How they thought they could sell this for $1000 puzzles me. The level of fabric quality, seat cushion, back mesh and headrest are all commonly found on chairs < $500

Appreciate the honest review, HM really dropped the ball with this one. It's basically a $400-500 chair with a 12 year warranty. Although I'm not sure what exactly would break under warranty that would make it worth the extra cash. Say you need a replacement headrest, what does that cost? $5-10? The lumbar support looks like it would cost about the same as well.
Personally I'm a huge fan of my Steelcase Gesture, I paid $1100 new a couple years ago and it has the same 12 year warranty. It exceeded my expectations for the price

I think HM really blew it with this one... To the point where it changes my perception of the company. I hope they recall these and try to recoup what is left of their luxury and build quality reputation. This chair makes their other chairs seem cheap

That's really ridiculous and NOT at all how reality works. Most who use HM chairs probably won't even know it exists, and nothing else you said makes sense, just because the A-Class Mercedes exists doesn't make the S-Class seem cheap.

    • @BD-ox3yq
      @BD-ox3yq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@zicafoos8260 it's true that most companies are trying to gain a share of the gaming chair market. I think the way that HM went about it in this particular case with the vantum was the wrong move. With all the cost cutting. I feel that they should have cut less corners and come out with a slightly more expensive chair that aligns with the quality of the rest of their line up.

    • @BD-ox3yq
      @BD-ox3yq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@cenciende9401 I'm sorry you feel that way. In my opinion, it does dent the reputation of the company. Seeing how many corners were cut to save costs on this chair makes me wonder if future iterations of say, the aeron or embody, will have similar corners cut.

@@BD-ox3yq I agree. When I think of HM, I think of expensive but high quality chairs with unique designs.

Personally, in the $1000 price range, this chair seems like a total rip off. Seems like HM is just slapping their name on something that they did very little R&D on to take advantage of the gaming community. Going to stick with a quality office chair like the Amia (which is also $300 less). Thanks for the great review!

It's interesting because I went into a Herman Miller store and tried out all of the chairs. I thought the Vantum was extremely comfortable to sit on even more comfortable than the embody actually lol. U make a good point though about the cheap construction. But I think you should have a blind test on this. The Herman Miller Sail did not feel that good to me lol. I am 5ft 8 and 140lb so I guess for skinny average-height guys like me this chair works pretty well.
Here are some of my thoughts on the chairs for just testing them out for a short time in the store.
    My thoughts on the Vantum:
    - I love back to support its a lot more simple than the embody
    - I actually like the mesh on the Vantum and not as stiff as the mesh on the Aeron
    - I like the extra cushion for the butt support (for the skinny guys like me that don't have cushion)
    - The headrest feels great to lean back on
    My thoughts on the Embody:
    - I like the back support, but I didn't feel was $2000 dollar great.
    - Love the soft fabric
    - The butt cushion is too thin.
    My thoughts on the Aeron:
    - Love the armrest
    - a great chair for the office but doesn't feel like a comfy home chair where u can just chill back on.
    - I sit on this chair every day in the office so rather get something different
I'm just your average Joe consumer. I think if you guys really want to make a decision on a chair just go to your local Herman Miller store and test them out for yourself. Out of all the chairs I tested the Vantum felt the best, also It looks pretty sexy in my opinion, and it's half the cost of the Embody. Everyone is different and I only tested these chairs for a short time, but I gonna pick this one up. Hope this comment helps someone! Cheers!

Hey by no means was this meant to discourage people from the Vantum. I wanted to be ahnest and give people as much insight as possible. You fit in the "under 5'10" mark and I also noted that the backrest felt good and seat felt supportive, but when you press on a Sayl seat, you'll notice how much better the cushion feels compared to the Vantum's. But things like that don't matter that much when you actually sit on it!

I've gone over many tuber channels on chair reviews, and yours is the best. The level of detail and depth that you dive into is top-tier.

Have you tried the gaming version? They are very similar but not 100% the same. My first high end chair was the Embody, after 8 days I got shoulder pain so I decided to return it because I had a 14 day return window. My next chair was the Steelcase Gesture, the backrest was very different, it wasn't bad but I liked the Embody system more (I feeled the support more). The seat was good for a few hours but after 3-6 hours my butt hurt. So I decided to give the Embody Gaming a try, luckily there was a sale on their website. So after almost 1 year I am happily sitting on it without any shoulder pain or any other pain. At some point I miss the more adjustable arm pads from the Geste and after a long day in the home office the headrest was also good for having to watch a series in the evening. I also tried the Aeron from a dealer, the B size fit almost perfectly but my thighs are a bit too big so they touch the frame on side. Size C was overall too big for me.

