1:04 that's the stepdad, he got angry cuz the mum left everything to her daughters, who he then targeted. He was attacking the young sister, so Emily Browning tried to kill him. The stepdad needed her gone, so he used the "murder" of the sister as an excuse to have her committed (yes, death by bullet ricochet; that's a powerful handgun being shot for [presumably] the first time by a small, untrained girl. It's not surprising the recoil sent the bullet to the ceiling, which was actually pretty low, AND she was going for a headshot).

I know this is just cynical for entertainment purposes but I love fun trivia, and its a good time to share! WWI Biplanes were so terrible at what they did that they indeed were shot down by handguns. (The more common way was crashes due to technical or pilot error) In fact early dogfights were literally just pilots shooting at each other with handguns or even throwing bricks from the cockpit, and the term "Ace" originated from the time for when somebody actually managed to shoot down a single plane! Not defending the movie, but Babydoll had more of an advantage than most planes in the sky because she was not moving in a pretty unreliable biplane when making the shot.

Fun fact: Babydoll's sword engravings show her entire story, from the incident at the beginning of the movie, her fantasies, all the way to her lobotomy.
Also, the covered songs in the soundtrack are sung by the actresses so that it can further feed into their mental and emotional states when the song is played in certain scenes. They aren't just covered for the sake of it.
If these small but amazing bits like these don't convince you that this movie had incredible care put into every detail, and isn't just some lazy action movie out to showcase fetishized women, then boy is there something wrong with you. There are so many new details from the sets and the story that you can discover when rewatching the movie several times. It's always a new experience for me each time I watch this movie; it never gets repetitive.

Actually, vibrators. It was usually referred to as “female hysteria” and that was resolved using vibrators, though that depends on the time
The time this movie takes place in is as obvious as any anything else, if it’s the early half of the 30’s at the latest, it’s a decent chance anything would be written off as ‘female hysteria’ so she’s sent to an asylum because she’s troublesome to her parents, similar to the fate of Jackie Kennedy
If it’s later, it’s still probably because her family can’t deal with her acting “unseemly” by being ambitious, having OCD, having anger management issues, sleeping with men frequently, sleeping with women ever, or not being proper enough in the management of her appearance. None of these by this time would be explained by ‘female hysteria’

I must admit that after watching SuckerPunch for the first time, I was very confused as to what was going on and which reality was [in fact] real. I gave it another go and finally understood the reason for these multiple realities. In the beginning of the film, it was explained that the Therapist used a specific “Polish Therapy” technique, which allowed the patients to create their own reality to escape their actual situation. The brothel reality was something that the girls at the asylum collectively shared because they were being sexually abused by the staff and it was the only way they could make sense of what was happening to them. The action packed scenes were just a continuation of escaping reality. Almost like a “dream within a dream” shtick, haha.
Regardless, there is still a lot of confusion in this story as you’ve mentioned. Especially, the relationship between the shady Staff Leader and the Therapist… did she actually know what was going on or not? Lol Great video!

    • @HERscourge
      @HERscourge 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

That's one way to read it.
I took it that it is about Dissociative Identity Disorder caused by her abusive father (who likely killed the mother and was sexually abusing the sisters in the beginning). She's brought to the mental institution, and we get a hint at what is going on when they are being shown around, and essentially what happened to "Babydoll" is being discussed about the patient "Sweet Pea", who is all alone in the room.
Long story short: all of the girls are personalities of the main character, who we are lead to believe is Babydoll, however....
Likely the majority of the film is actually happening DURING the lobotomy, which is why we get a mix of memories and fantasies going on simultaneously - the lobotomist is literally destroying her brain.
However, I think we see the truth at the end: after all of the personalities have been killed off except Babydoll and Sweet Pea, the Babydoll pesonality sacrifices herself after helping the Sweet Pea personality (the actual main character) get away on the bus, implying that it is still "alive" in what is left of the brain, although unable to communicate with the outside world, it will continue in the fantasy world of its making.

