Yup. Have to agree with that title. Both GM's old 4.3 and Fords more powerful 4.2L are undisputedly *GREAT* motors. Both *proven* to go 225k mi. & beyond even when run hard. However the Ford has the most amazing sound to it when up over 3K, and gets 3'ish MPG better economy. Ford NAILED it when they created the 4.2L. Only time will tell if the new crop of FOMOCO V6's will make it past 225k with great regularity.
+COYOTE ADVENTURES I’ve had both and I liked them both. But I especially seem to like the Ford more. The 4.2 sounds really good for a V6.
291,231 on mine and I due regular maintenance and I beat on the thing a lot. No smoking nor anything. Just sings to the Moon and holds. 4.2 v6 with an M5OD-R2 was a good but not great replacement for the 300 I6 ford.

I'll agree with you on that. I have a 97 F150XL, 4.2, auto, regular cab short box. Just put my Texas Classic Truck plates on,. Looking at exhaust options, although I do live in a "emissions" county.

Same 256 V6, but with a stockish exhaust, automatic. 1st gear has this strange whine. But I don't mind it. It's a fun drive still.
did your transmission blow?
If it’s an automatic the whine is normal, they came with it from the factory.

Hearing it in person it really does sound like a diesel at certain rpms. Actually the old 4.2 truck I used to have sounded similar to a diesel at low rpms too.
sounds awesome i wish mine was a 5 speed id do this but it being an automatic it wouldn't get its bark til 4th gear.. before that it'd sound trashy. yours is awesome

My first truck was a 99 f150 with the v6 and a 5 speed but mine was open header and was pushing 350k miles i only drove it for two weeks before it finally died now my buddy owns it and its getting a 5.0 coyote dropped into it

Sounds just like mine did with just having the muffler cut off before l had the exhaust replaced.
When dumping exhaust out of a flowmaster always add atleast 2 foot of pipe behind the muffler or else is just sounds like a gargling droning mess. I've had more exhaust setups on more vehicles than most. Trust me it would have a much nicer tone and would still be plenty loud. And if you have a cat switch to a high flow or none at all to really open the sound up.

When u turn off ur truck is there a hissing nose mien dose run grate but when I tune it off these a hissing even if I don't have a.c. on
All of them are like this even mine, it's just because the hvac system is ran from vacuum.

Cut the cats out and put a Flowmaster super 44 on it. I did mine and sounds great.

It's insane to think the 4.2 nearly made the same power as the 4.6
Well the 3.8 was basically just a 5.0 Windsor minus two cylinders. The 4.2 is a stroked 3.8 so I’m surprised they only pulled 202 hp out of it!

@@nickd.7267 well I say it’s based off a 302 loosely. The bore and stroke is different but its still a pushrod center cam engine and if you take away 2 cylinders in a 302 you get pretty much exactly 3.8. That’s what I meant.
@@CarGuyV8 Internally its more like the Buick 3800 than a Ford 302, and supposedly it was designed pretty much from scratch with a "competitive 3.8L V6" as its performance/feature target.
Another fun fact is that the original test engines were all aluminum instead of being iron block with aluminum heads, and the dimensions from those engines were not changed much when moving to iron. Because of this the iron block was much more durable than a more thoroughly optimized iron block would be. In short, the 3.8/4.2 block is better than most any OEM 302 block made after the early 70s for making big power... even though only a handful of 3.8/4.2s ever get built into performance engines.

I’m from Texas, just from a county without emissions. It’s got 2 cats and a muffler so it definitely should pass emissions.
Texas has a law on the books that states what came on the vehicle from the factory has to be on the vehicle. That being said it should not have passed inspection. However I personally think that law is crap and you should be able to do whatever you want to your exhaust. It is after all your vehicle not the States. Just an fyi on that law if you get caught with it altered it's one heck of a fine. Always do your research on state and local restrictions when modifying your vehicle. It will save you lots of money and possible jail time in the end.

I agree with you since there isn’t a v6 in existence that actually sounds good, however among all of the terrible sounding v6s, this one is the best sounding.

Yep I’m that guy get over it, sounds like poop. The only redeeming factor is that it’s 5 on the floor. Just get a 4.6, v6s are way too raspy and sound like trash.
