Eric please tell me you caught that BROKEN KNUCKLE BALL JOINT MOUNT???........No way that car is safe to drive!!!!!!!!........Please tell me you noticed it after the filming!!
@South Main Auto Repair LLC I know you didn't need to use it in this repair, but you mentioned an air hammer adapter for ball joints in the knuckle. This is how my Tacoma is set up. Changing ball joints out of the knuckle is a major pain with a standard press. You wouldn't happen to have a name or a link for that adapter, would ya?
It's a packed episode! You get Mr. O. turning a wrench the wrong way, Mrs. O. in the shop, innuendos about putting it in, taking it out, and making sure it goes in straight ("that's what she said!"), comparing NAPA to Dorman (Dorman: "Hold my beer, I'm gonna make the part even cheaper and worse), AND changing a ball joint on a Hondoo Odyssey! Now I don't feel so bad turning a wrench the wrong way when I'm 45 degrees to the wrong side of reality and upside down, trying to do something I probably shouldn't even try doing. BUT WAIT! You also get Mr. O. speaking fake Japanese, and asking NAPA NOT to become a sponsor! All this on a Saturday? Amazing! :)
I was about to replace the whole lower control arm, and thought there must be a better way. Then I saw this SMA upload and knew it would have exactly what I wanted to see. Off the replace several ball joints. As well as tie rod ends and front axels, sway bars. Every boot is ripped on the odyssey I’m working on.
Eric O / South Main Auto videos really paid off for me this week. First up, I replaced a brake line that had rusted out on my Focus. First time working with NiCopp (yup, it is absolutely amazing to work with. I have NEVER made a brake line that actually looked exactly like the original before! so thanks for tip number 1 there) and I was using a cheap bubble flaring tool because it was all I could get on short notice, and my old school 45 degree double flare kit just won't work on the Ford. My first attempt at making the line, one of my flares leaked. Of course, we didn't find this out until I had installed it, and put fluid back in the master. I quick had my son hold the brake pedal down, while I removed the leaking line, made up a new one, and installed it. Thanks for tip number 2, so nice to NOT have the entire reservoir of new fluid just pour out all over my car while I was making the new line up. Second try worked like a charm. Tip number 3, I gravity bled the front brake after employing tip number 4, when the bleeder won't crack open easily, try tightening it a touch first, then loosening it up. I almost couldn't believe that the 14 year old NY bleeder screw cracked loose without breaking . . . same can be said for the flare nuts on the brake line. If that wasn't enough, the son in law comes to me today with a check engine light on. Codes are for lean condition in both banks. We hook up the code reader, head into live data, see the O2 readings quite low, and I can feel that the engine isn't terribly happy at idle, so I says to him increase the RPM's for me up to around 3k to 4k. As he revs it up, I see the O2 readings steadily climbing, from near 0 (.012 on one side, and .02 on the other) up to 0.8. Ok, we're done here. You have a vacuum leak, go find it. Turns out, there were two. The clamp that is supposed to hold the intake tube onto the throttle body was just kind of dangling around doing not much of anything, and a rubber elbow was split half way around (of course, the BOTTOM half where you can't see it). From problem, to diagnoses, to problem solved in a matter of minutes. I absolutely would not have even known where to start with that diagnosis if not for your videos. Thanks to you, instead of bumbling about with it for who knows how long, I quickly, and confidently went straight to the problem, verification, and solution. This is why I watch South Main Auto! Oh, yeah, and one other thing, I managed to strip the forcing screw and nut on my Harbor Freight wheel bearing press kit, and thanks to you, knew already that I could buy the OTC version off the web, and have a pretty decent setup for not a whole lot of money. So, I don't know, I've lost count as to how many of your tips helped me out this week, but I think you should probably just go ahead and send me a bill for your services lol.
I do not have an O'Reilly's auto parts near me here in P.G County Maryland, But I am a vary good Technician on cars and trucks. I bought my self a nice ball joint tool. used it two times. better to have it and not need it, then to need it and not have it. Finn Balor True enough. But there are also many where the entire control arm must be replaced or have other issues that make the job more difficult. I’m actually not a huge Honda fan boy but they do seem to try a bit harder to make their vehicles easier to work on than most.
