Love Blake's ride videos. I have that exact bike, so I can imagine how sketchy this must have been. That being said, the Dude is a great all around bike if you ride a lot of blues and greens. It's a 68.5° head tube, so it's not set up for mach chicken, but that's what makes it nice for livening up some of the otherwise less engaging trails. And like he said, the extra tire volume really makes it a fair bit more comfortable than your average XC hardtail.

    • @simonm1447

8.5 (or 0,55 bar) is a good pressure for such a ride, the 4,8 are fine on streets with 10 to 15 Psi, and 8 to 8,5 on such a trail.
On loose sand you can even reduce to 4,5 to 5 Psi

I always have a smile when I see yong people struggle on bikes that are much better than what we had in my young days. we had no suspension, because they had not been invented yet, on 26 inch rims and 1.8 inch wide tires. We used to go douwn similar trails, on a hard frame and no front suspension. The vibration was so intense, we could not see where we were going. I do admire the young going fast on their full supension but I feel previleged to have grouwn up with all the innovation that was done over the years. My current fat bike has no suspension and it bring me back to my young years but I principally use it in the winter so I can ride all year long. chears.

Riding fat tires has broadened our horizons here. It’s opened up so much more riding in the desert southwest for us. Areas that were not accessible via the old skinnier tires we had been riding for decades. Sand dunes and sandy washes with islands of prestine singletrack are now fun to ride and easy to get to. Truly the go anywhere all terrain, all season bikes. Everyone should have at least one nice fat bike in their quiver. So much fun💥💥💥

Great to see Blake giving it plenty on his FatBike down Fort Bill. My riding bud and I were supposed to be hitting it with our FatBikes last year, but the Pandemic closed the site & we have not been able to get there, Yet. - We run Maxxis Minion FBF / FBR tyres with 11psi front 12psi rear for big rough stuff. Great fun. Looking forward to seeing Blake take on the Megavalanche on his Fatty (probably running a couple of PSI more to reduce squirm & squish) - Good Job Blake!

Suggestion, Blake. One, 27.5"x4" tires. I have a Framed Carbon Wolftrax with a Bluto fork and it rolls fast! Two, Framed also has a full suspension called the Montana. 100 mil front and back but should work better. There are others out there as well. I run 8psi rear and 7psi front on mine for trail and it doesn't seem to bounce much. Smooths out the rough stuff for me fairly well. Not near as well as my 2020 Norco Sight but not bad. Fun to watch. Fatties are crazy capable!

I don't own a fat bike because I have two! This video makes me happy.
You should get your hands on something like a Salsa Bucksaw with full suspension and try this run again. It's a pretty inspiring downhill platform even with just 100MM of rear travel. Sounds crazy I know. Surprisingly nimble, handles incredibly well in the air and pointed downhill it's fast with the right rubber. I've only exploded the carbon seat stay one time... so far. Trying to avoid doing it again as the bike went out of production in 2019 and there's no more frame pieces.

You'll start strong on Megavalanche because you'll have much better grip on the snow, but once you get to the first climb and then the technical sections, the fat bike will struggle. It'll be fun to watch. I ride my fat bike from late Autumn through early spring, because it's the best bike for the snow.

7:15 in and I get my answer of 8.5 psi. With those big hits it makes sense. I like to run my Surly ICT at 6.5F-7.5B for the rough stuff. When I go into the 8's I get bounced all over the place but it's really fun if you like to boof rocks. Once the bike starts to self steer a tad the tires are good to go. If you ride a fat bike, do it full rigid, it's the only way to go!

Fatbikes are credible if you set them up correctly for such terrain. I managed 15th out of 89 in Cat1 Downieville Classic XC (a glorified enduro race with too much climbing at the beginning, dominated by full-squish MTBs) on my 2016 9:zero:7 Whiteout with only 120mm of Rockshox Bluto suspension. Tires were Maxxis Minion DHF/DHR 26" x 4.8" tires. Were it not for the multiple chaindrops (was not running a chainguide, unfortunately) could have clinched a top ten finish.

most fat bikes don't have any suspension because the tires are pretty bouncy all by themselves in fact I run about 30 PSI in mine to try and take some of the bounce out of it because it's like having a really active suspension you lose a lot of crank power to the bounciness, and there's no way to lock it out. even with 30 PSI in it I can tell if I'm in the wrong gear because the whole bike bounces with each pedal stroke

@@charliemiller4111 I don't know, I'll try pressure that low when I find a gauge that goes that low. I was running less for winter, and brought it up this high to take out some of the bounce for more efficient commuting. I don't think I had THAT much less in it though, I let air out of it until it seemed to perform good, and then in the spring I put it up to where I have it now. I've done 16 mph sprints on pavement with this pressure though, and I bushwack off trail, climbs on loose sand, go over small logs, ride off-camber across a slope... I really haven't suffered by being at this pressure, unless I really load it up with weight. it's a Surly Big Fat Dummy though so "nimble" isn't really in the cards.

That's looks more a tractor with such rubber. It was nice to see a full timed run to compare the fat bike with the hardtail from the avalanche.
Keep on rolling, do you know what time it is...

I was able to ride up Highland Mountain on their Wednesduro days and descend on the fattie. They are just a riot and the weight of the wheels in the air when you turn just feels crazy. I will say 4" tires feel a lot more playful and a lot better in the turns than the 4.8''s I ran. 4.8 definitely has that tractor feel and the turning feels a lot different. I ran Vittoria Bombolinis.

I would even argue that 4" tires work better in snow than 4.8"s. 3.8's on a 26 wheel seem to hit that sweet spot when it comes to air volume. Even in snow with low pressure, they don't act like underinflated beach balls the way bigger tires do.