I really loved this movie as a kid. When I first watched it, I was too young to FULLY understand what was happening, like the meanings behind everything. This is definitely a movie you need to watch a couple of times to grasp what is actually occurring. Even as a kid though, a bunch of stuff made sense to me. Like the fact that all the "battles" were in her head. As I've gotten older however, I've come to fully appreciate the movie for all of it's meanings. I dunno, it's just. It's really not that hard to understand some points. Like if an 8 year old can understand SOME of the meanings, I'm pretty sure the rest of you can. Again, this is a movie you need to watch multiple times to grasp everything. After learning the full meaning of movie, I re-watched it and I was left fucking stunned. man in beginning is the father or step father and he commots her bc her mom left her everything instead of him so he commits her under blame of sisters death. the rest of the movie is in the asylum. the play and all the other setting adjustments are symbolic representations of her repressing all the things going on the asylum to the girls. they are sexually abused so everything takes on the whore house feel. the whole play aspect is due to the therapy sessions we see in the beginning. all the characters shown during the intro of the asylum reappear in each of the crazy aside stories. in the end she sacrifices herself to save another person and lets herself be labotomized
the "dancing" is how she internally repressed her sexual assaults, shes basically imagining the sex scenes as dancing and when it gets too real for her it falls further into the big battle scenes. we know this due to the seducing the cook scene
whole movie is a 2 layer mental repression of reality being represented by over the top symbolic fantady scenes
the movie is hard to follow without multiple viewings because after all its from the perspective of a mentally disturbed patient thats trying to cope with the accidental death of her sister (redemtion through saving another), the abuse and forced imprisonment by her father figure who didnt even care about the mother dying as much as the will, being forcibly institutionalized in a place full of abuse both physical and sexual, all under an escapist mental state while still trying to be present enough to actually escape or help an escape. she lets herself be used and abused to help the others bc the guards seem more interested in her "dancing" (sexual abuse and focus mostly from being the new girl). it also appears that when the main doctor isnt around they let ppl pay to whore them out. the dr is mostly unaware of this and thus it continues, also why they visualize her as being not in charge until the end. she visualizes him in charge due to him being the source of her abuse

The entire premise of the dance being replaced with action scenes was the metaphor that the sleazeballs and abusers who are getting off to Baby Doll's dance in the film were stand-ins for the nerds at home/in the cinema who get off to anime girls doing crazy fight scenes... That's the Sucker Punch >.>
This film was a great concept. However things like the monologue from the High Roller which is only in the Directors Cut really should have been in the primary release version simply because they give some level of depth to other disjointed actions (the monologue is why he freaks out that Baby Doll wanted him to lobotomise her). Despite having a great concept it lacked in execution sadly.
The brothel is an invented reality of Baby Doll's to cope with the fact that she and the other girls/women in the mental institution are being abused by the male staff (this is shown by the fact that the male staff/visitors to the brothel have counterparts in the institution).

    • @coreybaldwin2500
      @coreybaldwin2500 5 ปีที่แล้ว +39

Yeah. I kinda always interpreted it as her dissociating to escape her life. First into the brothel to rationalize her situation. Then into a place where she doesn't feel so helpless and can fight. I'm always surprised more people didn't get that. Especially considering the rampant abuse this girl has likely seen and experienced at the mental institution.

So if the brothel is imaginary then aren't the guys who are getting off to watching her dance also imaginary? And does that mean that she actually helped one of the girls escape? Or did she imagine that she did?
Because a movie who's purpose is to sucker punch nerds that like action scenes with girls seems like a pretty pointless movie, especially since it's too unclear to unstand that that's the intention. It's not a sucker punch if nobody knows they're being sucker punched...

The film is a better story with more complex layers than inception (which was portrayed as something far more complex than was delivered) and better visually than most. The sexually provocative themes serve the deeper narrative of claiming a womans sexual appeal and utilizing it for personal gain in the way a man would use his physical capacities to dominate those around them. Not exactly meritable for either gender but it has relevance nontheless. 138 reasons to show how you were not intelligent enough to grasp the modus of this film.