I'm VERY surprised by all the cost cutting and overall quality/result of this chair, it is not what I would expect from HM. When I first saw it announced I thought maybe it could be my next chair in a few years when/if I'm ready to replace my Secret Lab Evo, but with what I'm seeing no way. I mean look at something like my previous chair the Ergohuman, it costs less for full metal construction, a ton of adjustments, lockable tilt of course, fantastic full mesh which I never had an issue with in 8 years etc. Also side note, the first thing I do with any chair is replace the castors with far superior rollerblade style wheels, screw castors!

i started looking in the chair market for an upgrade right when the vantum came out. i knew nothing, but was super hyped for it since it was like the cheapest HM and it was right in my budget. tried it in an authorized dealer and was very dissapointed. but im glad that this chair sent me into a rabbit hole of research and testing because i now ended up with an embody despite it being way more. and i love it

    • @chodeyboi4754

I've had an Embody for 1.5yrs now and would never switch up on this chair. I greatly considered the Vantum when I first saw HM was making a gaming chair but when I looked at it on the site, it instantly looked way too cheaply made compared to their other chairs. The only thing that would improve the Embody for me (in very specific cases like waiting for a match to load or watching a long-ish video) would be a headrest and that's the main thing that made me look at the Vantum anyways lol. Congrats on getting the Embody tho!

@kyuro I luckily haven't had that issue so far but I also appreciate the 12 year warranty they have just in case mine does fuck up at some point lol. I researched chairs for ~6 months and talked to alot of people on youtube/IG and what sold me were the users who owned their HM chairs for over a decade and still use them daily. Plus Design Within Reach is 20 mins away from me and I got to sit in them before buying. That was a big reason I didn't order any other brands too.

i'm with you on your thoughts about chairs (especially this one) not having tilt lock being a missed opportunity. i think what a lot of companies miss out on is that there's people who both work and game/relax with the same setup and chair! what's needed is the comfort but also the quick features that makes it easier to switch in between work mode and relax mode ie a way to tilt lock to just recline and chill. right now between the office chair companies and gaming chair companies there hasn't been one out that does a good balance of both

I can say that if I was in the market today I would certainly be considering the Vantum among others. I had a very interesting back and forth with the official Steelcase Twitter account via DM.
When I asked them why they mocked the Vantum and yet don't have gaming chairs of their own, they told me that their current chairs are great for gaming.
That's simply not true, because none of the top Steelcase chairs support forward tilt and therefore they would leave the back completely unsupported, when the PC gamer is leaning forward.
I don't have trouble using the Aeron or Mirra 2 for work/gaming.

I wanted to like the chair. With more leisure time being spent at a desk I think there needs to be an option for less work oriented ergonomics. But the vantum misses the mark, it looks like it was built to a very specific cost to be in "best gaming chair" listicles. Maybe HM can take another crack with a "Vantum 2" like they did with the mirra and aeron.

I went store yesterday(am short fem 5’5) and tried all chairs, this is by far the best for me, downside is the material but can’t blame the comfort. Was originally looking cosm high sadly not a good fit. I agree it may feel a bit small for tall ppl.

to remove the headrest stem thing, there is a hole in the back of the chair body where you can put in a small screwdriver to push the tab so you could pull out the headrest.( you have to push in the screwdriver and pull at the same time)

Ha! Got a midroll ad for this chair.
Definitely does not look like enough chair for the money. Years ago, I was deciding between the Herman Miller Embody chair and the Steelcase Gesture, and ended up buying the Gesture. The Embody chair was nice and all, but had that lower back pinching that some of us seemed to encounter. Compared to this Vantum chair? Spend a little more for a Gesture, which has WAY more features, adjustability, and customizability.

I don’t really understand this chair. If it were half the price I would. But for this money, any ‘gamer’ is probably looking to invest in a high-end office chair to replace their old gaming chair, as several notable streamers have done.
Gaming chairs are meant to be much more affordable while also being less ergonomic as a compromise, with some fun features like a super deep tilt (which I still miss to this day from my old DX Racer) along with cool colors/branding. This thing just seems to be in this weird limbo where you’re getting something that doesn’t seem like a great high-end chair and also lacks the expected fun and affordability of a gaming chair.
Maybe they expected people to pay top dollar for “the premium gaming chair” without realizing that many gamers with 4 digit budgets would just go for something in their office chair lineup anyway. But who knows, just my guess.
I do love HM though, my Aeron is the best chair I’ve ever sat in. Maybe they will make future improvements to the Vantum.
    Thanks for the vid!

