Will never forget the feeling of thinking the sword was in remembrance of Ciri, and then going to the tavern and realizing it was for Ciri
Funny, this was exactly what I thought. However, I believe on the way to the tavern Geralt said something like "I should go back, she doesn't like waiting". It was then that I regained some hope, but it still felt farfetched to me. I thought he was going to meet Yennefer most likely.
Same... was gonna restart from a save 3 hours prior and be a better dad but then she was alive! Yay!
That was definitely the intention, but boy am I glad the ending was happy in the end

I just love the fact that to get the good ending you have to be a good father to Ciri. It's simple but yet so brilliant.
But when you start thinking in a father's point of view, you end up getting a bad ending. Like you try to be there for her and not let her go through anything alone and that's where you get fucked.

@@sujanbharani4491 I was protective too, a lot. I didn´t let her destroy the lab. But there were few moments, when I thought, she´s been through lot, let her have this moment (e.g. when steeling the horses), or cheer her up (khaer morhen snow fight). Also tried to let her have her own mind. She ended as a witcher, very happy to find her alive in the pub. I guess maybe the small moments mattered....

I felt like I was a good father to Ciri in the dialogues and cutscenes but still got the shirty ending? Was there something I missed?

1. I didn't want her to thrash the lab since I thought that was stupid so I tried to calm her down.
2. When she asked me to come with her to meet the witches I did as she asked.
3. When we were at Kaer Morhen there were two options:
-Relax you don't have to be good at everything.
-I know what might cheer you up.
So how was I supposed to know that the first option would lead to drinking and the other to a snowball fight?
I gladly take responsibility for the first two choices. Yeah I admit I seriously fucked up. But when it comes to the third choice I just feel tricked since the text was far too vague.
Edit: There are more dialoge choices that matter but these are the ones that lead me to getting the bad ending.

@@wezzsimple6612 Noone said that ending was shitty. My Ciri died...and that's what many consider to be the bad ending (not in the sense that it's shit narratively) since it means you failed to be a good father. Regardless I think all endings are well made.

I always tried to calm her down and maybe stepped into her life too much and took some decisions for her. Like when Phillippa wanted her to become one of them, I took the choice to tell them, to leave Ciri alone with that (or smth like that, it's been a while since that scene. I spent more time on sidequests)

@@jesscastles7120 In the last few quests Geralt has to take condescension from Phillipa, Yennifer, Avallach'd and then finnally Ciri, despite the fact that he was the one who took out Eredin and his two generals. Couple that with the fact that on my first playthrough I get the worst possible ending no matter how which options I take in the final dialog (I tried, seems they are all pretty much irrelevant) and there you have the reasons why I hate the ending of this game.

Well, the emperor and Geralt don't really have a relationship that's on good terms, do they. It's not like the leader of an empire will confess in some emotional outpouring to the rival of his daughter's affections.
But in the Witcher ending the emperor does seem pained and concerned, asking you if Ciri had said anything about him before, and if you tell him Ciri regreted not being able to talk to him, he responds with an earnest concern. In fact, when you tell him his daughter is dead, he flat out tells you he wishes to never see you again for that very reason, because you are the face of that loss he's just suffered.
As with all things Witcher, relationships are complicated. Ciri has a strained relationship with her father, but as the empress ending shows, when given the chance both seems to reconcile and help each other out with Nilfgaard.
*I KILLED the Emperor!* Ciri had to die, Geralt had to die, but *MOST* *importantly* , the *FILTHY* Invaders never got what they wanted! Talos, a God from another World, taught me how to deal with Scum that invades other Countries!
*This is not the "good" ending. The good ending is you and ciri go fishing. King Radovid is dead. Nilfgaard win the war and kingdom temeria is a vasal state with own army and laws. Had a alliance with Nilfgaardian Empire and novigrad is now a nilfgaardian City. (Sorry for my bad english, information is important)*

I love when you choose the option "Don't do this to me please". Even when geralt said witchers have been stripped of all emotions, he still showing one when he's about to lose that one thing he loves the most

xLetalis witchers have a bit weaker emotions, they are more calm i should say. They are designed to be monster hunters, and its not really required you panic in fight with monster, do some stupid mistake and die, or go into some rage do something stupid and then get sourself into trouble. So they have a bit weaker emotions, or like more stable. But they are still capable of emotions, they are still capable of love, empathy etc. They are just not so easily moved by things like normal humans.

