    I wish so badly that we did this in the U.S. these engines look so serious on the main line.. they have the dignity of going fast as they're meant to. That doesn't happen here.

    • @Penryn87
      @Penryn87 3 ปีที่แล้ว +49

      At this point, all of our operable steamers are just getting old. The faster you run them, the more wear, the soon they have to go in for a full overall.. and $$$$ for that isn’t guaranteed. Even in the UK, Tornado is the only engine to my knowledge that can really do mainline running. It’s not just the cost of insurance for someone who might get hurt, it’s the cost of insuring basically the irreplaceable. I hope that the Pennsy T-1 they are building will be allowed to run at line speed at least, but honestly I fear she too will be relegated to 45mph. 😭😭

    • @04clemea
      @04clemea  3 ปีที่แล้ว +70

      @@Penryn87 Tornado is not the only locomotive that can "really do mainline running" it's in the same boat as all the other mainline locomotives, which there are many.
      35028 'Clan Line' as seen a few times in the video, has run on the mainline since 1974. The big locomotives in the UK can be operated upto 90mph but requires a lot of paperwork and tests. Unofficially, many locomotives have run at that speed.

    When I was a kid, about 9 or 10 maybe, I used to go to a bridge with my pals. A straight one with a sort of metal grid floor. We would stand on it and wait for the express to sweep past at full speed. Incredibly exiting to see these monsters roaring towards you and then pass a few feet beneath you. A blast of noise, smoke, steam, heat, and smell. Incredible memory and sadly one that kids today will never experience.

      You're seeing steam traction technology at its pinnacle, the highest it ever got. All these locos were withdrawn in the 60's, and many were getting on by then. Most were rebuilt from scrap condition after often years sitting in Barry scrapyard in Wales. As my wallpaper I have 34046 Braunton in very poor condition after being laid up at Barry for 25 or so years. With a click I can bring up Braunton as she is now, if I need cheering up
      Without Dai Woodham it would have been so very different....

      @Doctor Whos No sir. 1) They need a turnstile to turn around for the return journey, 2) they need water every couple of hundred miles and hence not good for long distance non stop trains, 3) their acceleration to full speed took about 3-5 miles. 4) they spewed a lot of coal dust and smoke, 5) need at least 3 strong men to operate.

    • @KingdaToro
      @KingdaToro 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not about power. Steam locos are actually too powerful for their own good, which you can see by how hard it is to avoid wheelslip when starting from a stop. And ones like these with the large-diameter driver wheels are extremely fast as well. The main reason not to use them is fuel efficiency, only 11% for steam vs 30-35% for diesel. They're also extremely high maintenance and labor intensive, requiring almost a full day to build up steam and requiring lots of water stops along the line as they don't recondense their exhaust steam.

    Steam trains at speed on Main Line is a awasome video presentation.
    As an ex-station Masters worked in South Central Railway, South Eastern Railway on Secunderabad Division (BG) & Waltair Division respectively I had enough experience in passing trains, Marshalling of both passenger and freight trains.
    I deeply love the way the crew used to fire & maintain the accurate steam in the engine especially on the ghat section in the rainy days used to run the train at some occasions the wheels were skidding and used to clear the block section with out train parting and used to arrive into the station section on time.
    It's really the team spirit the crew and guard and all the operating staff used to unite and ensure the steam locomotive hauling trains with safety and punctuality.
    The rythamatic beat of the steam locomotives used to vibrate my heart as and when I used to work at way side stations and passing through the said trains.
    I worked as a station master as well as station manager with all the there types of locomotives i.e. Stem, Diesel & Electrical
    If any one question which are the most enjoyable times of working with the above three types of locomotives?
    I prefer to say that the steam locomotive period is the golden period in which we used to have inbuilt zeal, fitness, enthusiasm,encouragement, well sycncronised team work and used to enjoy the work happily even though it's most strenuous compared to the working of the other two types of locomotives.
    I LOVE THE STEAM LOCOMOTIVES FROM THE CORE OF MY HEART.

    It amazes me how far Japan has come with the development of their Shinkansen. I rode the original back in 1976. I like that Japan has relied on electrification of their train lines. the US has gone with diesel mostly. Anyways, keep going. Good videos. Thanks.

    Terrific , but for the pollution ! I recall riding steam trains in India. Coal particles entering through the windows and falling into the eyes( non-ac trains). But the temptation of looking outside to the horizon, moving with the train was irresistible !

    I know those diesels on the back of some of those trains are there "just in case," but it's kind of sad anyway. A great video of elegance and power regardless!

    It is extremely efficient streame locomotive. Love to see its great action. What is the model and how it was built and where????
    These are still feasible to use in those countries having million of tons of coal???

      There are various types shown, I know that the LMS ones (black 5’s, duchesses, princesses, royal Scot’s, jubilee’s) were all built at Crewe works. The LNER ones were built at Darlington, anything great western was Swindon but idk about southern ones. The BR standards were built at all the works, so it depends on the engine

    A fun to watch now.
    Steam train moving fast under an Eectric overhead traction.
    When I was a child or youth, I used to stop walking g and watch the train puffing more smoke than steam, in a hot country like India.( steam is not visible due to hot air around).That was the nesmerusm of the old Train whistle!😁😷