"Maybe I'm crazy" is right! Tilt limiter requires no "fidgeting" with the adjustment controls, even less than fixed tilt lock. You only have to set the right tilt tension ONCE - just gentle enough to allow effortless recline, while simultaneously providing a little support for sitting back upright WITHOUT TOUCHING CONTROLS! This is superior to needing to unlock and relock the tilt every time you want to sit up to quickly type/click/grab something. If you need to spend some time in "business mode," you can lock the tilt upright anyway.

Thanks for the review. Disappointed to see the shortcomings, since HM's description of this chair sounded like what I was looking for.
Which high end chairs would you say fit a similar description? I liked how the Aeron and Vantum both offered forward leaning support, but I didn't like how the Aeron seat is punishing when I try to relax on the chair. I thought the Sayl's backrest was too short (I'm 5'11) and no 3rd party headrests. The Embody seemed to only want you to lean back, but I might just bite the bullet on that anyway.
I've also looked at Steelcase's lineup, but they don't have an AD where I live, so I won't get as good a deal as HM's stuff. And I hear the headrests are terrible.

I'm sending it back sadly, I saw it knocked for it's design but I actually quite liked the simple, light look of it, really didn't want anything crazy, and I didn't find the butt gap to be an issue (as someone who is 6 foot) but man, that cushion is just a dealbreaker.

Actually the "lock position and the lean back" is useless at a desk. (The point of a chair is to stand righ - not lean in it)
It's a miss conception for most people the only part that is really necessary is the lombard.
it's just something that our society never been taught.
Naturally you body will lean to a certain degree so you don't feel pain (the why you don't lock the chair) and the second is really simple...security.
Even for less than 5.10 i feel the gap in my tail bones, it's better to not compress the tailbone so you body will naturally form the "S" for a better natural position of the spine. (and not having spine compression)
What you actually desire is your ass going "back" a little bit and feel the lombard touching the back seat. (and yes, you'll feel the air/cold touching your ass)

I bought my titan for $400 back in 2018 now prices reach like $600 for new ones, but want to move onto something that will actually feel like an upgrade rather than just be like meh. I could ultimately go for an embody but that is also almost 2x the money, just not sure if thats worth that much more than say a gesture or amia type of chair.

I think you’ll really appreciate any of the 3 chairs, but in terms of build quality, I think you’ll be happier with a gesture or Amia. Hell, order both the gesture and Amia and again, return the 2 you don’t like! Don’t forget to use my links!

@@Ahnestly After watching your vids, I learned about CrandallOffice, I just purchased a Remanufactured Amia, little customization, but now I just saw your Leap v2 one and it made me want to get that since the cushion is much better. I'm sure both will be nice but now I'm wondering their remanu'd Amia Vs Ramanu'd Leap v2

Mine is supposed to be here tomorrow. I'm seriously considering sending it back already. The more and more I watch videos, from what I can see at least... it doesn't look like much better build quality than the $200 staples hyken I already have, for 5 times the price. My brother has the aeron, and that chair definitely feels premium and quality built. This chair isn't THAT much cheaper, especially considering what a used aeron can be had for. I don't think it's going to meet my expectations for a $1000 chair. I'm also 6'3" so I'm concerned in that regard too. I also have a secret lab titan batman special edition, and while I was always happy with the quality on that chair, it just wasn't comfortable to me. If I spent more than an hour straight in that chair, my lower back would be hurting for days.

Hey! So don’t let the reviews get to ya. Try it objectively and if it doesn’t work, then it doesn’t work! And you can return for free! A heads up - Herman miller is doing a 15% off sale started November 3, so you could get an embody then? Hahaha if you decide to pick up, please consider using my links! Really helps this channel!!!

@@Ahnestly Oh for sure I'm going to assemble it and give it a good shot. I am definitely letting the reviews get to me, but it does seem that the general sentiment towards the vantum is rather negative. If it was half the price it probably would be a very different story. My biggest issue with the embody has always been the lack of a headrest... But since I literally just watched one of your other videos and see that one is supposedly coming realatively soon, AND looks to match the chair perfectly... I just may do that. 15% off would certainly help push me over the edge. Unless I can find a good used example nearby! I also am now feeling some sort of obligation towards the Haworth fern, since they share my name. Thanks for the videos man!
