British cars of the 1950s - 1960s Pt2 | Original photographs of old cars & other vehicles in use

- More 1950s & 1960s British car photos make up this addition to the Old Classic Car video channel. Most are black & white, although a few of those from the late 1960s are in colour, which is quite unusual. The majority were also caught on film here in the UK, although a few were photographed in more distant lands.
A number of videos here feature now-classic cars back in the days when they were a common sight on British roads, and this collection shows many of the popular makes and models of cars back when they were in regular use, not "classic cars", just (for the most part) mainstream production cars, bought to do the job of providing daily transport for their owners.
Although this era pre-dates me I still remember many of the cars shown still is use throughout the 1970s and beyond, yet now sightings of such cars are usually at classic car shows and similar meetings, rather than fulfilling their original role.
Highlights for me include a rare Mk2 Hillman Minx DHC, plus a well-laden car ferry down in Cornwall with a selection of British cars on it, two competition-prepared Jaguar Mk7 saloons, a Tripoli-registered Morris Minor 1000, a swish Armstrong-Siddeley Hurricane enjoying a continental road trip, a tantalising glimpse of an Austin A70 woodie, a 1950s Minx driving onto a Silver City air ferry (Bristol Freighter), an immaculate Vauxhall Victor FB estate, and a photo of a vintage Avro aircraft on the roof of a 1950s Ford Thames E83W van.

Hello from south Georgia, USA, I have been watching your videos for a long time, it is time that I subscribed! I have always enjoyed "attending" the car shows and your slide show videos. Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge and history of the vehicles! I have owned my 1961 Morris Minor Traveller since 2018. This rust free California car was purchased from a Sacramento resident who owned the car for 40 years! The cream and burgundy paint, with pinstriping was applied in 1988. The interior was also upholstered in 1988. It is powered by a Chevy 2.8 liter V-6 with a Weber carburetor. Has a 700-r4 automatic transmission with Lokar shifter, Mustang II front suspension with disc brakes and rack & pinion steering, a Ford 8 inch rear differential and dual exhaust system with glasspack mufflers. It is loud, quick, handles well and receives smiles every time I drive it! Very few people know what type of car this is so, there are always many questions. In the 50's one of my uncles had a Mk1 Ford Consul convertible with a power operated top/hood.
Don't you just love this fellows work? I do. I drove some these cars, 70,000 on the clock and you had a knackered engine. Ah...those were the days. Peace be unto you.

HAA 101 (a Southampton number) was supplied in October 1949 as a chassis and front wings only to a Commander A. T. Thistlethwayte, and it is not known what kind of body was built on it, but most likely a wood framed station wagon. The standard steel body of another car was fitted in the late fifties, probably because many of those woody bodies did not age well. It has not been taxed since 2007, but may well still exist in a shed somewhere.
Hi Richard I left school in 1968 and I used to walk past alot of these cars for years. Favourite at that time was new ford's and a 60s Victor. Love the photos the people and the houses.
Hi. I was born in 1955 I Trinidad, West Indies. Our being a member of the Commonwealth meant that the majority of the cars we had here were British. Most of the cars shown in this video were on our roads in one iteration or another.

At 11:40 the ford zephyr 2606 FM photo is in Whitby road Ellesmere Port,opposite the main shopping area.

Thank you for posting these photos. Many of these vehicles were part of my life, from learning, owning, being chauffeured to church by my Grandfather for my wedding and a Morris 1100 nearly ending my life. Now I do feel very old….lol.
Thank you so much for yet another set of photographs. PLEASE keep them coming ! They are so interesting and evoke such happy memories of my dim and distant past. Life seemed so much slower and less chaotic than today.

Once again a fantastic collection of memories, I was born in 1954 and as a child/teen growing up remember most of the bread and butter cars featured here - not so much the more premium pictures such as the Jags etc. My dad ran an A30 back in the day so appreciated the very early version you commented on which I had no idea about. With reference to the photograph of the Bodinnick to Fowey car ferry, yes it is still running, although it is now much larger, self propelled and still runs from the same railways on either side of the river Fowey.
Is it my age or am i going mad? 6LG on a Morris 1100 is now registered to a new Porsche. I prefer to own the Morris. Thanks for these photo's and the effort you put into this channel.

Good to see this set of cars. Seeing the minor drop top, brought back memories. I wanted one for my first car in 1964 but had to settle for 1949 Hillman Minx because my dad thought having a soft top too dangerous if I was to tip it over.
I'm pleased that my choice of a Ford Capri 1600xl was a better option than the Vauxhall Viva.