I firmly believe this could’ve been an AMAZING movie it it had been done better. A girl in a terrible situation retreats into her own mind where she’s faced with a similar harsh reality BUT she has a means of escaping the fake reality, unlike the true reality. So she makes up this part about dancing that she’s really good at, but she’s not actually a good dancer in the true reality, so instead she envisions them as fight scenes because those are easier for her to choreograph in her mind (same here) which leads to the various third realities. If the movie ended with her winning the day in all three realities, that would be a really cool twist. And if not, it would be a Fran Bow ending, where she retreats fully into her imaginary world with all the other happy orphan stripper-dancer-fighters.

Yet somehow unique that in her madness at killing her sister when trying to save her and becoming insane, she manages to save another girl before finally giving in to the idea she won’t have to experience or feel anymore of the world she’s trapped in. Pretty f’d up film. I did not consider it a badly made film, I was just surprised they would want to tell such a sad story, and use such cliche action as a way to trick people into experiencing that sadness. Didn’t realize so many people didn’t recognize it, it hit me near the end and I was kind of upset at having to had to watch that yet impressed. I guess that’s a good thing people don’t usually see that. Maybe I need therapy. :-(

Goku teleports with instant transmission, and the Flash takes 3 seconds to travel back in time to arrive in Manhattan the second before the race starts. Who wins?"
I let the class talk about it and went back and forth with them discussing their ideas.
The WHOLE FUCKING TIME there was a girl in the back of the class FUCKING CHANTING "no one cares." Read the room. People obviously care. You don't speak for everyone. You've apparently made it 14 years without learning the concept of "0."

