Ι honestly thought I was immune to horror films after watching so many cheap, popcorn-horror movies. Every film seemed to disrespect the viewer using horror movie cliches again and again, like jump scares, creepy children and characters you don't care about and can't sympathize with, who take obviously wrong decisions . I am so happy I watched this film and remembered how it feels to be thrilled by a horror movie! I also love that I wasn't sure what the theme of the movie was exactly before watching it; social drama, or paranormal horror movie? I miss so much watching a movie without having it being spoiled by the movie's marketing campaign.
Sinjin Smyth Deluded? I don’t care that he’s rich...or Jewish. What does that have to do with anything? You wouldn’t happen to be an internet TROLL, would you?? :)
Sinjin Smyth Yes, a tried and true internet troll in his natural environment lol. Yes. I’m a paid shill...Ari Aster pays me to like random videos about his work. LOL. It doesn’t pay all that well, but you see, I’m not Jewish, so they don’t pay me as well. But it pays the bills. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to clean up this foam from my mouth that is dripping on my keyboard. :P
Sinjin Smyth I never said you said I was Jewish, you halfwit lol. Also, you were the one saying I had foam dripping from my mouth...memory problems? You’re too easy, chooch. You are amusing, as most internet trolls are...but not very clever or unique. Just your basic run-of-the-mill internet troll. You don’t like the film. I get it. I do. Get it? The only reason I’m even responding to you is that...it’s fun! LOL. I wonder what you’ll say next!?! I anxiously await your next bout of verbal diarrhea lol. Your turn! And.....GO!
Sinjin Smyth you are a loser in life if you leave comments like this on the nice message sign543 left. Cleanse your soul and stop being so negative and maybe you will be less miserable.
Loved his debut, can't wait to see what Ari Aster has next. He has major potential. All of his previous work is great. I'm on board for whatever he has coming up!
Sinjin Smyth why do you reply to dozens of positive comments on this video? It's very pathetic how upset you are that other people like something that you didn't. You're foaming at the mouth! P.S. Don't forget to poo in the loo!
This movie hit me in a way I never expected while going in. I literally broke down at one point it got to me so deeply. Hell of a first feature. Can’t wait for his next
I haven’t been so disturbed at the movies as I was watching Hereditary. Doesn’t go for cheap jump scares and predictable setup, it’s genuinely unsettling and gets the heart going lol midsommar did the same for me
i know this may seem odd but i'm really fascinated by him as person. he just seems to be so shy and vulnerable, he even mumbles at times or stumble on his words; and then you watch his movies and your jawline drops for how terrifying they are. I just guess that's his own way to overcome traumas? (which just confirms my idea that horror is a cathartic experiece). i dont know, his mind amazes me, he's just an introvert dude who loves creepy movies , he's a great director, he brought horror to a new level. keep giving me nightmare material, king. long live weirdos. !!!!!
This was definitely one of the most scary movies I’ve ever seen. The acting was insanely good and I felt the real pain and terror and it was terrifying
I'm not a horror fan at all, and I consider this one of my top five films easy. Or maybe I'm a horror fan after all, lol But imagine not many films like this one. I almost walked out. I never felt so stressed out watching a film. Just dying for some relief. It was great!
That droning noise they used at points in the film for some reason gave me anxiety and made my reaction to the film even more strong. This is an excellent piece of work and my favorite film of the year so far. There's been a sort of resurgence of fantastic horror movies in the last few years. I mean, there is usually at least one good horror movie a year, but since like 2015 there seems to be at least 3 or 4 excellent ones, ones that are like Hereditary in terms of atmosphere, tone and style to a certain extent instead of annoying jumpscares.
StarfighterX1 I would love to hear some of the horror films you really enjoyed. I’m a huge fan of the genre and if there is a film I might have missed I’d love to know. Always looking for better horror films.
Sinjin Faull I have seen the Babadook. I liked the cinematography and the feeling of dread but found the kid a bit annoying. I have not seen pyewacket though. Thank you. I will check it out.
