteenth object or having you squeeze through countless tight spaces, thus killing the momentum (Lookin' at you Final Fantasy 7 Remake).
    Ys VIII is a rare gem. Play it if you can.

      I like the fact that it's continuing story. There are far too many JRPGS that reset the setting and characters with each new iteration. Having one world and one recurring protagonist allowed me to get more into the lore without being doused in exposition.

      Ff7 remake is overrated hot garbage disguised behind hype and graphics. If it has no names or relationship to the original game, everyone would hate it. It's just milking/pandering to nostalgia to gamers with no taste. I look forward to playing This game some time though.

      KInd of seems to be everyone's experience. I didn't have any expectations for this series but Ys 7 turned out to be my introduction into the arpg genre. I used to only play turn-based jrpgs before that. And Ys 8 consolidated it and officially made me an arpg fan. That's why I keep telling people that reviews are only and outliner to sort out games your are definitely not for you but to find out wether you really like a game or not, you simply have to try to play it. And I'm glad I tried it.

    Ys VIII is just so much fun. I like Ys origins a LOT too but Ys VIII was just impressive. That moment you reach the top of the mountain and see the entirety of how much of the rest of the island you have to explore ...

      True. People for once didn't exaggerate when they told me how good this game is. You should give Ys 7 a go too. It might not be quite on 8's level but it is also a masterpiece. Maybe not in terms of gameplay and art style/graphics but it can easily keep up in music and the story might even be superior to Ys 8.

    One of the things I loved about Ys VIII in particular is how natural the exploration felt. Yes, it's basically a Metroidvania disguised as an Action RPG, but that kind of game just lends itself to exploring mysterious places like the Island of Seiren. Conversely, Ys IX didn't really feel as enjoyable with its exploration. Where the Island of Seiren slowly opens up as you find more mysterious artifacts and castaways to help you overcome obstacles, the City of Balduq just... didn't. The only thing that really limited where you could go in Ys IX were some magic barriers, and while there was an explanation in the game for why they were there, it just didn't feel as exciting to explore a city where magic barriers stand in the way as it did to explore a mysterious, uncharted island where you needed to find these power-ups to actually explore it. So the exploration is really the only reason I found Ys VIII superior to Ys IX.

    Man, I love Ys 8, it's such a great game. I got it back when it first came out on Switch and now that I have a PC I've started going through the rest of the Ys series, as well as the Trails series.
    3:30 Speaking of Trails, there's actually a bunch of references here and there to the Ys games in it. This moment in the video reminded me of one treasure chest phrase, from Trails in the Sky SC, which says: "Adol is here to wreck boats and kick butt, and he's all out of boats."

    I can only agree on your opinion. I love this game, for me it is the peak of the Ys series and a modern masterpiece.
    The only thing I can complain about are the raid battles, which often appear while you really don't need them.
    I've finished Ys IX last week. It has some small mechanical improvements and I like the cast (excluding Dana) better, but overall I still prefer Lacrimosa of Dana.

      Oh wow that would certainly make those later raids a challenge.

  • @Veo87
    @Veo87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Yep! I've never liked JRPG's and even the ones that grabbed my attention were never able to grab my attention enough to actually finish them. That was until I decided to try Ys 8 earlier this year. I loved that one so much that I beat it and then immediately played it again and got about half way through before getting other games to play. It holds a special place in my heart now.
    One good thing about the slower pace of the first half of the game is that it gives you time to really get to know the side characters and come to care about them, which really raises the tension as the stakes rise in the second half of the game. The game gives you a reason to care that things are. . . . Well, I won't spoil it here.
    One of my favorite things is how well the game's story and its mechanics connect. You explore to find more survivors so that they can join your village and contribute their unique skillsets, which allows you to do things like upgrade weapons, make potions, farm for food that can be used for healing and cooking meals, etc. These all help with advancing in the gameplay mechanics, but they also make complete sense in the story. Adol and the others WANT to find survivors so that they can get everyone off of the island. The survivors WANT to contribute their unique skills to helping you and everyone else on the island flourish while they're stuck there. Interacting with the characters and getting them to like you can help increase your stats, which helps advance gameplay mechanics, but it also makes sense that the people stuck on this island with each other in a close-knit community would learn to get along and grow to regard each other and friends or family. The game's world, like many games, have many "roadblocks" that prevent you from advancing in the world until you find enough survivors to help you remove the obstacles. This is obviously a classic gameplay mechanic where you can only explore certain areas early on in the game and you can only advance to other areas when you fulfill certain conditions, but it also makes sense contextually because natural road blocks can only be removed if there are enough people to help remove everything blocking the path. It's pretty common in games for a map to fill itself in as you explore more of the world, but it's also a goal of the characters to have a better understanding of the island and its layout, so creating a detailed map of the island is important to the characters as well, not just a gameplay mechanic. Adol is asked by the characters to make a map, so he's literally drawing it.
    I played it on Switch, which had significant performance issues, but it didn't stop me from enjoying it so much. I digitally downloaded it from the eShop when it was on sale, but now I really wish I could get a physical copy of the game for PS4. It's looking like it's difficult to find a physical copy of the game.