I went from watching this on my TV to watching this on my laptop... because I have to Sin the Sinner... so here it goes:
Sin 1 - "This guy shakes his head like we're supposed to know what it means." (Not 30 seconds earlier you see a frail and obviously dying mother in another room with the Doctor. Had you paid attention instead of groaning about the music, you would have seen it.)
Sin 2 - "Um... this is the same angry Lawyer who just got p*ssed at some dead guys will, right?" (Wrong, it's the Stepfather. He was written out of the will because of how abusive he was, so everything went to both of the Daughters.)
Sin 3 - "His immediate thought it to go rape some boarding house girl?" (Wrong again. First off, Stepdaughter. Second, not rape, kill. Just because someone grabs someone's shirt and tears it in a struggle doesn't mean they intend to rape.)
Sin 4 - "Then he turns around, to go rape someone else." (Ugh... the other stepdaughter. And again, not rape, just kill. If anyone paid attention to laws these days, you'd know that if both girls were to die or be otherwise incapacitated he would stand to inherit everything.)
Sin 5 - "And that one guy is kicking something." (Please... now you're stretching it. You SEE the younger girl shut the door and lock it. He's kicking it in. You might be bored, but please keep up.)
Sin 6 - "She's a Stormtrooper level shot. She is 5 feet away from a pretty large man, and STILL misses!" (She missed intentionally. Throughout the course of this movie one thing remains constant: She is opposed to hurting people... in reality. Not her day-dream sequences.)
Sin 7 - "So did the bullet ricochet off the light bulb..." (Let me stop you right there. The Stepfather killed the little girl, not the bullet. You've seen so many movies of questionable quality sometimes I wonder if you don't start off with your belief strained from non-suspension.)
Sin 8 - "I have no idea what story these two individuals told police..." (Growing up in an abusive home, it's not a stretch for the true assault victim to get blame laid on them by the abuser. In fact, it's common for abusers to be very charismatic as it is a mainstay staple to avoid getting caught.)
Sin 9 - "I have no earthly idea why she's being committed." (Because she's being held for psychological evaluation. Her mother dies, and within 10 hours at most her sister ends up being killed. She gets the blame and is projected as a danger to herself, possibly believed to be having a psychotic breakdown which actually explains the rest of the movie. I'll give you the TL;DR version: She is having a psychotic breakdown and disassociates herself from reality, and as things get harder for her she ends up retreating even further into herself.)
Sin 10 - "What the fuck is going on? No seriously, what the fuck is going on!?" (I'm just going to spell this out for you: The setting is actually 1950, and lets just say that the Mental Health facilities aren't exactly the best. In fact, it was an unfortunate truth that faculty often raped, abused, and mistreated the Mentally ill. I don't care that this movie is a work of fiction, some of this actually does have basis in reality, and as an avid fan of yours am morally appalled at the jibes you are making about implied physical abuse and rape. That's like if I were to watch A Clockwork Orange and tape myself laughing at the graphic rape scene at the beginning. Just because both are fiction, does not make it something that is in any way something to joke about.)
Sin 11 - "You learn that this is nothing more than a stage play." (No... this is just how they are all seeing it. It's a rewind to just before the main girl actually comes in. It IS a MENTAL HOSPITAL. Reality is 90% perception, and in the eyes of mentally ill women... being told to go on stage and perform their traumas and project their fears in a 'Healthy' environment could be perceived as putting on an act. And how they're treated by other staff only helps fuel their delusions into something noir-esqe and devoid of hope. Which reminds me...)
Sin 12 - "You can make out the faint colors of her clothes, but otherwise everything else is black and white." (Look up mental hospitals from 1950. Black and white, or severely muted colors. It was believed that they could control outbursts by controlling the environment. By allowing less stimuli to agitate, there would therefor be less agitation. It wouldn't be for another 20 years they realized it wasn't color that would trigger episodes, but the loss of control and freedoms. So... yes. Muted colors because that's how it was. Plus... it's a contrast of characterization. You can see her because you are meant to see her, but the world around her is bleak and devoid of salvation.)
Sin 13 - "This is a needlessly complicated way to run a whorehouse." (Simply put, I do agree. But, nonetheless I still Sin you sir. Looking at it from reality, this is how they're being treated. You have staff that are abusing and raping, and quite possibly letting other people do the same to them, will probably put the delusion in their head that they are whores. Or, they're simply being told by some staff that they are whores.)
Sin 14 - "What kind of fucked up fucking brothel is this!?" (She is their therapist. She wants them to see how they can be better, they do matter, they have purpose. The issue is easily seen in any abuse victim. People ask them 'Don't you want more out of life' and simply put all they hear is 'You are good enough to get what you want'.)
Sin 15 - "Here she is again, not dancing at this point in the song." (She is dancing, this is a deeper layer in her mind which she has gone to in the attempt to block the outside world. Her disassociation allows her to "Auto-Pilot" her way through events that disturb her, giving people what she believes they want from her and suffering little to no damage to her already fragile psyche.)
Sin 16 - "She survives this... or gets kicked back a level." (Neither. The obstacle is merely represented in her mind as something she can physically fight. Though, because her current predicament feels life threatening, but ultimately is not, it cannot actually harm her. In the end, she'll either fight or flee from the issue.)
Sin 17 - "Where did she get these Neo powers?" (People suffering from disassociative periods can in fact believe they can fly, punch meteors or whatever have you. And since right now she's very deep in her mind it would not be beyond the realm of understanding that she is reacting in a daydream like fashion.)
Sin 18 - "She seems incapable of day dreaming up anything positive." (Of course not. Her mom died days ago, her sister was murdered, her stepfather had her committed, she's been raped at least once... need I go on? In real life had this happened to a person in the time span it's happened to her, we'd be wondering what the hell her willpower is made of, because many people that even have 2 of those happen in a short time frame often kill themselves.)
Sin 19 - "Why the dances always show up as battle scenes." (Tell me... if I used you as a sex slave and forced you to dance for my sick amusement... wouldn't you have to fight some piece of yourself just to do it? It's a representation of having to survive a daunting task. Not life-threatening, just daunting.)
Sin 20 - "And now for no reason, here's Saturn in the background." (Because she's in an alien setting... no pun intended. She dances in front of the other girls, in their practice room or on the stage, not for some sweaty cook in a kitchen. It's not somewhere she's used to and therefor it's alien to her... or foreign. I'll admit this director beats you over the head with how much symbolism he uses... but hell, I thought you of all people would get that one.)
Sin 21 - "Is the rampant murdering without consequences supposed to be a metaphor?" (In this instance I'm going to quote another movie... Beautiful Creatures: "There's more than one way to kill someone." Let it be how it is, because what's actually happening is not as important as what is being perceived as happening.)
Sin 22 - This one is just a bit on a personal level. I want to point out I didn't Sin everything on your list, by my count you had 116 more than me, so obviously it was not your video nor your sins that rubbed me wrong. It was the lazy, distasteful disregard of some of the scenes and the basis in actuality they had. This film, though one of my favorites to be honest, I will honestly admit is NOT a masterpiece. It's a B+ at best. On the outside it is a fairly nonsensical, off-the-rails roller coaster ride straight to the depths of hell and does not make much sense even when it's explaining itself. Let me be clear, concise, and for god's sake understood here... the reason this movie is one of my favorites is because I am a Psychology Major, 8 years of it. Abnormal Psychology Major, which covers Disassosiative disorders, Sociopathy, Psychopathy, and Criminological Psychology... with a minor in Occupational Psychology. This is relevant because this movie, whether it intended to or not, is critically interwoven with one very real fabric: Mental Disorders and their deteriorating effects.
Even though I will admit this movie is not exactly the best, when you use something that people truly suffer from, and is a fairly accurate representation of their disorientation and disconnection from reality, as something to poke fun at.