It's hard to believe Hereditary was made by a first time director, it's so effective, it opens up so much conversation too. Was that a PT reference, the picture of Peter with the eyes cut out, on the attick floor, near the end?? It HAS to be, the two best horror works in each medium, in years or maybe ever?
It was a breath of fresh air in the “horror” drama. It was real, it was relatable and heart poundingly terrifying. I loved it and I hated it. I loved the master crafted filmmaking and I hated that it had dominated my feelings and thoughts since I left the theater last night! I also saw a bit more of some of my Salt Lake City crowd that I ever wanted to!! Haha. WeLL Done!
i remember watching this and feeling completely immersed in the film to the point where I realized at one point in the film my fist had bench clenched so tightly for about 15 minutes that my hand was starting to hurt. This has never happened to me before. This was a new feeling for me that has never happened before while watching a horror film.
Best horror movie of all time. Hands down. My buddy and i always see movies together, been doin it for 15 yrs now, this is the first movie we’ve ever gone to see in theaters more than once. And we went 3 times! Incredible!!!
Aster might be one of the best things to happen in horror cinema in recent years. Both Hereditary and Midsommar are incredibly disturbing, eerie and terrifying, and both know how to work with their characters and imagery. I'm really excited to see Disappointment Blvd.!
There's never been a movie that disturbed me to my core so much that I had to stop watching it, until Hereditary. The Scene (yes, that scene) messed me up so badly at that time. It made me depressed. I couldn't stop dwelling on it for days. It wasn't even necessarily *what* happened (though it was completely unexpected), but Peter's (Alex Wolff) reaction to it in the immediate aftermath. Knowing that he was then going to go home, I knew it was going to be too much for me to handle. When he pulled into the driveway I found myself saying aloud to no one "no, no, no, no". I shut it off. I didn't think I'd be able to finish it. I finally worked up the courage to continue it a few days later, and Toni Collette's reaction is exactly what I feared. I love this movie. Anything that can have that kind of impact on me is a masterpiece, and nothing has effected me quite like that. In fact, it's in my top 4 favorite horror movies along with The Thing, The Shining, and Jacob's Ladder (which is indeed a horror movie as well, despite some disagreeing with that). I've lost count of how many times I've re-watched Hereditary. Still noticing new things. In terms of great directors, I put Ari Aster up there with the best of them. And he's young, so I can't wait for all of his future endeavors.
The sub drum was, besides all the agony and pain in the plot, the thing that made me so uneasy. I really felt anxious as soon as I felt that sub drum. I’m glad I watched it with friends because I would never be able to finish watching it all by myself.
Hello. Something I have been in search for quite sometime is a connection with somebody that goes beyond vanity. It's very hard to do in this day and age. People can be, somewhat very superficial. On my quest to achieve this I have learnt a lot about human nature. It seems to me that those who are not given traits such as beauty or being wealthy are some of the nicest, kindest and generous people. While the "gorgeous" and well off seem to be the most arrogant and greedy people out there. Of course that's not to say there aren't beautiful kind people out there. I've been in the process of change for a while now and I have made some decent changes but don't you just hate it when people can't let go of your past mistakes. I saw your profile and it intrigued me. I wanted to learn more about who you are and what type of path you would like on in life. Can we talk?
Whatever he said he was trying to do , he nailed . This is a rare movie that stayed with me for quite some time after. Even now, my stomach twists if somebody says “ Want to watch Hereditary again?” A true masterpiece.
Oh, it’s so gratifying to hear him describe Millie’s participation in the project. She’s an adorable teenager who has had a career for nearly a decade already banking on the fact that she’s an adorable (and talented) kid. I love the fact (and it makes perfect sense) that she would relish the chance to be as creepy as humanly possible. And boy does she succeed. Sure the movie is dark and horrifying, but she’s a professional and she’s a smart young lady, she knows full well that it’s make-believe (for all intents and purposes).
