To be honest, even Koreans didn't know. Because she's a CCM singer, she doesn't appear on TV shows, and she doesn't value her reputation. Then, when it appeared on the air, Koreans were also shocked. She is not a pop singer. She is a CCM singer and she doesn't appear on TV shows. Then, in Korea, only really talented singers appeared in "I am a Singer" and competed with prominent famous singers and became widely known.

She doesn't sing songs, she lives them. And the best part is that she invites us to live them with her. You are going to get lots of recommendations for her other "competition" songs (Arirang Alone, Everyone, Lean on Me, etc) where you will hear things you've never heard before. They are all great but her most recent stuff has been much more stripped back (Misty, Stay, I Will Always Love You and several more from her stint on the series Begin Again Korea) and really show how well she connects with the songs and her audience.

Welcome to Sohyang's world. Sohyang is little known because she is an independent artist (no large label backing) due to her faith and health. She is a cancer survivor who sings to bring comfort and healing to people.
Sohyang is a South Korean gospel singer and this show Immortal Songs 2 is a contest for well known Korean artists. Each show has a theme, this one being English songs so it is in English. Part of the show is to take and rearrange a song and this is Sohyang's own arrangement as well.
Yes she did win that show. :) And one of the major things she was a part of in 2020-21 was a show called Begin Again Korea, so many great performances in there, she even rapped.

A warm welcome to the amazing world of Sohyang. She is Korean (now 43) a ccm/gospel singer, devout Christian, cancer survivor, university prof, cartoonist and fantasy novelist. She is not only one of the best female vocalists currently on the planet but a remarkable human being also. She is an independent artist who has turned down recording contracts from the big labels, including from Sony during 2020. She has no social media, and says her goal is to use her voice in order to bring comfort to people going through difficult times. Kim, So Hyang is very knowledgeable about her technique and voice and has been singing with
this level of technical proficiency since around 2007. She has yet to experience any real
regression and sings like this in virtually every song, often for up to an hour at actual concerts.
Her stamina and ease is incredible. Her supported range sits consistently at about G#3-C#6-E6,
so these Bb5 belts are not much of a challenge for her. They’re not strained at all.
She’s very well trained by professional coaches and is a coach and lecturer on technique herself!

She is working with composers that does the arrangements. She might contribute with ideas but the credit for most of the cover songs that got popular on youtube goes to Hwang Seong-je 황성제 among others. This doesn't make her less of a performer or an artist. She just didn't make these arrangements.

This song introduced me to Sohyang, this was her first performance on the show and she won the comp. Some of her Whitney Houston covers are to die for. It's worth hearing arirang alone, everyone, and I will always love you (2021)
Kim So Hyang is a cancer surviver from age 20 which made her unable to bear children. She also had 8 cases of pneumonia and almost stop singing. Discouraged, she went to America where, in Philidelphia, saw a FDR quote: "The Only Thing We Have To Fear Is Fear Itself". It encouraged her not to fear less than perfect and risk missing wonderful things. She came back and entered King of Mask competition where she won 6 times in a row with her voice weakened so she could not rehearse as much as she wanted. She found that people still wanted to hear her perform. At 43 she seems to be healthy and her voice is incredible. Try Misty, I Will Always Love You and I Won't Give Up with Begin Again where the group sang in remote locations with small audiences spread out due to COVID-19. Bring tissues because she makes you feel every word and every note. So Hyang's mission now is to comfort those going through bad times and she delivers with every performance. What makes her performance so great is the fact that she doesn’t just sing with her voice, she sings with her entire body. Her body gestures and facial expressions just pour out her emotions of the song. You can watch the entire video without any sound and you can still feel what she is trying to convey. Then when you combined her vocal along with her visual performance, it just moves you to tears. An incredible all around performer that is thoroughly entertaining to watch and listen to.
Yes yes! She sings with her whole body! Sometimes she stamps her right foot in time with the music. She gives 110% in every single performance, with her gospel roots never far behind in her vocal choices and arrangements.
I am sure musicians love to work with this level of vocalist just to have that high-level performance. Same with her regular set of backing vocalists who are more-or-less in all her Immortal Singer videos.

Morissette and So Hyang. are two of my 5 most favorite female singers. The others are Lara Fabian, Angelina Jordan, and the great Karen Carpenter.
Actually the H is pronounce but only softly gently puffed from the back of the throat. I've spoken Korean for many years, it is difficult for the western ear to pick it up sometimes but is essential to saying her name correctly.
I first met her 3 years ago and have loved her ever since. I can't escape now. She always impresses. Now she has become an irreplaceable existence to me. Thanks for the reaction video.

