    It's funny to watch this, because it's something I've been doing for 34 years now. :-)
    Awesome to see chiptunes doing so amazingly well. Now it's everywhere! 8-bit rules.

    This mix of contemporary instruments / electronic sounds & old school trackers & chiptune software has always been really interesting, Renard has been doing some of this aswell and I dig the sound it achieves in the mix of all things.

    By doing something you like you can improve in other things, that happened to me, really, you see, I'm a spriter, I like making pixel art, by doing sprites I've learned a lot about color theory, about how invoriment affects lighting and shadows, I have learned how to relate colors on a more uniform and logical way, not to mention more aesthetic, and all that happened without even realizing.
    Amazing chiptune, I really like to listen to it when I'm spriting, it helps me a lot, cheers.

The guitar and the chiptunes flow so well, it would be a great song to use when you feel like giving up or need some motivation to do anything! Check out the dude, too! His other songs are gold just like how firelight is! Like “Overworld”, or the Pikselhjerte album, or “pathfinder”, or “Buttrape in Disneyland”, and SO MUCH MORE. Bruh, I love this dude!

      D'Angelo Maysonet so I can't buy the game for a emulator only a real GB LUCKY ME I HAVE 2. :D

    • @werlder
      @werlder 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I guess if you wanted to be legitimate, the rom itself is a penny at their website. No one really produces the carts anymore, so they recommend that if you don't want to use an emulator, you have to by an empty cart and flash the rom to it (which is a hassle and I would rather just emulate it).

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      D'Angelo Maysonet Real GB has a distorted sound which helps it sound punchy and coherent, emulators don't bother emulating the shitty tiny transistors :P

      CJ G to use lsdj on a gameboy, you have to purchase the program for $2 (or more if you wanna donate to the creator) and then you have to buy a usb cartridge to put the program on. Usb carts are usually like $30-$40 and you get them from either kitsch bent or nonfinite electronics. c:

    Why would I listen to someone talk about chip music, when they don't know the difference between an ST and Amiga, and don't know they are 2 different things, and don't know that there was no chip music on the Amiga anyway, it was all sampled (Amiga tracker tunes are awesome, but not chip music). Also, fuck emulation - the point of chip music is to use the CHIP to the best of your ability to create music, if we had sampled sound and fantastical magic software back in the day, we'd bloody well have used that!

    • @theycallmejpj
      @theycallmejpj 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      have a look at the title. this video isn't even about chiptune directly, chiptune is just being used to illustrate a point about constraints driving musical creativity. sadly the whoe point was missed on you because you were too busy worrying about what type of microchips sits in an amiga .............

    • @stunthumb
      @stunthumb 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like chiptune and all but how is this worthy of a Ted talk?
    Towards the end he only suggested to try different things in life to be 'masters' of a subject, the other half was a concert an promotion.
    Disappointed.

    • @TylerOGuinn
      @TylerOGuinn 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Kazathul There is so much he could have said but he never really hit the "point" of his talk. It was just "chiptune is awesome" and "i'm better because of it", when he could have mentioned that the limits helped boost his creativity in song writing.

    • @lukehardison713
      @lukehardison713 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kazathul TedX means basically anyone can talk. Ted Talks are educational, TedX is anything.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Kazathul I feel like 99% of TED talks are basically selling a product of some kind. "This is how we all are going to perform surgeries in 10 years (my company already has the product that you'll use!)"
      TEDx talks are selected in a less formal manner, and sometimes it's same sales bullshit, and sometimes, interesting things come up, and i believe this qualifies as interesting. This guy introduces a grassroots movement, which is largely non-commercial or barely commercialized in nature, a movement with no highly visible and affluent advocates, and showing how it helped him become a better craftsperson at something vaguely related, while entertaining the audience.

  • @wazkatango
    @wazkatango 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Um, no. I appreciate your willingness to try and introduce VGM to the world...but that didn't even cover 1% of what makes it special at all. No mention of arps? Strong leads? Counter-melodies? Pitch bending? Pulse-width modulation? Filtering? Sampling vs synthesis? Lack of human limitations on performance? Wavetable synthesis?
    It's not all about "limits" and square-waves.

    • @Trohnics
      @Trohnics 10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I believe they were just introducing Chiptune music (Not all VGM) to the audience to peak their interests. This wasn't a documentary of sorts, but more of a small showcase. However you are right; VGM is incredible and should be explained with as much intensity as you can feel when creating or listening to it.

    • @DanimalCannonOfficial
      @DanimalCannonOfficial 10 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      would have loved to cover those things, I had a very strict time limit and a lot of intended topics got cut. The topics of arps, strong leads, counter melodies, pitch bending, and pulse width modulation got covered in great detail when I performed the song Jean Luc which has all of those in spades.

      _Re: wazkatango's initial comment_
      I am familiar with, like, three of the things you listed. I am working with Famitracker now but it seems like that's just the tip of the iceberg. Can you recommend any other good programs or some well written guides that could help me learn more about the types of things you listed up there?

    • @wazkatango
      @wazkatango 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Flandre Scarlet Famitracker with all its expansion chips can do most everything, but other chip music programs are DefleMask and VGM Music Maker for the Sega Genesis chip, GoatTracker for C64, and *shiver* MML for everything else (like the TurboGrafx chip). If you're looking for guides...you pretty much have to google around. Personally, I just listened to a metric ton of game soundtracks, look out for artists who did something technically special with the chip, and then took their songs apart to see how the did it. This type of music is just so niche that finding complete (and easy to understand!) information in one place is difficult.

    Plays awesome 8 bit track and then shits on it with generic metal chords. Doesn't seem like much of a cool innovative thing to me. I just want to hear the track.

    Probably one of the least useful TED talks out there. Instead of going on the topic of how and why; he went for half the talk playing his songs and badmouthing software for being too simplistic; but then when he is creating a sound, he uses a preset instead of coding the registry of the chip to produce the desired effect. I came here to learn about algorithms and ended up watching pretty pictures and listening to a song played live.
    So not sure which is which...are software too simple so you won't learn how to use them, but you don't need to know about how a chip produce a sound and use a pre-defined algorithm to manipulate a sound? If a person does chiptunes as musician, they just use a synth with a SID in it or another 8 bit chip (or emulate it via wavetable or using crush filters that degrade the signal to make it sound 8 bit), but if you want to know how the sausage is made, you need to learn about how a signal works and how to apply math to a signal to generate effects... That is the programming part.

      Yeah I dont think anyone cares about the long paragraphs u wrote. I mean your opinion but if it's not useful to you then y u watching?

      Why I watch it? You mean why I watched the whole thing? Because to form an opinion about something, you have to watch the whole thing. Next time will ask you to give me a summary.

    Sorry to appear purist but... I have the habbit to listen pure chiptune music. This fuckin' guitar has nothing to do here for me. It sounds just doesn't fit. When I listen Sabrepulse who mixes chiptune with breakcore samples I have not this impression of "why is this here ?". This man doesn't convince me at all.

    Pretty disappointing. I expected a decent ted talk and instead I get what I hoped I wouldn't. He isn't well spoken at all, really, and he doesn't explain the nitty gritty of chiptune, which I had hoped he would. Rather, if this was my first experience with chiptune, I would see it as a thing for kids to play around with, and not serious music. Seriously lame.