It would do you no good because you have to make the right choices throughout your playthrough to get the good ending

I Call this the best ending rather because of how it made us feel like she actually died whereas she was just waiting in the tavern. I was also mad at myself thinking where did it go wrong.

I love that I did all the things I felt were right for the situations we were in and got rewarded with this ending, great game. Only sad part is the quest is over and I can’t do it again for the first time.

Got this ending for my first playthrough and a part of me shed a tear.
I just finished the game for the second time, and once again I had this ending, and it was great
Many may say that it's a ''fairy tale'' ending, and doesn't fit the books, but for me it's the ideal ending. Ciri is a free spirit, she makes it clear that she wants freedom, and she finally has it. No Wild Hunt, no Avalach, no lodge of sorceresses, just her following the equal path of the one she loves and admires the most.
PS: In Blood and Wine, if you get a visit from Ciri at the end, if she became a witcher, you clearly see that she is much happier than if she had become an empress
Well, technically you don't see her as an empress, so we can't really tell, although I totally see her in the badass empress scenario. Even so, coming to terms with her past (Emhir) is also a good ending, and well, she still had the choice to fake her death like in this ending, but she didn't, so I guess she doesn't hate the idea
The thing is that the witcher can both serious and light-hearted. Its not that this ending isn't realistic, just that usually the way witcher stories go is choosing the lesser of two evils, or being pragmatic.
Ciri would be less happy as an empress yes, but she'd be better than her father or who would be next in line to take up his position.
I was beyond surprised that I got the empress ending despite doing most of the being a good dad moments.

@@zulfikarkaimun1977 you get the empress ending if you decide to bring Ciri to Emhyr, if you choose to not to, then she becomes a witcher
@@ballistic8949 I kinda wanted her to become empress, but I actively avoid looking up the triggers for this or that scenario and try to play game naturally, so I figured dealing with Imlerith right away takes priority over visiting Emhyr. Alas, that one choice makes Ciri become a witcheress. Although technically NOTHING prevents her from turning in to Emhyr later once she's had her fun as a witcheress for a while (assuming Emhyr lives through the war - which he does in my ending).

I know this is an old video. And I know this game is old. But I have to say, it is an emotional masterpiece. I’ve played quite a few games and I have to say this is the first 1 that has immersed me in such a way I felt the emotions, I carried the consequences of actions. I felt bad. I felt good. I was happy sad mad jealous angry all by the end of this game. I got this ending without looking up the “how to’ but I have to say, the emhyr part made me so sad I teared up and almost cried. I love this game more than any other. I replay it often. I have gotten all endings on my own so now when I replay I know which way to go if I want to be “heartless Geralt” or savage or friendly or compassionate. It’s amazing how many endings there truly are. Such a fantastic game.
I usually pick this ending. Some people say that Ciri becoming the empress is the best ending because now she’s safe. My rationale is, this is the best ending because it’s her choice to become a Witcher. Ciri has had everyone around her making her choices without her having any say. Regardless of whether she’s in more danger as a Witcher, it is her choice.
It's a shame that the game doesnt let you abdicate the choice of going to see emyr entirely to ciri. You can say you want her to choose but she makes you pick one or the other.
For me, Ciri being the empress is the ending I chose for 2 reasons. First is to lay out all her cards and let her choose her path. Knowing how it ends and refusing her to meet Emhyr is like manipulating her to choose the life of a Witcher. Second, No witcher died on his own bed. The witcher life is not the best lifestyle, certainly not one you would like for your daughter. So yeah, empress Ciri is bittersweet but it is Ciri's choice.
I agree. I got the empress ending and Ciri did say that she chose it herself. It is also the best for the empire since the persecution of mages and non-humans ends and Temeria gets self-ruling.
For me Empress ending feels like natural progression for Ciri, making her mind up, again, to sacrifice her own wishes for greater good. Being a witcher, always on trail solving troubles, is a life of freedom she loved, but as an empress, she can have a lot more impact on the world than she ever could as a witcher.
I don't think Emhyr bought it - he was simply resigned to the fact that his daughter wanted nothing to do with him.
It's his own fault for abandoning her, burning her kingdom to ashes, killing her grandparents, hunting her for years and, uh... trying to fuck her. Yeah, no wonder she prefers Geralt.

