@Tara Simon Studios - outside of the analysis of the technique/technical side of the performance, do you have any thoughts on - when covering a song - leaving out a part of the song (in this case the "Sail on silver girl" section, which - for me - is a crucial part of the story of the song)? I can appreciate her execution of the song on that pure level as it relates to your analysis, but where do the lyrics fit in as an integral part of the song (if we are looking at covering a song as a "reading" of sorts)? The Art Garfunkle performance of the song is so delicate, this is pure torch song (to me anyway).

@tommccarthy3052: I read somewhere that Paul Simon wrote 2 verses for the song, and his music producer or manager told him to add a 3rd verse. He admits it's a weaker verse, as it was added to extend and close out the song.

Oh wow this is the best analytic video of Sohyang in youtube. I have to say, I’ve watched a lot of reactors/vocal coaches react to this performance but none explained it as you do. You are so good. I love how to analyzed this. Great video
there would not be a singer in the world that works harder, thinks harder, studies harder than So Hyang Her performances are no accident. They come after tons and tons of practice, worrying, thinking etc.... so when she gets on stage - she is more at ease and relaxed than when off stage. She did say she feels at home on stage, and nervous off.

I have never considered myself as a singer. I am a songwriter. I sing good enough to get it across to the person I choose to demo my songs. If I took lessons from you, I could learn a lot. I love how you break it down. When Paul Simon wrote the lyrics to this song, he only wrote 2 versus in the beginning. Garfunkel felt the song was to short, so Simon wrote a 3rd verse upon his request. I know they never dreamed that a singer like So Hyang would take it to places that it had never been before. God be the glory.

I've been watching a couple of these videos with So Hyang and... is is just me or are these pretty crazy arrangements?! I mean it in a good way, I love it! I don't usually watch music talent TV shows but I don't think I've ever heard these kind of arrangements. They're usually more straight forward, or more true to the original maybe.
Concept of Immortal Songs 2 program, where those performances Tara is reacting to are from, is that artists give their own take on the songs, hence most of them are doing their own arrangement, version. It encourages creativity and gives them space for it, with live music (choice of orchestra, band, artists playing their own instrument, choir in performances) and free will in length of performance (not unusual for them to be even 6,7 minutes long). Every show has different theme whether it's singer or composer tribute, Korean or foreign. Lean on Me was Michael Bolton Special, Arirang Alone was Traditional Folk Song Special, BOTWater was English Pop Song Special, etc. There were also special episodes with duets or performing with your family member :)
It's not like typical talent show where contestants sing covers close to original or mimicking original even. Also contestants on IS2 are singers in the showbusiness industry in Korea across all generes from folk singers, kpop idols, soloists like Sohyang, rock singers, musical actors etc. The competition element is really like an extra element and the core is music I'd say.

I believe I read somewhere that Sohyang fully does her own arrangements (in case you weren’t yet blown away from the vocals itself).
So informative, how you can dissect the techniques used by these singers who have trained to bridge their appagias so flawlessly--you're a gold mine, Tara; so fortunate to have you as a vocal resource, and you're always so semi-detached and professional, so you can educate us. But here's a challenge, affectionately thrown at your "emotion control center": react to Sohang's "HUG ME", live at the DMC Festival, 2018, WITHOUT ANY STOPS (haven't heard of any strikes and the "MBCkpop" channel upload has been up almost 8 months). THEN, after you recover, share your thoughts/critiques. The lyrics are those of a woman whose relationship with the love of her life has crashed and she can't stop herself from desperately pleading for him to reconsider. But she's sees it just isn't in him, any more, to love her. So, she chokes out one last plea, before he walks away--"Just hug me....." Please react to So Hyang's "Where are you", but not the TH-cam version which is terribly filmed (half the video is panning the faces of her competitors), and even worse, has cut-ins at the worst possible moment (and no English subtitles).
