- I used to commute in and out of from London Liverpool St for over a decade so this in this video I thought I would try the journey from the driver's perspective! I'm driving the Siemens-built Class 360 EMU, operated by Greater Anglia from Colchester Town and my first pick-up is to four more commuter cars at Colchester. I then have to take passengers from Colchester, stopping at a number of stations on the line including my home town of Chelmsford. The setting is winter and it's early morning. When we get to Stratford you can even see the Olympic Stadium used in the London 2012 games.

As someone who lives in Colchester this video is pretty interesting. The two stations actually look somewhat like their real world counterparts.
I remember this route (Studied at university of essex) so I traveled Liverpool-St To Colchester North Where I'd have to get off an I'd switch over to get the train to wivenhoe. I reckon your route will just miss going past the campus, which would fill me with both PTSD and warm nostalgia.
Anyway yeah don't worry about your driving as long as your anything less than 30 minutes late your still grossly superior to anything that happens on that line IRL :D

I get the train from Witham to Colchester everyday now and it's pretty amazing how accurate this is. Everything is almost spot on!

Just to be that uptight know-it-all. Correction: Stratford International is at a different location to Startford Station with no conneted walkways bewteen the two stations. Stratford International station, weirdly, is not an international station, as til today (since opening in Dec 2007), still, does not have any international services. Eurostar refuses to stop at the station (probably because Stratford is basically an upgraded ghetto, and slows down white-collared businessmen from the Square Mile to their conferences in Paris), along with the UK Border Agency refusal to put any extra staff at a new station/border point. GREAT VIDEO by the way, always been watching. Keep up! Love
Great vid, as a bit of a train sim veteran, you only need to reset your AWS on double yellow, yellow and red signals. The 'Bling!' means your doing great. I haven't played this route but I think you have to reset your brakes if you hit emergency brakes (100%). So try not to brake 100%. Hope this is helpful.

Squrriel, you have to keep resetting because you keep putting your brakes to the emergency setting. If you go to full running service (or as close as) but dont go 100%, which is emergency, you dont have to stop to reset your loco. Its bascally the same situation if you miss the AWS, it puts on the emergency brake and you have to come to a complete halt to start moving again. Hope this helps!
when the AWS makes the ping noise it means the signal is green and you don't need to cancel it. just for the warning horn which sounds for restrictive signals (yellows/Red) and/or speed restrictions etc. good fun to watch someone try and do what I do but learning on the spot. nice vid.
I went out with a girl from Kelvedon a few years back. Had to make that journey many a time. Glad to see the maps and scenery is very similar to how I remember it!

When you get the short ping for the AWS you don't need to reset the alarm, that is for the green light. You only need to reset the AWS buzzer (a loud sound) for the yellow and red lights.

It was the little thing you have to hit Q for that set your e-brake @ 34:00. You were out of the cab showing the sights and didn't hear it. Great video, as always! Gonna pick this game up Thursday!

This is so funny one of the best Train Simulator videos I've ever seen because I play it similar to you have no idea what I'm doing half the time but do it for the fun of driving trains.
You don't have to reset the AWS every time it goes bong - it only needs resetting whenever the actual alarm goes off. It goes bong whenever the line ahead is safe, and the alarm sounds whenever it is "unsafe", for example if there is a yellow/double yellow/red signal or sudden lowering of the speed limit on the line ahead. It's basically so that if the alarm is not reset by the driver within a certain time limit, the emergency brakes will be activated automatically by the AWS system in order to stop the train passing a signal at danger or speeding, both of which could cause a crash. The bong just tells the driver that the line ahead is safe and no resetting of the AWS is required.
That whistling noise that you reset was the Driver Vigilance Device (DVD), which is basically an extra fail-safe to the AWS fitted to certain trains. In a real-life Class 360, once the DVD whistle sounds, the driver needs to release and then re-apply the dead man's pedal... this is to prove that they are still alert and haven't tried to cheat the system by placing a weight on the pedal!

