Especially with how all 80s cartoons had the main heroes triumph over evil every episode Megatron killing Optimus prime solidified him as one the baddest villains ever
Awesome review! I was a 12 year old back then and Megatron is and was my favorite 80's villain, tough and yields to nothing, even questioned unicron after being banged up by Optimus, truly iconic and the most unrelenting bad guy, a properly invented villain.
Loved this! Have followed Megatron through all his incarnations from 1984 and have most all in my collection. To a fan and collector, these videos bring such rekindled happiness.
Fantastic retrospective! I’m 43 so the only version of Megatron that resonates with me is the G1 incarnation. Everything else (including Galvatron) seems so... odd to me. Yet for others, the tank or Beast Wars Megatrons are the versions that are held in the most dearest regard. Generational emotional attachment is such a fascinating part of toy history. Also, thanks for delving into the 80s comic lore. Really added a lot of depth and colour to the video. Great work as always!
Finished now, and the applause continues. My favourite Megatron memory? Christmas 1985, when I found the Decepticon leader under our tree. Packaged in robot mode as he was, I couldn't figure out how to transform him - even with the instructions! That was our year to host all of my father's fellow police officer for Christmas lunch, so they each offered to help out. Picture 20 or so cops in uniform, at the dinner table, arguing over a replica pistol and you have a memory that'll never leave me :-)
Ah the 80s, when finding a Walther P-38 under the tree from Santa was one of the highlights of a kid's Christmas. :D Man, I would have loved to see a whole line of cop toys as Transformers. A night stick, cuffs, walkie...

my personal opinion it would have been so much easier if megatron had be a tank from the start instead of a gun. Megatron that I have on my shelf is the repaint/remold of bludgeon into a g2 to inspired Megatron.

Great review of a great villain. The only 80s villain who actually killed the hero. In addition, G1 Megatron is banned in the US and UK. How many fictional villains can say that? Welker was great voicing him in G1 and Prime. As a kid, I always felt his hoarse voice was a sign of how powerful he was. As though he was so powerful, it was slowly eating away at him.
Funny how there were 8 Constructicons who built Megatorn, not 6. I always thought that Constructicons at that point were just like earth constructors, neither good nor bad, just the best at doing things like building bots. I always assumed that since the war for Cybertron raged for millions of years, a group of the Decepticon faction decided to build the perfect weapon that would be the ultimate leader of the Decepticons, and thus, they got the Constructicons who were famous for building the Crystal City to build them the perfect commander. Megatron was built to be perfection. Kinda what happened with Prime after he was destroyed by Megatron when he was Orion Pax, Alpha Trion built a Autobot to be better than whatever came before him and an ANTI Decepticon commander fighter.
If I was writing for a new Transformers series, Megatron would be introduced by Soundwave running into his throne room, announcing "My lord, there is situat-", only to be cut off short by Megatron standing up from his throne and saying "What did that idiot Starscream do this time?"
Back in the early 2000's, there was a guy who was making resin cast replica parts of G1 Transformers. I had asked Ken if he could replicate the missing parts for the firing mechanism and plastic bullets that were included in the Takara re-issue, so some original North American G1 Megatron figures were retrofitted with those parts to be able to shoot. He also did a replica of the sword as well
Was that Transrepro? The website is still up but they're no longer in business. I ordered some parts from there and they were top notch. He was a true Toy Artist.
Awesome video! I don't have that many G1 toys having lost, broken, or given them away as I grew up but when Takara started reissuing these in the cool boxes with Pat Lee's art on the front, I started getting a lot of them including Megatron. Definitely a keeper and one that I will cherish as long as I can. As much as I love Frank Welker's voice for all the characters, I still much prefer Leonard Nimoy's as Galvatron. Who would have thought that he would join the cast and just do such an amazing job of portraying this new incarnation of the supreme Decepticon leader?! If TakaraTomy ever does their own Masterpiece Galvatron, I hope he comes with a voice box that has quotes by Leonard Nimoy!
I remember one episode when Optimus held Megatron in gun form to shoot at Devastator. Optimus could’ve crushed him once and for all. And I always wondered how he can shrink himself.

Megatron is my absolute fave transformer of all time, but none more than IDW's Megatron from MTMTE and Lost Light. I love him to bits. Milne's art only amplifies that.
I love that this video gave an in depth history of G1 (real) megatron and at the end skimmed over the others that also carry the name megatron in newer transformers series. The newer series could just never capture the magic of G1 and Michael Bay didn't just fail to recapture the magic of G1 he took a diarrhea dump all over it.
I'm convinced that Generation 2 was Hasbro giving up on the transformers line. Looking at some of the toys, their thought process was probably something like 'the generation that made us millions is all grown up and nobody cares anymore'.

Machine Wars was my real entry into transformers. My sister had almost all the G1 transfomers. I got them as hand me downs. The G2 megatron was the first transformers that was bought for me. It holds a special spot in my heart too. I keep hoping Hasbro with update the machine wars line at some point, but I don't think it will ever happen.

I always wanted the original Megatron figure,but I didn't really get into transformers until 1985 when I was 5 or 6 and by that time I think the had stopped selling it.But I was lucky enough to get the original shockwave for my 5th or 6th birthday and I believe he was a better quality figure anyway(larger and better made with a greater transformation)
In a way, Megatron can still be a gun, a **self propelled** gun, it’s a kind of tank that’s basically a mobile artillery howitzer. We can even make it a WW2 German design like the “Wespe” as a throwback to his original mode being a Walther P38, which was a German handgun.
