Who gets the parts you guys use once? Or do they go into a giant warehouse for later shows??
@@daveb3505 Hi Dave, It really depends on the part, the build, or the show. Often times, they are sold with the project vehicle or engine they were a part of. Sometimes they're reused for different projects. It can vary from build to build and part to part.
No nonsensical bullshit about "automotive artifacts" and "engine archaeology" strange...
if you guys ever want to open another store with the same great standards i would be happy to be you goto guy ...i am a lover of old fords and have been wrenching for over 30 yrs and would love a break in life dowing what i realy love great story from you tyvm
sorry about the type-o's new keyboard and little different in size lol
Basic porting and gasket-matching, and a how-to guide on making the most of a carburetor would be interesting. This went from "budget" to "how to use stock rods and not damage expensive parts" build.
I agree, show the benefits of a good modern carburetor, factory D0VE heads with 3angle valve job, gasket port matching heads and intake, port and polish and upgrade to duraspark distributor with chevy HEI module.
@@hachirokami Absolutely! And budget-friendly approach.
You guys bitch about everything. Each episode was a more progressive performance build. Morons
You can definitely tell Trick Flow sponsored this build....
There are better ways to build big power in a 460 that don't require throwing your entire purse at it.
And the intake for 3300-8000 RPMS. I didn't realize they were building a race engine. Daily driver runs 1000-3500 occasionally seeing 4-5000. I guess they never said what the engine was for. I was hoping for nice streetable package before they went ape shit and threw the bank at it.
This is "big power"?
Sure it is. In the Fordtard universe.
Did you fools miss the first build episode? That was the daily driver build.
@@captainswampy9501imagine this engine, in say a 73 Thunderbird like mine, C6 trans, and 3.73 or 4.11s in the rear end would easily see that RPM range. Maybe not all the time, but one good long pull from a stop sign would see those rpms
remember when 1/2 hour shows were 26 mins without commercials, then 24, then 21, now 17, and the whole episode is a commercial.
i stopped watching when the E3 advert started, which was near the beginning
They sell E3's for lawn mowers too. More often than not just putting a Champion or NGK plug in solves the customer's problems.
I use one step "colder" NGK Platinum plugs and they are the felines undergarments, er, cats pyjamas. 😂👌
@@rhubarbpie2027 - 😂
It was 3am when one of these videos caught my eye. It's now 3:40am and I can't stop watching!!!
Be sure to use a hardened oil pump drive shaft. I didn't and it left me stranded on the road once. The drive comes from the distributor which is turned by the cam. An aftermarket pump needs more power and the stock shaft is not up to the task.
Jack Flash the pump came with a new shaft.
Plus you have to make sure the distributor has a bigger roll pin in it so it doesn't share a solid roll pin or hardened roll pin I used to use drill drill bit made into roll pin
It's a "parts store replacement".
At 00:36 ... DON'T DO THAT !!! ... Put plastic tubing over the rod bolts to prevent scratching the crank with the threads !!!
How not to degree the cam.
Way to go.
Lots of guys that are hardcore enough to rebuilt an engine have some 3/8" fuel line laying around. It a easy enough to cut off two 2" pieces and saves a ton of heartache later
These guys are clowns, lol
That cam was ringing like the liberty bell as Joe installed it!
Cringe worthy for sure, dude should have put some white lithium on it...
Joe stands around with his hands on his hips more than installing cams.
The junkyard LS Guys say that the cam bearings are always okey as long as You don't look at them!

I sure as heck miss Horsepower TV... 😿

I like the carb kit. That was pretty neat
Hey thats an awesome product for the carburetor jets! I never knew about it. So much more convenient and the adjustability to fine tune with more granularity. Now I dont hate carbs as much anymore.
This is awesome , Thanks you guys .... keep em coming . I love the Big Block Fords ...
I am a firm believer in E3 plugs. They seem to start quicker and power is up. My 2.2 Chevy loves em.
I wished for more than 5 min for the 460
It's a token Ford episode , and now back to how great a chebby on da cheap is ...
Joe obviously doesn't care about nicking cam bearings lol. Like he was being timed for removal and install to win a bet.
Or crank journals... see 00:36
Lol I thought he was trying to kill a snake up in there😅🤣💥..
Small nicks help with lubrications.
@@markr831 Like little oil passages LMAO
Great way to start the morning
The spark plugs test : less NOX is maybe caused by simply having a colder spark plug.
You need to test same ranges of plugs to really tell.
Joe was a good host.
I was cringing with the way he was pulling and installing cams as well as when he was installing pistons without protecting the crank from scarring by the rod cap studs. Maybe I’m just too careful with every one I do. Or not.