As a Witham resident I can say it does look like that, even down to the vending machines. :D You wouldn't think it from the size of the town, but that station is one of the 150 busiest stations in Britain. It's a nightmare in the mornings :P

As an avid player of Train Simulator I can tell you learn as you play. Just to give you a few good tips squirrel, The reason your train stopped suddenly halfway through the video is because there was an audible warning which you needed to cancel and you didn't. Also whenever the AWS goes "ding" you don't need to press Q as it's telling you the track is clear. Other advice I can give you is don't use emergency brakes when stopping at stations and use the distance from the platform to gauge when.
Congratualtions, you're only the millionth person to come up with that idea.

Well I don't agree. Learning whilst I play is something I have done with other games and a lot of people find it useful, plus I also get great tips from friendly subs.

I would advise that when you slow down before a station, try to let the loco slow down by its own weight rather than the breaks! I find it works if you enter the start of the platform at about 25-30 mph and then keep breaking between 34 and 60% until you stop where you need to!
Best advice to give about the brakes is to avoid Emergency unless you need it. Its not supposed to be used in normal operation and the way it locks things up reflects this.

You always need your lights on, Front - White and Rear - Red. Also Windscreen Wipers are also helpful !

P15-P18 is usually Class 321s, 360s and 315s. P15-P16 would be Colchester, Braintree, Whitham, Clacton-on-Sea. P17-P18 Shenfield branch

You live in Chelmsford, that's cool, I live at Clacton which is about 40 minutes by car.
My dad takes a Class 321 EMU every week day from Clacton to London via Stratford as he needs to change there to go to London.

AWS is the buzzer sound and lights up the "!". The slight beep sound just lets you know that you're cleared to pass (green light), so you don't have to push "Q" to reset the AWS... ;)
In suspense, have done Clacton to Chelmsford many times, looking forward to Chelmsford station. +1.

A dead man's switch is a switch that is automatically operated if the human operator becomes incapacitated, such as through death, loss of consciousness or being physically removed from control. If you don't clear the AWS alarm, then it triggers the emergency brake.

Squirrel, You were having trouble finding your train on the F9 map. There is a button "Center Player" next to Show Task. That will take you directly to your position.
You only have to acknowledge AWS when it alarms, the regular 'ping' doesn't require it. The AWS alarm sounds when the oncoming signal is anything but green (clear).

Paul when the AWS 'Pings' at you it means the signal is green you don't need to press q to clear its when the signal is yellow or red is when you get the warning sign and that's when you press q to clear.
Still good train simulator 2014 videos and please do more.

The people will line up the platform where the train is SUPPOSED to stop. Look for the 4/8/12 car stop signs and try to stop level with them. Takes practice but quite satisfying when you get it right.
You dont need to clear the AWS when the signal is green, Only clear is when the Big Box with a ! in it lights up. You dont Have to stop at a Yellow light, that its just telling you might need to stop at the next signal, if its Red.

Paul theres no need to hit the Q letter when the alarm resets, just when the alarm goes off which warns you of either change of speed or signals ahead

You hit an AWS while in outside view and emergency break was engaged!
15 minutes later I almost fallen dead asleep.
hi I live in Colchester! the town station looks nothing like it at all, but Colchester north, where you coupled trains, looks exactly like that, I think that they've done a great job at creating the station, also just after the station is all the deports, which are all there, so it looks great. Also callumowen1922 is right, you are putting the emergency brake on, just go to 98 percent not 100 and it'll be okay!
When you saw a red signal towards the end of the video, I think that was because you've passed a green signal and each time you pass a signal it becomes red immediately so that in case someone somehow happens to be on the same rail behind you, they must stop at least get some decent distance between them and you.
In other words - your train passing makes every green signal red, you only see it from the outside view, obviously.
You're having to reset the brake because you put it into Emergency. Never go to emergency because it penalizes you in game and irl. Go to Brakes Max and never past that. The trick is to eventually get it to where you're using as little brake as possible.

Just a tip the brakes on the class 360 are amazing so dont be affraid to brake late and you dont have to clear green AWS :p. Just a tip i'm not moaning

@Squirrel. Don't know if you realized this or if someone has mentioned this already but you failed your third task of picking up passengers after coupling your train. The task said pick up passengers from platform 4. You reversed your train into platform 3, coupled your train and then opened your doors on Platform 3!!!!!
Then you proceeded off, merged into the track on platform 4 and drove off!
I noticed this when in your tasks, that one had an 'x' next to it instead of a tick!