@@sharedknowledge6640 what I've always found is Honda's really good at taking an existing idea whether it be their own or from another manufacturer and really polishing it and perfecting it I'll give you an example variable valve timing was introduced by Fiat in the 1960s and didn't really go into Vehicles till the 1980s then there was Honda that came out of left field and learned how to perfect it now every car has VVT
Finn Balor Honda engineering is hard to beat. There’s a TH-cam video of a guy changing a head gasket on a 500+ HP turbo Integra in a parking lot at an event in under an hour. Try that on most cars. When you can get 400+ HP reliably out of a Honda 4 banger with a stock lower end that says a lot. Toyota had the old Supra 2JZ inline 6 that was similarly over engineered but they’ve not done nearly as well with most of their other engines.
I was born and raised south of Ithaca, NY. I have not lived there since the late 80s. Every time I watch your videos, it brings back fond memories. Keep up the superb videos and don't work yourself into a frazzle!
4:49 funny this comes up, i just did the rare ball joint job at the honda dealership on a 07 element yesterday(you cant get just the ball joint, to get a "honda" ball joint you need to get the knuckle) and thats what the parts guys at the dealer gave me to put in it(saves the customer labor and an extra $300), thanks for the share!
I would highly recommend taking the pickle fork at 1:25 to the grinding wheel to remove the mushrooming on the striking head as I had a coworker have a piece of that break off and end up in his wrist. Thankfully he was ok but we had to mop up the blood off the shop floor after he was rushed to the hospital.
You mentioned the Mevotech ttx, then went to an ad....I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see what you would say - as you were trashing NAPA chassis parts. I just installed all new f150 ball joints with mevotech ttx....Had me worried for a while. Also, love your videos...I'm not sure, but you might be the only channel I don't automatically go forward 25 seconds...Just perfect... Thanks!!!
“Josh, hold this and help me get in the hole.” My wife just shook her head and said, “You must be watching Eric O.”. Yep. As I nearly spewed my Dr. Pepper all over the screen. Great video!! I know it sounds silly, but I love watching your expertise. Cheers from Texas!!
Just have to say at 1:59 most auto parts stores DON'T have that specific ball joint adapter even with the add-on rental "honda 4wd adapters" etc. I got stuck on that specific ball joint until I got a master set with one in it.
Great video. Got into my project to find out that my ball joint is built into my control arm. It can't press out. LOL! Just ordered new arms. Keep up the good vids
I was just talking to my NAPA rep about the chassis parts. He said they had a change in we’ll call it upper management. And they were just buying the cheapest thing they could find and stuffing it in their box. He said they have since changed back to having them made by a consistent supplier. I just bought a NAPA chassis ball joint and it looked and felt like the old ones they sold.
For some reason, I've done a lot of ball joints and tie rod ends (especially inners) in my little shop this summer. I bought my Astro ball joint press kit from Summit Racing Equipment. A bit pricey but well worth the cost when you need it.
I use the maddox ball joint press from harbor freight. All the time I get "bro, my snap on is way better" but whatever! I did order the astro wheel bearing press kit (knockoff otc hub grappler) and I really like it. Astro makes good stuff!

Did my Honda CRV last week using the same tool , tight as $#!? ....Small cracking sound and they came out, did all the lower arm bushings and a new clutch. Practically a new car fit for another 200,000 miles 😊😊😊😊
Hi Eric, I got this ball joint removal tool you used today. Paid 50 dollars for it. But, it costs 180 dollars in freight fees due to its weight. I didn't see that coming kkk. Have a good weekend!
You didn't look stupid, we all know sometimes you have to tighten a nut a smidge to break it loose. 😉 Seriously, I would have used Nap'r chassis since I thought they were still good. I don't work on cars daily so I appreciate the opinion and expertise of someone who does. Now I know...
Glad you know the difference between a split pin and a cotter pin. I like to leave the head of the split pin sticking up and out. Makes it easier for the next guy. Its only there to ensure that the nut can't spin off.
A new phone! You had the same phone my parents had when I lived with them. Even after all these years, I still pause the video thinking I’m getting a phone call 🤦🏻♂️
Great service job as usual, the specifics about the 555 suspension parts are particularly helpful. We haven't seen this brand in our area just yet (the lower region of NY) but are going to ask around for them next time we need front end components.
