    Hi, Algorithm, Al’s vid was a bit of cheerfulness in an otherwise bad news week, and you’ve gotta admire the Cute Thief for trekking over hostile terrain to fulfil his master’s requests when clearly he didn’t like walking in Scottish snow!

    I have a set of those LightBicycle Fat Tyre rims. They are fantastic. After 6 months of hard riding on all sorts of rocky or muddy or rooty terrain, they remain absolutely true. They are strong enough to handle some really big hits. When I ordered them from China I was blown away by the excellent service and quick turnaround from the wonderful staff at LightBicycle. They were such lovely people to deal with. LightBicycle - I really recommend them.

    Looking forward to a review of the fork. Hard to imagine a leaf spring providing any damping. At the same time it might provide some nice pre-load if its just a spring.

    • @eartharrow6772

      The forks look really interesting, I think the fibre glass would provide good vibration resistance rather than true travel

    • @nk-dw2hm
      @nk-dw2hm 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They've been very popular for gravel bikes, so I imagine with fat tires and low pressure it'd be a pretty compliant ride

    • @weareallbeingwatched4602
      @weareallbeingwatched4602 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Leaf springs have a huge level of damping. What they don't have is small size or weight... unless you make them out of carbon and put them on a bike. The lauf fork is dead weird looking... but it works fine.

    • @dansacco1964
      @dansacco1964 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@weareallbeingwatched4602 interesting. What keeps them from oscillating like a coil spring? Seems like the compression and rebound damping would always be the same and non adjustable. I assume the lauf had that figured out but its not obvious how.

    • @weareallbeingwatched4602
      @weareallbeingwatched4602 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dansacco1964 internal friction, and/or the leaves rubbing on each other (as on a lorry or truck).
      Leaf springs don't have adjustable dampers... well... apart from on racing trucks / jeeps, where it is not uncommon to run gas dampers retrofitted to leaf springs.

    with fat bike tires, once you gorilla tape and seat the bead with a tube, take the tube out and lay the wheel on a 5 gallon bucket with the open bead facing down. Gravity will bring the tire bead towards the rim edge and allow it to seal up much easier. Have done dozens of different rim and tire combos with this method and it works 100% of the time. cheers!

Thats why, the bike weights 30 kilos. Myselfe weights 90 kilos, so for me it is importante to can stop the bike safely and quickly. Greetings from Germany.

    ...and i love the look of that bike!!!

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure if I’ll do a full review but first impressions are that it feels amazing for small bump sensitivity and would be perfect for trekking or non aggressive riding. It doesn’t seem to have too much ramp up progression though and bottoms out easily if ridden hard.

    • @pinionerop1188
      @pinionerop1188 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, that all true...you can adjust the progression a bit by choosing the grade of the springs but you have to choose it when you get that fork. But think before you do!!! And since i'm not that young anymore and my riding is not that progrssive anymore i'm very happy with that fork. And I just ride it like an stiff fork and so I get along very well even on some rooty singletrails. Sometimes you just have to play a little with the tires/tire pressure.
      But maintainence is a pure joy!!!

    Now that's an interesting build for you Ali and you're 100% right, that fork is "Marmite" :-D Would be cool to try and entre it into the Trials comp, but not sure how those tyres would hold up and the fork seems to maybe be a bit light on spring rate for you. One thing I don't get, is why manufacturers don't drill fat bike rims with staggered holes to reduce the spoke angles, would help build much stronger wheels I'd think.

    • @Ali_Clarkson
      @Ali_Clarkson  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don’t worry, after some advice on tyres and forks I’ve sent the Cute Thief out on another adventure to replace these, should make it a bit better off-road and for the comp.
      Spoke-wise. Because this is a carbon rim you can make it double walled without much of a weight penalty. I think most alloy fat rims are single wall to save weight. The down side of single walled rims is that they’re just not as stiff/supported, the offset spokes give the extra support and stops the rim from flopping about. The only downside to offset spokes is that (in theory) they make a slightly weaker wheel as you’re reducing the triangulation of the spokes. An offset pattern starts to become more of a rectangle and rectangles aren’t as strong as triangles.
      Because the double wall LB rim is stiffer you can keep the triangulation of the spokes and still have a rim that’s stiff enough even without any support…plus it makes finding spoke lengths a lot easier to calculate

      Interested to see what tyres and fork you end up with, will definitely be keeping a look out for that vid.
      Get the whole triangle thing, but since the hubs are so wide, I'd figure with normal straight drilling the angles would be significantly more, so offsetting them would bring them back to normalish angles :-\

    if you cant get a tube less tyer on to a rim use the rope and spaner method
    put tyer on rim
    put rope round rim( on top of tyer)
    put rench between rope and tyer (dosent have to be wrench any long thin thing will do)
    twist wrench and add air (twisting the wrench to tention the rope)

    I’d definitely change the fork. I think it looks super weird. Bike seems a really cool. I’ve never had a bike with great brakes. I’ve never even had a bike with disc brakes lol. One day i hope to have a bike that brakes anywhere close to this fat bike

      The fork is a fantastic bit of engineering but it’s not really that great for the aggressive riding I wanna do so it will be replaced soon 👍🏻

    I'd definitely have one of those Lauf forks on my 2002 DMR Switchback steelie. It has a steel bike packing fork at the moment. Rides well but a little bit of softness would be nice.
