One of her top songs. This was the first song I ever heard her sing, I never get tired of it.
This is her arrangement, she arranged all the contest songs with her husband and team.

They followed Sohyang backstage after this performance and she collapsed in an armchair, telling another contestant that she was literally trembling all over she had put so much into the song. She then related that she had broken down and cried time after time while practising the song, it was so emotional for her. I don't know how she can deliver such intense performances without breaking down!
Sohyang is, in fact, a 100% self taught singer except for a mere handful of sessions with Seth Riggs in 2010 when she was on holiday in Los Angeles. She taught herself by imitation, beginning with Mariah Carey's "Music Box" CD and then moving on to Celine and Whitney. Nothing like imitating the best, eh? Sohyang has about 15 or 20 live performances that are simply the best I have ever seen by anyone. She is now the _de facto_ standard for female pop singers. Sohyang really _is_ the joy of music. 😉
It is hard to believe Sohyang was on the verge of giving up singing altogether in 2016, isn't it?

Great reaction. Suggest You Raise Me Up from same show next. She's wearing white dress/wrap w/ black sash. Best rendition. Then Everyone...a complete 7+ minute vocal masterpiece. Use the Vimeo version. Has English subtitles. This "competition " is really just a pseudo one. All the singers on it are already famous established stars. It's more of a bragging rights type situation along with some theme for each show. She performed Lean On Me for the Michael Bolton special. Side note, her performance of Lean On Me actually alone won the Banff World Music Award for this show. Dont stop w/Sohyang. Soooo much more to hear. HAGD

Thankyou for a great reaction & please keep reacting to Sohyang because not only is it great fun but the more vocal coaches, fellow vocalists etc, people who know what they are talking about when it comes to music & singing support Sohyang, the quicker we’ll rid the airwaves of those haters who seem to be on a mission to make us believe that Sohyang can’t sing, she can only scream etc. I feel strongly about haters full stop but I just feel extra protective of Sohyang because she is the last person you could level anything bad at because she is gifted musically but she is just the most beautiful person, both inside & out & has been thru ‘stuff’ that a lot of people will never experience in a lifetime.
Finally, I wonder if after seeing that performance you were left thinking ‘ which Sohyang performance should I watch next’. Obviously go with what your viewers are recommending but the reality is that it doesn’t really matter because it’s always of such high quality.

Thanks, Bethany. Sohyang's mix is legendary. However, no reaction I've ever seen has mentioned Sohyang's syncopation with the choir. She comes in just before or just after the choir, and it beautifully accentuates her voice -- typical of gospel singing, but brilliantly executed in this performance.

Thanks so much for reacting to the incomparable Sohyang! Very insightful breakdown. Sohyang has great input on the arrangements she sings of covers (with her 'team'). There are so few like her, a vocal master/monster with the ability to convey absolute vulnerability and honesty in each note. You have many more performances to hear, which is exciting! Her rendition of 'I Have Nothing' with her in a blue dress (Whitney Houston cover) is fantastic. "Lean On Me' with Michael Bolton in the audience launched a concert tour, for her with him., through Asia. She is the diva's diva, without any of the negative parts. She simply sings, by her own accord, to make people feel better...

I think her amazing technique allows her to tackle any genre & adapt to it & the more performances you watch, the more you will see this. I agree with what you said about being relaxed when you watch her sing because you know in advance that’s whatever she’s singing, she’s gonna nail it & that is such a nice place to watch a performance. The hard thing I think, especially for people like yourself,vocal coaches, other singers etc, when doing a reaction video is that you hear many things that pass us not educated (musically)people by & I would imagine that you automatically want to pause & explain/enlighten your viewers when you hear something good BUT if you gave onto that urge everytime you heard something amazing from Sohyang you’d never get to the end of the song!! I appreciate what you’re saying about singers all have their thing that they excel in but I have to say that having been a fan of Sohyang for approx 5 years ( this was the first performance of hers I ever saw & only gave it a listen because I love the original) it appears that she seems to excel in every department

If you want to hear something very recent she has just appeared on this same show with a Korean theatre singer named Min Woo Hyuk. They did a beautiful cover of Park Hyoshins Iconic song Wildflower. 44 years old and still looks and sings like a woman half her age. Her wonderful technique will allow to sing for many years to come. Here’s hoping she can avoid the illnesses that have affected her since her early 20s
I like that she takes it down to a whisper on the final "I will lay me, "then belts "down' for a huge finale.

