One thing that helps me with rockets runs and probably iron bombing too is setting your altitude warning to to when you plan on releasing so you don’t need to watch your altimeter.
I worked on that system, Lead Computing Optical Sight System (LCOSS, pronounced "locus"). Pilots were often writing it up for "drops bombs long", "drops bombs short", etc....now after getting some experience in DCS I can understand how it was challenging for them to "git gud" with it. Lack of adequate flying time has real consequences.
Real world training typically dropped 1 bomb at a time to get more passes at target. Also they used 50 lbs simulated mk-82. These were much more susceptible to left right misses due to wings not level or tweaked guide fins. The bombing computer and INS nav systems were what I maintained on the F4E. I worked the last two active F4E fighter bombers in the USAF. Our aircraft were slowly transferred out, some to become Weasels. Expected hit Circular Error of Probability (CEP) for the F4E with Mk82s was 50 feet. I've seen scoring film with the bomb going through the windshield of the target vehicle. Crew on that one was ecstatic about it.
I'm with you- designed for a big drop and out of there. Would be curious to see that kind of run-full racks on continuous. But now I'm smarter about the bomb drop procedures!
It isn't actually important where Jester starts tracking the ground clutter for Dive Toss. What matters is that he initiates the track before you line up on the target with your reticle and hold the pickle button, as this is what takes the radar range and sends it to the WRCS. Realizing this makes things a lot easier. Just start your dive, have Jester start tracking the ground clutter with the radar, then line up the reticle with the target, hold pickle, and pull up keeping the wings levelled according to the indicators on the gunsight.
So are you saying that it’s like the A-4? Basically, it’s where the reticle is pointed when you first press the pickle button and NOT where it was when Jester says he’s locked up?
I’ve had great results making sure they are one and the same. The spot the crosshairs are on when I tell him to lock is the same area it is when I hit pickle. Any other way it sends them flying. Still a work in progress though and a helluva lot more accurate than dive bombing with dive tables (for me at any rate). I can’t ever keep my speed and dive angle where they need to be
Great tutorial to support the stuff I'm doing today alternating with "ice on the lower back" sessions. Severe mush brain from that crap, but you covered the subject well enough that I boiled it down to a quick cheat sheet for practice. Hell yeah.
So in dive toss, you only need to lock the ground near the target to get target altitude. When you hit the pickle button the computer then takes the position of the retical for actual bomb release computation
Based on one account. Two F4s each with 12 mk82 did continuous drops. They dropped a pair each run. So 6 runs each. So they kept it up for quite some time.
I would pay a bit more attension to the ADI. You've seen on the solution calc how sensitive it is to sight mils vs. dive in angle. If you find youself in the dive to shallow, steepen up past the tgt for a few moments, then re-aim on tgt and recheck dive angle. If too steep, go shallow of the tgt for a few moment, re-aim on tgt again and recheck angle. The closer you can fly to the calcs numbers, the better your accuracy (assuming no wind!). Ideally you'll be on tgt, on angle well in adv of release. Then you time the pickle to roughly the alt and you should nail it everytime.
The F-4 has been a blast so far. I just tossed a plane down in Iran for a first flight and went off to try and intercept some MiG-21's (which went as poorly as expected with no idea how to actually do anything) and then I just came back and started flying around the airport with 40% fuel. The thing just has so much power, and it's awesome to throw around the sky. Today I'm going to start finally working through the tutorials, since I really like how Heatblur sets them up, especially with the F-4 where they've got Chief to interact with and your WSO in the back walking you through things.
I’m not sure if anyone else will find this useful, but I’ve been doing the math to set my radar altimeter to the MSL I should be pickling at. Gives a cue and a red light, but all my bombing thus far has been pretty close to shore so I don’t know how effective it truly is.
I wonder how accurate the radar altimeter is in a 45-deg dive. Does it measure a slant range? I think Jester should be calling out the altitudes in the dive. Maybe speed and dive angle comments when appropriate, too. So, if release altitude is 5,600’ MSL, Jester should call out “nine six…eight six…seven six…six six…ready, pickle” as you dive…in Direct Mode, anyway. The “P” in pickle should probably be right on 5,600’.
Nice shot - close enough for blast overpressure to do the rest! But here is a question - do we know if the other bombing modes work yet? But even if they dont, what is their purpose?
Thanks for this video! I'm a little confused with DT bombing. Does the bomb tables even need to be setup for that mode? Or does the radar do all the work.
Thank you Casmo for this detailed tutorial. I was swearing like a sailor last night trying to figure this bird out. You mention a manual for it, but I have looked on DCS and Heatblur's websites and for the life of me can't find it. Where did you get it?
Cas I have noticed Your Sight has a depression set when you DT. It needs to be in A/G 000 otherwise it doesnt cage to RBL, thus making it more floaty than usual
@@CasmoTV You might be right. I just relayed what Spudknocker said in his vid. And yes, his Pip looks lot less floaty. This way the pipper is slaved to Radar Boresight Line. but hey, You're the boss here. :)

Rad alt is not an accurate method to establish HAT (height above target). It indicates altitude straight underneath the aircraft so it could be fine in flat terrain but not on undulating or sloping terrain. I'm not sure about the F4 rad alt but in some aircraft the bank and/or pitch angle can also affect the rad alt read out.

Have you seen this vintage video? “U.S. Air Force F-4 Phantom Conventional Weapons Delivery (Bombs)” It’s how to do Direct Mode. According to it, you might be doing it wrong. You’re supposed to fly the zero sight line towards an aim-off point beyond the target. When the pipper crosses the target you release the bombs. The WSO is supposed to call out altitudes in the dive. Can Jester do this? “Eight six…seven six…six six…ready, pickle.” (8,600…7,600…6,600…5,600{pickle}). th-cam.com/video/Df-WR6AIezc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Yrv8ylxMVePbwWPi
