NYU Steinhardt Jazz Interview Series with Dr. David Schroeder interviews legendary flutist, recording artist and bandleader Hubert Laws. December 3 , 2016
What a talented, talented family -- love Hubert (Chicago Theme), Ronnie (Friends & Strangers, Every Generation, Pressure Sensitive, Always There), Debra, and Eloise. 'Chicago Theme' was the first thing I heard from Hubert, and was sold from that point. #makinghoustonproud
The bassoon player in the "Australian Jazz Quartet" was Errol Buddle, who was mainly a tenor saxophone player. He also played oboe. That group was led by Jack Brokensha, who played the vibes, and they were based in both Windsor, Ontario and Detroit. I lived in Australia 1954-1971 and I remember Errol very well.
He's genius. Technically the best flute player in jazz. Back then, he dropped the tenor sax to focus on the flute. Good decision because it opens up a career in classical music too. Everybody is playing saxophone ...
At one point Hubert mentions Herbie Mann only parenthetically. I wish he had expanded on that and talked about Mann's style vis-a-vis his own.
Best jazz flute player I ever heard, and there have been many good ones.
Somehow I expected Hubert to be a humble, kind and wise man. Not disappointed. His musical achievements speak for themselves.
Thanks for being such inspiration Hubert ! Eternally grateful
excellent
I still remember when as a kid I first heard Hubert play, it was in "Gone" from the George Benson's live at Carnegie Hall: IT BLEW MY MIND!!!!
