I was going to buy a Tacoma, as I have a 4Runner. I went to test drive the Ranger just to check one out. The salesman had me take it off road, on a pretty good trail. I was very nervous, but the Ranger did so awesome on it, totally blew me away. I bought the Ranger.
I went to test drive the Tacoma but doesn't work out at all for me being 6'4" but the Ranger was perfect and more powerful and more comfortable all around.
elitemav I’m the same height as you. I test drove both and I ended up buying the Ranger. It had more room, more power, more off road options (FX4), better gas mileage, more towing capacity and just as good off road. I’ll be adding a 3.5” lift with 33s for the trail. With the locker, it’s more capable than the Tacoma in all categories.
@@steved1880 Yeah it makes the Tacoma look pretty dated I think most of the mid size trucks are going to have to come up with something new to compete since in my opinion the Ranger is now the best Mid size truck you can buy. We have 4 at my work with over 100k miles and they still run like new with no issues whatsoever and they have been driven off road every single day and nights as well.
TFL Truck would have been scared to take a 2 door Rubicon on 35s down this trail. Excellent video. It’s nice to see some actual off-roading in a video like this. Keep up the good work!
This truck has been on sale for many years in other countries in the same body style. I have a 2012. These have an amazing reputation in the international markets for being great offroad 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Stage 3 Motorsports Just going to put some exterior mods on it for now. It’s a lease so I don’t want to void my warranty or anything. Going to toss a bull bar, fender flares on it and the roll bars for the bed of the truck.
Been to Broken Arrow on those Jeep tours and know how brutal that trail is, and after watching this, you really peaked my interest in this vehicle. Thanks for keeping it stock for this test. Real world imho. 👍😎
I'm getting one of these bad boys soon. Order is placed and this video is getting me so jazzed up. I've my camp in the Adirondacks in NY. It's some real tough road and the bit at like 13:45 really made me feel confident about this truck with that!
I as well. I was thinking of getting a BDS lift kit for it (when they put it out) but after this I'm starting to wonder if just a bigger set of tires would do the job well enough. But I always would rather be safe than sorry!
Best video I’ve seen so far about the ranger, most reviews are of lariat it’s nice seeing someone review an xlt Fx4...this setup is the exact one I want I can’t wait till I get mine ☺️
Everything I’ve seen about this new Ranger so far it seems to be a very capable little truck! Definitely living up to its namesake. The old Rangers were great!
Agreed. Bought the latest Wildtrak, no mods (except for a light bar and a good set of all terrain tyres) and it goes anywhere with ease. Best 4x4 I have ever owned or driven.
Great video! Glad to see you guys test it out stock first. I can say after adding a 2.5” level and 32” ties my ranger does great off road and the extra clearance from the mods is definitely needed. Can’t wait to see future videos!
Just got my 2020 STX Ranger with the off-road package. Looking forward to getting it ready for the trail with an overland build. 1st timer and so excited to get into this with my 2 teenage sons! awesome review.
Been watching all the Ranger reviews. Seems like it doesn't really excel at one particular thing but does many things well. Kinda like the Swiss Army knife of mid- size trucks.
lol I have a 2019 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and 2019 Ford Ranger XLT myself ...cool bones....the Ranger features the "Trail Control mode" which is like a "cruise Control" for slow rock crawling...I used it the other day it works amazing !!!!!
Wahoooo I took that train in the Pink Jeep tour -- wend down that terrifying staircase of rocks and thought the jeep was going to roll end over end down that 30% incline. Wow - never thought a stock Ranger could do that. I just put in an order for a 2024 Ranger... The grab handles are back!
Love seeing anything other than overbuilt jeeps on 35's. I take my 87 Samurai with 28's on this trail pretty often. Getting down the staircase isn't as bad as you might think it would be. Great video. Thanks for sharing.
Now after you change all the suspension and wheels and tires and whatever else you do. You have to make sure you do the same trail in the same conditions to be able to get a fair comparison.
Doing broken arrow on Sunday with a stock 4x4 1998 yukon. This makes me more confident. Good video dude! Good to see the new Ranger flexing its muscles also!
Thank you for mentioning the drivers side grab handle. Extremely useful and they seem to be absent from all midsize trucks (Gladiator has one). Early promos for the Ranger and I gave Ford a lot of props on that, only to find they didn’t install the. It’s important enough that I bought a 14’ part number to add one to my Tundra ($180).
