  • Welcome to Part 11 of Original Photos of British Cars 1950s - 1960s, where classic British cars of this era are celebrated thanks to fantastic old images from the time. If you're new to the Old Classic Car channel and haven't yet seen the previous instalments, I'll include a link to the photos playlist at the end of this video, where all the photo collections are grouped together.
    Hundreds upon hundreds of these original old photographs capture much of the motoring scene here in Britain during the post-war era. Most are from my own collection of pictures, while others (credited accordingly) have been sent in by OCCers who follow the channel - and to whom I say a big Thanks!
    I won't give too much away, but the old British cars you'll find in this upload include examples of Bond Minicar, Morris Minor, Jaguar Mk1, Riley Pathfinder, Singer SM1500 saloon car, Sunbeam Alpine, Standard Vanguard, Vauxhall Victor, Hillman Minx and a much-mangled Ford Prefect (technically this one was built prior to the 1950 cut-off, but the photo is from the 1950s).
    Commercial vehicles are represented here by a well-used Ford E83W, Reliant Supervan III, Austin K8, Morris LD ++

    Think the Mk2 Ford at 10:28 is actually an early Highline Zephyr with the egg-crate grille fitted in the early months of production. These are fantastic photos!

    I believe that registration 6841 at 16:00 is a Guernsey number.
    Very interesting video.

    Many thanks as always and yes indeed, much more interesting than football! It always interests me what a short production life some of the cars had! 2 years or less in some cases.

    Very nice set of photos. The car with the Bournemouth registration looks like it is in Bournemouth as I recognise the wall, it is near the sea front. This is a long shot but I wonder if the mangled Ford with the Young lady posing beside it was a car she managed to 'escape' from or a family member perhaps? Just a guess of course but I can't think of any other reason why a young lady of that time might want to pose with such a wreck. It is almost as interesting seeing the people's dress of the time, many of the Gentlemen wearing a tie for example as my Father did when he was younger. Anyway thanks for the collection Rick.👍👍

    At least you could tell them apart before the euroboxes arrived! You know you are old when they all seem so familiar. I'm sure I spotted two of my aunts and a school friend!

      I've lost count of the cars my father owned featured in this lovely series of films. l remember them all so well, even a lot of the registration numbers, how sad is that? 😒
      And yes, no euroboxes in sight anywhere!

      @@keithjones7390 funny you say that, I recall the number of our green ford consul and a later Austin a90! I won't quote them as I sometimes weave them into passwords as they are memorable!
      My dad's cars, Riley 9, Austin a70 ( Hereford?), Consul, Austin a90 ( Westminster?) , Zephyr mk 2 in NZ, Zephyr MK2 back in UK, Vauxhall FB, Austin 1800 ( land crab) Triumph 2000 MK1, Triumph 2000 MK2, Peugeot 504 .....

      @@johnfaulkner6776 l remember when we moved from Liverpool to North Wales in 1960 my father did a deal with a neighbour and exchanged his lovely Rover 90 which was his pride and joy for a Vauxhall Cresta, (he didn't want to leave the Rover outside overnight) He hated the Cresta and got rid of it soon after we moved.
      Some other cars he had later were a Triumph Mayflower, a Ford Zephyr 6 mkll, an MG Magnette, a Ford Zephyr 4 mk lll, a Singer Gazelle estate, a Morris 1100 (for about 2 weeks) a 1967 Austin 1800, a 1966 Rover 2000, a 1965 Ford Zodiac mklll auto, he had that car the longest, one unusual car he had was a Ford Mkll Lotus Cortina.
      Funny thing was after all the Ford's and BMC cars he had over time, the last car he had before he died was a Mazda.

      I'm always reminded of my Dad when l see these old cars, he was a Ford and BMC man, l wish l had a couple of his lovely cars which he used to keep immaculate.

    A cracking video. My father had a early 50's Vauxhall Wyvern oin light grey with red interior. Always made me car sick on long journeys. The car had a very distinctive smell about it. 3 on the tree gear selection. Always had trouble with louding gears going up hill. Brought back many a memory.