Very true about napa chasis ball joints did a 4runner a few weeks ago customer brought two entirely diferent ball joint and the boxes were identical 🤷🏽♂️ Only problem with the astro ball joint press was the fact the toyota cupa are not included had to imrpovise.
I did this job on my 04 a while back. Pro tip, if you're replacing the whole control arm (easier for the regular home mechanic) and you cannot get the ball joint off the knuckle, take a spindle socket to get the driveshaft out of the way, rest the knuckle on a jack, and give that darn ball joint your all with your favorite hammer. Eventually it'll come out. I had to do this because the ball joint came out of its socket on the control arm and was *very* stuck to the knuckle.
If you are going to rent the tools from the auto parts stores. Take them out and inspect them before you leave the store. I have found several C frames that were bent from abuse. Making it very hard to remove a ball joint.
"Didn't even rip the boot." The one time in the history of suspension repair a pickle fork didn't demolish a dust boot. You should buy a dang lottery ticket Eric. 😎
@Jamie M Not with the pickle fork in my experience. If I'm not replacing the ball joint I either use a puller or the "shock the knuckle" method. Since Eric was replacing the ball joint, he used the pickle fork and of course the boot didn't split. Par for the course I'd say.
@@gearheadautomotivel.l.c.5476 yep, you have a better chance of winning the mega lottery when it's at the highest in years with everyone, their brohers, sisters, cousins and dead relatives buying tickets. vs. not tearing the rubber with a pickle fork LOL
@@gearheadautomotivel.l.c.5476 the last "universal" boot I tried on a tie rod end, lasted exactly one week before it split in half, the boot was too tall and made of bad rubber. to be fair, that van is hard on the outer tie rod boots anyway. the GM engineers that modified them from the 80's to 90's models need some cane beatings lol
In the old days, I've changed many a ball joint by beating the heck out of the stud to remove it, then put a jack stand under the new joint and let the car down with the jack to have the car's weight press it in! This is why I don't miss the old days!
I have the same ball joint setup on my 2010 Mazda CX-9 with the exception that the stud is held into the knuckle with a pinch bolt rather than a nut on the top. It seems like a very reasonable design and replacing ball joints is a pretty straightforward job. I can’t imagine having a Subaru with those horrendous ball joints.
Noticed the same thing. I have an old forester that I have a new spindle ordered because the same part cracked when trying to drill out a stuck bolt (there is a bolt to clamp the ball joint in place, even though it's damn near impossible to get in/out regardless of any bolt)
At 2:46 the knuckle's pocket looks cracked, but it's actually just a casting edge shadowed by the camera's floodlight. At 9:08 it's a bit more clearly defined. It's all good.
That’s why I buy my parts from Honda. More expensive but less headaches. My son bought an aftermarket exhaust and cat for his 04 pilot and had nothing but issues. I had warned him but he didn’t listen.
I just had to replace both frony lower ball joints on my 8th gen accord! It was clunking and groaning in hot weather. Did a lot of research and ended up with ac delco boxed sankei 555 joints!! Available at napa Canada under altrom sbh072 or their napa pro Blue boxed house brand, make sure its made in Japan!
It’s interesting how different repairs are in the Rust Belt. I’m down South, and we almost never have salt on the roads. People here ignore their suspension until it breaks. I don’t, but I have a bad back. I notice every vibration.
Three 5 makes an incredible product!!!! I have recently purchased inner tie rod ends by three 5 for my tacoma and they are very beefy and high quality product. Napa chassis parts are junk now.

@Jamie M You got it chief.
@@gearheadautomotivel.l.c.5476 yep, you have a better chance of winning the mega lottery when it's at the highest in years with everyone, their brohers, sisters, cousins and dead relatives buying tickets. vs. not tearing the rubber with a pickle fork LOL
@@throttlebottle5906 Exactly. Nobody sells the boots anymore either so you're buying a new component just to address the torn boot.
I saw those safety squints!
Corntact!
I wish he'd wear his safety glasses; he had one scare already. Please Mr. O., Put on your safety glasses. It's for the children.