Props for doing Devil’s Staircase. I didn’t want to do that in my stock Tacoma. Rock sliders are a must after rims/tires and a coilover lift. That is what I modded first and did pretty well on the backroad to Crown King.
I think Ranger will be a solid little truck. I test drive a crew cab model, back seat is too little for me at 6’2”, I’d probably get extended cab with longer bed. I like.
Have a new Ranger Lariat FX4 that should be here 4/27/19. Really looking forward to see your improvements. Hopefully exhaust improvements and chip tuner. Keep up the great work!
Decent test of this truck stock! I was close to buying a Colorado, but the FX4 XLT Crew caught me after a test drive. I am in Alaska on the snow mostly, have to keep it in 4 high for take offs, but man this truck is amazing. Thanks for making this video!
I just bought one of these a few weeks ago same as that one but in black . I can't wait to see what you guys come up with for this truck . So far I'm really happy with it but seeing this review made decision to go with a ranger that much better
Noah Stage 3 Also purchased one in black, waiting from the factory! Mine’s an XL, but I loaded it up from there because I don’t need all the extra bells and whistles!
One of the best off road review I’ve seen yet for the Ranger, I’ve been itching to get my 2019 out and about on the mountain trails in western Maryland and West Virginia. It would have been interesting to see the trail management system operate coming down that 20-30% incline and see how the ranger works with that system. I dont plan on using it but been looking to see how/if it works.
Thank you for another great video. Your videos are honest and I look forward to more. My factory ordered Ranger is suppose to be here April 21st. I am looking forward to it now a little bit more after watching this. Thank you again.
Somtimes a Bad idea driving over a log or big stick. Seen people do that with bash plates and guards underneath and still ended up tearing something up. Great video and word of the ranger! Awesome job guys
Very surprised how well it did on the trail. Strangely here in the UK we get grab handles on the A pillars as standard. Mind you, we are stuck with 3.2 diesels which I would trade any day for that nice 2.3 petrol you get, although we do get a choice of 6 speed manual or 10 speed auto!
Looking forward to seeing your lift on it, I’m in the uk and have a white wildtrak version diesel 3.2 and will be lifting my own by 3 inches for my off-road days in Scotland, great video guys
ICEBERG News hi mate my diesel is a 2017 3.2 inline 5 around the streets stop starting I achieve 24/27mpg my ranger is manual which will edge the auto but on a run with cruise control 70mph it’ll easily give me around 34mpg this is carrying 4 people and quite a bit in the tray
I just came across this review after purchasing a Ranger XLT with 6" Lift and Wheel swap. Great video of what it can do stock. I would like to see some aftermarket skid plates.
Love this video. This is exactly what I wanted to see. I’m seriously debating on getting one of these trucks instead of an f150. I don’t really need a truck for towing or anything but having a smaller truck is always good for hauling. I never even thought about off-roading it but wanted a 4x4 for getting to my parents house on snow covered roads. This completely opens my mind to the idea of going off-roading just for the hell of it. I can already see the mods I would do to give it a bit of a lift and a little bit of a second kind of cool makeover. (First cool is functionality, second cool is just for aesthetics or just for hell of it kinda stuff). Such an awesome truck. Probably wait and compare it to gen 2 and make a decision there but damn it’s a nice truck for sure.
Man, what a well produced video! You guys put some professional automotive journalist to shame! Well done!! I’m thinking of getting a Ranger, I’ll make sure to hit y’all up for mods!
Glad I found your channel and specifically this video....I am looking to purchase a 2021 Ranger...new to off road coming from road racing (enthusiast HPDE track days)...I will be foloowing this build...Great video...
The reviews on this truck are all over the place. Some reviewers hate it and some love it. Especially off road ones. I have no idea what to think about it at this point.
Thanks for this! It's time I roll out of my '97 Tacoma. I like Toyotas but they still have rear drum breaks. My first-gen has the 3.4L in it. It has been bulletproof. 289K and still doing well. It gets V8 milage and so I had been looking at F-150s with FX4 but the places I usually go and narrow trails to hunt hogs and go fishing in remote lakes in wildlife management areas. My truck got so scarred by brush that I eventually prepped it like I was taking into a paint booth, but then I realized that a two-part system would have polluted my neighborhood as I was going to have to paint it outside. So I went crazy-old-man on the thing and used Rustoleum rattle cans of bed liner on it. It turned out great... the stuff cures in 72 hours. Nice. Anyway, the RANGER FX4 is really good... like you, I would need to get up a little bit but otherwise, I think this is where I'm going. Thanks again.
