  • A team of cartographers and technologists sets out to accomplish the groundbreaking task of creating a complete virtual reconstruction of Everest Base Camp and the surrounding Khumbu Glacier as part of the 2019 National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Everest Expedition. Watch as the team maps the impacts of climate change on Mt. Everest in a way the world has never seen before to better understand the world’s highest glacier.

    A team of cartographers and technologists map the impacts of climate change on Mt. Everest. What is one thing you learned from this video?

    • @mls01981
      @mls01981 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I learned how much the Khumbu Glacier has receded over the study period.
      Previously, I've read that ongoing plate tectonic activity has increased the elevation of the Everest summit by about 1/2" per year. Has anyone studied to see if the Khumbu has also changed in elevation? I imagine that it would also have increased in elevation, but to what degree I have no idea.
      If the Khumbu elevation were increasing, then this study would underestimate the effects of climate change on the Khumbu Glacier (higher elevation would mean colder temperatures and thus less ice melt). Clearly "tens of meters" of glacier loss is hugely significant, far outpacing even 1/2" per year of elevation gain, assuming the whole Himalayan range increased at the same rate as the summit due to plate tectonics.
      Also, has the increase in the summit height meant that the Khumbu would see more or less snow? More snow captured by a higher peak should have increased the size of the glacier (and the study would underestimate the amount glacial loss due to climate change) , but if the snow fell elsewhere around Everest, possibly at lower elevations, then some glacial loss would be expected (and the study would overestimate the amount of glacial loss due to climate change).
      A fascinating topic, I'd love to learn more on the subject!

    What happened to the glacier when it erupted back in the 80s? There's nothing on it. When the mountain blew its top and sent all that heat up into the air did the glacier survive it or is this glacier new?

    • @garyyencich4511
      @garyyencich4511 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mt. Everest is not volcanically active. You’re thinking of Mt. St. Helens in Washington State which did indeed blow its top in the early 80’s. The glaciers on that mountain did melt and formed massive mud flows.