Your not to picky Joe isnt spending his hard earned money like we are
The motor only needs to last long enough to break in the cam and do a couple dyno runs, then it's probably going to get either stuffed on a shelf for the next decade, or disassembled and the loaned parts handed back to Trick Flow.
When u get nothing but free bolt on crap u can nick cranks all day
Y’all are right. We spend the money we work hard for on this stuff so when we build engines, we want them clean, oil clearances within spec, nothing out of round, etc so it’s an engine that will last. Good to know others think like I do anymore.
Or at least rubber fuel line
Man I miss watching John Elmore on tv every weekend. Rip buddy
385 hp and 493 fr lbs on a smog block, not bad with a mild comp replacement cam and open chamber heads
for a baseline a stock 69-71 460 was rated at a gross 365 hp and 500 ft lbs.
Those were great numbers with the cast iron heads and a warmed over stock short block. Similar to the stock numbers from the golden era of 1969 to 1971. This 460 would pull at least as good as the old Thunder Jet 429 engines back then which was kind of a detuned 429 Cobra Jet.
great point of reference.
This one is lower rated, came out of a 78 model truck so closer to like 200-220 horse factory.
@@79dent correct. about 8:1 and 78cc in the heads.
@@socalltd closer to 88 cc on a 460. You'd need just about a dome piston to get that compression back up
Even though the gas mileage sucks on these engines the 460 is a legendary engine it's a workhorse.
I’ve only watched two videos and I’m already in love with your videos!!! I’m going to completely rebuild an old 302 Ford that’s bored .30 over stock so, 4.30 and this helps a lot!!!
If it's bored thirty over, it's 4.030, not 4.30.
7:01 An exhaust flow meter measures exhaust flow?! *MY MIND IS BLOWN*
I put E3 plugs in my 5.4L Triton Ford truck, it tore those things up in 3 weeks, some of the diamond hoops were either missing, or heavily burned and covered in carbon
5.4s are known to eat plugs
@@jacobmullins3644 same deal with my 460
when it comes to Big Blocks I got to say for did it right especially with the 385 series blocks
all those new trickflow parts make 607hp
Animation on the supercharger screws @5:45 are spinning backwards. nothing like a blower sucking air out of your motor hahah
As far as I know, the direction displayed is actually the correct way. The air flows on the outside and is then compressed in the intake. When the screws interlock, at the bottom middle there is no space for the air and it simply has to go into the engine.
@@cedricl.marquard6273 Not on that specific roots style blower. It sucks air from the middle top and sends it straight down into the intake.
I remember well honest charlie and loved his ad magazine, I kept one folded in my back pocket for years. I like that one screw tuning!! A first for me to like the ads ans well as the build and I am a ford man. I am impressed with the stuff you can do with the 460!! I lost more no., 8 pistons than anyone white man should endure so will follow this build
Ok all of this is great! Have you checked milage on the bigger building for a daily driver, compared to a stock build? If it's breathing better it should get better milage!
I did this with a 302 and went from 14 mpg hwy to 19 carrying 3000 Pounds in the bed with a cover from ND to Washington State.
Month of May, still some colder weather at night yet warm during day.
Me and buddy bought a set of those E3s back in the day. 3 of 4 died at once in his car just weeks after install. I swapped mine out before that happened to me too 😂😂
"Where do the big ones and little ones go?"
Man, I love that game.
Love this they gotta do a honest Charlie factory for 63 and 64 impalas
5:25 the first time I heard about a crankshaft scraper. I couldn’t believe a legitimate engine builder would touch one.
they are used in race engines, dingus. And you know more than race engine builders, right 😂
@@TheRoadhammer379 Show me one race engine with a crankshaft scraper. PowerNation get paid to push bs parts to people like you who don't know any better.
That Percy peice is pure genius
That engine would look nice in my ranger 😈
Should of put Kaase heads and intake too, would of made 700-800hp I gave this video a 👍 for the FORD stuff
all those new trickflow parts make 607hp
Big Sean247 still not bad and probly half the money of the Kaase set up..
@@donalderdbrink647 yes i agree that its good for the parts and cost
Now with the 8:1
“Bosses so we can add nitrous later on”, ha ha gotta love the thinking ahead.
Cast pistons and nitrous not a good idea
i tried the e3 plugs paying 3x the price! my motor ran like shit!. put a $2 plug and ran perfect. . i will never buy a upgraded/special plugs. keep it simple
I just spray some WD-40 on mine and they good as new. Been using the stock plugs on my 95 Astro Van no issues at all
The E3 are crap Chinesse plugs that shroud the spark.
