- For our latest Film Comment Free Talk, we head into the belly of the beast: Ari Aster’s terrific upcoming twist on the horror genre, Hereditary. If at times Hereditary feels more like an askew domestic melodrama than a horror movie, that’s not accidental: Aster’s new film is one of the most effective examples of the genre in recent years, terrifying in its refusal to shy away from difficult emotions. The filmmaker, a cinephile who counts Mike Leigh as one of his influences, sat down with Film Society Editorial Director and Film Comment columnist Michael Koresky to discuss how exactly he mixes the mysteries and traumas of dysfunctional families with his exquisitely controlled and cathartic filmmaking. A talent (and a film) not to be missed this summer!

I’ve only seen Hereditary, Midsommar, Beau is Afraid, and Strange Thing about the Johnsons, but my conclusion is that Ari Aster’s goal is to create scenarios where it would literally be better to be dead than still in that scenario. Each film has its own tone and way of getting to that point, but let’s just say he’s VERY into family-based trauma.
God he’s so right though, the pacing of Hereditary is so integral to the movie. Would have loved to see the 3hr footage anyway

Ari Aster is a genius. I'm not even that much of a movie fan, but I find myself hanging on his every word and wanting to watch all the films he references. I think it takes great strength and courage to face the horrific parts of life. In that way, it's very life-affirming to watch a horror film, because it's like you're accepting a dare to look and not flinch.

Ari Aster gets major points for talking about "Return to Oz". Hereditary was a genuinely intriguing, impressive, original and finely constructed work. Look forward to more from him.
"The Wiz" is scary as all hell.
What I love about that dinner scene is Annie's complaint of no one taking any responsibility applying to her directly. She speaks about her life and history as if it belongs to someone else. She is always distanced, even in her approach to miniatures.
The corpses and Gore look so real and life-like in his movies
The rapport between these two is unreal.
The director of two of the most brilliantly devastating horror movies I've ever seen being such an awkward nerd is just perfect.
Ari Aster is such a refreshing addition to the horror genre.
Wow! The Baby of Macon’s play on pageantry, theatre, and audience complicity in watching/participating in the horror is also present in Midsommar. I had no idea that it was not available in the USA. In have also watched those Iconic films discussed, plus I recommend Blue Velvet, and The Innocents (adaptation of The Turn Of The Screw).
Return to OZ is so insanely disturbing, if you saw it as a child this movie stays with you its so freaky!

I'm a big time horror fan and Hereditary is my 3rd favorite horror film after The Thing and The Shining.

Wow, so interesting to hear about Aster's childhood shared cinema experiences with his mother, to which I can relate incredibly hard! Truly, I was exposed to the in-depth classics of cinema from a very early age by my late mother, including silent b&w films, Dr. Kaligari, all that jazz, and on the regular basis, too! (I guess the second blessing was an immortal "Museum of Cinema" in our homecity). My all-time favorite childhood film was Kurosawa's "Kagemusha" when I was 10! (And I saw it at least a dozen times on a large screen).

There aren’t many human dramas I can only stomach once. In fact, I think there’s only one and that’s his Johnson’s short. Just thinking about it makes my stomach turn. This man is a genius.
I find that almost too comedic it’s a great idea and disturbing but I find some weird comedy element in it I don’t know why ?? Maybe I find it ridiculous even tho I understand completely he’s thinking behind it I can’t seem to take it seriously
We finally get to see a genius work a horror film. Ari is up there with Kubrick.. Argento..Blatty.. Hooper.. my all time favorites

American God of Horror has spoken.
The music on this film which sets up a lot of the suspense, owes a lot to The Shining by its way of pacing and setting up the scenes.
All A24 horror film use music the same way that "The Shining" did. I couldn't have bigger praise for these movies.

