#transformers #masterforce
I was 15 in 1988, and whilst I was considered too old for toys, I did buy the odd toy still, I loved powermaster Optimus Prime, the comic kept my interest in these
The comic was a great alternative once the Sunbow show ended.
You buy Transformers toys for life
Agreed. The comic stayed good until the end, even though I was no longer into the toys at that point.
Hey.. my little nephews love transformers now .. and I at 48 still get excited when they bring them out lol.. your never too old for transformers ;) BUT.. the only toy we can still get away with at out ages is gaming ..
@@brianbabin6333 yea I’m younger but looking at it from someone who didn’t grow up with g1 I also find the 87 through to 89 the best era of g1 pretenders are also my favorite gimmick
I can’t wait for “the history of Transformers: 1989 edition“ whenever that comes out.
That was a massive amount of toys for one year. Now I know why my parents didn't like my idea of getting them all.
I find it really crazy how much better Japan did this time period. They had a cartoon/manga and often better toys. I also find the Japanese version of the concepts to be much more compelling. Always hated the idea of them giving up their heads to random aliens. I much prefer the headmasters just being the guy and the body being an unmanned transtector. Or the human controlled transtectors of Super God Masterforce. I especially love the lore of Ginrai’s body being originally intended for Convoys resurrection. Such a cool story.
Wow what a labor of love this was, tons of work, much appreciated. The late 80's TF's definitely get confusing to me and become a mish-mash. It's definitely a lot of "a hat on a hat" as the great Jim Cornette would say. I discovered Powermaster Optimus existed when I opened him as a present in 88 and wow, my mind was blown. I also had Spark-Stalker, the Firecon, and I can't believe they sold toys that shot flames, even back then.
Thanks Bob, glad you enjoyed it. Those Pretender beasts definitely seem like a 'hat on a hat.' What an awesome way to find out Prime was back!
I bought and still have my Power Master Optimus Prime in the Summer of 1988. I was 13 and considered too old for toys, but I didn’t care what anyone said.
Same here!
Me too. He was the last Transformer I bought during my childhood, and I remember thinking I was too old to buy him - but I did anyway.
This is one of my favorite years in G1 era if only because The Masterforce cartoon is just so good and I do really think it has some of the coolest looking design especially on the Autobot side.
Things got too weird for me at this point. Luckily, I was moving on to building model cars, BMX and BB guns anyway.
I was 10 in 88, I had power master prime, thank you for bringing back my childhood again Michael, I really appreciate the time and effort you put into editing, awesome as always 😊
Wowzers...😮...those Pertenders🤖Transformers thingys were heIIa frickin' awesome...🤘🏼💯✔️ And I totally❤dig King👑Poseidon...👍🏼
As an idw fan, simply hearing getaway’s name sent a cold wind blowing through my door and shivers down my spine
45:05 In the Marvel UK comic Catilla was originally a Decepticon who later defected to the Autobots.
Cool!
Back in ‘88 my family lived in LA and I remember getting the sparker Flamefeatherin the summer and Piranhacon for Christmas. I had no idea who they were since I was only familiar with the animated series, but I loved them just the same. In ‘89 we moved to Germany and that’s where I discovered Pretenders, powermasters, microbots and then action masters. I was naive to think that Germany just had weird versions of American toys especially since He-Man toys had gone to outer space and he had a pony tail. Thank you for your hard work in putting this together. It really brought me back.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Excellent stuff as always, good brother. I've a real soft spot for the '88 releases. The back of the box art owned by childhood brain for so long, and a lot of the characters - Dreadwing, the Seacons, the Sparkabots and, of course, Powermaster Optimus Prime - are favourites, both in terms of toy and personality, to this day.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Lovedddd the Gerald Brisco call out, "A shooter doesn't do anything he doesn't" is probably the most underrated line in this video hahaha
Thanks! Stan Hansen talking about Bob Backlund inspired that one . Someone asked Stan if he could beat Bob in a shoot and Stan said, "If he let me!" 😆
Great presentation and effects for this detailed look at the 1988 era Transformers collection. Great job, thanks! The original US box/card art of the older generations was unbeatable IMO.