There are a lot misunderstandings going on here. Hopefully I can clear some of these up for you guys.
I think a lot of the problems with Zack's movies stem from him not having a mentor to teach him the formal art of storytelling. Being the director of his own scripts means he doesn't have access to valuable criticism of his writing. Which in my opinion is his weakest point.
Much of these sins are beginner writing mistakes. The biggest one that stood out to me was a failure to show logical progression of shots that make sense to the viewer. Eg. Showing what happened, then displaying reactions. Or in extreme cases using narration to explain transitions that would otherwise make no sense(cutting out a dance scene and replacing it with a CGI battle scene).
The second big mistake Snyder made was the inconsistency in his character's behavior. Eg. Not reacting to imminent death, breaking down in one scene and becoming a stone cold warrior in the next, etc. Or if it was intentional, it was never shown how these shifts occurred(referring back to his mistake with logical progression). There's also a lot of fluff writing, meaning dialogue lines that could be completely cut and not change anything. Granted, Zack Snyder is more known for his punchy, high octane action scenes that sell mostly off of spectacle value(which is why many of his movies are lacking in the storytelling department). But, you can't fault the guy for wanting to tell deeper stories of his own. Sucker Punch is actually my favorite movie to date. Let me hack through some of this gravel and show you the diamonds.
I want to start by correcting something that a lot of people seem to have a problem with. This movie is not about rape. And it certainly is not just some softcore porn fantasy escape fandom meant to please viewers just enough to make a lot of money. Yes, Rocket explains that they are victims to a business that exploits the girls for sex. And yes, it doesn't make sense to most viewers when they cut out a dance to put in a Hollywood CGI action/ fantasy scene. But, when Dr. Gorski tells Babydoll that they have no use for girls who don't dance, she means that this is the kind of place that gets rid of people who don't do what they are told. It's a story about tragedy and survival. And there is actually a lot of meaning and heart buried in this haystack of disastrous writing. I'm going to blow your mind when I explain some of the context of this story, and how it can only be put together by someone who personally understands why Babydoll's dances had to be represented by battles with giant stone samurais, robots, trench warfare, and a dragon.
One thing I can say for a fact, is that these battle scenes are not meant to represent a coping mechanism. If it did, then this would be a movie about living outside of reality(which doesn't help or really make sense to anyone). People in survival situations are not so weak that they have to pretend their reality isn't what it is. In fact, I don't think escapism is ever something we do to cope with tragedy. It's something we do to deal with being bored(but that's another topic). Instead, these fantasy wars are meant to be a literal representation of the epic struggle for freedom and survival. I'd wager there are very few people who have lived in the kind of hell this movie is trying to portray. However, this kind of tragedy is possible and does exist in the world today. I promise you, that if you knew you were about to be lobotomized in a week, the things you would do would surprise you, and terrify you.
As for why Babydoll exploded into passionate dance rather than covertly planning and stealing all the items she needed is a half mystery. On first thought, maybe she believed it was the only way she could buy the time she needed to pull of the thefts. But, certainly there are other ways she could have got the job done. If we take a closer look, there was a deeper meaning behind that choice, reflected in the theme of the story: angels. In the beginning, Sweet Pea narrates and foreshadows Babydoll's role in her escape:
"Everyone has an angel, a guardian who watches over us. We can't know what form they'll take. One day old man, next day little girl. But don't let appearances fool you, they can be as fierce as any dragon."
This is obviously a spiritual story. And dance is very much spiritual in nature. It's a way to find meaning in life through self expression. Angels are servants of god. They symbolize mercy, compassion, and justice. Personally, I'm not religious, but I am spiritual. (Appealing to the definition of believing in a greater meaning to life, not necessarily just religion). Which makes it much more interesting when people use metaphors like this. It's an attempt to define the concept of a celestial being as something more relevant to my life than I imagined.
Babydoll sacrificed everything so that Sweet Pea could escape. In that respect, Babydoll was her angel. There was no way both of them could have escaped. Sure, Sweet Pea could have sacrificed herself for Babydoll, but that's not how the story went. It had to be Babydoll, because she had nothing left to lose. And through her sacrifice the corrupt warden received the justice that he deserved. Unfortunately, Dr. Gorski was the only character who could expose the warden(which is why from a storytelling perspective, she had plot immunity and Babydoll couldn't have told her. Otherwise she would have been murdered and there would be no justice). Sigh... Zack just hire a real writer to point out these insane plot holes. Please.
But, it goes even deeper than that. The story blurs the line between fantasy and reality, by showing the old man who guided Babydoll through her trials as real. Though I believe this was a stretch to fiction, perhaps Babydoll's imaginary angel was more real and influential in her success than we realize. Sometimes people come into our lives that guide us and provide for us exactly what we need to continue on our own journey. And sometimes we're able to be that person for ourselves through our own imagination and foresight. This realization is why I find this movie to be a pristine work of art. It's an idea that if we muster the strength to fight for what's right and trust in our belief of a better future, that belief can become an angel in our own lives. The mind is a very powerful force. It can turn a desire into something tangible with enough focus. Whether that be freedom, survival, love, or anything you seek in life.