    Been a Trails fan since Sky FC first came out in English, but did not really try Ys, because it was repeatedly called by some fans as the Falcom franchise that focuses more on gameplay and less on story, and my interest in Falcom games stemmed entirely from the story side of things. (Gameplay is more than serviceable in Trails, but it never felt particularly special to me)

    Dude, I'll just say it. In a spoiler kinda way, so...
    This game switched from me enjoying the gameplay and finding the little dream cutscenes cute to... suddenly having two timelines intervowen, and weird mystery... And then the scene when you make it to the temple, and what you actually find there... That's when the game turned from good to "Oh my god what is happening, why is it happening, I must know, I can't stop now." with every new corner I peeked around.
    That moment when you make it over that mountain. That's some kind of magic to me, like the switch had flipped, and suddenly I was in for such a ride.
    That let me well overlook the fact that the combat actually has the same problem that Super Eyepatch Wolf talked about in his FF15 video - you can just cram any healing item into your characters in the pause menu, and that alone had me 'win' fights that I shouldn't have while getting absolutely bodied left and right by attacks. I'm grateful for the fact I didn't have to spend half a day on one boss at time (Hello Oath in Felghana...), but yeah, it may not be for everyone.
    Anyway, I just had to kinda reflect cause oh my god I just finished this game and it was awesome, I'm still thinking about it all. So uhm, don't mind me I guess!

    I'm on chapter 6 & this game is legit 1 of the best RPGs I played! The best Falcom game too, Trails is fine but Ys 8 is a superior game to every other Falcom game. It's the only game (outside of Xenoblade 2) that reminded me of the awesome Skies of Arcadia, with its spirit, the setting & the whole thing about discovering locations!
    One of the coolest things about this game is that it has so many aspects about its gameplay yet it never lingers too much on any of them, it has marvelous pacing. The story is blowing me away too, didn't expect this at all!

    For some reason I only ever played the Pokemon and FFVII games. Which is surreal since I did play other games before and after them but only sporadically. I decided to make a wish list and play through all games that seemed interesting. It ended with 20+ games. And now I'm starting to think that FFVII has only been my favorite game so far because I haven't played many other games. Ys 7 might be equal to FFVII but it's Ys VIII that is sersiouly challenging FFVII's top spot as my all time favorite game. It actually is better, it's just my FFVII pride that makes me refuse to accept it. Ocotopath Traveler might be better than FFVII too. Can't wait to play through the other games too and see on what kind of gems and masterpieces I have missed out on. But I'm in no hurry to finish Ys VIII as fast as possible. I enjoyed LoD very much, clocking in 60h, clearing all quests, affection events and maps (and all but one fish), but the enemy designs left a little to be desired- I really didn't enjoy the dinosaur enemies because of their HP sponginess and their ability to stunlock you. I also didn't enjoy the parry- the timing was weird for me coming in from Seven and Celceta (whose timing definitely felt different from LoD), and I don't like the lengthy 2 second cooldown. However, I will admit that LoD has the best setting, scenario and systems out of all the Ys games I've played even if I didn't enjoy the combat as much. It was a very pretty island, and they made exploration and talking to the NPCs very satisfying. I do think I'd enjoy LoD more if this was my first Ys, so I'm happy to endorse it as an excellent jumping in point to the series, it just does a few things differently from previous Yses that I can now benchmark against.
    I'm starting Ys IX and the transition to Ys IX is definitely smoother than my transition to Ys VIII since I'm now more familiar with the parry timing. I really, really appreciate the verticality of IX, it harkens back to my favourite moments of Oath in Felghana. Overall, VIII and IX feel different from Seven and Celceta, but the console party Yses focus on polishing and integrating their respective unique core mechanics into the Ys formula, and that really puts VIII and IX a foot above Seven and Celceta, even if I have a soft spot for Seven and Celceta. They still don't beat Oath in Felghana in my books though.

      Seven and Celceta really are different from 8 and 9 in ways that other systems didn’t have within their games. The Napishtim system didn’t ever drastically change but the party system did somewhat, so I understand the adjustment. Hope you continue to enjoy Ys IX

    Great game. I'd give it 9/10. Its 2 biggest faults imo are...
    1. The map is absolute ass and usually not very helpful.
    2. I think the game needed 1-2 more party members. With at one or both joining in chapter 2.

    Ok ok fine, this game is amazing in almost all it does... "Almost".
    The world building that they have amazingly and meticulously done in all of the past titles and connected the titles was pretty much yeeted out the window. Which is my biggest gripe with this game. I loved this series because of the world building and now its gone...