Best horror movie I have ever seen. But I only ever hear him talk about "family." I wonder why he doesn't go into the supernatural horror of the Ars Goetia? And the elephant in the room, that was the allegiance and devastating architectures of this cult?
I wasn’t mentally well for the rest of the day after seeing the movie. Great work of film though. This and Midsommar will come down as classics in the next few decades.
+Sinjin Smyth What you just typed is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever read. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response, were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought.
+Sinjin Smyth Yeah, well at least those Americans that you speak of, while at the same time generalizing, have good taste in movies. Look, if you expected something different from Hereditary and it turned out to be the complete opposite, that's understandable and your criticism is valid. However, the fact that you called it a depression movie just because it portrays a family that's trying to cope with reality, you come off as an ignorant, close-minded judgemental troll.
I've watched thousands of movies in my life. Hereditary is the first film that gave me this horrible feeling that stayed with me for days. Yet i watched it again. Then swore never to re-watch it! Terrifying.
I want every person who flew off the rails and called this the worst movie ever to hear this interview. You can disagree with the fans, you can even say that the film is not for you, but if you claim that this movie is bad, then you are wrong. No film made with this much meaning, detail, and care is bad.
Its bad, very bad actually. What's scary is how these days horror films are overhyped and overrated, making them sound like its the next Godfather or something. Just like it happened with A quiet place, its all right,, entertaining, that's it, with a very bad script.
You need some education on cinematography. But people like you are the reason we get these garbage half-assed , jumpscare bullshit movies. Look past the 1st level of comprehension a movie offers you. The script is super rich when you start using your brain cells and question what you see.
People love to hate. You can't please everyone.I believe it's more gruesome and disturbing than scary. Some people just hate the genre and some are atheists who just think horror movies are for religious fanatics.I loved it and loved the slow pace of the movie. The ending seemed rushed and too much was happening like someone suddenly started driving at 100 mph.
@Deepa Lall whats does being an atheist as to do with anything ? lol . Its a psychological drama more than a gore movie, which to me is a lot more scarier.. felt the same for Shining and Possession.
So much of the horror comes from the family drama. I like thinking about the movie as “horrifying” rather than just “scary”. It builds such a sense of unease and discomfort without relying on cheap scares.
The impetus of the film as a raw family drama is so compelling. I would love to have seen the development of a family to chaos after a sudden death. I appreciate the darkness of it. How everyone grieves in a personal way. Some rise and some fall. I can’t watch this film unfortunately because I simply cannot handle this type of content. But I enjoyed learning about the film in this interview.
kisslena I went into this unprepared and I cannot handle that specific content either so I promptly left the theater after that scene for a moment to call my mom! And when i returned i had my hand up to shield any further instances !!!
Daphne Inish You are so brave⭐️ I applaud you for facing your fears and watching a disturbing movie. I don’t understand the reason people watch horror movies of the genre of demonic possession. My imagination is very sufficient to the task of seeing the unseen. I would love to see it. The staging of this “family drama” is so compelling! I get the premise completely. Up until the demonic possession. Themes of the family “under siege” and tearing apart due to a terrible secret is so interesting. I can handle dark psychological content. I can’t handle demonic possession stories, coming from a standpoint that it’s not a casual topic to be trifled with.
it's very hard for a director who has never shot a movie to find the funds for him, he had some compromises, so it seems to me at least, but it could have been a cult film but then he would not make alot of movie like david lynch, tarantino but it seems to me he want to make alot of movies and probably he would i take my hat of for ari who had gabriel byrne in his first motion picture in support role with toni collete in lead role
God of American Horror has spoken. I will be even more exciting if Aster has the power to turn any pop culture into masterpieces (like Nolan to Batman)
I wish there was a prequel to hereditary. How ellen becomes queen and how she tried to use her son as the vesael for pagan and how and why ellen's husband committed suicide. And then cut to ellen being pushed away from having any contact with peter the first born son of annie and when charlie is born cut to next scence where ellen is breast feeding her grandchild charlie cut scene zooming out of baby closeup sucking nipple as ellen slowly looks up to camera with an evil grin then black screen with director name.
