    Hey mate I wanted to thank you for this video. I have the exact same engine but in a 2015 XC60 T5. Dealership quoted me $800 estimate, but thanks to this excellent video and ebay motors I was able to wrench this out myself for $70 all said and done. You're a life saver.
    P.S. this massively improved my engine idling and performance and also cleared up a catalytic converter code that would have lead to a $2.5k replacement.

    Very informative video. I just determined before I saw that this breather system was introducing massive noise which I though was serpentine related but second guessed bc of lean codes and no noise under load. Took the oil cap off and no more noise lol. Smoke tested the intake and nothing but smoke came out of the atmosphere vent. Bet it's torn as well. Thanks for posting this as it. Nice reassurance that my diag was correct.

When I try to top it off with oil sometimes it takes a long time to drain. Have to pour extra slow. Also when I get gas even if my tank is on e after two or three gallons the pump nozzle pops and I can hear air pushing out the gas tank fill neck, any ideas what this could be?

    Thank you so much for the video! I just finished replacing mine and I’m waiting for the bat to reset the computer. We have exactly the same car. I noticed you didn’t need to stick your keyfab in the car to start it. Is there a way to bypass having to do that? I find it very annoying to have to stick it in the slot to start it.

    • @cawampler
      @cawampler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure about a bypass, my car has proximity keys so they never have to leave your pocket for unlocking (just grab handle -unlocks), or starting. Some functions require the fob to be in the slot (resetting maintenance minder) but otherwise it's all radio signal. In fact, you can drive the car away accidentally leaving the key behind and it won't blink an eye at you. Then you can reach your destination and have your wife drive your key to you so you can start it up again haha.

    • @cawampler
      @cawampler  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure, the batch of piston rings that caused the most prolific oil consumption issues were in the 2015's and solved by the 2016MY if I remember correctly, his oil consumption could be something else. I know replacing this box was part of the original TSBs for those cases though. There's just more than 1 thing up in the air around oil consumption with a turbo so it's hard to say. Just tell him to throw it in the list of considerations!

    • @cawampler
      @cawampler  ปีที่แล้ว

      If the box & diaphragm are new then I think you're possibly looking at a vacuum issue elsewhere. If you don't have a smoke tester then your next best bet is to spray something on your vacuum lines until you get a change. There are various sprays people like to use, take a look into that and maybe it helps!

    Great video. I'm having a similar problem with my 2013 Volvo XC70 3.2L and have a couple of questions. First, I'm assuming you already know this but you could have ordered the diaphragm by itself and just replaced that. The PCV assembly cost 250.00 but the diaphragm was just 50.00 so saves money and work. However, did I miss something? Often the diaphragm cap gets broken when removing it but you appear to have gotten your's off pretty easily without a break. Regardless, my new diaphragm came with a new cap so it wouldn't have been a problem anyway.
    2nd question. I was intrigued by the diagnostic app you were using. What app is that?
    Thanks for the video. Really helps.

    • @cawampler
      @cawampler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Where in the world did you find a replacement diagram?? I looked everywhere and even asked the dealer and they said it was not available by itself, even VIDA didn't show an individual part # for me. I pried the cap off carefully and it appeared to just snap on and off around some plastic tabs, nothing appeared broken and I was surprised because I had also read the cap just breaks.
      I was using Blue Driver, it's great.

    • @cawampler
      @cawampler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This does not have 2 systems, the part I replaced is the evolution of older PCV systems on Volvos and handles it all, the tech who sold me the part even referred to it as the "combination" breather box. As for the hose you're asking about, I'm not sure which one you're referring to - there's a few connecting to the manifold.

      I don't know if it's due to the new breather box, or if I coincidentally started to eat oil due to the notorious piston rings on the 2015's, but I didn't have any oil consumption issues until I replaced the breather box.

    • @cawampler
      @cawampler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      YES! I don't know if it's causation or correlation but my oil change 4 months after I replaced the breather box was the first one where I noticed decreased volume. Since then I have needed to add a liter on 2 occasions. It's puzzling because I send my oil off for analysis after every change and there have been zero signs of metal from ring wear in the samples. What's even more confusing is that replacing the breather box is the first step Volvo uses to FIX oil consumption so I have no idea how it could be the cause of it.

      I have your exact same engine, I went through this exact situation, and now I am losing 1-2 qts in 600 miles of synthetic oil after oil change. What is going on? How could it possibly be this oil trap? I understand this operates as an oil catch can, however I find it hard to believe 2 QTs of oil are running through this in 600 miles.

    • @skippychris10

      Replying to my own post. I had a brand new breather box rubber gasket laying around. I saw it. I decided to take out the breather box and noticed oil wasn't really staying in its respective compartment. It led me to think the gasket wasn't really sealing so I swapped it. 8 days later, I got the 1 qt refill prompt. I torqued everything to specs and order when installing, in accordance to Vida. I suspect my leak is either at the piston rings, sleeve or somewhere in the PCV breather box. Another week, another quart, this is insane.

      So I've actually done 4 methods to reset the fuel trim memory and the one I mentioned was the fourth. I'm presuming it worked (as I read it should) because after taking the car for a drive my live readings were consistent with my prior reset methods (VDASH, VIDA. and the Driving Parameters Procedure) and I saw no unusual trim balancing attempts by the car. I believe what I mentioned in the video was disconnecting the negative lead and attempting to start the car a few times and I believe I read about that method on the Swedespeed forums.
      Also, this problem DID NOT solve my reoccurring P0171 lean condition code. That was eventually traced and solved by replacing the front 02 sensor.

I put some duct tape on the broken diaphragm but the car still idles at 3.1k and I can still feel some air being pulled through the diaphragm cap. I ordered the diaphragm from ipdusa. 30 bucks total. Hopefully this fixes the issue and I don't have to buy the entire top breather box.
