Ahh you youngsters! I am of the age that I was around for the quartz revolution. You have to remember, watches back then we’re first and foremost tools with which to tell the time, secondary was brand or looks. Everyone needed a watch. So, imagine that scenario where you have a mechanical watch that perhaps on average kept time to around 30-60 seconds a day and every few years you had to spend money to have it serviced and when that was happening you were without a watch as most owned just one watch. So, along comes quartz, all that was needed was to change the battery every year or so which was quick and cheap and adjust it twice a year for daylight savings as it was so accurate. This was a premium purchase back then, it was cutting edge and showed that you were living in the future, not the past! Man, who wants an inaccurate, prone to shocks mechanical when you can have this amazing technology that meant you never needed to adjust, wind or service your watch!
I remember the day I got my first quartz, it felt like I had stepped out of the dark ages! Oh and those were the days when people swam with 30m water resistance ratings!

So, if the watch is from a legit manufacturer, and the 30 meters is legit, you can absolutely swim with it. Dive with it even. 30 meters is about 100 feet, which is the limit for most recreational divers. It's fine!

I saw it in person 2 weeks ago, and the dial looks almost the same as the moonwatch. Is the omega really worth that kind of money? I mean how frequently would I have to service it if worn on occasion? The average service interval that is? How will it hold its value over time?

I intended to buy a new Speedmaster at some point...then the Bulova Lunar Pilot Moonwatch was released. I will never buy the Speedmaster. The Bulova is beautifully crafted, and the movement is a technological wonder. Frankly it looks just as good as the Speedmaster.

The Speedmaster Professionals have gone up so much in price that it's hard to say if they will hold their value. If you have the money, why not? That said, I get just as much satisfaction and pleasure out of my Bulova Lunar Pilot Moonwatch.
The back of the Bulova is even more beautiful than the Speedy. I do like the saucer subdials on the Speedy better than the Bulova's. However, the Bulova has a much nicer dial with so many levels.
If I were buying the Bulova, I would definitely buy the bracelet model. It's really a quality bracelet and actually reminiscent of the bracelet from my old circa 1971 Speedy bracelet, only much nicer.

Jory, you are THE TIME TELLER! It’s great to hear you discuss your respect for quartz movements/watches. I get so tired of hearing that quartz watches don’t have “soul”. I am new to the Hobby, and up until recently, my one and only watch was a Citizen Echo Drive, Perpetual Calendar, Atomic Time, with an E650 movement, Sapphire Crystal, 200 M water resistance, etc. Bottom line is it’s a beautiful timepiece with every feature I can think of and it was just over $300 when purchased new. I recently added an Orient Blue Ray 11 which I really enjoy, yet it runs around 90 seconds/fast/day, which is very frustrating. I just purchased a Seiko Presage Cocktail Time with the Power Reserver Complication. It’s an attractive watch and keeps fantastic time, running only 15 seconds/fast/day. Anyway, thanks for sharing your thoughts on quartz watches. Your Channel is fantastic. Your content is great and your presentation style is awesome! Keep up the great work!

My two quartz models are a Seiko Sportura chronograph SNAE65 and a Bulova Seaking 96B228 with the 262 kHz movement. The Bulova is accurate to 10 seconds a year!! I keep my Omega SMP and Speedmaster automatic time adjusted according to it.

The Grand Seiko quartz I'd want is the GMT limited aniversary model with the green dial. I like G-shocks (well the rectangular cased ones anyway). I wouldn't pay the price for one of the metal cased ones, but the one for $50 is a perfect beater watch. That Hamilton has always been cool. It's hard to get more retro 70's than that. There's a new Citizen diver GMT that apparently is only available in Italy currently. It's one of the few that has a GMT function but keeps a dive bezel. I don't dive, but the minute timer bezel is useful.

Hello Jory, wanna ask you a nerdy question. Do you align minute hand on your watch to position witch is corresponds to minute marker and seconds hand to zero position or you just skip this 'little things' and align it roughly?

Anyway, on my reduced speedy I've found in watch service manual(Omega caliber 1140) a notice about that:
To set the minute hand, turn the crown forwards or backward. To synchronize the minute hand with the small seconds hand, the minute hand should be advanced about 30 to 45 seconds from the desired marker. (This procedure is normal to the design of this caliber). The energy transmission from the movement to the hands goes through three wheels. The play between the theeth of these three wheels must be compensated when setting the time by positioning the minute hand 30 to 45 seconds fast.
And I should say that is a pretty hard to align it perfectly. So I'm wondering how many calibers got this behaviour...

I enjoy a “Ana digital”. I use many of the time keeping features. I really don’t see any need for mechanical drive. They are expensive to upkeep and wear out with use. A simple service bill can be 300$ in my country. Just give me a beautiful case with easy to replace quartz.

If anything, a quartz movement that has enough parts to warrant having jewels has at least a little soul. My favorite "soulless" watch is the humble G-Shock Square, just due to the history of the design.

  • @JanPBtest
    @JanPBtest ปีที่แล้ว

I'd say the Seiko 6M13 movement (known as "the dancing hands") deserves an honorable mention, it's just such a lark with 4 motors, 3 for the hands, one for the date. The hands are in a sense purely digital, each hand is driven separately and they advance in small "clicks": the second hand once per second (duh), the minute hand advances 1/6 of one minute every 10 seconds, the hour hand advances 1/6 of one minute division every 2 minutes. This gives the perfect illusion of a continuous movement but the hands never go out of sync, so e.g. the second hand always crosses "12" _exactly_ when the minute hand crosses a minute mark. The only dial which does go out of sync with passing years a bit does so because it's geared, not connected directly to a motor: the 24-hour subdial which is necessary for the perpetual calendar operation (the thing knew that the year 2000 was not a leap year too). There are videos of this watch on TH-cam but ALL of them show the incorrectly aligned hands (nobody RTFM as usual).

Water resistant numbers are not implying depth limits. They measure resistance to water pressure at specified depths. Those pressures can be generated on the surface by diving, hands in moving water etc

In the early 80's I loved the extra functionality digital quartz watches brought.
Calculator watches, multiple time zones, stopwatches with laptimers, temperature readout (I had a casio that did that) etc etc.
It felt a bit like the trasition from mobile phones to smartphones back then.
And in the 80s also swatch came and for the first time watches became very popular fashion statements.

A Jade SZSC005, SBDC063 Blue Coral and a navy blue dialled SZSC003. And a baby tuna SBDY055. In fact my first Tuna came a few years ago after watching you wax on it. Great videos truly keep it going. I know how you feel about tag heuer but everyone has a watch that got them into watches. For me it was my dad's tag, it was gift from my mom and he always wore it when I was growing up. It fascinated me and its the reason I'm into watches now. Since he passed I now own his old tag from the 90s and his newer one (both quartz). I wouldn't buy a heuer myself, but I love these watches.