She talks in an interview where Seth Riggs taught her on her arpeggio practice, to NOT use the normal la la la, but to sing nay nay nay nay, nay nay nay nay nay. To my inexperienced brain, that is probably that speaking voice he was getting her in a habit of using.
That totally makes sense regarding tongue position. We lift root of tongue when enunciating /l/ while pressing the whole tongue down during /n/ sound.
A lot of coaches suggest that keeping our tongue down as low as possible keeps you from straining during executing high notes and beltings.
I'm gonna jot down this routine for future practice.

She just got out of Hospital and was advised Not to sing...So she did that....lol< >But it did Put Her back in the Hospital for a week
On an Interview Her Doctor &She Both Feared That this would End Her Singing Career ( But Lord Did Not see it That way )
It's really a miracle this one of the most skilled vocalist of all time could be in such poor condition. And definitely she is much
more than great technician and has Perfect Control of Her Gift...and Her singing is so special.
If there should be only one word to define her music, that must be love. She always talks about
love and embodies it singing a song. Love is what she's all about. And, in her love, there is no
place for judging and pushing.
So we only have to listen and enjoy her blessing of love without any pressure. I hope all of you
guys will get through your own nights with her comfort.
Don't be fooled by the thought that there's no more room for improvement in her vocals.
It seems against the course of nature, but her development is ongoing🙂 At 45yrs old

Yay you came back to her. Here's the thing, what she does in head voice in a slew of songs is as impressive as the mix stuff. Breathe from masked singer will floor you. Fate from I am singer will take you on two magic rocketships. You don't even know lol. I'd put a good ten of her performances above Bridge. You have to hear some of the other stuff she has out there.
Also if you want to hear high mix insanity... it's Mona Lisa from masked singer. Lean on Me. And the end of Dream is especially insane. Each are nuts and the high mix is more than you've heard yet. But the others are just better. Same with Misty from begin again korea, a jazz cover. No powerful stuff but it's like wait what. Home from masked singer was the other magical head voice stuff.
She is wizard level unlike anything out there and you haven't scratched the surface yet. Some reactors tend to do a few then stop. And it's like boy if only you knew.

Are you referring to the difference between 'You want to be!' and her being a cancer survivor? She's an incredible person and truly an angel who has overcome so much. Your review was fantastic! You’re doing a great job, and you are an amazing person. Keep up the great work
You will get a lot of requests for ones always covered. A lot have much of what you've seen. It's so many that you won't get to "the others". I'd be tempted to save Everyone, Lean on Me, You Raise Me Up, I have nothing... for later. And that's acknowledging each but you raise me up is better than Bridge is to me. You raise me up is kinda, eh. And it's great lol. You just have to hear some of her long one breath crazy head voice phrases. Namely do Breathe from masked singer. And Fate from I am singer is simply epic...half the audience is crying. So few ever make it to Fate and it even took me forever to really land on. So I'm certain a stack of those saying the same ones the most didn't even get to it either.
Just the voice did the most of hers of anyone probably and had to react to it again a second time a year later for his birthday and came to the conclusion it's one of the greatest things he'll ever see and hear. It just sucks no one even makes it to a few of these. So the thought would be then those aren't as good...but ummm. Heck mute Fate I am singer and just look at the audience by the end. I say all that and it's still not her head voice magic stuff. It's just something.