I didn't think it was funny. It hit close to home because I saw it not long after losing my brother to suicide, and finding out that he had been living a sort of double life, similar to Annie's mother (and subsequently found he had quite a few demons, secrets that had shone themselves in ways over the years, but really only came to light only after he died) I was scared by it but also found it to be very cathartic, I own it and have seen it a couple of times now. It's hard to watch, haven't played it for awhile but love to hear discussion about the film. I don't like a lot of horror/slash films, but this is more of a psychological thriller so it appealed to me. Maybe it was funny in a way that a sick joke or gallows humor might be funny but not like a film that made me laugh out loud. Some people seem to think all horror films are funny, but sorry I guess I don't get the joke.
Hey Ari, please stay in the genre. Horror needs voices like you. Amazing film.
Agreed!
YES FRRRRRRRRR!!!!🙏🏽
Midsommar baby!!!
@@PYMGUS The teaser trailer for "Midsommar" was released yesterday. Can't wait until August 9th.
You're welcome!😄
he's doing one more horror film called Midsommar and then he's moving away from the genre for a while
me and the woman who hangs out in the corner of my ceiling thought the movie was really creepy
Sinjin Faull Skol!
Omg stop! Lol
Also, during the Dinner scene I literally leaned over to my friend and said "this is too real, man. I don't like it.". And I mean it in the best way.
@Sinjin Smyth siblings killing another sibling accidentally happens in real life since you are to stupid to understand , go see a Dr and get some pills for that dumb brain
I was looking for this comment, because yeah, that was painfully real.
Anyone who has experienced a family tragedy knows exactly how truly real that scene is.
Sinjin Smyth “ I AM YOUR MOTHER” very real
Yeah, of all the scenes, the dinner scene was the one that really upset me.
I am a jaded horror fan, and this flick shook me to my core. I cried twice and was completely freaked out by the end. I can't praise this film enough.
Glad I'm not the only one who cried.
Alien Noodle me too
hahajackson Which parts did you cry to?
Ken P What?😂 Really?
Ari Aster and Jordan Peele have arrived at a very interesting time in the horror genre. For the last decade, a vast majority of mainstream American horror films have been "family-moves-into-haunted-house". Both of these directors have offered fresh ideas and unsurprisingly people have gravitated towards that. These directors will be very important people in 20 years time when we look back.
And Robert Eggers
Joshua Fletcher Ari, Jordan and Robert are the future of horror
Yeah both Ari and Jordan are so cool they both have 2 horror films and it was awesome
Oh yeah, "family in a haunted house" doesn't sound like Hereditary at all, 🙄
Ari is leagues ahead of Jordan Peele
Aster is a towering, shining beacon of hope in the otherwise barren horror world. Hereditary was nothing short of a masterpiece, and undoubtedly my favourite horror movie. I can't wait for Midsommar.
Midsommar looks as if it’s going to one up Hereditary ; can’t wait to see it!!
Ari Aster (jewish) latest movie is anti-white propaganda, don't watch it.
mortiis469 it did one up it hereditary it’s so boring compared to midsommar

Ari Aster has lived with a stutter. He is a very nervous interviewee. Brilliant and socially awkward.
he is a stuttering stanley
more of a stammer than a stutter. nothing to fetishize, plenty of talented people who stutter, get nervous, talk smooth, get excited
He got it right with the "2nd screaming" Freudian slip on Midsommar

Sure the movie is dark and horrifying, but she’s a professional and she’s a smart young lady, she knows full well that it’s make-believe (for all intents and purposes).
Beautifully intricate horror. Please do more. I was riveted. Collette's performance was commanding.
herditary - i loved it it touched me like no other movie before ..the emotional rolercoaster was amazing
Then the supernatural obliterates you
Great interview!!! Amazing film.
Fantasic horror film I don’t get why people hate it so much
Psycho Xd People hate what they don't understand.
