Wow. This is one of the first times I’ve ever seen a BTS for a film, much less a horror film that I really liked. It’s amazing how much work goes into it. The acting especially... **Spoiler** when Annie breaks down upon discovering Charlie’s death... to put oneself in that excruciatingly painful mode-and make it viscerally convincing-has got to be an extremely difficult task for an actor. Thanks for sharing!
Hate to tell you this; but witchcraft and demon conjuration/evocation it's a very real danger, and yeah, anyone involved in those wicked practices are just as disgusting as the degenerates of the coven depicted in the film, there is not a safe or good way to do this, there is no reason for us to deal with those entities, and yeah, they might kill you or drive you crazy, that's very true
They build a set to make the house exactly like the little model that the mom uses, and to make shots like the first (or one of the first) when they zoom in the miniature peter's room and became the real one :o
The movie starts slow but exponentially gets crazier and crazier and the amount of tension you feel watching some parts is second to non. There is a part about 35% in where there is so much anticipation and tension that for 20 seconds you are literally mentally hijacked by the movie. It's hard to describe but if you see the film you know excactly what I'm talking about.
stuna101a that’s a really good way to explain it, i remember in theaters at the scene with Peter not looking in the mirror after the accident literally made me feel outside of my body with anxiety and fear , i haven’t had a movie flip me out like that before in a long time, that’s how you know he’s a talent , also anyone notice the set looking like a big dollhouse ? I know that’s reaching but it’s just cool to me
@@benconnor3206 it's not reaching, it's totally designed like a dollhouse. the intention of that is to show how the characters are dolls being manipulated/etc
eyy ey I thought the miniatures were very uninspired and did nothing for the film. I don’t think there is any metaphor that the miniatures are supposed to represent, just a device that was used to deliver exposition and the foreshadowing of some events.
megaatomicmuffin ehhhh I disagree. The way the miniatures were used was shown with how the mother liked to base them around scenes of her life. She would be able to manipulate the miniatures to how she saw fit & in her own vision (recreating her daughter's death, turning the miniature of her mother coming into her room away because she didn't want to look at it, etc.) It was a metaphor of how the supernatural/demonic presence was acting as "outside forces," manipulating the family to act in ways that caused them to destroy themselves (making the mother think that she would burn if she burnt the book, having joanne get her involved in the seances, making her "sleepwalk" to reinforce the distrust between her & her son, etc.) It was representing them not having any control of the situations happening to them. They were literally like dolls being played with.
According to Graham, that's meant as "a potent metaphor for the family's situation." He told The Washington Post: "They have no agency, and they're revealed over the course of the movie to be like dolls in a dollhouse, being manipulated by these outside forces."
megaatomicmuffin it’s 100% effective. The first shot of the movie shows the treehouse - this representation and then pans over to the dollhouse and who do we see first. Peter. Who is manipulated by a unstoppable outside force into hosting a demon.
this is nowhere near close to the best horror film ever. it's a mishmash of tropes we've seen before. how can anything that relies so heavily on others' work be considered the greatest ever? it's very well made but it's unoriginal
ZombieZifiction I honestly havent seen another horror movie like this one. I agree with u that we've seen these scares before but...I think its the best because of the way the filmakers executed the storytelling and how the viewer becomes attached and sympathetic to the family. But thats just my opinion.
3:26 it's so nice to see a open conversation between actor and director. They are really planning the scene together and look like they're enjoying it.
Wolf and Aster are both fully committed to the art of story telling. It’s more than money to the both of them. Fantastic pairing. Excited to see what Ari gets out Joaquin phoenix in his next project :)
Yeah it amazes me how human Aster is, and how he treats cast and everyone. Because you know…. with this level of delivery he could be full on Stanley Kubrick psycho, and nobody would care
Watching how this movie was made only confirms my belief that I could never act. I'd be too conscious of all the behind-the-scenes stuff happening around me. Collette is AMAZING. She deserves all the awards come next award season. Seriously.
Incredible film. Really bends the rules of horror and had me in shock by the end. Toni Collette gave a performance that hopefully will be remembered Oscar time.
I saw this film like 4 days ago and Im still here, trying to understand what was inside it that made me felt so sick. I've been unable to sleep until 6 AM since then. First I loved it, now I kinda hate it because I'm still in pain.
Yeah especially the tragedy, pain and agony the family exoerienced the whole of their lifetime. Especially that Annie tried to aborted his son, and the worst relationship between them. Also Charlie, where was her original soul at the first place? When she was born? In hell? And I can't imagine Paimon took her body right away.
Omg I feel the same way. I'm glad I'm not the only one. It's weird I've seen so many scary movies and I love them but I watched this movie last night and felt my chest was in pain and anxiety today. I couldn't sleep last night. I was jumpy as if I had ptsd or was traumatized by it. No horror movie has ever made me feel this way.
Same here. The shots of Charlie’s decapitated head (both the ants scene and the statue scene) freaked me out the worst. The first one because they really lingered in that shot, letting the audience take it all in, it turned my stomach yet I couldn’t look away, the the second scene because it was so surreal and fucked up like I couldn’t even tell if I was in a nightmare or not. I think the movie triggered our deepest fears without cheap jumpscares, and the acting was so convincing because tbh I’d expect people to react like that in real life, which makes the movie much more believable
Realy ... I dont get it. I tought this movie is a joke and not scary at all. The hype was to big. And i Tought Charlie had a big role in it. It was so disapointing for me. I like the Conjuring movies and The Nun was great to. The Shining and The Exorcist. I love the 90s horror to and the 80s
This is raw horror. Not any zombies or demons but grief. That’s what makes it horror. To be in the mind of a grieving family in a horror movie makes it 10 times scarier.
It gives me chills to see Toni Collette when she wasn’t filming because she even stays in character when the cameras aren’t rolling. She was so dedicated to this role, it’s insane.
I just watched an interview with her where she said she did NOT stay in character for this movie because it would have been way too exhausting for her.
@@saviorofthedreamingdead same, just finished it, I'm here 1am wide awake with lights on watching this to calm TF down this was utterly horrifying in the best way
There are other great horror films released too you know. Idk about Jordan Peel saving horror , "US" was a mediocre followup to "Get Out" while "Midsommar" was still good.

This horror filmed had only 4 deaths compared to other horror films but its billion times scarier than 90% of the films that I've ever watched oh god
This movie was incredible
I have to be here to be reminded it’s just a movie.
Ari Aster really did a beautiful job, im obsessed with his movies.
WE GOT THE BOUNCEEE
i’m a big scary movie girl okay but this is unlike anything i’ve ever seen. it is genuinely horrifying and i haven’t been able to watch it sense the first time two years ago. for months after i watched it i just felt so sick and depressed and on edge. the pain you will come to feel for the family is unreal yet it feels so real. the actors make everything feel and look so real, which is a part of what fucks you in the head. it’s a mindfuck and i’m being truly serious when i say you should really think about it before you just go and watch it. it’ll change you.
Who hurt u Ari Aster?
Idk he seems chill
lmfao
First time feature. Damn. the confidence.
I just watched this film for the first time and omg I haven't been this scared of a film in a very long time. Prob one of the scariest films I've ever seen
Hereditary was so freakishly good I loved it