BabyDoll, as well as the others, are a figment of SweetPeas imagination. SweetPea couldn't save her sister (Rocket) in real life, it drove her insane, she found a way to deal with it and started her trip to recovery with the wise old man as her guide. Simple as that. And how is it that in her dance dreams she knows kung fu, is basically a superhero? You can't do amazing things in your dreams? I found the movie visually stunning, as believable as any Kung Fu/ Gung Fu wire work and just sat back and enjoyed the ride. I believe Keanu more then this girl but, hey she's a lot hotter then Keanu.

There are three levels going on here. The first level is where babydoll kills her sister trying to kill her stepfather who wanted their mothers fortune but upon her death the stepfather discovered she willed the fortune to her daughters and he was going to kill them and any scene taking place in a psychiatric hospital (including the lobotomy)
The second level is the brothel / dance studio. All the dancing and everything is meant to represent the girls going through the motions faking their way through therapy with the woman. (Probably in sweet peas head, as it appears she is actually telling the story)
the third level dance sequences are probably what is going through babydolls head while she’s dancing. (Or at least what she described as going through her head while dancing to sweet pea) the dancing yet again being these women faking their way through therapy.
It’s actually a common coping mechanism for patients in a mental hospital to imagine they are somewhere else. (So sweet pea imagining she’s a prostitute / showgirl would make sense) and her seeing the bus driver that took her away as a guide and salvation would also make sense. (Because it seems she was also falsely committed, and she and her sister were tormented) it also seems like the male orderly blue was selling sex from the patients to the other males running the facility. (As you see all the items they need as babydoll is on her way into the facility in the possession of the staff)