Thanks! The back of box art was always epic.
I cannot really express just how much I enjoyed this video. I smiled all the way through it. It brought so much nostalgic joy back. Figures I had and ones I'd never seen. Truly great work your videos are of such high quality. They are outstanding.
Thanks, glad to hear it.
This is much appreciated. I can tell it becomes more of a slog when it comes to highlighting the not-so glamorous portion of the latter G1 line. But keep on going on, my friend. You do a great job.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Have a great day!
Just brilliant, Michael!
Best toy channel by far.
Thank you kindly.
4:43 Its funny, the line had come full circle to its Diaclone roots with this depiction.
Nice use of the Water World SNES soundtrack during the aquatic Decepticon portion.
Thanks for the video man, did that bring back memories, had completely forgotten how many of this range of toys I had back in 88, think I even still have The Headmasters comic book series somewhere in my parents attic..... that was a flood of memories for sure
Thanks, happy to hear you enjoyed it.
I was getting a little old for them in 1988 and did NOT care for Pretenders, but I definitely picked up Quickmix, Race Car and Air Strike Patrols.
I needed this, I've been so depressed the past few I lost my aunt in October, and watching this made me a 10 year old kid again for an hour, thanks so much
I'm so sorry for your loss.
You never DISAPOINT Michael!!!! Excellent review and video!!!!
Thanks, happy to hear you enjoyed it!
Excellent work Michael, thanks for all your hard work it must have taken to make this 👍
Thank you, happy you enjoyed it!
Watching the SuperGod MasterForce Dub and Japanese series really inspired the structure for my Secondary school leadership!!! Michael, Only my brother had Powermaster Optimus Prime and Victory's Deathsaurus plus Squeezeplay (SGMF). Not going to lie, this is one of the continuity series you did since the 1987 video!!! Keep it up, dude!!!
I was born way after all the 80s toylines you cover, but I've always been so fascinated by them. Your videos do a great job showcasing them, this one being no different. I always felt 88 was the peak of post 86 G1 Transformers. Powermaster Prime in particular is one of my favorite toys of all time.
My brother actually has his complete G1 overlord in the original box (the box is not in the best condition) tucked away in his attic , kept safe since the 80's
so dope. as soon as life stops beating me up, i am definitely rejoining the patreon squad.
Happy Holidays, Michael! Thanks for these love letters toour childhood.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. Hope things settle down for you and you have a wonderful Christmas.
You did awesome on all years of the transformers, great work and you got a new subscriber!
Thank you! 🙏
A great era to collect. Glad i still have all of mine. Really enjoying these longer video's
Thanks!
Even as a kid, I recognized the huge downgrade in quality. G1 was die-cast metal, and by the time the headmasters rolled around, everything looked and felt cheap.
6:59 That Transformer reminds of a meerkat from Meerkat Manor called Yossarian.
I always enjoy a visit to the Michael Mercy Toy Museum! 😁 Man, Siren, Landmine, and POWERMASTER OPTIMUS PRIME were my three big scores from this year, back when I was a wee lad. Really takes me back.
I loved this new Prime sooooo much!!! My brother even used cardboard boxes to make me armor so I could look like HiQ.
I always love the little inserts you do, taking dialogue from one spot to repurpose over different footage! I've done a little of that to my own Transformers on my channel. :)
Another amazing video, man!!! Looking forward to the next!!!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed.
This was a truly depressing time to be TF fan if you liked the show.....because there was no more show.
I love 1988!!! I was watching Season 3 of the cartoons, and the next year the REBIRTH was shown on singapore channel 5. We were introduced to the Headmasters and Targetmasters
Thank you for such an awesome work !
Thank you, that's very generous of you. Glad you enjoyed the video. Have a lovely day!
1988 was the last year of G1 that I was really into Transformers. For 89-91, it was all TMNT, GI Joe, Kenner Batman and Nintendo.
