Detlaff being dead sucks. I still feel as though this 'good ending' is actually the worst ending. The only one who suffers in this ending is Regis. Which is hardly fair, seeing how hard he worked to try and save everyone. I much prefer th ending I got, which was Syanna, Anna and Detlaff die. They all deserved it in my opinion. Petty, the lot of them.

If you think about it, the Forgiveness ending is very fitting for Geralt, since it can be considered a redemption for him. His whole adventure began when he earned his title the “Butcher of Blaviken” and killing Renfri. Granted, he only mentioned her once in Blood and Wine, but the whole quest is pretty much revolving around the event that started his story. CDPR’s epilogue for Geralt’s journey isn’t just a hunt against a higher vampire, but something far more internal: To not fail again when he had on Renfri.

We can't exactly measure his actions as we'd measure actions of a human. I still belive that all this situation is fault of the royal sisters only - Syanna knew that she's dealing with a extremely dangerous being that thought patterns cannot be comprehend fully, and still tried to play him just to enact a petty revenge.
So for me, Detlaff is as much of a victim in all of this as anyone else

you know, i believe the two "good" endings (a.k.a. the ones where Anarietta doesn't die), are a perfect synthesis of the Witcher's way of looking at the world
as Geralt once said, he is not a mindless slayer, he kills only the monsters that are too dangerous and stupid to coexist, that is why he rarely kills sentient monsters (unless they are too deranged). Putting into his words, "Witchers protect both worlds, humans and monsters".
And in those two endings, you, as many other times, have to choose which side to take.
Side with the humans, sparing Syanna and convincing her to forgive Anarietta. Everyone in Toussaint is all happy and bubbly, the beloved Duchess and her loving sister together leading Toussaint towards a radiant future...but at the price of killing a sentient monster, that because of his inhuman nature was not able to understand the subtileties of a potentially evil human mind and thus too easily swayed, and the voluntary exile of another one, that you ended up befriending, branded an outcast by his own kin, for being forced to put a stop to a deranged developement
Side with the monsters, letting Syanna be killed. The "villain", after all, understands he has done wrong for he was swayed, and leaves for good Toussaint, freeing the city of the vampire terror; furthermore, another sentient monster is not forced to take actions against his own kin, and can keep living peacefully. And yet, a human life was taken, a sister will never see her sibling anymore, nor will she ever be able to cope with the double loss of that dear person; the townsfolk will not see a resolution, since the "beast" was not "slain", thus still keeping that fear in the back of their hearts. And again, your inactivity resulted in the death of a human, a human that you were tasked to save, that you strove to save till the very end...
This is why The Witcher is an awesome universe. As the lady from the orphanage said, there is never only black or white, and rarely you can ever get a true "good" ending

    • @brettmiddleton7949
      @brettmiddleton7949 5 ปีที่แล้ว +54

There is one more option. After Dettlaff kills Syana, you can kill Dettlaff. And I would vote for this as the best ending out of those we're offered.
Dettlaff has gone too far. He didn't really give Syana a fair hearing, broke the word of his friend Regis, and left Geralt in a very bad -- possibly fatal -- situation with the duchess despite all Regis and Geralt tried to do for him. He arranged the incredible loss of life and property in Beauclair of his own free will. (And it was bad. Listen to the herald outside the armorer's later, and walk through Beauclair to see all the reconstruction and listen to the citizens.) There's no guarantee that he won't be a danger in the future, either, despite what he says. Dettlaff just can't be allowed to walk away from all that, despite the sympathy one feels for him. Even Regis agrees, though he has his own peculiar vampirish reasons for why he cooperated in bringing Dettlaff down in this scenario.
Likewise it hardly seems just for Syana to be completely forgiven and spend the rest of her life living like royalty at the duchy's expense, trading on her victimization. Perhaps death is too harsh a punishment, but it's the only one available. At least two of the knights she had killed were not really evil men, though Crespi, at least, was a waste of oxygen. And she is directly responsible for the deaths of more than just those four knights. What about the singer whose throat was cut by a man acting on her orders? What about those killed by the bandits under her command? She made a conscious decision of her own free will to become a human monster, and there's no guarantee that she won't be a danger to anyone in the future. I don't think it's right to allow her to walk away from all that, despite the sympathy one feels for her.
As for the duchess, though she is not in a class with Radovid or Emhyr, she is a horrible, irresponsible ruler. If it wouldn't throw the duchy into complete disarray, I wouldn't mourn her death overmuch. Being driven out of the duchy by an outraged peasantry would work for me, but I guess they're happy with their misrule. So she gets a pass despite my having very little sympathy for her.

Stick to the motto of the Witcher. Syanna and Detlaff were both evil, only differing in their contribution to the deaths. One was the orchestrator while the other was just a tool. Both of them needed to die imo. And tbh Anarietta is a bitch living in a child's daydream while ruling a vast duchy.