This belongs in the same category as rosemary's baby and the tenant (directed by roman polansky)
Because it's too real and they like fantasy.
I've watched thousands of movies in my life. Hereditary is the first film that gave me this horrible feeling that stayed with me for days. Yet i watched it again. Then swore never to re-watch it! Terrifying.
Since I watched hereditary, no other horror movie can compare
Ohhh that Carrie stare! Stays with you.
This guy's a great interviewer! I gotta find more Tom Power stuff.
It's all here! If you want to hear more interviews that we didn't shoot video for, you can head over to cbc.ca/q. Thanks so much for watching!
Fantastic interview ! Great job on the host !!
Hereditary was incredible. I liked midsommar too. Excited to see him next film.
you should watch his short film "The Strange Thing about the Johnsons"
22:44 totally nailed it
I want every person who flew off the rails and called this the worst movie ever to hear this interview. You can disagree with the fans, you can even say that the film is not for you, but if you claim that this movie is bad, then you are wrong. No film made with this much meaning, detail, and care is bad.
Colby Clanton Yeah, I felt happy to see something original for a change and actually was scary.
19:12 it’s hilarious because it’s like he’s describing exactly what everyone else went through after watching hereditary.
If you ever lost a loved one too early this movie gonna be trauma
Might be the best horror movie I have ever seen.
Hereditary is my all time list for sure. Best horror film since The Witch and It Follows.
I don't think it is in any way comparable to these movies.
this was one of the best horror films modern day
19:12 bro described midsommar
This movie operates as more than a “horror” movie. It’s a legitimately good movie, and can even work as a drama.
So much of the horror comes from the family drama. I like thinking about the movie as “horrifying” rather than just “scary”. It builds such a sense of unease and discomfort without relying on cheap scares.
brilliant dude. the world will know his true power when he makes a comedy
apparently he's working on a horror comedy which sounds perfect for him
The impetus of the film as a raw family drama is so compelling.
These movies don’t make me feel scared they make me feel uncomfortable
i'm love him
Interviews with talented people is what i love about ytube.
I kept breathing very quite during this movie..very tense!!
Amazing film
This guy inspires me to be a horror writer honestly
This man and Robert eggers are saving the horror genre.
Time to do another one for Midsommar
i love me some horror Drama i mean have you people seen The Babadook and The Witch!!
David Ortega The Witch was my favorite modern horror film until Hereditary.
Theyre pretty close but i like darker cinematography i get from The Witch more than the brighter from hereditary
The Witch is great, The Babadook is trash
Yes seen ThevBabobook and The VVITCH. They were great too. Think The Hereditary is scarier
@@davidortega3825 I agree. The old English made it creepy too. I think the witch is creepy. The Hereditary is frightening too
The head banging scene was pretty traumatizing lol 🎉
God of American Horror has spoken.
I will be even more exciting if Aster has the power to turn any pop culture into masterpieces (like Nolan to Batman)
5:05
Are those Sure SM81 condenser microphones?
This movie haunts you.
ARI ASTER IS SOOOO HOT OMG OMG MY NEW DIRECTOR CRUSH
Lol?
Was he hinting to that scene in Midsommar he had planned during this interview XD
“Is it a horror movie?”
Are you kidding?
I wish there was a prequel to hereditary. How ellen becomes queen and how she tried to use her son as the vesael for pagan and how and why ellen's husband committed suicide. And then cut to ellen being pushed away from having any contact with peter the first born son of annie and when charlie is born cut to next scence where ellen is breast feeding her grandchild charlie cut scene zooming out of baby closeup sucking nipple as ellen slowly looks up to camera with an evil grin then black screen with director name.
Hereditary, Midsommar, and Strange Things About the Johnsons; I will watch anything Ari does.
14:33 you hear that? :)
I'm wondering if Ari would consider a werewolf film- providing he takes his notes from John Landis's An American Werewolf In London...
The host man, his name is Tom Power.
So he does admit that it was a comedy!