Brilliant Mr Mercy, as always Brilliant !!!!!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Hey Mike!!! Awesome video as always.
Thanks! Happy you enjoyed it.
Still have this toy

The Comics were excellent but also remarkable at the time and did a great job keeping the boys in the loop here in America. Good times Also You never Disappoint Micheal! Excellent review and video! Also Just brilliant, Also Best Toy Channel ever. Also Excellent Shout outs to some of the websites that have mastered the power of Transformers they are:1.TFwiki with a database resources on Transformers that would put Teletran One to shame,2.Botch The Crabs Box Art Archive with beautiful clean unadorned scans of G1 Transformers Box Art as well as Catalogs, 3.Seibertron.Com featuring many beautiful galleries of Transformers also looking at these pictures is still the next best thing and Big Bad Toy Store with over 30 pages of officially licensed Transformers items, Also thank you for sharing Micheal, All I can say is: keep up the good work stay safe out there in Canada, Have a goodnight, good luck, God bless, Have A Merry Christmas, Nerdmaste, and until next time TILL ALL ARE ONE or should I say TILL ALL ARE FUN.🦸🟢🙂🇺🇸🏋️🇺🇸🇨🇦🌆11:10 pm.
I really like the concept of Masterforce. How cool would it be to become a Transformer? Too awesome to describe in words!
that’s probably what several kids in the 80’s had dreamt about
Was alway's a Fan of Gen 1 Transformers so when I found subbed/dubbed version of Headmasters I was happy about that. Gotta check out Super God Master Force.
Spaceship Bruce! 😆
Great job, I can't imagine how much time and work this took.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
18:35 I remember seeing this at Toys R Us and meant to get it but didn't have the $$$ before it sold out. My cousin had the original US version so it blew my mind to learn that Japan had a better version of the same toy.
41:11 Submarauder!! I had him as a kid, he was one of my favorites and always ended up in the pool, or the bath tub. I still remember coming home from school with him one day and having him jump in and out of water that was running along the curb on my street.
42:44 I also had Finback as a kid rofl. I just liked Robots, Monsters and water back then so hit fit the play pattern 😅😂. His vehicle mode was a bit better then Submaurader's.
44:41 I had all of these except for Catilla. Snarler was always my favorite and I still own him today. Carnivac my friend got me for my 8th birthday and I forget when I got Chainclaw.
46:58 Annnnd I had Roadgrabber too lol. I guess I'm just in that generation of G1 kids who grew up with Pretenders alot. 🤷♂️ Roadgrabber was cool, but the clip on the one fin cannon broke as a kid which made using it impossible. I've since sold him but got Gunrunner and he's pretty fun. ToyHax also sells an upgrade sticker sheet for Gunrunner with new stickers to help better match the box art depiction of him.
If you are a kid that was like 7 or 8 in 1984 when Transformers came out, seeing stuff like Pretenders 4 years later had to be a shake up, but for younger G1 kids like me we grew up with Pretenders. I still think they are fun toys if not weird transformers.
Lucky!
14:40 i appreciate that.
Then most annoying sound in the world always makes me laugh😂 Thanks Mike! You rock!
Thanks Jake! Glad you enjoyed it.
Your videos are the best! I hope you have a Merry Christmas! 🌲
Thank you! Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas! 🎅
I cant wait for 1989, mostly for Star Saber.
Another epic edition of transformers history and goodness! Please keep up the great work🙏🏼. At 26:18, which company makes that mad max v8 interceptor vehicle?
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. It's a Scalextric Ford XB Falcon.
@@MichaelMercythanks, I’m gonna have to track that one down 😎👍🏼
I remember getting Bomb-Burst back in those days. I didn't dislike it but at the same time, it was the first Transformer I had ever gotten that was...disappointing.
These last 3 years in G1 felt so odd. Since really Optimus was the only one who was there since day one. (Besides 1986, but he was still in the Mail Away orders)
Plus 4 Classic Pretenders in’89.