This show that she's on is a competition among famous as well as up-and-coming singers in South Korea. Each episode there is a new theme of songs to cover (i.e. oldies, a vetted artist, pop songs, etc.) and a bunch of singers/bands compete to win the Immortal Songs trophy. Sohyang won this episode. She has competed maybe 5 or 6 times and has won twice, which is pretty good considering how much amazing talent South Korea has :)
I'm so shocked that a vocal coach doesn't know Sohyang yet, one of the top female vocalist in the world.

Thanks for your reaction on this amazing artist and wonderful personality. Unfortunately she experienced 9 pneumonias and stopped performing for 2 years. Lately she returned to us with less vocal power but with much more feeling and joy in her singing. She is the epitomy of a singer and she does her own arrangements on her performances. K Bar's post has some good suggestions on where to go next, just make sure you pick videos with subtitles on her Korean songs.

I admit that I don't like listening to Sohyang before. I thought she just sounded so shouty every time. But ever since I watched some of her 2020 and 2021 performances, God knows how much I adore her voice so much. She just improved so much and now, I even appreciate some of her previous performances as well.

She was in the choir at church. Her bf heard her sing and told her she could make many people very happy. She's not a kid, she got a late start. She was born April of 1978. She'll be 44 in April.

Sohyang is by far the most interesting and exciting female singer to listen to and to watch her perform. She is pretty in every sense and just can't get enough of her. You should listen to Arirang and Never Enough and I am sure you will fall in love with her.

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself, with the input of her in-law family and musical assistants, teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks five languages: Korean, English, French, Vietnamese and Chinese, as well as reading Greek!
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a cancer survivor from uterine cancer at the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in Asia.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: th-cam.com/video/te_L9ofhUt8/w-d-xo.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
After being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she decided to enter a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on TH-cam.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on TH-cam and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and went to Japan in order to have her perform eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and closing the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So as a consequence she does not pursue fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via TH-cam, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향--So Hyang--has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today. So Hyang is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. But So Hyang has stated in an interview that her name means "small and shiny."

OK, I’ll stop gushing now.
Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she is also a published fantasy novelist and, furthermore, has a theological treatise on the Book of Revelation in print. She is also a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist. She taught herself English by watching Disney's "The Little Princess" "about one hundred times" when she was just a kid, speaks English with a _perfect_ North American accent and has a bubbly personality.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do? Ironically, So Hyang stated in another interview that both she and her in-law family were surprised to discover that she could sing so excellently!
Though she is less than 5' 4" and only about 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it, and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear, and that is important to note as these are _essential_ elements of any great musical production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

I subscribed to your channel because I’m a big fan of Morissette! Like you I have never seen this performance from So Hyang and like you I’m blown away with her voice!! Just beautiful and amazing vocalist!! Just because I’m a big Morissette fan that doesn’t stop me from listening to other artist. I really appreciate singers and performers that has that X factor and uniqueness with their voice and just like Morissette - So Hyang has that 💯!! In my opinion from watching her for the first time she is a true Star ⭐️ vocalist!!

Welcome to the world of Sohyang. She is a Korean gospel singer and she is incredible. The show was not the kind of show you win as such - they have established singers perform their versions of well known songs. I suggest reacting to Lean on me and Arirang Alone. She performed both on episodes of Immortal Songs. Arirang is Sohyang’s rendition of a Korean folk song. You will find a version from Immortal Songs that has English captions. I cry every time she performs it. She makes her listeners FEEL what she is singing and that is something special.
Please listen to “Everyone”. Wit subtitles. She said it was her most exhausting performance. A 7 minute master class of technique, emotion, and storytelling. For recent her work het version of “Misty” is the best I’ve ever heard.

I found Sohyang right after I found Morissette in 2020, and they're two of my favorites now. Sohyang won this show, and she also won the Michael Bolton special with Lean On Me. She did another rendition of Lean On Me last year, and it was good to see that despite all the issues with Pneumonia that she has had to deal with, she can still kill that song.

So glad to see SoHyang featured, I do hope you will want to react to more from her. "Arirang Alone" and "Everyone" are two not to miss before moving to some of her more recent songs. I enjoy groups and harmonies, but she is one of my favourite solo vocalists with such a powerful story and motivation for singing that shines through.