I originally posted this under another comment, but when I read this thread I thought it would be just as fitting here. Fair warning: long winded diatribe to follow. TL;DR at the bottom.
Blood and Wine is the only case I've ever encountered where I consider everyone dying to be the best ending. Syanna had to die for orchestrating the murder of five people including her own sister. Dettlaff had to die for burning Beauclaire to the ground.
Anna Henrietta is a slightly different case. She protected her psychopath of a sister over the people she was sworn to defend. I get it. She loved her sister, but the people wouldn't have seen it that way. There would've been a viscous, bloody revolt.
Anna Henrietta was still very well liked at the time, so her death would've been mourned instead of celebrated, stabilizing the situation before further blood was shed.
The main quest of Blood and Wine is a classic tragedy through and through, but it also shows that some good can come from all the pain. The "bad" ending fits perfectly with the tone of the expansion, whereas letting Dettlaff kill Syanna just leaves you feeling empty, and the forgiveness ending feels so out of the blue that it left me scratching my head wondering what just happened, while also not resolving Syanna's story. We don't get to see what happens to her after the trial. We don't even hear the verdict.
TL;DR, I think CDPR dropped the ball with the "good" ending, and the one where everyone dies is much better from a story perspective.

Syanna, the real monster in this story gets killed by who she manipulated, he gets his revenge and closure, he leaves thus stopping the murders in Toussaint, Regis keeps his blood brother and friend, Regis isn’t outcast by his own kind. She was always considered an outcast because of some theory and she only ever sought revenge on the knights that abused her as a child and left her for dead in the woods, she also explains how Detlaff was incredibly intense in the relationship and it was hard to end because he didn’t understand human relationships so she just disappeared to get away from him. I didn’t feel bad killing him after he just butchered a whole city too so.

The problem I have is that at anytime, Dettlaff could have just let it go. Appeal to the better man that Regis knew him to be, but whether or not the lie had broken him or the despair of never really having known the only woman he ever loved, is not relevant. At the end of the day he could have been a better person than Syanna. But as much as it breaks Regis' heart (and trust me Regis by the end of this is the only one I really give two shits about), Dettlaff had become a monster. If he could have forgiven, I would have had no qualms about letting him go. However he couldn't. But Syanna can let her hatred go. This proves it. I am looking to issues of recidivism. Syanna isn't going to hurt anyone else and can be punished for her crimes. Dettlaff couldn't be beyond what he instigates when he doesn't get his way. Don't take that to mean that I don't empathize more with Dettlaff than I do Syanna. Because I feel far worse for him than her. But feelings don't change the facts.
Also if you don't kill Dettlaff you'll never see the noblest man of them all... The Shelter Keeper.
    "And you help them why?"
    "...Because they need help."
All through out Blood and Wine you see the pillar of the Five Virtues not in the Knights but in the Peasants around Toussaint. I could list them but there are plenty of examples. People who don't look out for themselves but for others... and they're the ones I most remember from this expansion.

You act as if they had not set this up from the beginning though. Dettlaff never judged the world in subtle details, he was also much more emotional than normal humans. Syanna knew this well and planned to use him in her plans. Unfortunately for her, she was not as smart as she thought and got discovered. I am honestly shocked about how many people forgive Syanna for her crimes just because Dettlaff did something worse. People do understand that it is possible to punish more than one person? Syanna should have received a harsh punishment. She has just as much blame as Dettlaff for inviting an unstable high vampire to the party through manipulation and deception.

Very true. B&W is not about a blamegame, but rather about a seemingly endless cycle of spite, hatred and revenge which drags people in, who in turn keep this cycle going.
When Syanna chooses to put her life on the line to save the city, forgive her sister and undergo trial, that is the moment when she breaks this cycle.
Detlaff is to the point where he can not do such thing anymore. He will not even attempt to listen, let alone forgive, Syanna (what did he even need 3 days for, then?), will attack Geralt when she disappears and Regis if he protects him, will face not even a mock trial if he gets away.
And this is why this ending is the best one, because it truly brings this toxic cycle to an end in a natural way.