@@MichaelMercy completely forgot about those lol
Great video!!! 1988 was certainly a wild year for the robots in disguise. The comics were excellent at the time and did a great job keeping the bots in the loop here in Australia. Good times!!
Thanks! Happy to hear you enjoyed it. The comics that year were great!
i had read some of the power master series! there was one comic that advertised a power master galvatron!
Now that's an overpowered Transformer! ⚡️⚡️
Lol " it's great to be baaaackk"
Love masterforce now
But back then i got power master prime, horri bull, fangrey, night beat (who I actually like)
Nut ginri is awesome in the G1 series
Great review of all the Transformers toys of 1988. The lenght of the video is absolutely justified. I definitely appreciate how thorough the video was. Lots of great information of each robot. Those were gorgeous toys! My favorites were Doubledealer and, of course, Powermaster Optimus Prime. Good job!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Powermaster Optimus Prime is the only original 80s Transformer I have still in its original box and styrofoam... and @MichaelMercy was purchased on clearance at Zellers 😉
The Law of Toyland! 🧸
I don't remember those headmaster transformers at all. Maybe because i was getting into video games heavy and riding my BMX bike.
Yup, Nintendo and Sega did a number on toy interest in the late '80s.
Never knew about these cassets
Cool video! Fun fact: Dogfight was supposed to be a Decepticon and Windsweeper was supposed to be an Autobot. The Autobots had chromed springloaded weapons while the Decepticons had "motorized" colorised plastic weapons. But then they mixed them up for some reason. You can also tell by their headsculpts, Dogfight definitely has a Decepticon facial expression. Also, Overlord was first envisioned as an Autobot (Cybertron). That's why he has a friendly, heroic looking face.
These always seemed vastly inferior to the designs from Diaclone and Microchange. Many looked like Fisher Price toys.
This was the year I really started to lose interest in Transformers. I only had some of these toys, none of the Pretenders. I do still have some of the Micromaster toys. I didn't really get into Generation 2, and I only got back into Transformers during Beast Wars.
Hahahah. Theo Von as Quickswitch. Lol. Nice. Very nice😊.
😆
Great video! 🖐🏼
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
I think the Pretender inner robits were excellent designs and ahead of their time. Splashdown could have been repainted as Optimus Prime.
any way tansformers masterforce the double trailerr gimmick the first trailer body for a big robot second for body armor for big robot reminds me of a brave robots concept the same with transformers victory.
Absurdly high quality choices for some of these insert voices. My favorite Death Wish 2 quote, even. Excellent. Norm MacDonald as a Pretender- extraordinary. Exceptional. Perfection.
I'm still utterly baffled by Hasbro not bringing Overlord to the U.S. I would have been all over that. Might have kept my interest going longer at the time.
Surprised they never did an Encore of him or Star Saber. Maybe the molds are gone.
I never put two and two together for the name of ‘Cancer’ the walking crab guy
I never knew about GrandSlam or RainDance before watching this video. It's cool how their individual contrasting personalities became a complementary whole when they combined into SlamDance. His undying determination for seeking truth is inspiring.
Bob could do so much with so little space in many of those tech specs bios. Truly on par with Larry Hama's GI Joe file cards.
15:15 and in the Marvel comics he was Marvel Jesus. 😂 😎👍🏻
We are in desperate need of a new Nightbeat.
Fans Hobby's Nite Walker is pretty nice and not too expensive for being a third party MP scale.
I could recognize some of the audio you used for some characters like Norm McDonald as Metalhawk, Zartan as Doubledealer and Mr. T for Skullgrin/Dauros but you think you could list all of the audio you used cause i don't recognize all of them
That was the late, great wrestler Big Van Vader as Skullgrin. It's Vader time! 🖖🖖🖖
I forgot I had Six Shot until just now. So disappointing.
Optimus prime being nice and caring and Wise is what we learned in school to be a hero not a muder is not what we learn at school
I'm surprised no one thought of bringing back Megatron as a Powermaster. He would have been a tank, though.
