BELGRADE, SERBIA 🇷🇸 A HIGHLIGHT of any BALKAN TOUR!

  • Finally, a chance to explore Belgrade!
    For the first two days, the weather in Belgrade did not cooperate, so as we stayed in malls on the first day, and escaped to Novi Sad on the second day, we finally got a sunny day on the third day there! The first destination was the Church of Saint Sava which was about 2 miles from our apartment. 1:07
    From Saint Sava’s Church, we had read about Skadarlija in a few places and decided that that would be a good area in which for us to have some lunch. 3:17
    Lunch was a stop at Casa Nova, which was a highly rated restaurant in Belgrade on Trip Advisor. It was outstanding, and did not cost much, considering all that we ordered. 4:45
    After lunch we went back to the apartment and from there headed to Kalamegdan to see the sunset from the fortress. On the way there, we stumbled upon a dinosaur park and a persistent insect. 7:40
    Lastly we went back to the promenade for dinner where we chose “Cantina de Frida” for some Mexican food. 12:06
    The next day was our COVID test. Stay tuned for that!
    When we decided to take a month to travel, there were few options for Americans due to the current health situation. Serbia was one of those options, and as my research continued, Belgrade is on every list of places to see in Serbia as the capital of the country.
    This is part twelve in a series that started with flying from London, so if you missed part one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten or eleven, be sure to check them out! And as always, thank you for watching!!!

    The fortress is much older than what you mentioned. It was first settled by the celts and then it was a roman border town, then it swapped hands between the byzantine empire, hungarian kingdom and medieval serbia during the middle ages. The outer brick walls you saw coming in are 18th cenutry austrian/ottoman. The next greyish walls are 16th/17th century. You didn't visit the oldest part but the oldest core is towers from the early 15th century. The victor monument was built after WW1 to commemorate the victory over Austria-Hungary. Historian here btw :D

      Hey there! I am getting a lot of feedback for this and rightly so--my mistake. I was referencing the start of the Kalamegdan Park accidentally and attached it to the fortress. That says, the fortress is so much older than it looks. The Fortress in Belgrade and the one in Novi Sad have been upkept so beautifully by the government!

      @colinafobe2152 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      the Victor was planned as monument to symbolize victory over Ottomans during the First Balkan War, but WW 1 happened before its completion. After the war the Victor was erected as a symbol to victory and liberation from both empires, Ottoman and Austria-Hungary

    Hello, its Aleksa from the Airbnb you stayed in, really liked the video and i hope you guys had a nice time And some fun, you are welcome anytime. 😄 p.s. A little correction about the fortress, it was built much earlier, some roman camps were there even in bc, as in the fortress that it is, it dates to the 14.-15.century.

    • @MrNonrev
      @MrNonrev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Aleksa, you're absolutely right. I was reading for the date of the Kalamegdan Park, but the date that you reference for the fortress is correct. :--) Thanks for everything--your place is in the most perfect location in the city! I have placed a link in the video description if anyone would like to stay there--the location cannot be beaten. Hope you're well, man!

    Not just a regular monk, he was the brother of the first king of Serbia, Stefan the Firstcrowned. He rejected a life of luxury and wealth to live a humble spiritual life and he founded the Serbian Orthodox Church. He was buried in a monastery, but the Turks took his remains and burned them on the hill that the temple is located on today after an uprising.
    Btw the pronunciation is Ska-dar-lee-ya :)
    And that green insect is a stink bug, don’t scare it or it will release an unpleasant smell.

      Thank you so much for the information! I really need to get more info before I head to these sites, and I recognize that now, but hey I am not so far into this... :-). Skadarlija was amazing, and the food was awesome! The big did not release any smell, but I guess we let it tag along for the filming! :-)

    for long time of the existence of that fortress, Sava-Danube was a border between tribes, monarchies, empires. From Celts, Romans, Dacians, Slavs, Hungarians, Turks, Ottomans... Just imagine that view, big rivers, flooded forests and marshes behind. No New Belgrade, no settlements north of Danube... Just Zemun town in distance behind wilderness (and similar view from Zemun towards Belgrade-Kalemegdan. End of the huge plain and start of mountainous Balkans)

      You are 100% correct. Aleksa corrected me first--the 1869 is the Park, not the fortress. I was matching the dates up incorrectly. The older date makes the condition of the Fortress even more remarkable. Thanks for the insight!

    Have you been inside St. Sava Temple? It looks gorgeous.
    Saint Sava was a Serbian prince and Orthodox monk, the first Archbishop of the autocephalous Serbian Church, the founder of Serbian law, and a diplomat.
    The Church of Saint Sava is built where the Ottomans burnt his remains in 1594. during an uprising.
    Skadarlija (Skadarska street) you pronounce with quit J as Ska-dar-leea.
    Belgrade Fortress Kalemegdan is the core and the oldest section of the urban area of Belgrade.
    The first mention of the city is when it was founded in the 3rd century BC as "Singidunum" by the Celtic tribe of Scordisci, who had defeated Thracian and Dacian tribes that previously lived in and around the fort.

    It's still strange that still 99 % of the tourist videos showing Belgrade is like max 1,5 kilometers from city center in old part of Belgrade.
    Belgrade is so much bigger than that and has the whole New Belgrade to explore and also surrounding areas.
    But in the other hand, videos i watch from other cities in Europe is similar. Tourists are just filming around the close center area. 🤔😎

It is near the Zoo in Belgrade. Especially when it is a shiny day, you can chill there and take a Drink and have some snacks!
