Get in shape, like pursue it in an actual and disciplined manner. Join a CrossFit gym, or something where you’re not just wasting time working out, but actively training. Going into this job, your level of fitness says a lot about you as an individual and your work ethic. Read John Maclean’s Fire books, fire on the mountain is a good start, check out the Smokey generation and it’s collection of videos, and just work towards it daily. Toss your resume in when the application period opens, be stoked to work hard, and more importantly be stoked to learn. Anyone can swing a tool, not everyone can maintain a good attitude while swinging a tool in adverse conditions for hours on end. The attitude, work ethic, and personality are huge. Call around, introduce yourself to different crews and stop by in person, bring in a resume and realize people respond well to someone that’s stoked, and is actively putting in a ton of effort. You’ll get picked up, and depending on where and what agency you like, you’ll go far if you can maintain that stoke factor. Work ethic is huge. My big tip is to do it, don’t think about it and wait, commit, put yourself out there and get experience and make it happen
*Edit* Didn't see you were 13 dude; you got some years to go. Check out and see if your school or any community college's nearby have a fire explorer program you can get into while you're still under 18. Looks very good on a resume and you get to learn. You can join a handcrew as you turn 18, and since you're already into fire, just use the next couple years to become a stud physically. Take school seriously, take your grades seriously, learn as much as you can, and be productive. See if there's anything nearby you can do manual labor type work, any family friends or anything that need help landscaping, or really anything. Those are all good routes, as the job you want to do is going to be very physical; and if you come into your first season at 18 and are super strong and fit, it's a huge respect thing. You got some years man, so enjoy being a teenager, it goes quick, make good decisions, treat your body well and don't get into bad stuff, and keep your eye on the prize. Lots of dudes work the summer months on a shot crew, and go to school during the off season, that's always an option, but just commit yourself there amigo; I hope to see you out on the line in a couple years.
Check out the "characteristics of an ideal hotshot" on here. This are good characteristics to have for any job or any situation, this is what it means to be a good student, a good firefighter, a good anything really, that's the fun part about fire, you learn to work around people and be confident and take pride in what you do. thesmokeygeneration.com/view-stories-by-person/adam-hernandez/

Thanks again friend and we will see you when the smoke clears.

Hello Steve Austin, Thanks for viewing our video and for the comment, the thought of Apache music did cross our minds but we would have to get approval and respect the music that some Apache songs might be traditional for ceremonies. Hopefully we can find some music in the future to add on with approval with that said you can message us if you have any ideas, we’re always open minded and take the feedback from everyone. Take care friend and we will see you soon.