Seems extremely normal here... you can tell he is pretty shy and he tends to point out he gets tired of repeating himself and always imagines the people in the audience who hate everything he is saying and disliked his movies lol. I like how grounded, yet insecure he comes off. Its refreshing,

In one word, Ari Aster is brilliant.
Wish the volume level was higher...can barely hear this at times; and it get worse as it goes on.
I wish there was a prequel to hereditary. How ellen becomes queen and how she tried to use her son as the vesael for pagan and how and why ellen's husband committed suicide. And then cut to ellen being pushed away from having any contact with peter the first born son of annie and when charlie is born cut to next scence where ellen is breast feeding her grandchild charlie cut scene zooming out of baby closeup sucking nipple as ellen slowly looks up to camera with an evil grin then black screen with director name.
That would be awesome.. I know he wrote a lot of backstory that didn’t even make it into the script.. however I don’t think he would ever do this, it’s more of a standalone piece

Now that is something I would LOVE to see.
Really good movie. You should check out "Witching and bitching" its Spanish subtitles but it's really good. So I get it's Paimon at the end but why do they call him Charlie? Saying they got her a better body? Then the head is on a pike that they're worshiping?
I love Aster's work, but I think he's wrong about George Romero. Both Martin and NOLD are aesthetically dynamic in my opinion.

Why would someone go to this if you haven’t seen the movie
Forget about Denis Villeneuve, Chris Nolan .. this guy is the real deal, not some pseudo intellectual one-note visual style pretender. Ari's movies really makes me carry that mood like a dark cloud over my head long after the movie is over, it feels like an amped up version of real life, he makes the kind of heavy lifting horror no one makes anymore (The Exorcist) ... just stop the James Wan factory churn outs already ..

I think "HEREDITARY" is nothing but 3:17m short of a master-piece ! Why 3:17 minutes, you ask ? That's the lenght of "CLOUDS" as sung by Judy Collins, that closes this otherwise perfect movie - much of which (or witch) rests on the very competent shoulders of Toni Collette ; over and over in my head (which I haven't lost yet, no thanks to the movie), I've tried to make sense of the insertion of that otherwise beautiful song at the very end of that beautifully-dreadful movie... but to no avail ; let's say it's what the director wanted and that's that ! But still, I think he should've listened to Joni Mitchell's "CLOUDS" before making his final choice ; Judy Collins' 1967 cover sounds muffled and dusty, while Mitchell's (original) version, re-released in 1969 on REPRISE records, sounds crisp and truly stereo, as if recorded recently ; now there are songs on that LP that might, I say might, have made more sense for the movie's awkward ending ; for instance "THE FIDDLE AND THE DRUM" ; Mitchell's alluring voice has even chilling "over-tones", as they say, in the business ; but it is the way she plucks at the guitar that draws the most attention ; even the album's cover, a Joni Mitchell self-portrait (yes, she also paints), is premonitious : she somehow looks like Toni Collette... and get this : Joni and Toni (LOL) Is it too late to re-release the movie with Joni's song dubbed on ? Oh, but ask Joni's permission first... I've read she wasn't too keen about Collins' rendition (LOL) !

I find the avoidance of the key element of the film being in the occult ODD. the family dynamic is the result of the dark art and cult manipulations. why is this not being addressed????
I think it's because the film is based around the manipulations of Ellen and the cult and that would be a bit of a spoiler. I've seen a lot of people who have seen the movie didn't really enjoy it as much as they thought they could have because before they watched it, they heard that it had cult business going on in it.
You are the first people to mention this i've seen. I always wonder the same... both hereditary and midsommar are about blood magic and life-stealing powers channeled through manipulation... nobody seems to adress it and it makes it way creepier when you compare the movies and the interviews.

@@mhd1442 He doesn't have a stutter. He proves this by speaking at length during most of the interview. What he has is an annoying habit of repeating the first word of a sentence as means of buying time to respond. It's a habit you can change.

I just watched it and besides the easter eggs didn't really see the Sixth Sense influence.

I'm pretty sure the creepy, smiling guy at the funeral was inspired by the creepy, smiling hearse-driver in Burnt Offerings. Midsommar in some ways reminds me of a less campy version of 2001 Maniacs.
