  • Welcome to Original Photos of British Cars 1950s - 1960s, part number 10!! I never thought this series featuring in-period photographs of British-built classic cars from the post-war era would prove so popular, yet they are proving to be amongst the most-viewed videos here on the Old Classic Car channel. As I love these old car images too, it's a pleasure to put these compilations together.
If you can help out with old photos like these that could feature (credited etc) in future uploads, please drop me a line via the main site.
Many of these car photos and street scenes are well worth a really close looking at, not just for the car(s) that feature, but also the street furniture (eg road signs, markings etc), the tidiness/lack of litter (or otherwise) of the areas shown, and of course the fashions exhibited by the people who often appear with the vehicles.
So what cars will you find in this upload? Here are just a few:
    Reliant Regal Mk1
    Morris Mini-Minor Mk1
    Morris Minor saloon & Traveller
    Hillman Minx
    Ford Anglia 105E
    Ford Consul Mk1 & Mk2
    Standard 10 on an auto-test
    Jaguar Mk5
    Austin A30
    Morris Oxford MO saloon
    MG Magnette (Farina)
    Triumph Mayflower saloon
    Vauxhall Victor F-Type car
Triumph Herald convertible & estate car
    Wolseley 1500
    Austin Cambridge saloon
    Jaguar XK120 roadster
    Ford 100E
    Daimler Majestic Major
    Ford Zephyr Mk3 taxi
Triumph Spitfire 4 Mk1 etc etc
plus commercial vehicles such as a Scammell Scarab that is shown in a bit of a pickle, a Bedford HA van, and a Bedford TK.
If you haven't yet seen the previous instalments, totalling hundreds of original old photos of British cars just like these, please take a look when you're finished here and think about subscribing to Old Classic Car so as not to miss future uploads.
Likes and comments welcomed as always, plus a big thanks from me to everyone that has so far contributed images to use in these compilations.

Hi From Australia.I was born in New Zealand so we had piles of English cars .
Regarding schinnick Street, that's in Dover Gardens ,a suburb of Adelaide in South Australia. It is still hot and dusty like in the pic and the sign on the pole reads Shinning prohibited. The Pole is called a Stobie Pole and they were made by laying two pieces of used railway line down on the floor, then filling in between with concrete. Termites will eat anything less than steel .That particular one is still there!. Many have been removed .South Australia being the only place that had them.If you hit one with a car,it was usually fatal. The house on the corner and it's rock wall behind the oxford is still there but changed a lot, probably to suit the hot climate. The hose besides the car has gone, there's just an empty lot there now.

at 7:37 you missed the Vee badge on the Wolseley. Back in the day, you'd look at the number of years on the badge to determine how long the driver had been a member. The test to get in was quite extraordinary, mostly dependent upon your skills in creating as complete a commentary as possible as you drove. Sat beside you was a "passed-master" taking notes on everything he thought you missed.

The Vitesse 2 Ltr on a G reg is the last of the MK1's without Rotorflex. Without looking underneath the identifiers for the MK2 are horizontal grill bars, silver plate in the boot recess with the number plate mounted to it and rostyle wheel trims. The dash is also laid out differently. The engine was also improved for the MK2 with another 7bhp.

the reason the F type victor rotted like they did, is there was a strike at the factory and thousand's of body shell's were stored outside for six months when they were only finished in primer.
so when the strike ended all the shell's were brought in and painted while they were still damp, and then just rotted away underneath the paint. this didn't do vauxhall's reputation any favours!

The only Shinnick Street I could find was in Campbelltown in South Australia. Also I noticed the construction of the electricity poles are the same in the "Photo" as well as on "Google maps". The Poles are Steel with the center filled with concrete.

@@keithjones7390 Thanks! It would put a new slant on seeing those wrecked cars of yester year. The old Rovers, such as the 90, 100 and 105 were tough, and seemed to fare quite well in road accidents. The smaller cars with less mass - always came off second-best! There are quite a lot of those old 'classics' here in Australia, the weather looks after them. I drive a '71 Beetle, which is simplicity by comparison to those modern 'junk plastic cars' that are found in scrapyards, still with great bodywork, but uneconomical to repair on the sophisticated electronics and highly-tuned engines that fail.

I was thinking. In Australia a big property we used to call a "Station". Perhaps that's why we say "Station Wagon". In UK you call a large property an "Estate". Perhaps you have "Estate Wagon". And of course, USA large property is a "Ranch". Maybe they have a "Ranch Wagon". Not sure, do you have anything else from anywhere else?

    • @jonathangriffin1120
      @jonathangriffin1120 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Here in England we used 'Estate car', 'Station wagon' and 'Shooting brake', only 'Estate car' survives now, and that's been shortened to just 'Estate'. An exception to this rule was Morris who named their estate cars 'Travellers' in the fifties and sixties. BMC sister company Austin used the name 'Countryman'.

Your incisive comments on some of these pictures, made me realise that either you have X-RAY VISION (To notice things I certainly couldn't on my mobile screen), OR , much more likely, you are looking at far LARGER images, so you notice things such as whether cars have stick-on rear window antimist panels!