  • @kirikakirikakirika
    @kirikakirikakirika 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

Syanna and Dettlaff are both tragic characters. I'm definitely more sympathetic toward Syanna, though. She was tormented by everyone around her just because of a lousy myth, then abused, exiled, r*ped (as a child, no less), and left for dead by the very knights who were supposed to _protect_ her. Imagine how badly that would mess with someone's head. Then she had to live her life as a bandit, scraping by, watching her sister live in the lap of luxury.
Dettlaff is a vampire wandering in a world he doesn't understand and can't comprehend. That saddest part is, if Syanna simply asked him for help, he probably would've done it, but she was so broken by that point that being honest didn't even occur to her.
For me, she earned my respect when she agreed to meet with Dettlaff. Syanna absolutely, 100% didn't have to face him, but you could tell she felt guilty. If Anna hadn't locked her up, it wouldn't have been a problem. Moreover, she only killed the men who directly hurt her.
Dettlaff lost my sympathy when he attacked all of Bouclair. Even Regis chastised him for it: "Dettlaff, please. All this over one woman?"
After seeing all the dead orphans, I knew Dettlaff had to die. He's a ticking time bomb. Naive and emotional. If you let him live, what happens the next time someone ticks him off?
For me, the most unfortunate part of killing him ... is that Regis becomes a nethama and gets cast out. That's the only thing that made me regret my choice. Regis doesn't deserve to suffer for Dettlaff's mistakes.

If you're nice to her in the Land of Fables, she _heavily_ implies it by saying she was beaten and _abused_ by the knights. "Abused" in Medieval settings (and most period pieces) means raped. She also mentions her dress being torn after the fact. If you're rude to her, she doesn't mention this at all, likely because it's too personal and traumatic. She'll only talk about being beaten, but she won't talk about the abuse. When she found the bandits, she tells you she thought they'd rape her too, but when they didn't she learned "a bandit can be a better man than a knight". And if you sleep with her, she also mentions using Geralt "like so many men use women". It's very clear something horrible happened to her.

Syanna: Mhm. But Crespi was not ordered to beat me unconscious with a horsewhip after my first attempt at escape. And du Lac had no instructions to deny me food and abuse me.

There's three dialogue options that branch in different directions. That's only one of them. Also note that she separates "abuse" from being beaten and deprived of food, when in most cases that would already be considered abuse, making the word "abuse" redundant ... unless it means something else. And don't forget she also mentions her dress being torn and women feeling used by men. This is the typical language of a rape victim. Just the line "knights are not so chivalrous when no one's watching" is pretty dark and accusatory.

    @arthurescudeiro7399 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

I think that this discussion of wich ending was "the best" is really interesting, here is my opinion on it:
Syanna did what she did because she was severely abused while a child, so all that she knew was that pain and isolation, her life was ruined by those people from Toussaint. Since then, she wanted nothing but revenge, because she had nothing but pain and sourness. Not saying that she was right in doing so (especially the part of manipulating Detlaff), but she had very strong reasons for doing it. And, the plan was that only the knights who abused her would die. Annarietta didn't deserve to die, but Syanna didn't know that, in her mind she had betrayed her, and was as bad as the people who exiled her.
Though, I think that Detlaff needed to die. He was used, thats true, but that doesn't excuses him for trying to destroy everyone in the city. His fight was only with Syanna. Even kids in the orphanage died in the slaughter. He proved that if he has a problem with someone, he can do horrible things to lots of inocent people, thus being a dangerous monster.
Annarieta lived with the thought that she failed Syanna, and that this is why Syanna did all this bad things. Because of her. I believe that this is why Anna didn't send Syanna to the prison straight away, she felt guilty of what Syanna had become and had done, and wanted to show compassion for her, something that Syanna hadn't gotten from anyone but bandits.
So yeah, I agree with this being the good ending. None of the three were perfect good guys, and they werent bad guys either. But, Detlaff's slaughter was uncalled for and he, unfortunately, showed to be more of a beast than a senscient being. A danger to other creatures. Whereas Syanna and Annarietta had strong reasons to do what they did.

I wish you could slap Triss for what she did. She's as manipulative as Syanna, except nobody dies. Triss' whole point is "I'm jealous that my best friend got a hot witcher as a bf so imma take him cuz he lost his memory lmao". Triss was a go go choice in the witcher one because canonically Yen died at the end of the book series, so it did make sense, but if you read the books you really dislike this kind of a replacement. Also, Shani was stupid too, considering a fact that she was mentioned briefly in the books, including a scene of Geralt sneaking into her room and fucking her immediately after.

I find it interesting just how like Dettlaff Syanna truly is. Like him, she's a very primal individual: one who has a hard time getting along with others, let alone being able to trust them. The way she talked made it seem that the only people she considered truly family was her little sister, in a sense the two of them could very well be considered a 'Pack' in the eyes of the Vampire race. And much like her former lover, she was consumed by her emotions when she was "betrayed" by not only the people around her, but by the one person she adored above all others.

While I feel sorrier for Dettlaff for what he thought he was doing out of love... he couldn't be reasoned with in the end. You CAN bring Syanna back from the brink of sheer evil and madness. Whether that means she should be forgiven is entirely up to the individual player. I can't. But then again, I am also not willing to swing the sword either and end her life and so I reserve my judgement.

If they didn't end up together then so be it, but at least they should both know the other did in fact love them once.

