    A superbly acted plot with Bates as an elegant problem solver. And as Lord Grantham breathes a sigh of relief, one by one the domino bricks of history fall. Instead of causing a scandal with Mrs. Dudley Ward, Prince Edward remains undamaged until he will cause an even bigger scandal with Wallis Simpson a few years later. As a result, Edward's younger brother, as George VI, succeeds him to the throne, followed by his daughter Elisabeth, whose platinum jubilee for 70 years of reign we have just celebrated.

      @@jayt9608 Downton Abbey does foreshadowing a little to well. But as a historical drama they have to stay true to facts, how much ever it may pain the Earl of Grantham. Even the King in the first Downton Abbey movie tried to get Lord Hexam to go on an African tour with the Prince, in an effort to knock some sense into him. Gratefully, he and Lady Edith were expecting their first child. So all in all, me thinks Bertie dodge a bullet. ☺️

      I only meant that the good earl had no idea what scandal the prince would cause as king. He simply could not know that in a rather short time he would be abandoning the throne to marry an American, which was scandal enough, double divorcee with two living husbands, which was a breach of societal norms beyond toleration. This is why I stated that he had no idea that his comments would age so poorly. However, aside from the scandals caused by his brother's grandchildren, the royal family did enjoy a relatively...peaceful reign under both King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II.

  • @johndawid8059

    One of my most favorite scenes. Grantham was, at best, a bumbling administor. But he's a chip off the ole' block...remember earlier in the series when The Dowager is talking with the Doctor....and Isobel and Mr. Mosley come in...and how The Dowager casually glances over Mr. Mosley's afflication while chattering away...and in the process machine-guns Isobel's diagnosis? "Sometimes things are best left to the professionals!"
    Now, with the letter, we see that the Earl is truly Violet's progeny. At the very moment necessary, he calls in Bates....because "Sometimes things are best left to the professionals." The verbiage was under-the-table and over-the-head, yet the need was direct. And it was dispatched accordingly. Lord Grantham, taking the baton from Bates once his work was completed, puts paid to the issue by dragging a red herring across the close of the issue. "Dropped the letter"...HA!
    Bates skill in reading Lord Grantham, and Gratham reading Bates was brilliant. It's as if there were two storylines here...one spoken, one unspoken. The Right Honourable Earl was not above a bit o skullduggery for the better good....and knew when to let go, and when to pick the thread back up. Bates, knew what was at stake, did his business, and rectified the situation. And through that entire time Grantham was in good hands -- and knew it.
    Absolutely brilliant acting, scripting....just wow!

      Same! I want to see more about his and Robert's history during the Second Boer War (1899-1902), particularly with the nuggets of backstory that have suggested but not confirmed Robert and Bates were the previous generation's Matthew and William. Also would be interesting to see if Bates is at all jealous of Robert's happy marriage with Cora, while he's married to Vera.

    • @valkyriesardo278
      @valkyriesardo278 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      We hear some of his history when Anna meets with his mother during the miniseries. He acquires some of his nefarious talents during his prison sentence for murder. During the series, Bates forges Mosely's signature on an I.O.U note because the man would be too ashamed to accept charity. It is clear that Robert understands Bates can pick a pocket but keeps that knowledge in confidence. It is not clear whether Robert knows Bates has a talent for forgery. I love the writing on this show. There are some dazzling one-liners. What is even more admirable is they leave some words unspoken and the actors have the talent to convey the meaning without overt display. Bates unceremoniously usurps the overcoat from the butler. The butler is a stickler for protocol but barely flickers an eyelash. He instantly understands that Bates has a reason which he need not justify.

      Firstly, I highly doubt the Prince was a Nazi.
      Secondly, at this point of the story, I don't even think the Nazi party existed. If it did it was in it's infancy and wouldn't even have been a blip on English people's radar.

    It’s interesting how a piece of actual history of the liaison between prince David and lady Dudley ward is woven into fiction . It is ironic when Robert says “ when he is safely married to a foreign princess “ when the truth is the kind abdicated for an American divorcee . The actor chosen to play prince David is so different from the actual tall and handsome David though

Let’s look how many scenes she made: played around with a married man, fell in love with a black singer, sneaked into a tea room and had fun with a farmer boy, the prince of Wales’ love letter, accidentally told count Rostov and prince Kuragin about Atticus’ Jewish background…
