I made sarma with grape leaves (from a jar) last weekend. I don't do yoghurt on them like mom does, prefer squeezing lemon for a nice sour taste. So good!
I am always thrilled to see that foreingers like our food because it is very important part od our culture. I really enjoy watching you. Thank you for representing our country in such a beautiful manner.
Most restaurants in Skadarlija have top quality food, but for the average salary in Serbia it is expensive. Mostly tourists come here. I advise you that if you want to try some more traditional Serbian dishes, you go to a restaurant "?" (question mark) for example gibanica, proja, zeljanica, sarmica od zelja sa kiselim mlekom, podvarak etc

Hi Chris you should come to Belgrade during summertime when it’s warm even spring and autumn are nice. Winter 🥶 is quite cold and depressing but rakija and a nice woman helps getting warm during winter😂 the weather starts getting better in March. Buy the way I live in Sweden 🇸🇪 where winter is even colder🥶 and longer then in Serbia 🇷🇸.
8:34 , actually its the other way around, we are reheating sarma again and again because its made in large quantities, so we say that each time sarma is reheated its better! Same ass beans stew! 😁
Man you're getting better and better! Your videos are so good, with a lot of positive vibe. You are relaxed and funny. And you're keeping on with the great content. 👍 You stayed in one of the most famous restaurants in Belgrade.👍 Regarding sarma, I used to eat it with the sour cream and mashed potato. 😋
Hi l am Serbian, living in the UK last 32 years. I never made sarma, but my husband who is English love it. My mum always make sarma when we visit, she use only pork meet, and we eat this with pavlaka which is like cream fresh, only better. My mum also make this with a smocked dried peaceses of pork meet on the top so the whole dish have a smocky flavour, delicious.

My mom used to make musaka - a ground beef and potato layered dish in the oven and she put milk - no egglplant as Serbs don''t use a lot of egglplant. Anyway today I make it vegan style :)
Lol, its always fun and adorable watching you trying Serbian food, ur reactions are priceless 😂 Anyway, for me Sarma is winter food(in my oppinion) no matter we Serbs eating it during whole year. Also, u have summer version(again in my oppinion) and that is "Punjena paprika" (stuffed pepper). Like, sour cabage(Sarma cabage) is mostly thing Serbjans prepare during autumn and winter, paprika is a summer vegitable, so it need to be fresh for Punjena paprika. But, lucky, u can find both meals during any season here in Serbia 😁
In my region we have sarma with "kisela pavlaka" without bread and with bacon (very small pieces) are together with rice and meat inside every piece of sarma (not outside like in this restaurant). Every region or home has little bit different sarma receipe and little bit indenpendent taste. Anyway the best sarma is next day (1-2 days old) and cold sarma especially at night after alko party is very good for recovery :-)))) Prijatno.
I'm making Sarma today for the first time for my Bosnian husband. I hope it's as good as the one you had in Serbia. My husband and I absolutely Love your videos! Keep on keeping on! 😁✌

