My van was making a very loud whining noise when I turned my steering wheel to the right and left this morning - by 5:30 pm it is almost gone. I was looking on youtube for info on it and stumbled onto your channel and watched 3 videos on adding steering fluid and how to flush the air out of the reservoir. At 74 you'd think I'd know to do this stuff. Your videos were easy to understand and very informative. I'll probably have to replace my steering pump cause I do have a ps fluid leak that has been going on for at least a year now but these steps probably gave me a little more time before I replace the pump. Thanks.
Note often there is a metal filter in the power steering reservoir and over time its gets clogged. So the options are to 1. replace the reservoir. 2. remove it and clean it out, that would be to hose it out and then squirt a little brake clean or carb cleaner on the metal filter, then hose it out (or rinse it in a utility sink), then let it dry. 3. Is to leave it on, suction out all fluid spritz a little brake cleaner on the metal filter, let it sit for a few minutes then put some PS fluid in there, mix it around, then suction that fluid out. Partially fill with PS fluid, mix around then suction out. The idea is to get out the brake/carb cleaner. Now with CHF 11s running at $20 to $37 (big box store price), that costs a few bucks, and makes option one seem like the best way to go.
Love your videos. Learned a lot in the months since I found them. One thing I noticed in this one: When putting the return line back on the full reservoir, you could make it easier by first replacing the reservoir cap. That way the fluid won't be so quick to flow out.

To finally bleed the air out, I've heard you should have the car running and turn the wheel almost to lock both directions. Don't go all the way to lock. Hope this helps somebody. Thanks for a great video!
Thanks for the video. Just did this on my Audi S3, had no axle stands so parked the front wheels on the grass. Still could not turn the wheel so had to start and stop the car then quickly refill the reservoir. Seems to have worked, hopefully has not stressed the pump!

Save America No I did not, if you start the engine the fluid will probably shoot out faster than you can add to the reservoir. Just using the rack n pinion to suck the fluid in and push it out should do the trick. Thanks for your comment, cheers!
Great video. BUT it didn't work in my truck. 97 Chevrolet Astro van. I took the return off of the power steering reservoir and sucked all the fluid out of the reservoir and plugged up the reservoir tube so it wouldn't leak. I tried moving the steering wheel left and right but nothing happened. Then I turned it on thinking that would get the pump going and assist but nothing came out I would go back-and-forth with the steering column in the fluid level would go up and down in the reservoir but wouldn't pump. What's the problem?

At 3:37... The Pentosin formulation you are holding is NOT mineral based, it's synthetic. The formulation you speak of is CHF 7.1, rather than the synthetic CHF 11s. How do I know? Research. I own an old diesel Benz. I also happen to believe that putting Dexron III (or equivalent) ATF in older cars (pre -1985 or so) is akin to helping to microscopically deteriorate the internal seals on behalf of your bolt-on-part-selling mechanic. If you want a THING to last a long time, concern yourself with the FLUID that runs through it. If you don't want it to last long, who cares what fluid you use.
I also noticed that mineral fluid only thing vw 0002000. Been running all the stores, nobody knows anything about it as usual. I can only find synthetic fluids and only two syntetic fluids that meet the 0002000 standard. Do you have any info on 1) why they recommend mineral? 2) what will happen if you put synthetic fluid which also fulfill the vw0002000 standard?
There's an easier way. Just disconnect the hose from the reservoir at the pump, and let it drain into a bucket. Attach another piece of hose to the pump. Fill this hose with fresh fluid and put the end into a gallon jug of fresh fluid. Start the car and quickly (like 5 seconds or less) turn the wheel all the way back and forth, and shut it off. The pump will have sucked about 2 quarts from the jug and you'll have about 2 quarts of dirty fluid in the bucket. Reconnect the original hose and top off the reservoir, and you're done.
Would I be ok with just one bottle of those of what you used to do this change? I have some noise up front hoping I think this is it. Although I don't have any steering problems. I just know it hasn't been changed after 132k.
Don't you need to crank the engine so the pump works? The service info for my car says to pull the ignition fuse, and crank the engine while turning wheel side to side.
What about draining the system, fill with diesel and drain then refill with the proper PS fluid? Turning lock to lock at all times to push all the fluid out?
Personally, I would NOT use anything in the power steering system except for the specified fluid. With the cost of replacing a steering rack at say $1200 to $2500 now, I do not think it is worth the risk. If the diesel fuel causes gaskets to fail or leak, that would be a major problem and major expense. Either pay a professional to flush the system or just use a few extra bottles of spec power steering fluid to flush out the system.
Seems legit. But doesn’t the steering pump have to be active to circulate the steering fluid? How does the fluid circulate just from turning the steering wheel?
Good video and I dont think he did this with assistance of pump as the intake hose was off and now way care would have started without lots of noise. This is why i think he jacked car up to make it easier to turn wheels.
VW power steering fluid from the 90's IS ORIGINAL green from factory, you guys need to respect the VW p/s fluid norm which in this case, is the G002000. If you dont, you are putting in risk not only the pump, but the rack , the seals, basically everything. The amount of fluid in the whole system generally is not more than 1 L. In most cases, sits between .7 and .9 L. To do a flush like in the video it might be needed a bit more because he is waiting for the return fluid to become clean.

Hello, I saw some peoples tutorials and they actually run the engine to drain the fluid. Is it needed to get everything out or is it just a "faster" (and probably more dangerous) method? Some run it even dry. Are there different systems, for every system a different flushing method, or its basically all the same? I plan to flush the fluid on an Opel Corsa B, as the fluid is black and was probably never changed. Just don´t know if I should feed the system with new fluid while engine running or while off.
georg2010cz its easier with the engine running, but you dont have much control and it will drain out quick and you'll suck in air. Just do it like I did, a bit more work but you have more control. GL

you can also spot the return line because the line that supplies the pump has a high pressure fitting on it. the return line has only a clamp.

common after you turn the steering last time ,you connect all first then you top it up this way no lost and spill of expensive fluid .

can I top the fluid up with Dextron or generally market brand fluid? or the special Audi fluid?
Say I drove a couple thousand miles with brown fluid, without knowing of course, would it damage my pump?
