  • Sea shell hunting in Florida on Captiva allowed me to find some sea shells I hadn't found before. Somehow I always end up finding something interesting - even when there's not much on the beach to find.

    Watching these shell videos have become a nightly routine when getting my daughters (1 year and 3 years old) to bed. They get so excited to watch it but your voice is so soothing that they always fall asleep before it’s over lol. Theses videos are so relaxing!

    One of the many reasons I love watching your videos is: the way you shoot your videos without making me dizzy. A lot of videos by others are taken without any editing and they move there camera so quickly that it makes them difficult to watch!, Thanks for making it so enjoyable to watch your videos!

    I've never commented before, but I wanted to tell you how much your videos have meant to me. Sanibel and shelling has always been our happy place and favorite vacation activity. We haven't been able to get there for two years due to Covid and then caring for my mom. I look forward to your videos every week as a bright spot in my life. Oh my gosh, my heart melted with those Bittersweet Clams - they are some of my favorites to pick up! They are definitely MUCH more common on Florida's south east coast, but so awesome to see you find them!
    Interestingly enough, I do believe some species of live Augers possess the ability to sting(like Cones) - though I am not sure about the American Auger.

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hmmm, come to think of it I've never found a live auger! I've seen them inhabited by the tiniest crabs, but I've never seen a live specimen. I'll have to make sure not to get too friendly should I find one! And I was totally psyched to see those bittersweet clams too!

    Just wanted to drop you a comment on how good you are at filming, commentating, and editing your videos. I have been looking at several other sheller's videos and have been disappointed and irritated by most of them. Many of them move the camera too fast, blurring the view and almost causing motion sickness. 🤢 Some of them only film the ground while they grab the shell without showing us the shell itself. Most of them do not identify all the shells they pick up. And a lot of them do not understand where the focal point is for their camera and do not understand how to balance their volume.😒 One even used politically incorrect descriptive terms. You were the first sheller I followed and now I know that I definitely found the best first. 👌 Your voice is so nice to listen to and you make the video fun. I sincerely hope that you enjoy making these videos as much as we all enjoy watching them. Thank you. You are greatly appreciated. 🤗

      Thank you so much so all the amazing feedback! I try to make my videos as enjoyable as possible, and I'll throw as many tide-bits of knowledge I've picked up along the way as well. I do truly love my beach walks - some are a little more fun than others, but there is always something new to admire and I'm so lucky this is the area of Florida we chose to move to. Thank you for choosing to come along with me on my beach walks!

    Hi, Charmon! Great little haul today! You were mentioning the dark sand at Captiva. It reminded me of the sand we see at Tawas Bay State Park, on Lake Huron, on Michigan's East (Sunrise side) coast. Most of the sand is beige and sugar white, but there are layers of dense black sand, too. It's actually fine, black magnetite, a form of iron pyrite, if memory serves me correctly. Remember the toy we used to play with where we'd use a magnet to drag iron filings to bald Willy's scalp and face? Well, those filings are magnetite. It's often a reliable indicator for the presence of flour gold, and you can skim it off the wet sand and try your hand at panning it out. Use a magnet to remove the black "sand", and there's your flour gold. It's often found in the River Thames, too. No need to thank me; my head is just full of all kinds of trivial, mostly-useless nuggets that I'm only too glad to pass on. Love your channel!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I want you on my Trivial Pursuit team! I always go for the green questions, which you're probably good at too, but just the same. So I did a little reading about Florida sand - it's mostly quartz from the Appalachian mountains if you can believe that. The slope of Captiva is different than Sanibel (which is why Sanibel typically will have more shells) so I'm wondering if that's why the sand is darker. The soft white sand can't make it up onto the beach. I was going to maybe go to the Captiva library to see if I could find someone that knows the answer but not sure when I can make it over there. And now I want to bring a magnet to the beach with me to see if anything sticks!

    • @pbonniejean
      @pbonniejean 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SWFBeachLife OH! I hope you will! That'd be a really neat short...or maybe longer video? I can believe it about sand coming from so far. Here in Michigan, we get so many minerals and rocks that have traveled from the Arctic and other areas, dragged by the glaciers that gouged the Great Lakes for us. By the way, did you know that the entire Gt. Lks. region is still rebounding upward from the weight of those glaciers? Honest! That soft white sugar sand at Lake Superior can get oven-hot in the Summer sun; not a place for strappy sandals. The waves wash the magnetite onto it and from afar, it sometimes looks like zebra stripes when its all riffle-textured. Yes, I do believe we are kindred spirit trivia geeks! LOL

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pbonniejean Kindred nerds unite! That is so neat about the striped sand. The sand down here doesn't get hot in the summer like some of the other sands do. I suppose it's the quartz and crushed shell. The sand on the east coast - woo boy, you better bring shoes or you'll be dancing all the way to the water!