    Another great selection Richard! Being something of a Vauxhall 'geek' myself, the rear end to the left of the F type Victor on the second photo appears to be that of a L type Vauxhall, I would hazard it being a Velox due to the overriders on the bumper. I'm pretty sure the car in the background featured on the photo outside Giblins Hotel is a Simca Aronde P60. I recall one of my first primary (junior) school teachers having one of these around 1964; I thought it pretty flash and eye-catching at the time as it was a very unusual car and painted pale yellow with a black roof. I also agree with the comment below that the two tone, highline mark 2 Ford is an 'egg crate' grilled Zephyr. I loved the mark 1 Consul photos as this took me back to the one I owned between 1972/75 when I was still a schoolboy and at the time obsessed by old Fords.     The dark saloon beyond the wrecked Prefect E493 (@21:46) looks like it could be a Traction Avant. The light coloured car - heaven knows !!

    At 16:18 I believe the car behind the second Hillman 105E is a 1953 or 1954 Chevrolet 210 sedan. I owned a 1953 and if the trim is the same in the UK as in the US, then that's what it is.

    Richard the early MM car that you said was taken in Australia is taken in NZ as the plate is a NZ issued one, the star between the numbers indicates it was taken between 1956 and 1962 (plates were brown with white characters). The 2 Minors and the minx at 11.10 are indeed in NZ also. That would have been taken between 62 to 65 the dot between numbers helps place that (plates were yellow with black characters). From 1965 here all new cars were registered with plates for life and these ones would have been given the new series too. Keep these coming I enjoy your channel.

    The Vauxhall Cresta with the 'MH' registration was actually a Middlesex (County Council) registration at the time. Although, the Greater London Council took over from April 1965, and also took parts of Essex, Surrey and Kent with some of their area codes.

      Here in Newcastle we 'inherited' an Aberdeen mark in the 1975 reshuffle. That took a bit of getting used to!

    Regards the location of the Vauxhall Victor at 0.50, I took NPC 653 parked next to it as a clue and found it to be outside no.24 Belgrave Road, Shepperton!

    Bear in mind back when those photographs were taken reflex lens cameras were a bit 'exotic' for the 'average bloke in the street' so not everybody was proficient in compensating for the lens/viewfinder discrepancy on a lot of cameras available at the time. This could result in a lot of 'decapitations'. Great photos nonetheless, BTW I reckon that background car in the last shot is a 'Traction Avant' Citroen.     Hayward and Clifford were both members of the touring British and Irish Lions touring team (Rugby Union) 1950 at 16.45 minutes in with AustinA70. Might this be where they were touring in New Zealand or Australia? The blazer badge gives it away!

    At 0.53 I'm 99.9% sure the car to the left of the Victor is a Vauxhall Wyvern.

    I suspect that the photo at 11.01 is more likely in New Zealand given the number plate style; I live in New South Wales AUS for all my 70 years and I don't recognise those plates in any state of Aus.

    Great to see the Singer SM1500 slab sided old thing, I owned three Singer Hunters only because I liked the horses head bonnet mascot, otherwise slab sided. But I owned mine 28years so I must have really loved it secretly lol 😂

      @@jonathangriffin1120 Hi, apparently so but I never came across one, I think just the front wings. My three Hunters were steel. About 4 or 12 Singer SMX 4 seater sports tourers were built, they had a glass fibre body. With the Hunter grille. Cheers

      My dad had a SM1500 in 1958, And I needed a cheap car quick in 1977 so I bought one from a girl I was sharing a house with .An all original car in very nice condition.I decided I better buy a parts car and I bought another original condition car which was as good as the 1st one!. So...another Singer was bought but this was a Hunter and the Hunter bonnets were fibre glass,with really heavy woven matt ,which looked like carpet on the engine side. I only had them for a short while as others wanted them for cheap transport.None survived past 1980 unfortunately. I liked the cars ,though not superfast they could be driven through turns without worry.The Front suspension design was actually bought from Packard!.

    ROH 929 looks very much like an A50 on 15" wheels and flying A Hub caps of around 1954.

    Excellent selection of classics from the 50's and 60's. I particularly liked the info on where most of the cars originated from based on the licence plate. I got the impression the drivers of these cars would have been more refined in their driving skills, and would have frowned upon 'tailgating' and 'cutting up' other road users.