      So I've seen people saying that but I always viewed the ending as being isolated to the Isle of Seiren with the changes. Basically the events just allowed the world to continue for another cycle and didn't reset anything that had previously happened, just took away the memories of it from most of the castaways.

    This game is absolutely flawless on PC. It's obviously the best version. This just goes to show how Metacritic is a heavily flawed system. Not to mention that games journalists have been a joke for nearly around 8 years now. These disgusting journos are of course the ones responsible for what the final Metacritic score is. We're talking about the same kind of people who gave GOD HAND of all things only a 3/10. Journos are a joke, so support your friendly neighborhood TH-camrs and streamers that review games with similar tastes to your own, that's just about the only time when reviews are useful. Hell, just check the Steam reviews for a game you're considering, they're ALWAYS pretty damn accurate.

    • @CommRio
      @CommRio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely advise checking sources but the meta critic is an accurate assessment of the initial thoughts on the game because the PC port was a catastrophe upon initial release. The version we play now is the fixed one from a few years ago instead of the initial one and thank god for it.

    One of the best games I ever played. I played it on my Switch and it is much better than Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade Chronicles combines. You ask why. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 story is really good yet that is all it has going for it. Ys Vii Lacrimosa of Dana has everything I like from Zelda games adventure, story, scenery, music, simple to play difficult to master combat, puzzles, and so forth. Although it is also unique, first time I played a game that is team based that is not turn based. Why is it better than Mario Odyssey you ask? Mario is missing an element I cannot put my finger on, I loved Mario 64 as a boy then tried Mario Sunshine and was disappointed. Should I try Mario Galaxy? I thought Mario Odyssey was going to be good like Mario 64 but it felt like Sunshine and was disappointed again. However for platformers Spyro The Dragon is my most favorite game.

      Absolutely, so Ys 8 uses the party system gameplay, so I would advise another party system game. The options are Ys SEVEN which began the system not as polished but still solid available on PC and PSP. Then Memories of Celceta the game before Ys 8 which is closer to 8 in terms of polish in gameplay available on PC, PS4, and Vita. Finally there's the most recent game Ys IX Monstrum Nox which is likely the closest to Ys 8 in terms of gameplay and story depth. Monstrum Nox is only available on PS4 right now but it's coming to Switch and PC in July.

    Man, I only played the re-done III on PC for a bit - one boss at some point was just a brick wall for me and I couldn't get past it, but up to that point it was really enjoyable - a far cry from what I've seen in reviews of the games on older consoles where you just bump into things at an angle. I wasn't ready for that kind of difficulty, might have to give it another try.

    Good game but I'm not a huge fan of Ys Party games, and the rock-paper-scissors mechanic work against the idea of a party with special strengths in the first place, why does it matter if Hummel can use a gun when it can only be used on a certain type of enemy? Sahad is really strong but to offset this he's slow an-oh wait, he's designed for armoured enemies...so why is he so slow? And yet again we're still able to ignore almost every enemy's offense with the ludicrously overpowered Flash Guard and Flash Dodge, effectively making every boss fight the same. Compared to Origin where you have to actually fight bosses and each chracter's inherent gameplay strength affects how you approach combat on every single enemy for their respective playthroughs (and not spam skills because normal attacks are weak). Not to mention how floaty the combat feels even in comparison to Celceta, overall it's still fun but man, don't know if I'll be replaying any time soon. (especially since it was super long and Dana's sections dragged for me)
    I'd say they should remove parties and flash and all that but we already know they didn't, so I guess this is the new Ys template now. But everyone absolutely loves this game, so overall I guess it's for the best, I'll just stick to older games while everyone has fun.

    • @CommRio
      @CommRio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do hope that at some point they take a look at all the good the Napishtim system games like Origin had and try and incorporate those aspects into modern Ys games. I agree with your points and understand them for now they're enjoyable, but the time may come where parties and flash moves/guards need to be adjusted or left behind.

      Hey if it's that big a sticking point you don't have to play it. The game is originally a Vita game so that's likely why it feels outdated even by Falcom standards (who are a small studio and are never close to cutting-edge graphics). It is a fun game though so if you can look past the graphics then you may be in for a good time.

    I've tried it few hours but didn't like it. I think it could be better on Vita, but on PS4 it's so ugly and what push you to discover an island ? Good landscape probably. When a character say "wow it's so beautiful" and you just see some pixels.. I know it was the same for trails but it was (already ridiculous) more plot oriented.
    The artistic direction is awful too.
    And I really dislike the first characters appearing like the blonde girl who act like a your random tsundere. I think it's difficult for me now to accept cliche that big.
    I do want to know the feeling that lot of people had on this game, but it doesn't cling with me.
