  • In this masterclass, #AriAster tells Anupama Chopra about making the horror films, #Hereditary & #Midsommar and why he sometimes ‘feels guilty for even being alive.’ The filmmaker shares insight about his writing process, what excites him about ‘grotesque’ filmmaking and the possibility of making a film in India.

      It’s not too terrible. But this audio could definitely be cleaned up. Maybe hiring an audio pro could up the production value if you haven’t already. Thanks for the great content!

    What I like about his style is that there are no jump scares and conventional horror elements in his movies but it’s the whole setup which keeps you in a constant horror.

      @serge791 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@anandkumar7599 Well you should've expected it. If you do more research you would understand. He was going through a breakup so he wanted to get this off his back by making this into a cathartic cataclysmic film. He also said he wanted it to be lush but at the end overripe. This is a cathartic, surrealist film. So you should've expected that.

    Ari Aster is my shepherd; I shall not want.
    He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
    He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
    Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
    Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
    Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in his movies for ever.

    It's a good interview but it could've been better. I think you should've done little bit more homework Anupama because the whole thing felt unplanned. May be you should discuss with your team and decide questions to ask before interviewing a great craftsman like Ari Aster because we don't often get to watch interviews like this in Indian media. Also you could've get a little deeper into the technical aspects of Ari Aster's films. Anyways it's good content and I hope you guys would keep up the good work.

    Anupama and other interviewers in India need to stop asking cringworthy unrelated questions to foreign actors or directors."If we open your head what will we find?"that is a completely absurd question without any particular context.You can see he is a nervous talker and heistated to answer

    • @larsonseq9269
      @larsonseq9269 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think that question to start with was fine but sticking on to asking questions just relating to the disturbing aspects of his films and acting like that's his trademark and rarely touching on actual filmmaking questions was kinda cringy

    • @pamzaluikham3916
      @pamzaluikham3916 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that was the ice breaker, interviewer asking random silly questions to get the interviewee at ease. Usually those kind of questions are the one that may be fun or back fire resulting in cringe worthy moments depending on the interviewee.

  • @queerfish6984

    Anupama asking him if he ever considered he was pushing things too far with Midsommar and Hereditary is the second I knew she hadn't done her research because Ari Aster's short 'The Strange Thing About the Johnsons' is truly one of the psychologically scarring and disturbing films about r@pe

  • @aliceb2849
    @aliceb2849 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That interviewer is so bad. "is there more to you r movies than grotesque images?" OBVIOUSLY. He puts so much thought, depth, consideration and story into his movies, and she negates all of that with that question.

  • @vikrantchatterjee1871

    Watched hereditary, he sure is a modern great and will be an all time great. I have become a fan, I mean take hereditary it will give you creeps without much of jump scares. The catharsis is burdening and knock your vulnerable side if you watch a film and not see it.

    I would happily ignore bad sound that was by the virtue of a nincompoop intern, because the interview itself is such a wastage of a golden opportunity.
    The questions that could have been asked -----> about the research that went into creating hargan commune, about the runic language and the murals on the wall (most of which were drawn by ari himself), about shooting midsommar in such bright light, about the awesome ost in his films, about hereditary (toni) being snubbed at the academy , about pitching his films and convincing a studio to make it, about his next project, about indian films he has seen ( he recently tweeted about jalikattu )
    INSTEAD she wants to whine about how she was disturbed by his films completely ignoring the artistic brilliance his movies have including the shortfilms he has made.
    Film companion came with a titanic hope for film enthusiasts , seems now it is destined towards its prophetic destiny - THE SINKING SHIP!

      I was present at the interview and I totally agree with you. When the audience members were given the chance to ask their questions, they proliferated it by asking dumb questions like, 'what are your favourite films ? ', ' how do you sleep at night thinking others won't be able to sleep?'. A few questions you've posted were asked. But apart from these few wise people, it was a complete waste of opportunity.