The Lodge wanted to marry her off to make her and her future offspring their puppets (hello, Triss, who was helping achieve that).
Eredin at one point wanted to fuck her instead of their King before ending up killing him (with Ciri's unknowing help, if I'm not mistaken). I must say there was a lot of agro sexual tension in the books between Ciri and Eredin.
In the books it has always been more about her baby than her own potential really.
Jed Ivan Benitez one thing that always confused me about Ithlines prophecy is that it just doesn’t happen if Ciri dies, because she needs a child that rules the world or whatnot. Unless that implies that she faked her death but just never returned to Geralt because she felt he was too controlling?
I ended the game around 4 days ago, first time I finished it and I got this ending, I felt like a boss haha. Almost cried when I saw Ciri at the end, I was sure she died and I was like "I fucked up", then I see Geralt give her his sword, it was like if I was giving it to my own daughter. :P

ks22 I just got done finishing the game and I got this ending I feel pretty good that I got this on my first try without looking up anything
ks22 oh man I went through the exact same roller coaster. First time I finished I reloaded back thinking she died and maybe one of the final choices coulda swayed it lol little did I know at the time. Finally accepted my fate that I fucked up and lost my daughter b/c of it. Wad trying to cheer myself up by looking forward to Toussiant, but then I thoughr it wouldnt be the same w/o Ciri lol. So I'm basically cycling back and forth through all the stages of grief, as I approach the White Orchard Inn to sit down with Yen and have a deppresing convo about how our adoptive daughter is dead b/c we failed her and oh btw peace bitch I'm off with Triss. When Ciri peeked her face through the hoody, I swear I felt elation like never before in a game. I swear to you this man was practically at tears of joy over these two characters who he thought he'd never see together again. Most rewarding end game experience ever personally 11/10
yeah me too, her "is it done?", it was her voice ♥. I was like "did she really die?" Could not believe my choices sucked that much, when she entered the White Frost, I said: "Thats it, she will die, she was not meant to go in there and I was the idiot for not doing the right choices" I did not even say anything to her at that moment (the option to stay quiet at the game).
Later on, this sword master gives you a sword with her name, I took as "now her spirit lives in this sword" lol then I see Geralt giving the sword to her and her expression was so adorable, that ending made me so happy. :D

MY EYE tears at the sight of ciri as a child running towards geralt 12:46 i just felt like thats the better ending than being empress she is like a bird kept in a cage sacrificing her happiness for the good of the world but this ending it resembles more happiness and becoming more of like father like daughter ending

Sorcerers by names Vilgefortz and Istredd used melee weapons in books. Vilgefortz masterly wielded a 6ft metal staff (in two books), Istredd - an actual sword (though never used it in the story called 'Shard of ice').

Wrong, the only reason Vilgefortz was able to beat the shit out of Geralt was because he was using magic which enhanced him to superhuman proportions. If they were fighting without magic, Vilgefortz wouldn't stand a chance against Geralt. Though he is still a good fighter by human standards.
Avallach is not a "mage", he is elven sage of Aen Elle and a war criminal in the past.

No. It's better to end things when they conclude. Remember Mass Effect trilogy? And then Bioware got greedy, tried to squeeze more money out of the title and shat out ME: Andromeda? I love the ME trilogy as well, but pretend that Andromeda never existed. It's an embarrassment to the trilogy.
I got exactly this ending on my first gameplay, just followed my heart with the options. Needless to say, I was a happy man.
All I heard was that Geralt dies in the end, so I had no idea it was possible to survive the game. The battle at Kaer Moren, I was thinking... this must be it... then fighting the wild hunt... then meeting the emperor... I ended up with the good ending and I was overjoyed. Then depressed that the greatest game I have ever played is over.

Dude i was legit about to burst into tears after Ciri “sacrificed” herself. I named the sword after her and was thinking I’d be using it for the rest of the game in a way to remember her. However the second I saw her at the tavern I literally lost my sh*t and cheered from happiness. One of the greatest games I’ve ever played!