Dont buy E3 there garbage I tried them on my Silverado High Country 6.2L all I'm going to say they were a nightmare and its ran terrible stick with factory folks.
Gap the darn things properly and be in the right heat range and $0.99 "normal" plugs will run as well as anything else.
My lawnmower won't run on E3.
so a trick flow sponsored episode!
Honestly, I'm 52 and never heard of Charley except the one the Stooges are always looking for^__^ Honestly, I just went and spent ten minutes to look and dropped a load in my draws at the high prices and low selection at least what I was looking for! You want S/BBC at high price your set!
Thank God for this channel
you guys only get better ,,, and such interesting engine picks
It's a BBF you make it sound like it's a Packard motor or something. lol
Those e3 spark plugs seem like a modified torque master plug. Not convinced that shielding more of the spark compared to a conventional plug will have benefits.
They are BS.. if you look on amazon, most if not all the E3's I glanced at had people complaining about major problems with them causing misses.
They are junk
When you have builders installing shims under standard plugs to orient the ground electrode so as to not shroud the spark... why the hork would you install a plug that shrouds the spark several times over?
@@mfree80286 that was my thought to. Plus most of my plugs dont have that much gap as what an e3 appears to have and it doesnt exactly look like it would be easy to regap that plug if at all.
@@mfree80286 its called indexing the plug. which is only making sure the open side of the plug faces the fuel in the chamber
9:39 I have that same 63 Ford Fairlane 500 in the background!!
I bet it dont roll coal like my badboy 63 tho! :)
6:56 the exhaust flow meter measures the exhaust flow. Next he'll be telling us the muffler muffles and the intake takes in.
Awesome alright bro. The old 460s growl mean
Love that intake guys
The only thing a girdle does on a bbf is stop the parts from damage and in place it doesn't stop the webbing from letting go
it's like back in the early 90's all the guys putting 460s in fox bodies & nos
so only 5 minutes was about a 460 build? boo
Yeah I kinda thought that sucked too. I think I'm done with them.
For what it's worth these were produced in 2009 for television with segments so often then you'd work on a certain project for 2 segments and another project for 2 segments or sometimes 3 segments to 1 depending on what work we're doing and what makes sense workflow at the time.
fair enough, thanks for the reply. Was hoping it would be atleast half the episode tho, seems this episode took a left turn a bit early is all 🤣
PowerNation; if this stuff is from 2009, why not cut all the clips together and make one complete video about the 460? I think that would make more sense...
2009 was when lots of people didn’t have cable... I tuned in every Sunday back then..... Spike Tv or TNN?
While its not in this episode but the prior one, its nice to see them finally use a torque plate when boring out a block.
You don't use a torque plate "boring out a block". It's used when finish-honing and is only "recommended" for "high performance" POS "thin-wall casting" blocks with 4 head bolts per cylinder "bored out to the max". Meaning all Ford "high performance" OHV V8s.
@@deeremeyer1749Ah, that must be why torque plates are always used on Chevy Gen One engines with 5 bolts per cylinder :) Boring out the block does all the work, finish honing merely leaves a surface for the oil film, and if you want ring seal to last beyond 10,000 miles, professionals use a torque plate. The only time a torque plate is ever skipped on a real engine build is when the engine design bolts the head into the block's walls, like Pontiac blocks. Otherwise, when the head bolts go into the deck, you torque plate to replicate the distortion to the bore.
@@deeremeyer1749 you were dropped on your head as a child, ignorant dbag.
I want MOAR!
Ya moaron
the only thing they don't tell you about the E3 plugs is that they promote detonation because the increased mass of the enlarged side electrode acts as a heat soak, and runs the electrode hotter for the same heat range of plug. that's where the improvements come on the computer, but if you drive up in the low mountains on a hot humid day, the motor will ping like a popcorn maker under high load, low throttle lugging. so when you reduce your timing advance to compensate, those so called improvements are out the window. just stick to OEM style resistor plugs and change them every 12k if it's a driver. they have been trying to sell goofy spark plugs since day one, and they never catch on. for a reason.
I took my 76 Chevy Camaro in for a tune up and the shop I chose installed these cheap ass Chinese plugs that were just horrible. I drove it home and it was running worse than it did before the tune up. I went straight back and we narrowed it down to the plugs. I watched as they pulled them out and was floored when I saw them. I told them to go to the AutoZone and get a set of E-3's and HOLY SHIT did it make a huge difference. Now, I run them in every engine I own, from the cars to the lawn mower to my chain saw.