    The beaches are so calm I honestly can’t fathom that. Beaches here on the west coast of West Australia (Perth) etc are never like that and I mean NEVER. When watching you it makes me feel like your at a lake, lol.
    Even if our waves were kinda calmish there’d still be crashing smaller waves on the shore, never would the waters just gently lap like in this video.
    Infact if you stand just knee deep the current/pull of the waves going in n out can often unbalance you just in the shallows. You wouldn’t be able to peer thru clear waters either, it’d be all swirling misty sand, maybe a lil sea weed.
    So so envious. If I get over to the US again (that’s if I can ever afford it again, lol) Il definitely be going shelling at every destination I can find.
    W a lovely day with you on Captiva Beach…it’s certainly “Capti-vated “ my mind. 💙🙏🏻🐡🐙🐬🐠🐚🐚🐚

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I grew up with the cold Atlantic up in New Jersey so it took me quite a while to wrap my head around the calm Gulf waters and the fact they get WARM in the summer. The ocean gets WARM!! We don't get the waves like the East Coast so on a calm day you can watch the shells just rolling around in the surf and pick them up. I hope you do get to visit here again. Maybe even go on a shell tour to one of the fantastic islands we have!

  • @shellstories

    Captiva never disappoints! Those turbans were so cool. I believe the mystery shell at 11:26 is a Comb Bittersweet. The Scallop at 13:53 I think is a Calico, I don't think Bay scallops get such bright red coloration, and just the overall shape seems to match Calico better in my opinion. What a fun beach exploration!

    • @SWFBeachLife
      @SWFBeachLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A comb bittersweet - of course! I should have considered that with all the other East Coast shells I was finding. I do have a hard time telling the different between the larger calicos and the bay scallops - which I know also come in a white coloration. So many fantastic mysteries out there. Thanks so much for watching!

      Congrats on coming to Florida! What area will you be visiting? Marco Island is about an hour from Fort Myers so some of these places are a little spread out. Hi Sharmon
    Thank you so much for taking us with you on your beach walk adventures!
    I'm the typical "crazy cat lady" so I love the kitten paws!😻
    I've tried Google image for your mystery shell at 11:25...... could it be a Comb Bittersweet?
    Just had a family weekend in a house near the see. Unfortunately I wasn't able to walk on the beach and search for shells, but seeing the see from almost every window in the house was such a treat!😍
    Wishing you a wonderful week, can't wait to see your next video!

I hope it it brought you some strength and it's restorative powers for weeks to come! I hope you are well and you have a good rest of your week! ❤️

      You nailed it on the head! I went to the Sanibel Shell show and while I like oogling at the shells, there's just something about the ones you find for yourself. I had no interest in buying any shells - but now I want to travel the world and see what I can find! Until that happens I'll just keep roaming these gorgeous Florida beaches. And with any luck I'll stumble upon that Junonia one of these days! 🙏🏼

    I think a lot of the complete kitten paws are actually fossilized as they're really solid without even an split at the opening edge. Don't think I've ever found a bittersweet here, but they are also common in the panhandle. I would guess the mystery shell at 11:21 is some kind of bittersweet also (comb perhaps?) because of the thickness. The coral actually built on the kp. They build on lots of stuff, just like barnacles. I have a barnacle on a piece of styrofoam as a souvenir. Yeah, orange ct's are common here. I think I sent you a pair of earrings out of some. Congrats on the flats! Hope those orange ct's dried nice and bright for you. Sometimes they look a lot different dry. Very cool find with the r/b ark! Don't think I've ever found one of those. I feel the same way leaving Honeymoon over the Dunedin causeway. Thanks. Sharmon!😘

      I've heard that about the kitten paws - but how do you know if they're fossilized or alive? I've found those bittersweet on the East Coast but it was a really nice surprise to have them show up! And yes, I do believe that mystery shell was a bittersweet comb - I should have thought of that since I was finding so many of the other bittersweet! I did look at the jewelry you sent for a bring orange CT but they weren't that really great bright orange color. Such a fun surprise! I went through the other turbans I have and I think if I dip it it might be a bright orange one too. I guess I'm going to find out! Thanks for watching Ginger! ❤️

    Loved all the small shells. I was on Turner in January and there was an enormous pile of shells right next to the rock pile that separates Turner and Blind Pass. Shelled both beaches did really well on Blind Pass. Unfortunately I am back in Pa where we just got 3 inches of snow. 9 months and counting till I am back in Captiva. Thank you so much for sharing these videos. I really look forward to them! Saw that there were some storms in SW FL this weekend. Will make for some good shelling for your next video.