When will you come to Novi Sad again? I was watching your videos from Petrovaradin fortress and your trip to Sremski Karlovci and you were so impressed with our culture and people here. I am so happy to hear it from some ,,tourist" because it is so sweet!❤
Sarma is one of the greatest dishes and as you say so rich in flavour. Thanks for visiting Serbian and also vlogging about it. It is not as western media says Serbia is like. 😁 we’re peaceful and likes to talk with other people
It is the other way around. Sarma is actually better when heated up later. The more times it is re-heated the better it gets. Ćevapi are better if they are eaten immediately. Enjoy. :) Varieties of sarma: - With green leaves instead of cabbage. Available only in late spring and early summer. - With wine leaves. Hard to find, as it requires wine leaves to be very young. Similar dishes: - "Punjene paprike" - stuffed peppers (similar stuffing of minced meat and rice as in sarma). There are two kinds: stuffed fresh peppers and stuffed dried peppers (sometimes stuffed with minced meat and walnuts). - "Punjene tikvice" - stuffed zucchini (again, similar stuffing as in sarma).
Hi Chris :) I would suggest to you that when you ask people, especially in Serbia, or if you visit some of the other Balkan countries, what food to eat, ask them what drink goes with it because it is very common that some kind of foods goes with certain drinks. That is the case with the sarma, it is the best to eat it drinking some very good red wine and in Serbia there are many wonderful wine brands. As a meal, the sarma is usually greasy and the wine helps to dissolve the greasiness. To eat this kind of sarma and drink only a glass of water is like doing desecration of the meal. Also, there is other kind of sarma, which is made in the same way and shape, but only with rice and leek which some people eat during the Christmas Lent, a period of 5-6 weeks before Christmas.
Its soft because its not made from regular fresh cabbage, but from kiseli kupus (can be translated as sour cabbage maybe and its actually a cabbage that has been treated weeks prior making sarma) You should also try posna sarma which is a vegan kind eaten here during fasting 👌 And for regular sarma, i like it the best with some sour cream on top, its a perfect combination 😍
Sarma is acctualy a dish that is becomes tastier by every reeheat 😉 I reccomend you to try wedding cabbage (svadbarski kupus), it's hardcore dish wirh even richer taste than sarma. I'm not sure that you will find it in Belgrade restaurants, but try.
Sarma goes well with sour cream or sour milk. Some people like to cut the sarma into tiny bits and mix it but I personally think that interferes with the flavour of the sarma itself.I put the sour cream next to the sarma in the plate and put some pepper over everything.Hope my advice helped!
Soooo as a romanian i am extremely triggered because we have "sarmale" in Romania which is the same thing but made with: pickled cabbage , minced meat , rice , minced onion etc.. and you eat it with sour cream and corn bread "mamaliga" :)) hope you will go to Romania and give it a try ! 👌

Sucks that you're visiting in the winter and that COVID is still alive and kickin'... if you're ever back during the spring to fall seasons, you should check out Serbia further outwards and visit all the different meat festivals, the trumpet festival, try the different cheeses, smell the peppers roasting for ajvar, see the village of Donja Lokosnica turn crimson from all the peppers hanging and drying on the walls of the houses. I noticed you didn't try any wine, Serbia's known for over 400 wineries - check one out! Also, If you have the time check out the Golubac fortress and take the old train in Mokra Gora and visit Emir Kusturica's Drvengrad you probably won't be disappointed - Johnny Depp visited amongst many others!
Once in the 80-is rock band Motorhead was in Beograd and that eat so much sarma and get diaries. They eat without bread because that was so tasty. Always eat sarma with bread 😉🍞
@@Travelwithchris I might tickle your imagination a bit now, but the Sarma dish you previously ate - can be improved tenfold! Basically, this sort of a dish becomes better with additional slow cooking...Virtually, the longer it gets heated up, better it becomes. In fact, the actual Sarma dish usually is left overnight in the oven on a low heat a day before Slava or Wedding starts, thus making it extremely tender and juicy for the lunch whilst keeping it warm. To shed some more light on this, if you're willing to take a read: Repeating this over the course of three days (the usual/typical Slava festivity time in Serbia, per family) results in something that'd make your taste buds explode with flavor. Sarma definitely is the ultimate comfort food in Serbia, and it is prepared way differently to that of Turkish Sarma that comes rolled in wine leaf and, obviously, without pork. People might be oblivious to that particular fact, but the food you eat in the Balkans did emerge in the Balkans, and it is authentic for the region. You'd have a very hard time finding Sarma you eat here anywhere near Turkey. Cevapi & Pljeskavica fit that role, too. Burek, however, is one of the things that definitely was influenced by the Ottoman empire in both preparation and taste. Other dishes only share names and preparation to some extent. Ingredients are rather different. If you get an invitation for St. Nikola, be sure to take it It is the Slava that falls on fasting days, so there should be fish instead of pork : ) Custom is to bring a wine, maybe a chocolate or two.
How we eat Sarma? With bread, even tho it contains rice it's too fatty/rich you need the bread to douse it down. Also, sarma is one of the very few meals out there that tastes even better when heated up. So don't worry, leftovers in the fridge and reheat (we tend to say re - warmed love is like re - warmed sarma, pertaining to making up with an ex partner tastes as good). There is also wine leaf sarma, and green leaf sarma, those go really good with sour cream, although you can eat cabbage sarma with sour cream as well it's ridiculously good.
there is two types of sarma, small and normal. It is just about size, taste is same. There are similar meals like sarma. I recomend "punjena paprika" which is "Stuffed Peppers". It is basicly sarma with pepper instead of cabbage. Since i am not bih fan of cabage i allways prefer stuffed peppers.