Joe Elmore, when I hear that voice I think Horsepower TV!
Honest Charlie putting out the cash register in the street today would be a cash register gone before you could turn on the OPEN sign.
What an awesome video. This makes me want to rebuild my 460.
Amazing how they made that old motor run ...you don't need 10 000 dollars to have fun ... yaaaaay!!!!!
Should have went with double four barrel carbs. Stock heads were fine. Those aluminum heads are no budget build. Roller rockers are only a good idea if it is an increase in ratio over stock.
You must have missed were he showed the stock heads had cracks around the valves.. they weren't fine at all. Now if they didnt have cracks all over sure they would have but who would use them when they could toss on a nice set of trickflows and get more out of them not to mention later on when more power is added.
man you gotta re line hone the thing to properly install that main stud girdle
I wonder how long them cam bearings would last in an actual vehicle.
They almost definitely damaged the surface of those cam bearings.
Ka-dink, ka-dink, ka-dink....
@@AZCobraman I feel bad for the shmuck that gets this engine.
@@tylerhensley2312
Load on the timming chain increases with RPM.
At low RPM load is minimal. At the far end of the RPM range load is at a maximum and valves can float.
@@norman_sage2528 yes everything you just said is true. But can only be true if there is load against the cam.

would love to see the difference between the two intakes after the change of every thing else just to see what is the difference stock heads change rockers then change heads the different rockers and the comparison of the two intakes just to see what the difference of every thing
I'm still skeptical those spark plugs make that much of a difference.
In theory I can believe it, more reliable spark and less chances of misfires and a more complete burn can make a good sizable difference
Nice
I use E3s in my power sports engines.
But I can’t see using them in our vehicles. My parents have a lot of cars and trucks so does my family and I can’t see a good reason to buy E3 over say an NGK or Champion: especially when the E3s are like $7 more per plug.
I had to remove my E3 plugs from my 07 mustang gt. It wasn't running right , I only had them for 2 months.
They are garbage stick with factory plugs folks
E3 spark plugs are junk they're going to run for the good couple hundred miles after that you're done the whole point of running a spark plug is it keeps itself burning clean now with Platinum plugs plugs that's the way to go and if you have four valves cylinder head that's where you can run a Bosch four type plug which l have have done on many vehicles with excellent results gas mileage and Power plug I put a hundred thousand on them with no problem got! to have the right heat range
Could you guys pull and install the cams a little Rafferty please. I don't think you put enough nicks in the bearings.
Thanks mr joe go ford 💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾💪🏾
Old and cast iron is good, but there is nothing like aluminum heads
I'm just curious is there a really popular motorcycle repair channel on TH-cam
Why did you show a comparison between the stock exhaust port and the trick flow lntake port ?
Splitfires of the 21st century !
Good job I like so much 👍
Something funky going on Ford's have distributors in the front of motor and both radiator hose are also in the front mainfold on backwards?
Brought to you by trickflow.
I know nobody's perfect, but that oil pump is cast iron...not cnc machined anything.
How it’s machined has nothing to do with the base material being cast, forged or billet.
I like using e3 plugs but the one problem I have is they don't make shorty plugs cause I have to have shorty plugs because of my clearance
oops comparing factory exhaust ports with the trickflow INTAKE port didnt really make sense.
you noticed too, think their hiding something? Idiots! And this episode is 15 years old. Kasse heads probably didnt exist then, at least the ford 4piggy went on a diet.
Haha .. That 460 build sounds bad ass !
If Ford had been smarter back in the 80s they would've made engines like the 460 multivalve and supercharged. That's the simplest way for these older engines to get higher horsepower and torque while still meeting emission standards. It's more costly but it would get better performance either way.
Add nitrous with stock replacement cast pistons, reman rods and a cast crank? What could go wrong?
A Kaase cam but no P-51 or his hemi Ford heads?
This episode is from 2009 horsepower said I'll bet them Kasse heads went budget friendly back than . Not that they are now
I’ll be waiting 🤔😆😆 you guys rock 🤘✌️👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
They let anyone hawk their snake oil goods if they pay up.
Lol don't let that interfere with your free entertainment
You only won't to use Motorcraft plugs for a ford engine just different cold ranges
please do a Mopar build. Please do not do any more LS build up so I'm so sick of seeing the LS puke! Do please do a 3rd gen Hemi or small block or big block Mopar. Another good idea is a slant six with a turbo mileage and performance thank you.
You can take a 427 LS motor which is Big cubic inches and it is not a big block
they have 454 small blocks and 468 when its stroked to max for a small block