Season 5 that never happened.
Transformers, Mike Mercy and Norm MacDonald.
THERE IS NO BETTER COMBINATION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You mean Turd Ferguson? 🤠
@@MichaelMercy a.k.a. Dirty Johnny's uncle! ;)
I turned 11 in 1988 and did feel a weird sense of nostalgia already for the 1984-1986 version of the toy-line. Not having the animated series coupled with the toy line literally shifting into something else I just kind of stopped caring. I did buy the occasional comic book and a few more toys from the series in 1988-1989 because they did put out a few that did look cool, but my imagination just took over with what I had from that period and they just became something else for me.
My parents bought me this toy and it got stolen.
Lol, I'm used to Japanese version/name... Got confused with English name though..... I got the Takara Legend God Ginrai, my friend still called it Powermaster OP which I often argue with.... Lol
25:05 Nice 👍 you got all the monsterbots
I have Hori-bull. That was the last gift my aunt gave me before she died of cancer.
God bless her.
You’re right! You don’t have to want everything! And in the case of the Decepticon headmaster juniors, you’re wise not to! Squeeze Play is actually pretty nifty with better than average articulation. But Fangry was trash!
😆
Thank you Michael for the 1988 and final US G1 amd so much more.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.
Love how you dubbed the Anime clips. 👏👏👏
Thanks!
i always thought we were a year of 1.5 behind the states in Holland.. but we all got them here too... not a fan of the pretenders they lost me after target/powermaster.. early-mid early G1 is for me still the time to be alive i love the combiners
oh wow how did you find that commercial? never seen it before and i thought i've consumed all powermaster material🤣
also great video my friend!
This was the last year of the Transformers for me. It just got too strange with the pretenders for me and since the cartoon was no longer on. I lost interest. But a great job as always Mr. Mercy
Thanks! '89 still has some great releases, but you didn't miss much by skipping '90. Japan kept things going though. Looking forward to covering their exclusives for those years.

In the year of powermaster prime, piranhacon and overlord, my favourites are Quake and Crankcase, two absolute losers, for the longest time I even thought Crankcase was a Fiat Panda 4x4 because a Land Rover was too cool for him.
Fun fact in the UK marvel comic Catilla used to be a member of the decepticon’s Mayhem Attack Squad, but he and Carnivac ended up joining the Wreckers, but new members of the attack squad would kill him and Carnivac would seek revenge.
Japan had a way better 1988 than America when it came to Transformers. In fact 1989 was way better in Japan for Transformers too. The Victory toyline was awesome.
I was 12 in 1988. But the end of the animated series pretty much ended my interest in the toys. pM Prime and the Seasons were cool but never got them I did continue to read the comic until it's end, but I wish Hasbro would have imported the Japanese series and dubbed them in the late 80s. Would have been awesome to get 3 more seasons of TF and the IG voice actors would have been cool to hear. I still like HM, MF and Victory....but still would have been great back in the late 80s.
custom commercial bumpers are AwEsOmE
Thanks! So fun making those.
People gave a lot of flack to the Action Masters, but frankly I think the basic/beast Pretenders were worse. An extremely static shell housing a robot with a barely convincing or significant alt mode. Action Masters tried to give iconic characters more articulation as well as giving them nifty partners and vehicles that could transform in their place. It was a really neat attempt at making action figures for Transformers while the Pretenders felt like a whimper on the main figures. A lot of compromise made for the primary gimmick, if you would.
Save for the vehicle Pretenders, those actually complimented the central robot well. And the future Super Pretenders where the shell could transform and combine too was a MUCH better usage of the gimmick. It made sacrifices that were to the toy's benefit, especially since the core bots looked MUCH better in those later waves.
Mega Pretenders rocked. If only all of them were like that.
Why is Ginrai pronounced “Jinrai”?
In my opinion, “Gh-inrai” sounds way better, especially for “God Ginrai”, the alliteration sounds way better.