That part with Emhyr… Man, I love Charles Dance’s performance.
In my first playthrough, I'd already known that Ciri either ends up dead, a Witcher or as the Empress. I thought about it long and hard even before the game brought it up. My thoughts are this: Ciri, as the Empress, seems to be the logical conclusion to the series. She would've had a positive impact on Nilfgaard as a Monarch, and it also goes to show that she picks the choice on her own.
But is that really good for her? Is that really good for the Ciri that we get to know throughout the game? Ciri always came across as a free spirit. Someone who loves to travel and explore, meet new people. Seeing her on the throne, bound by her duties as a Monarch would feel as though Ciri has been shackled. Something that Ciri iterates time and again is how she wants lead a 'normal' life; Away from being a princess, away from people who are after her because of her abilities. I can always imagine the adventures that Ciri would have if she chose the path of a Witcher, the people whose lives she would change and ultimately we, as Geralt, can hope that she'd be happy.
There is one thing that I disagree with what Ciri said in this particular ending. The fact that she, as the Empress, would have a greater impact on the world. While that can be said to be the case, she is forgetting literal antithesis to that notion. Geralt himself. Over the course of the games that we've played as Geralt (Witcher 1,2 & 3) we can see just how great an impact that he, as a Witcher, has had on the world. It can even be said that he has had more of an influence on the state of the world than a Monarch has had. It isn't as obvious, due to the fact that he's 'just' a Witcher and not some King whose actions are easier to pin down, but nonetheless they have a ripple effect on grave matter. Also, let's not forget the power of small acts of kindness that Geralt performs (provided you didn't role-play as a pseudo bandit-witcher), even if it was just completing a contract for a particularly troublesome monster in some obscure 'little' village. Those actions have their own power.
I don't think that either ending is 'better' than the other. Though I have to give CDPR props for creating a narrative which ends up being good according to each individual. What I mean by that is that it is up to us, as the player, to think up what is best for Ciri. Almost as though she actually IS our daughter. And that is what sets this game's ending apart from most others. You may think that Ciri should grow up and assume the responsibilities as an Empress, or you may think that Ciri should be a free spirit and walk the path, the same as Geralt. Neither choice is worse than the other if viewed from a distance. Yet, we will have our preference for what appeals to us more; And that, I think, is what makes the ending worth the entire journey.

She is not pushing Geralt away because he is annoying, but because she truly cares for him.
Got the good ending first time playing, i think this tells us so much about who we are, the choices you made in the game, are reflections about yourself.

I wish it would let you bring ciri along with you on contracts with the witcher ending, and maybe even get to play as her, that would be perfect

First time played. I was heart broken. Literally almost in tears, seeing the sword and all thinking she truly was dead. Then we get to the inn...and I was like WHAT. Goddamn CDPR are truly world class story tellers. Truly a "They had us in the first half moment".

The ending where Ciri is never seen again and the last Crone is killed is the best ending: Your interpretation of the game ending is all that matters. The game said at the end that CIRI DISAPPEARS . It does not say she dies. Geralt thinks that she is dead. But he thought that ciri is dead a few times within the main game as well only to be happily proven wrong later. At one point geralt even thinks that CIRI is Una. Of course he is proven wrong at a later stage when Una turns out to be avallache. So, Yes Ciri has disappeared but She is not dead by any means. She has simply chosen to not return back to Geralt (or Nilfgard) in this particular ending of the game. Whether this is a good or bad step depends upon your interpretation. I personally think this step of hers is better than the ones shown in other endings.
I got that ending yesterday but today I went back, did one dialogue option differently, then got a goodish ending(I didn't kill Radovid so it's still a little bad)

I had this ending on my first playthrough (although in my ending it was Svanrige who ruled Skellige). I remember playing the epilogue in middle of night, sad that Ciri died, angry on REDs because I wanted to save her and then actually realising that it was trick and she lived. One of the best, if not the best expierience in my gaming history. For me it will always be the best and canonical ending. I remember almost everything from this playthrough, all my decisions, all quests I missed, how I reacted to every emotional scene, even which armor I had on most crucial moments. Oh... That was THE EXPIERIENCE.
When i first got the sword i really thought ciri was dead and it was for geralt to remember her. but i was confused cause it had no damage stats on it.
Then he arrived to the taven and I was like "OH SHIT IT'S A GIFT!"

