    This trick also seems to help with getting those light jigs down in the water column in addition to helping you know what depth you're getting bit at. I'm not sure why but if you just try to drop the jig straight down to the bottom, most of the time it'll get carried away in the current. Whereas if you use this method, you can usually work that jig down to the fish.

    Thanks for the nice tutorial. Today was my 3rd try to catch sheepshead at the CBBT and I didn't do well lol. I had to use 1/4 of a blue crab because there was no fiddler crab available. How can you set the hook on this fish? I was so frustrated... I used blue crabs also on my second trip and caught 3. Still a lot to learn...
    Thanks for your channel! Hope see you out there one day!

    • @biffagump8B
      @biffagump8B 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key with sheepshead is to NOT try to set the hook. Once you get a bite just start a slow and steady retrieve and they will hook themselves. Hard to do at first but you will catch a lot of sheepshead.

    • @SouthernReelsFishing

    If you don’t have side imaging to scan the pilings is there something else you look for? Whether it’s the outer pilings or the center on tend to hold more fish. Really appreciate all the videos fairly new to kayaking an I fish out of kiptopeke mainly the ships but been eyeing the high rise as it’s close to where I launch but still learning the coefficients an tides

    • @SouthernReelsFishing
      @SouthernReelsFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Traditional sonar works just fine. You can just drive past the piling close and the bigger sheeps show up just fine. I used to do it with my old hook 4 unit on my first outback

      A lot of the times they will sit in there holes about 1 to 6 inches down. This can depend on the tide. If you take a stick or trowel and push into the ground next to the hole they will rush out to the top of the hole. I think they think it's caving in or filling with water. I use a long slender trowel. When you insert it into the ground and they emerge you can grab them. A lot of the time once I see them pop up I will push the trowel towards the hole and block them from going back in. I normally can get about 2 dozen in 10 min doing this. It takes a little trail and error but in the right location it's super easy

      Most tackle shops in the area sell them, yet you can catch them for free in the tidal rivers locally. Just need a set of waders, 5 gallon bucket, and no fear of running around in 4 ft marsh grass and mud at low tide

    • @rorydimov405
      @rorydimov405 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Floyd, when he mentioned that being a citation he is saying it is big enough to qualify for an award from the state for being a large specimen of the species. Most states have a similar program to recognize anglers who catch big fish. You can receive a citation for most different types of fish. In order to receive one, you just need to research the requirements and follow them such as taking the fish to a certified scale and submitting an application for the citation.
