    I did my starter without taking out coolant bridge, actually wasn't too bad, if you get a long enough ratchet and a deep well socket you just use your finger to place it ontop of the bolt head its a breeze. Took me 4-5 hours and that was including dropping the ratchet ontop of the transmission and looking for it for a little over an hour.

      Don't worry about how hard to replace the starter. I owned numerous Lexuses, 2012 IS250, 2001 and 2006 GS300, 2015 LS460 and now 2006 SC430 and never experience replacing or repairing starter. Starter actually will last forever but of course it will eventually will break in a certain period of time but definitely will last if not for decades or it might last the lifetime of the car, just like my 2001 GS300 that already have 357,000 miles on it but starter still in good condition. As you can see in the video, starter was removed not because the wear and tear of the starter but it broke because of the driver's error. The gears were damaged because the engine already running and someone attempted to restart it again, what do you think will happen to the starter of course gears will break and not only starter's gears but also the fly wheel's gears will break as well.

    • @deimosphob

      Yeah, and mine was done once at 80k, and needed to be replaced again at 130k. Tbh wasn't too bad, the UR engines are way worse having to remove the exhaust manifold to get that starter out. Ntm the valley leaks like crazy on those and the direct injectors crack, and to fix that leak you need to pull the whole front timing cover due to one pipe. Definitely prefer the UZ's out of most V engines from Toyota, the inline Toyota engines are best for serviceability tho.

  • @marcop3517
    @marcop3517 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    The valley location of the UZ motor is a total breeze to change and far from the worst. Had plenty of practise removing the upper and lower manifold - the ACIS VSV sitting in the valley is a common fault on these too. First time years ago was maybe 4 hours turn around time and now down to 1-2 hours start to finish after a few tries figuring out what works best.
    Anyway - these UZ series engines were replaced by the UR series engine (i.e. LS460) and the starter motor is not in the valley any longer and a total prick to replace - RHS exhaust manifold and engine mount to be removed first for access and all from under the car. Take the UZ motor over the later UR engine anyday for doing this job.

      You already know! The ISF is even tighter. I would remove the subframe for more access! But even those with repetition become easier over time! Thanks for watching!

    Wow! I assume the teeth damage was maybe caused by that bad bearing on the starter's shaft. Wobbling and incorrect engagement of the teeth. Any chance you remember the mileage of this LS, or a typical mileage that these starters start to kick the bucket at? This looks like a straightforward job, but I'm still not looking forward to the day that my LS430 leaves me stranded... you can't even get to the starter to give it a couple whacks in an emergency situation.

    • @harborareatech310
      @harborareatech310  27 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @surfordie82 I assume that's why the flex plate teeth wore out as well. I don't exactly remember the mileage on this vehicle, but I know for sure the OE starters last longer than them all.

      @@harborareatech310 Thanks dude! Got 115k on my LS and its from a super mild climate (San Diego!). I've had OE starters from lesser Toyota models last well over 150k miles, so I've probably got at least a few more years to go. Idk what they do that makes OE starters last so long, its definitely some voodoo magic.

    Just finished getting the manifold back on. Fellas, this is a hard fucking project and be prepared for a royal pain in the ass. Getting that manifold back on is a two man job and you WILL scratch the shit out of the intake manifold unless you are ridiculously careful, it's basically impossible to not.

    If it is the starter making a grinding noise on start-up, I think I'll just trade the car in on something smaller and newer.
    If the guy said it's a $2800 job to do, and I won't do it myself, I don't think the car's worth it to repair. Maybe just drive it until it dies.
