I toast this man on every Christmas meal since his passing. He has brightened my, my two brothers’, sister’s life so much. To this day we recite/throw young ones dialogue at each other.
One of the most impressive things about this is how quickly he goes from Rick to Rik. It takes about a millisecond and he's a completely different person. Rik's characters are similar in that they all tend to be prats, but he isn't playing himself. He is one of those rare actors that can actually become a different person. Rik Mayall can act better than most people in Hollywood.
Well I wouldn't know as all o saw him in were sterocast prat roles Rik filthy Rick and catflap and bottom. He also played a similar role in movie right said Fred. I think I saw him in an episode of Sherlock Holmes and werewolf in London which was only a minor role. These candid interviews may show him more serious but he still played cnuts
I just learned the sad news on Yahoo today. I for one will miss this great comedian. Every video I saw of him was pure comedic gold. Here's to you Rik Mayall, you will be greatly missed. RIK MAYALL RULES!
i met him a couple of years ago at Milton Keynes theatre, during The New Statesman live tour... he came out, told his taxi to wait, and spent 20 mins chatting. really friendly, a genuinly top man.
It's great to see the outpouring of love there's been for Rik across the news and all social media. I haven't heard a bad word said about him and rightly so. It's only now he's passed that people are really appreciating what a legend and vital contributor to English comedy he really was. I loved him. Please help get Noble England to No 1!
He's so cute at the beginning with his "Wick" character from TYO, and then he's actually REALLY cute as himself being shy and nervous 💖 I like how the switchover from being loud and nasty to professional and deferential happens so quickly.
Maybe there is one born every generation, a comedy genius out of nowhere. Spike Milligan, John Cleese (who is thankfully still with us), Rick, super comedy geniuses that just spring out of nowhere and seem to make us laugh no matter what they do.
Well done Mr. Mayall and co. You guys did succeed in creating a show that transcends age and other nonsense. You just needed to wait for the ones who loved your show to grow up. It's a special thing to have done something a once-teen is willing to introduce to their teen 20+ years later.
Not a good day today, not good at all! The People's Poet is dead, ( I wonder if it was the laxative pills ), farewell Rik, thanks for brightening up mine and so many other people's world!
@@gentillygirl545 in an episode of 'the young ones' as he is doing the 'peoples poet' shtick he takes an overdose of pills, and mike goes on to tell him they aren't what he thinks they are, but laxatives. hope that helps.
Thank you rik. I remember staying up on a Sunday to watch the young ones on MTV (✌). Or recording to watch after school. What a blast. Thank you for the video.
I remember the first episode, played late at night here in New Zealand. I just walked in, stoned off my face and saw the Young ones on tv and virtually pissed myself laughing. The funniest thing I had ever seen.
Oh Rik Mayall (and he came from Bromsgrove and had a Brummie accent, just like me!) I remember being a very young child in th early 80s and in the playground everyone was like "have you watched the Young Ones?" At that age I didn't get all the jokes, especially Neil and the flower pot, but I and my younger sister loved it, and we recorded it on VHS tape and wore it out with the amount of times we watched it! I'm pleased to say my 15 year old daughter finds it equally as funny, and can't wait to be a student (and it was filmed in Bristol where I was a student!) so she can live the Young Ones life too. It's amazing. RIP Rik - you were a one off.
I've met Rik and I can tell anyone who hasn't met him that he was exactly the same off screen as he was on. He took the Micky out of me and it was 2 days after thatcher died and he told me he hoped they burnt the witch in the street 😂
This is his Young Ones character in FULL form. So many awesome memories of watching this show with friends and DYING laughing when watching interactions between Rick(Geek, Anarchist, Genius) and Vivian(Homicidal, Punk Rocker, Car Enthusiast).
Terry Wogan's face... You can almost tell what he's thinking. "Smile, laugh, try not to offend him but maintain your negative opinion on him." Rick FTW!
English accent. There's no such thing as a British accent becasue Britain isn't a country. It's the name of the Island which holds three separate countries.
I remember in the mid '80s. The whole 'alternative' crowd were so popular; it crossed over into the mainstream. I remember watching the first Comic Relief live show in spring 1986. Loads of great comedy names, plus Kate Bush, Cliff etc. It still remains a high point, 'Woodstock' show of the new wave of comedy. Rik was probably the greatest of them all.
i came THIS close to meeting him once and i missed out, i kick myself everyday for that because Rik Mayall is a legend, and not just because i think he is awesome, but just because he's so god damn funny!
Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Sadly missed and one of the best British comedians of all time. Can't help thinking that he reminds me of stewey from family guy.... Only better!!!!! Miss you Rik, gods speed!
Only found out who Rik Mayall was a few weeks ago and he's already my favourite comedian! I watched the entire collection of Black Adder and didn't realise that he was in it, can't believe how stupid I was..
This was the first time I heard him talk not in-character as anyone... his voice a lot different to how I'd expected it to be! He's so adorable though. I'd never laughed at a stand-up routine in my life before I found some of his stuff as Rick.
When they are talking about students, I can remember when I was a bus driver and very early one morning, I had just a few passengers on and didn't notice someone putting their hand out to halt me at a stop until I was already passing them by and in UK, we are not allowed to pull up just anywhere, so I had to leave them behind. One passenger called down in consolation to me "It doesn't matter, it was only a student - and they don't count". I thought back to my own times as a student and realised that was the attitude we had to live with by the wider society but I still had to laugh at it because I'm British and that's what we do - laugh at ourselves. By the way, if you are reading this and you are that student that I left standing in the pouring rain (hahaha), you can console yourself with the knowledge that it won't happen again...because I don't drive buses any more.
And all the Punks and Skins and Rastas held hands and cried for there fallen leader, and the parents said but why are the kids crying? Coz Rik is dead the peoples poet is dead...RIP RIK gone to soon but never forgotten,a national treasure,we all loved you very much, very sad news.:-(
Mine is a household that will be grieving the loss of a legged! Richie "Get it out" Eddie "I-I beg your pardon?!" Richie "GET IT OUT!!" Eddie "Kinky!" Richie "THE DART!!!"
Oh god! All he had to do was walk on, say "Hi" and snort and everyone just burst out laughing. The true power of Rik Mayall!

@Serial Killa you types like an afro on autotune
@Serial Killa lol love how your original comment made less sense than his did, so you edited it, then attacked him for making no sense again...

He is adorable.
I'm also adorable. And you know it.

A true artist! He walks on as Rik and then totally transforms when he sits down with Terry. Rick Mayell was truly one of a kind!
He was a good looking chap, back then....so sad he's gone

@Maitre Mark Any evidence for this?
A virgin too.

The People's Poet is dead, ( I wonder if it was the laxative pills ), farewell Rik, thanks for brightening up mine and so many other people's world!
What do you mean? Laxative pills? He is so beautiful, he had no use for that. Are you being serious?

Terry Wogan's face... You can almost tell what he's thinking.

Rick FTW!
2 series and it's done. I genuinely think that is the key. Fawlty towers. Young ones and spaced. 3 of the best British sitcoms all 2 series!
The ultimate proof of that is Chef! with Lenny Henry. The first two seasons were brilliant, the third one sucked balls.
When Rik is having a normal conversation, he is quite good looking, and there is nothing hotter than a british accent.
English accent. There's no such thing as a British accent becasue Britain isn't a country. It's the name of the Island which holds three separate countries.
A Brummy playing a student wadical has a hot accent? Really?
Gone. Never Forgotten. Miss you Rik.

Rik: "Yes?"
Terry: "Shut up.."
Rik: "Sorry Terry"