My first truck was a 99 ranger, 4x4 5 speed manual, it always surprised me how capable it was. I only broke it once by jumping it over a rail road crossing. The rear passenger shackle was toasted.
For that trail you need the European 3.2 diesel. It will probably give you better engine breaking. I'm pretty happy with my ranger wildtrak 3.2 turbo diesel
I still have my 1993 Ranger laying around with a 2.3. It has 99 HP LOL! I’m really liking this 2019 model. I think I paid 10g back in 1993. Long way from 40g of today’s money. My times have changed
I've done this trail 3 times in my life. In a stock TJ sport. In a 2 inch lift 97 k2500 burb. In a 97 rav4. Yes, seriously. With the manual you get a center locker for true 4wd and mine had the optional torsen rear. Clutch hated it, but we did it. granted I didn't do the whole trail, but to submarine rock and back.
I have watched a bunch of different videos on the new Ranger , and so far they seem like great little trucks . But I haven't seen anything that would make me get rid of my 2003 Ranger and buy a new one . Especially since mine is relatively low mileage and has the best engine they ever put in a ranger .
EXCELLENT VIDEO. You COVERED TIRES,(which i have hankook dynapro at-m's) on my 2022 ranger fx 4 lariat. I FIND that loose rocks tends to make the rear tire spin. THE SUSPENSION also (on my ranger) is a bit soft, i guess FORD want to have a balance between soft and hard for off roading. RAISING the RIDE HEIGHT might help clearance issues but, i'm not really an off-road enthusiast but, i think you make good sense. NICE REVIEW.
Thank you for this. The camera work was really good, perspectives were excellent. The truck performance was good for as you stated, off the show room floor. I wondered why you didn't use the terrain management going down the steep stairs? It is supposed to act like off road cruise control. I suspect the Ranger Raptor will be available to the US market soon at least I think that will happen, after all Ford wants to make sales and that will sell, quite well I should think. Thanks again.
This is a really great video. The rangers you have there look very different from the ones we get in Africa. On these trails a Ranger Wildtrak would ace those challenges.
I was going to buy a Tacoma, as I have a 4Runner. I went to test drive the Ranger just to check one out. The salesman had me take it off road, on a pretty good trail. I was very nervous, but the Ranger did so awesome on it, totally blew me away. I bought the Ranger.
I'd have to say the ranger starting off will out due the Tacoma but the look on the Tacoma is more of an aggressive attitude.
Plus you got some real power. 2.3 turbo is great.

Very nice. The Fx4 seems pretty capable. Nice to see the skid plates doing their job.

Enjoyed the video, great job,,, I am looking at Rangers,so thank you for the information 👍👍
No problem Alan these are great vehicles to own, check out our full build series for ideas on what you could do.
Ran broken arrow today did very well 32 and a 3.5 lift and yes we did the steps and i did lift a wheel a few times.
Sounds like a good run Mike!
@@stage3motorsports haven't been on that trail in 10 yr. In town on vacation and was the first thing we did .
@@mikeleggiero2524 That's awesome, have fun on your trip!
@@stage3motorsports was at your shop today wanted a stage 3 decal for my truck looks like i need to get one on line.
Thanks for the awesome review! Great work on all aspects of your review.
Thanks Chris, hit subscribe and stay tuned for all this Ranger has in store!
I have watched a bunch of different videos on the new Ranger , and so far they seem like great little trucks . But I haven't seen anything that would make me get rid of my 2003 Ranger and buy a new one . Especially since mine is relatively low mileage and has the best engine they ever put in a ranger .
The classics can sometimes be the best!
Let's hope someone or even Ford comes out with a front camera.
There’s lots of things we’re hoping for with this truck
F-150 Raptor has had one since 2011
Subscribed. About time a good review with Ranger. 👍👍👍👍
Great video! Shared! Keep it up guys!
Awesome video! White is such a great color for the Ranger. I wish we had the US spec here in Germany.
This is a awesome risky but very awesome review appreciate this and especially how honest and to the point the bid is thank you! 🤙
Great truck, just bought one, a black one, great video!
Thanks Roland, hit subscribe and stay tuned to see what we can do with it!
If the fx4 does well here then I’m going to take my Tremor ranger with no hesitation. I’ve been curious about broken arrow for a while.
Will a stock tacoma trd offroad with a locker make it? I think you guys took some bypasses or didn't do obstacles that alot of people do.
