For those wondering, this still is viable, including Odyssey . I did as suggested and filtered for Famine states in the galaxy map, scanned the systems nav beacon. The first system I went to did not have any distro centers but the second one did, it popped up in my navigation list after scanning and coming out of the nav beacon. It was 5,000 LS away. After dropping in ships started spawning in and high waking out as shown. I got about 15 Datamined Wake Exceptions after about 15-20 minutes of scanning the wakes. Seems to work fine still!
its seriously a shame how much effort you put into your videos but so little people watch these :( keep up the good work man you have helped me so much with my elite dangerous journey. Thank you
I do a lot of BGS work for my squadron, and I always have a wake scanner on board. A-Rated, Grade 5 Fast Scan. I scan wakes when I arrive and leave stations, NAV Beacons, Res Sites, etc. Like scanning as many ships as I can while in supercruise on the way to a location. Maybe I get something, or maybe I don't. But over time, it adds up. Just ways to reduce the grind, or at least reduce the perception of the grind. Just make sure you deselect the scanned wake before jumping, or you will wind up going to the wake's destination!
Did a build around a Cobra MkIII. I'd forgotten what a fun and versatile little ship this is - takes me back - I held on to one of these for the longest time when I started my Elite career. Zooming around the instance scanning wakes is also helping me manage / learn the switch to HOTAS. And that 2 second fast scan - sweeeet!

I can’t even work the wake scanner. Do I need to deploy hard points to activate wake scanner? Can I deploy hardpoints even if I don’t have weapons installed to activate wake scanner or do I need to buy weapons to get it to activate?
I have a feeling this got nerfed. I found three Famine systems, only one spawned a distribution center. Once there, I've been getting grade 1-2 encoded mats only. I haven't seen a single Datamined Wake Exception. I did this a few weeks ago and was getting them hand over fist.
Flying is definately more fun than driving the same route over and over again I used the method in the (far) past so thanks for the heads up that it's doable again
Since the additional system states were added into ED in January, the new states like Blight also contain distribution centres! I haven't checked infrastructure failure systems yet though but these too may contain them. Personally, I prefer to use a long range scanner and sit in one spot to scan the high wakes. You can comfortably scan the 4 wakes in the time it takes for the next 4 ships to jump into the system, and also scan the 4 ships before they jump out too, for other encoded mats. Having a fast scanner isn't needed nor can you speed up the spawn rate of the 4 distro ships... So a fast scanner doesn't benefit you any, you just fly around a lot! Lastly, check on EDDB for a famine or blight state in an Anarchy system. If so shoot the three T9s for mats as well and relog.
28 March 2021. HIP88553 about 150LY from Sol. Famine system with multiple distribution centres. Only 3x3 datamined wake exceptions in half an hour though. You may get the same effect just sitting outside a station waiting for ships to warp out.
When I tried this I could not find famine systems and tried the Sirius Astrometric tourist beacon instead. Lots of passenger ships coming and going. I collected plenty of low grade wake exception data, but never Data Mined Wake Exceptions. I have given up on this approach and sold off my wake scanner. I got what I needed trading 6 for 1 of Encoded Data materials collected from Jameson's crashed Cobra instead - trading at Ray Gateway in Diaguandri. Yes, the relog "trick", but its the only way to get what I need in a realistic time frame. I'd give up on the exploration side of the game otherwise.
Gawd damn I miss the old galaxy map - everything was just neatly organised and made sense. At least it's not as bad as what they've done to the fitting UI
You are right it is nice to use another method. But in fact if you usually carry a frame shift wake scanner (better G5 enginnered) and scan the wakes in all stations with heavy traffic, probably you will get the same amount or even more. Important is to distribute the wake data periodically in a data trader in a way that you are not full in any grade, so you can always pick up data. (sign comd Boni58)

Trying this in mid-2021, and I get no stations at all when I search using the in-game map. EDDB ("systems") reports accurate famine status, however, Inara ("nearest") data has not been accurate (either that or the in-game map status is, itself, out of date).

this stupid shit is gonna make me uninstall the game, it is literally anti-fun. two hours scanning wakes at a distribution center...not even one single datamined wake exception....
Apparently FDEV did again what they do best: nerfing stuff that works and replacing it with stuff that is much more boring and makes this game a pain in the a... While this still worked a few months ago, it does not seem to any more. I scanned wakes at a distribution center for 40 minutes now, result: 1 wake with DWEs.
This just straight up doesn't work. I flew to three famine systems and not a single one had a single distribution center...so there is something else that makes this work that isn't included in these steps...it was a fantastic way to waste an hour though I guess...
This is really scrapping the bottom of the barrel that is Elite Dangerous. Yes it's much better than quitting the game and re-loading. Sure alternatives are good, but damn FDEV make it more interesting!

@@DowntoEarthAstronomy thanks kindly sir, its only 5k from sol roughly but I shall message you on discord and send you some screens and the whole story ASAP ☺
There gonna nerf this too... you made a video about it... lol
I did all this shit, i've visited all systems that eddb show me and found zero distribution centers. Also i visited many systems with war, civil war, civil unrest, blight and others for 2 hours and found very nice, huge and lovely nothing. I'm upset. What i have to do now?
i dont know what im doing wrong, i found a famine system, i found a distribution center....ive been scanning wakes for an hour, scanned at least 100 or more wakes, not one single datamined wake exceptions.....
atypical distributed wake echoes are 90% of the scans
this stupid shit is gonna make me uninstall the game, it is literally anti-fun. two hours scanning wakes at a distribution center...not even one single datamined wake exception....
LOL we travel to a system that has starving citizens. Then sit around watching them get food, and scan their exhaust when they leave. this is silly.
Noice
The problem is finding the famine system. Since it’s impossibly rare... it does make it impossible to use that method.
the real problem is:how to find a famine system
Video starts at 1:50
"fun"
yea... about that...
Fun? Easy? Two words FDev know NOTHING about.
elite dangerous repetitive mind numbing simplistic unengaging game mechanics as usual
Fun? Name one thing in ED that is fun atm... No? Alright then.