Oh yes! She did win this segment with this song and won numerous Awards( in my country, Canada, the Banff Fine Arts and Media University gave her an Award of Excellence for her Arrangement on this Performance, she also won with ,Lean on Me , for songs written or hits made by Micheal Bolton and he asked her on his tour of Korea, she accepted humbly but had commitments with Church and Charity so could only do one concert! Josh Groben has sung several songs with her at his invite, David Foster had her with him in Japan last year for 7 shows in 4 days! Also sang with Brian McKnight and Kirk Franklin had her do several songs at his Korean tour( she is first and foremost a Contemporary Christian Artist. She loves all uplifting music, Pop, Jazz , R AND B, Rock, Rap, she even did the Korean made for TV , The Sound of Music! Did the voice of , Moana for Disney’s Korean version, done countless OST’s( Official Sound Tracks , for many Jorean Drama shows, even had a bit part in one as well as cameo and a bit part in a couple of the, Fast and Furious Movies! She has successfully penned several Fantasy Novels, several Faith based Books, does Minister on occasion ( both her Husbands Parents are Ministers and help manager her, she is very close to both and all the siblings, one- JinJoo Lee was the gustatory player in Joe Jonas Band! Life has been trying for her but she doesn’t show it! Her female role models are 1. Mariah 2. Celine 3. Whitney! She also teaches voice and Performance at University, and of course Performed in Churches in so Many countries around the World! Won’t go into her health issues but God saved her from Cancer immediately following her Wedding at 20, and she was so grateful, she Promised to use her voice to Praise God and to lift the Spirits of those that suffer! She has turned down contract with three big International Labels and a Couple Korea ones! 4 God told her No, she was not ready, the fifth she turned down because she felt she had become to selfish, greedy and so hardy argued with God much over it( previously , it was her and him alone in basement of Family home. As you get to know her I think like many of her Fans, love her Character and Personality as much as her Heavenly voice!

Thanks for an authentic and knowledgeable reaction. Immortal Songs is not the usual competition. Each episode invites seven stars in their own genres (pop, classical, traditional Korean, rock, theatrical, etc) to perform a song of their choice relating to the episode theme. All are paid for their perfomances and have complete control of arrangement, instrumentation and presentation. The studio audience votes for their favorite performance but there are no prizes nor advancement to another round. Sohyang won this episode and participated 6 times in 2014-2018. Some of her best live performances 2020- include "I will always love you", "I'll be there", "Misty", "If I ain't got you", "I won't give up", "Never Enough", her own song "Stay", plus many other Korean songs including completely different "Day Day".
#subscriptionsquad Sohyang's vocals are impeccable as is her faith as a Christian. She, as do the sisters of 4th Impact,
have the faith and lifestyle that is very rare in this day and age. It is easy to say you believe but much harder to live like you believe. The sisters are fans of So Hyang and so am I.

Yes, So Hyang won this competition. In fact, it wasn't even close. If you watch this episode, which is available to watch freely on South Korean TV, you will see that the other performers were very good but then So Hyang came out on the stage at the end of the program and blew them all away! I mean she was miles beyond what anyone else could do. We all think this is one of the greatest live performances by anyone, anywhere, anytime. And we think So Hyang is the best female vocalist on the planet right now in 2022 and has been for a decade! I'll put a biography here for you to read. She is one _amazing_ woman! She's probably an alien ... 🛸👌😎😉🤷♂️
Sohyang is a truly gifted vocalist and one of the best vocalist of all times!! Her tone,resonance and unmatched belting power helps her to stand out among the crowd.She has a really strong mix and it's really resonant. Her falsettos are ethereal. Also , please react to her performances(arirang alone , leon on , everyone , you raise me up). Her signature note is Bb5 which she sings in a strong mix. She belts upto a C#6. She belts G#5 like they are nothing.

She is a powerhouse singer and a powerful Christian - you saw, I think, how she turned a secular song into a song of ministry. She has said many times that she sings to minister to those in pain. Others have already given you all the information, so just let me say that all the songs listed here are amazing, but Arirang Alone has a special place in my heart. It is an ancient song - thought to be about 600 years old - that is very special to the Korean people and she does just a wonderful job with it. Many fans of great vocalists listen to the "holy trinity" of today's best singers. So-hyang is the Queen, Damash is the King, and Morresett is the Princess! Queen So-hyang has many recent performances, particularly on the Korean TV show "Beginagain." There is a TH-cam channel titled the same. She has 2 songs in particular that are ultra amazing. The a cover of Whitney Houston's version of "I''LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU" This is done on a sea dock with the wind blowing and minimal instruments backing her up. Absolutely a must! The second song Sung by So-hyang is "LOVE POEMS" by Kpop idol "IU" (check her out someday) who wrote the song to tell her friends to please come to her if they were considering suicide. Several dear close friends had died that way recently. Even though it is in Korean the emotion is over powering. So-hyang's version is sung at the DMZ spot where an infiltration tunnel was dug by the north. This song is emotional so be ready, I recommend you read the lyrics first.

I see Harold is saying to drop the H, but the H is sounded but it is said softly and blended into the Y. Her name contains 2 syllables. If you say "So Hyoung" or "So Hyang" is close enough. I think only another Korean can say her name precisely.

SoYoung is actually another very popular Korean name for girls. It would be like calling Cody, Cory, which I get pretty often.