@@markh.6687 that one scare was while he was test driving. Not while turning wrenches.
Ave would be proud!
Thanks for changing out your phones, I have the same ones as your old one, and every time yours rang, I always looked around for my home phone.
"...Go on a balljoint frenzy" lol!! classic SMA. I love it!
In the old days, I've changed many a ball joint by beating the heck out of the stud to remove it, then put a jack stand under the new joint and let the car down with the jack to have the car's weight press it in! This is why I don't miss the old days!
The old control arm guillotine!! Definitely a finger snapper. I got 13 stitches from a slip.
wow, that's a nice looking ring on your finger. really nice design. my girl friend is hoping I give her a ring just like that. LOL
Great job and video like always
Thank you for showing me this! helps alot 👍
Love the channel. Always great to see Mrs. O. She keeps you in line.
BTW- “555” in Japanese is pronounced “Go-Go-Go”. Not a joke.
Brian Unangst Hory Sheet!
Brian Unangst, sounds like a bathroom joke. Go Go Go.
In Thailand it is "Ha-Ha-Ha". Consequently, many text messages and social media comments are full of 5’s ;-)
Always nice to be guided in.
At 5:30 it looks like the tab for the ball joint on the bottom of the spindle is cracked and bent out.
yee idk if thats normal casting or what
Noticed the same thing. I have an old forester that I have a new spindle ordered because the same part cracked when trying to drill out a stuck bolt (there is a bolt to clamp the ball joint in place, even though it's damn near impossible to get in/out regardless of any bolt)
I was wanna say the same thing , just scroll down to see if some one else notice that ...
At 2:46 the knuckle's pocket looks cracked, but it's actually just a casting edge shadowed by the camera's floodlight. At 9:08 it's a bit more clearly defined. It's all good.
@@miketeeveedub5779 It still looks like a crack to me.
That’s why I buy my parts from Honda. More expensive but less headaches. My son bought an aftermarket exhaust and cat for his 04 pilot and had nothing but issues. I had warned him but he didn’t listen.
I love the "wrench" videos. The computer diagnostic videos I find boring. But I could watch these mechanical videos all-day-long. Thanks Eric O.
You do an awesome job you are a exelecet mechanic keep up the good work
I love you speak the truth on parts,No matter .
You always make it look easy. Thanks for another great video.
I just loved that Mr O effed up his righty tighty lefty loosey
We need more videos, Hallmark holiday movies are right around the corner
471000 subscribers .. WOW ..seems like it was yesterday when I found you and became # 2600 ! ..awesome :)
On your intro I know what you are saying but my brain still hears "welcome back to the self made auto channel" lol
Even though I know that isn't what Eric is saying, that (what you said) is what I hear.
And many times the closed captioning says that as well. Today’s said south plain.
OMG! Me too! 😄
Ditto
Now I'm going to hear that, the power of suggestion claims another one.
🤤 another SMA video!
Another sweet repair video! Thanks for sharing Eric!
man i love brake suspension steering videos
I've just got done doing ball joints in my 93 Jeep Cherokee, fun stuff, I learned from you. Easy peasy
I did my 97 Grand. had to buy the angle adapter, it didn't come in my kit ?
It’s interesting how different repairs are in the Rust Belt. I’m down South, and we almost never have salt on the roads. People here ignore their suspension until it breaks. I don’t, but I have a bad back. I notice every vibration.
Nice to see another video. Love your work.learned a lot. Learned some new words too!
Watching from Rochester, NY.
I can’t wait until Napa sponsors you
Thanks for the vid. An easier one than some especially in crusty New York.
Great video. Love your humor. Thanks for sharing the video.
I miss the good ol' days when Mrs' O would hold your hang down hockey stick. But I guess if Jay does it for ya you do you. Cheers!
@Jamie M Jay was the guy that Dr O asked to pull his hang down with the hockey stick. In past videos he has had Mrs O do it.
@Jamie M did we ever figure out who the person helping was? Was it Josh or Jay?
You make look so easy Amigo!👍
Three 5 makes an incredible product!!!! I have recently purchased inner tie rod ends by three 5 for my tacoma and they are very beefy and high quality product. Napa chassis parts are junk now.