This was the ending I got. It was at the same time moving, fulfilling and plaintive. Until of course when I set out to meet Olgierd and after travelled to Toussaint. Now I've completed the journey that I started a year ago. This game is the greatest ever. I don't think that anything can ever surpass it even though the mechanics and the hardware will improve. Thank you Projekt Red, thank you xLetalis.
I totally thought Ciri was dead because Garralt had said so, then I paused it to look up a good ending and found that it wasn't over yet. So I continued and sure enough she was alive! I was soo happy!

I think Emhyrs last words to Geralt go deeper than most think. He doesn’t want to see Geralt again because that would mean he’s in a very bad situation. Like earlier in the game where Emhyr said asking for a Witcher’s help would be his last option. and seeing Geralt would only bring painful memories of Ciri.

It would be great to have a new witcher definitely but it shouldn't be focused on Geralt's story anymore. Ciri's own adventures after these major events would be exciting. I would still like to have Geralt to appear as a side character or at least has a cameo or hint.
I just recently finished my first play through, and let me tell you -- this game's story telling, and just the overall experience in general, put it within my top 5 games off all time.
It absolutely threw me! As my first play through, I didnt look up any guides or how-to's, so I could fully experience the game. They left such a cliffhanger after she went into the tower! And when Geralt visits the Emperor? Tells him she's dead? I actually believed it! I was heartbroken! And when the scene came where he asked the people if they needed help with the wagon, I was sure I had the worst ending ever. I was PISSED! I was hopeful when it said to meet someone at the fort, but when I got the sword and gave him the jewels, I thought Geralt purchased the sword simply to commemorate Ciri. Sooo bummed out. Then? Tells me to go to the Inn. I was thinking it was going to be a romance scene (I got tricked into the Yen & Triss "threesome", so I had no romance ending for my first play through), but when I get there?

Threw me for SUCH a loop, and I can't remember a game that brought out such involvement and emotion from the player. Hands down an amazing game. Time for a NG+ run on Death March! No HUD!

hahahahahah exactly the same happened to me. I thought ciri died, i was just feeling bad. I closed the game just before you find ciri again. That night i went to eat with my GF, i was so sad that my GF asked me what happend to me. When i told her she laughed hard, she didnt understand how bad i felt.
After that i fired up the game again to finish it, with 0 hope that ciri will be alive. When i saw it i allmost cried hahahah i hit the desk, i was so fucking happy.
I love the fact, that i exactly got this ending. What a story - brilliant, just brilliant.
When I heard ciri is dead, i nearly was starting to cry but when I saw her, I was blown away.
The endings would be 100x better if they implement a companion option like in skyrim. Imaging being able to ask Triss, Yen, Ciri, and other chars to do leftover quests with you. Its not that hard to implement since the game already has the companion mechanic (doing various quests with npcs). It's just sad how all the chars in the game disappear after you complete the main quests, kaer morhen is so empty.
I'm counting on modders on this.

That is the most original ending in my opinion and we cant know geralt died or not. Moreover, that is the only ending you are able to kill the last crone.

This was my first ending, I felt emotional and I’m glad I got it :(
Before choose “Good luck, Ciri” on my first playtrough i was scared cause i didnt know what gonna happen next and i didnt wanna Ciri dies and Geralt lost his Daugther again after all the shit that they went through, but that last dialog between them put a smile on my face and even more when i saw her alive.
The encourage that Geralt gives to Ciri and her reaction is priceless.
I almost stop playing when i was ride on horse trough Velen to the tabern without knowing what did just happen with Ciri.
The witcher 3 has some of the most dynamic and compelling story telling i have ever seen in any game/tv show/book etc. the characters feel real, when they're sad you're sad, when they laugh you smile, it's a magical feeling indeed, and if this game has taught me anything it's to always find out both sides of a story before making an ultimate decision from which there is no coming back from, not just in the game but in day to day life too.