my mum had 679 LG on a mk1 Cortina; I remember it had a valve radio with an inverter under the fascia to supply the 240v live and you were ill advised to touch any of it for fear of electrocution. We all loved the column changes most of these cars had and it could be confusing for people in a car following when they saw the drivers hands waving about when changing gear. As kids we were trained to hit the B post to encourage the semaphore indicator arm to operate, happy days!
Re the location of the Manor House pub at 13:19, I believe this to be the Manor House at Chedzoy outside Bridgwater in Somerset. Starkeys was a local brewery. The pub has been variously shut down and reopened, not sure of its current status.
very interesting vid. i wish the streets were still that quiet. easy parking. and most if not all them shops have long disapeared now. sad to see. but brings back so many memories of how things used to be. thank you very much for these lovely old vids.
Agreed, the old town streets in particular looked so much better without the endless lines on the road, signs everywhere, traffic lights etc etc. While some does good in improving traffic flow, pedestrian safety etc, I really think in many cases the local authorities go overboard with their signs and tins of paint.
Wonderful selection of nostalgia, again, thanks for uploading them! Nice to see somebody getting everything right, too, although I think the van in the background at 8:26 may actually be a Commer Walk-Thu. The poor old Morris at 10:29 may not have survived but a sister Cowley registered in Hampshire just 5 cars later as MOU581 certainly does as I parked my own Cowley next to it at a steam rally not long ago.
The Safari Rally Anglia at 12:57 may be the car driven by Peter Hughes of Kenya and American Bill Young - they won their class in No.27 Anglia in 1963 (Hughes won the following year's event outright in a Cortina) but the only picture I can find of the car doesn't show the registration number! Look forward to more of your old photographs.

The Ford Popular 100e SUV 613 picture is taken outside the Manor House Inn Croyde Devon. I went to Croyde in Devon many times in the1960s in such cars as an Austin A40 Farina Austin Cambridge, and Vauxhall 101 Super Delux. The Manor House Inn is still there in Croyde today! But it looks a little different now but still in business. It seemed to take forever way back then in these cars and the roads going on family holidays to Devon or Cornwall or Wales from Northants back then. Happy memorise the Caravan with the Singer Estate car is a Fairholme you can see the winged badge they used around this time on the front. We later became touring caravaners in the days when caravaners would wave to each other on the roads. Great pictures, thanks. Kev.

@ 6:15 the MM tourer is not bearing an SL registration.. They were formed according to the island's name that time, CEYLON, starting with CE CY CL CN then EY EL EN and a number or numbers thereafter...

Deepal is correct. Definitely not Sri Lanka/Ceylon. In addition to the two-letter alpha-prefixes Deepal mentions there were also 'CV', for commercial vehicles, and 'IC' for diesel- or 'compression ignition'-engined vehicles. Consensus among the cognoscenti (although unconfirmed) is that 'IC' were the reversed initials for 'Compression Ignition'.
My 'money' is on SINGAPORE as the location for the Morris Minor MM tourer SC 5025.

The Jaguar SUM 7 I think might be a Mk 8 as the MK7 has a split windscreen. Keep up the good work I really

Brilliant pictures as usual. I love the Rootes cars,they really nailed badge engineering back then. I love the Humber Super Snipe,a sort of mini Chevrolet styling wise. I also love the Daimler Majestic Major,sadly underrated.It could outrun a mk10 Jag with it’s Edward Turner designed 4.5 litre hemi V8 which was probably a bit embarrassing for Jaguar at the time .Keep the photos coming.
Many years ago (c1992) I was sorely tempted to rescue two derelict Daimlers, one a Majestic, the other a Majestic Major, sadly I didn't and I suppose they were scrapped (there are photos somewhere), but yes the 4.5 V8 must have been quite a car

I do like these old photos, cars frozen in time. A friend of a friend had a Rover P4 (not the syclops) lovely in dark grey. He nicknamed it 'the Pig', I suppose there is some resemblance. Thanks for sharing this collection. 👍
Excellent, thank you. Takes me back to my boyhood years. The variety of (British) cars is amazing. Very different from now. Your car was welcome everywhere, times were more mellow. No one was political correct, the phrase was not invented back then. I do believe those were the good old days...
The Austin a40 Devon is parked in Worcester where the college now stand. You can just make out Worcester cathedral in the background. I know my city anywhere.
Also the large street science with Tudor houses is also Worcester. Far building in the left is the commandery where Charles took operations during the battle of Worcester last battle of the English civil war. Cromwell took city from royalists the king fled the city disguised.

More great content! The Manor House Inn is in Croyde, Devon, and apparently still trading.
The brewery with the black horse logo was Starkey, Knight and Ford of Tiverton and Bridgwater.

The Avro Avian 594 IIIA G-EBZM still exists in the Air and Space Hall Manchester Museum of Science and Industry.

Great collection with accurate narration. The 1950's/60's were the golden years of British car manufacturing so why the decline? British Leyland should have stuck
to manufacturing lorries and buses for one, strike after strike by workers adding to the industries demise. I remember well auto workers looking down upon engineering apprenticeships in Coventry at the time. Little did they know!! Greetings from a Brit residing in the USA.

Pic with tractor is Worcester pitchcroft racecourse oldest in the world I’m told.
Assuming it is a British make, the car with the wheel on the running board might be a Rolls Royce Phantom, or possibly a Humber.
Or possibly an Alvis such as the Speed 25

Mayyybeee but as I recall it came in a batch of photos all from that part of the world, so I think overseas is more likely. Thanks for watching, more vids like this are planned