That makes me happy Jelena! Thank you so much!
I will definitely check that out! Thank you so much!

Bacon=slanina

I loved my time in Serbia during the summer! SO different! Oh no, Sweden is too cold for me lol I went in September and was freezing!

Oh wow! I had no idea!
You definitely have to make it one day! It is sooo good! Onne of my favorites in the country! Thanks so much for the support!

That sounds amazing! I will definitely try that!
Sarma is so good I'm from serbia I have 12 jears and I love that food
In my region we have sarma with "kisela pavlaka" without bread and with bacon (very small pieces) are together with rice and meat inside every piece of sarma (not outside like in this restaurant). Every region or home has little bit different sarma receipe and little bit indenpendent taste. Anyway the best sarma is next day (1-2 days old) and cold sarma especially at night after alko party is very good for recovery :-))))
Prijatno.

It is the other way around. Sarma is actually better when heated up later. The more times it is re-heated the better it gets. Ćevapi are better if they are eaten immediately. Enjoy. :)
Varieties of sarma:
- With green leaves instead of cabbage. Available only in late spring and early summer.
- With wine leaves. Hard to find, as it requires wine leaves to be very young.
Similar dishes:
- "Punjene paprike" - stuffed peppers (similar stuffing of minced meat and rice as in sarma). There are two kinds: stuffed fresh peppers and stuffed dried peppers (sometimes stuffed with minced meat and walnuts).
- "Punjene tikvice" - stuffed zucchini (again, similar stuffing as in sarma).
I can almost smells that sarma.... And im hungry right now

That sounds amazing! Anything with sour cream is great!
@@Travelwithchris Yes - we Americans love sour cream, cheese and Bacon - am I right?
Yes
Sour cream (pavlaka i kiselo mleko) is literally integral in a serbian cuisine. You won't find serbian fridge without sour cream in it.
@@vanjaarsic1616 do you put it on Sarma?
Thank you so much for that information!
You cook sarma today, but you eat it tomorrow, and next days. Heat it and eat well.
Amazing! 🙌🏻
Its soft because its not made from regular fresh cabbage, but from kiseli kupus (can be translated as sour cabbage maybe and its actually a cabbage that has been treated weeks prior making sarma)
You should also try posna sarma which is a vegan kind eaten here during fasting 👌
And for regular sarma, i like it the best with some sour cream on top, its a perfect combination 😍

Sarma goes well with sour cream or sour milk. Some people like to cut the sarma into tiny bits and mix it but I personally think that interferes with the flavour of the sarma itself.I put the sour cream next to the sarma in the plate and put some pepper over everything.Hope my advice helped!

Hey no worries! Glad you're doing well! I hope you had a great time out there! I really want to visit Malta one day! Safe travels!
Jeste li vi Beograđani normalni sa ovim pireom sa sarmom? Jeres! 😂
I've been here during the summer before and yes, you're right! Such a different vibe! Thanks for the recommendations!
usually i put all that "kupus" down and eat separately haha
That sounds nice also!
Once in the 80-is rock band Motorhead was in Beograd and that eat so much sarma and get diaries. They eat without bread because that was so tasty. Always eat sarma with bread 😉🍞
Ahaha so funny! Good to know! ❤️
Glad to see you enjoying your stay in Serbia.
I'm loving it!!
To shed some more light on this, if you're willing to take a read:
Repeating this over the course of three days (the usual/typical Slava festivity time in Serbia, per family) results in something that'd make your taste buds explode with flavor.
I love Sarma!!!!! I had it for the first time in Trebinje, Bosnia-Herzegovina.
I guess sometimes you pay for that ambience. Love your videos, and yes, Serbians look at your weird when you record. Loved the background music.
I honestly loves “Sarmas” !I like putting sour cream on it and mixing it!
