  • @malakillah
    @malakillah 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    I'm surprised you never mentioned Denali. I imagine the incredible water pressure at Mauna Kea's base is what allows it to be so tall without crumbling under it's own weight. So it's got a bit of an unfair advantage.

    • @davidguthary8147
      @davidguthary8147 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Not really. Everest is definitely higher than Mauna Kea, but Mauna Kea is the taller mountain measured from base to peak. Therefore, saying Mauna Kea is taller than Everest is more like saying that a 3/4 full glass of water has more water than a 1/2 full glass.

    Mauna Kea isn’t the only peak on it’s island, plus there’s several other islands that form a clear elevated about the sea flood chain with it. If we’re allowed to count it’s height from sea floor level to peak when it’s part of a larger landmass, then Everest should get the same treatment and get the height of Eurasia’s elevation above the sea floor added to it.

    This is true. At the summit of mt. Chimborazo (actually a strato volcano), there's waaaay less oxigen than at the summit of the Everest, since Chimborazo is the highest point on earth, from the core up. This is why many places in Ecuador feel reeeeally high, because of the earth's bulges, the percentage of oxigen in those areas is way smaller

    • @rohitchaoji
      @rohitchaoji ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Is that true? I'd have assumed that the atmosphere and oceans bulge in the same way as the geometry of the rest of the Earth, and as such, air pressure and density would still be consistent with altitude.