Both Dettlaff and Syanna were victims at first, but both also chose to carry out evil on their own once they were put in a bad situation. Their stories mirror each other. I think that the bad ending aka "death to all" is the -best- most fitting/realistic: 1) Syanna who was the mastermind behind all the tragedy dies for her actions, 2) Dettlaff, despite according to Regis being kind at the bottom of heart but "too emotionally unstable", killed at least half of Beauclair and did not seem to care much about Regis' request to end this madness.... Bottom line is he crossed the line. 3) As for Duchess well, she had to open her eyes and see what her sister was really like, plus because of her character being as annoying as that of Emhyr... Despite all I do pity Regis, after all he did not wish for the whole bloodshed. Anyway good job uploading all these videos and let us hope that CDPR will make another Witcher game with Ciri being the main character but Geralt also making several cameos

The worst thing she did was mock Geralt for not finding Dettlaff and was blind to how bad her sister was which seems like human nature to me. Neither of those even remotely deserve death. She is a well loved ruler in Toussaint and without her chaos could ensue. The most fitting end imo is Syanna and Dettlaff dead.

It's the worst ending for Regis, lost his blood-bound brother friend (Dettlaff), got the hate of the other vampires who want to kill him now, Syanna still lives, although she was the reason for the whole tragedy and Regis hates her the most, and he got exiled from a whole region (Toussaint).
And yet Syanna is still a villain, she's an Alfa, she ruled a whole group of bandits, she lived all her past life as a villain, won't change in one night, she will never accept to sit down quite and be ruled by her little sister, sooner or later she will seek the throne, and likely to kill Anna if she to not surrender it peacefully.
The all lose ending is a just for all, Geralt got the least losses tho (I'm selfish her). When all (Dettlaff, Syanna and Anna) are dead - (killing Anna is unjustified, but she's too trusting, even she knew her villain angry sister is behind all the catastrophic tragedies, and that she is seeking her demise, she still offer her clemency without any punishment or restrictions, this is insanely unfair),,, Geralt doesn't go to jail, fulfills his contract best (killed the beast and brought back Syanna unharmed) and got paid, he still loses his allies in the dutchy (Anna Henrietta dies and new unknown rulers will be there), and Regis got exiled.

It becomes hard to empathize with a character when she shits on everyone in almost every scene with little justification or provocation. Geralt and Lambert are also disrespectful in their own ways, but they have traits that are visible to the player to make up for this shortcoming. CDPR didn't see fit to have any of Yennifer's positive traits shine through in this game, which I think is a shame, but it is what it is.

That they are.... about humans. Monsters are a separate subject, and Dettlaff was specifically in Witcher's contract. Sparing him is not being a "neutral witcher", it's being an "incapable witcher".

Wish there was an ending with both sisters dead and Detlaff lives.
I thought you have to let Syanna live to fight Detlaff.
If I knew you could still fight Detlaff and let Syanna die. I would've gone for that instead.

I think they know how to create perfect drama in their stories. Suddenly felt i might even cry. Maybe it felt that strong because Anna and Sylvia's relationship drama resonates with me so similarly. Oh well.

Cant believe i was just one "correct" answer away from the "forgiving end" - everyone died in my first playthrough. At least i got Yen at Corvo Bianco.
Only thing i miss in the conversation with Yen though: Wanna go behind the bushes? ;)

As much as we all love Geralt, this is the ending of his story. Like he says in his conversation with Regis, he's earned a rest. It would be awesome to have Geralt appear in the next Witcher game, but I feel like this is a great way for his story to end.

    • @jaanu2222

@@DariusOfPersia well we and geralt have already rested a lot , it wouldn't hurt anyone if he would return again in the next game , the whole book , stories goes around him , his quests adventure etc. so i never accepted the fact that his story has ended.

@@jaanu2222 It's hard to imagine a Witcher game without Geralt, but we'll have to get used to it. CDPR has already said that whenever the next Witcher game comes out, it won't be about Geralt. I'd still love it if he made an appearance, though.

On my first play i had this ending, but i loaded back to let Dettlaff live. I didn't do it because i liked Dettlaff so much, only because that's what a friend who risked turning into a slag wanted.

I felt to much bad for Syanna. The game sensors the line a bit but she got raped and all. She could not make bonds, she actually loved Detlaff, but was to afraid to make bonds, move on and have a life (she says that), she've already accepted her "uselessness" to the world just wanted to die but before... Revenge, she accepted her that much before list everything for a drip of wine just to get a last pleasure. Her story is just a bunch of unfortunate events, and lack of therapy hehe, that was not yet developed.
Everyone here is a victim in a way.
I feel sorry for Ana as well, imagine being a kid facing a hole "Senate", nervous, seeing your sister getting punished, the king, the nobles, ministers, everyone is angry, everyone staring at you what would you do?
Well that's why I love the witcher.
