Thank you. I was using the Cage and CAA modes in a sloppy way, pressing all the buttons like when you didn't know the combos in Mortal Kombat. It's not well explained in the manual or the training missions. Now I understand how they work.
Thank so much for this Casmo, I was super confused as to why in the A/A training mission for example the tutorial kept recommending to have heaters selected before switching to CAGE mode. Now I realize that the weapon select switch also controls the search azimuth thanks again
Man I feel like a jackass, I've been struggling so hard with jesters radial menu when it's been hotkeyable this whole time. Between this and listening to you talk about landing the Hind in someone elses video you've helped me get back into DCS, and more importantly ENJOY returning to DCS more than anyone else.
The training mission that comes with the module allowed me to fire weapons; your video will make me understand what I'm doing much better!! BIG thumbs up! 👍

This 100%. Flying the phantom against mig-21s and mig-19s is ridiculous. I’m in a tight climbing turn with a 20 degree climb turning as tight as I can while maintaing 450kts. The mig-19 followed me through 3 full turns (1080 degrees), pulled lead and gunned me. There is no way a mig-19 is keeping up with that barber shop pole for 3 full turns and THEN pulling lead. It’s worse for the mig-21 If the AI aircraft are going to have super power climbing ability, then using the phantom as it’s supposed to be in a fight is a death sentence. I’d also add that in my fight, my phantom was clean except for 4 sidewinders and 70% fuel
@@mikeck4609 exactly. Had a 21 trying to land(wheels down, flaps, everything) so moved in for a gun kill as he was slow, he saw me and turned away so I nosed up at 600 knots and he still turned and out climbed me. Got him to over shoot and he proceeds into a turning climb and never lost energy meanwhile I'm full burner and lost all airspeed. The warbirds are the worst as well.
Thanks for something to help the new guys out. So frustrating with everybody making these advanced flashy videos right out of the gate showing off their skills in an aircraft they had for weeks in advance. Virtually no basic getting started simple videos on the F4 out yet.
This was a much needed tutorial about boresight or CAA. I noticed my radar to the right side cause I was on RADAR and I didn’t realize each setting had its own side to favor. So you should 1) acquire radar lock, THEN ready the weapon you want to fire. I also had issues with jester locking distant targets (25 nm) so I just maintain a MiG mindset and use the radar to see, and use my mk1 eyeball to close and engage
Great video! This is what everyone needs to watch. That’s pretty much everything you need to know besides maybe firing an aim 9 with the seeker tone and uncage if you want using the AA refueling button.
Great tutorial as always. What I must say from my experience, is that Sparrow missiles work differently than in other fighters. When you launch just after acquiring launch conditions, the missile will just fly straightforward. You need to wait 4 to 5 seconds after SHOOT indication.
Casmo, thanks for all these great Phantom vids, it must be a lot of work especially with the Kiowa around the corner. I hope you're not getting burned out.
Oh I’m beyond burnt out lol BUT I’m basically done with all the videos I need to make for KW and phantom and I’m about to start the new job so I’ll be away from DCS for a while. So it’ll work out. Edit: I have a German gaming friend (met him online in 2005 we play all sorts of games) and he also likes DCS - he is more of a helicopter guy so he flies me around in the AH64 (because I can not fly helis to save my life so I am the gunner). But my friend really liked the F4E and he wants to be my RIO and we did Mavericks yesterday for the first time, and managed to fire 3 agm65s each run in at the targets (APCs) and next time we meet, we are going to do Air to Air, so hopefully he will be slightly better than Jester, because I have been having problems with Jester as well (my American friend flying another F4E locks up the target using Jester and my Jester refuse to lock up anything..)

I am having a TON of fun with this old bucket. But (you knew that was coming) it's almost worthless against modern fighters. Yes, period correct enemies are still challenging, but doable. An F-16C with AMRAAM's is hopeless. At least for my skill level, and I am not a terrible cyberpilot. The impressive aspect is the bomb truck mode. The loadout menu is like nothing I ever seen. Air to ground is where this bucket shines. Even the aiming mode is visceral. You can feel it as you fly where the bombs are going to land. That's a strange sensation in a computer sim. I am looking forward to checking out all the new features in the Apache. Hope you head over to it soon . I will check your upload page to see if you've covered it yet. Again, well made and well conveyed information. You're the best!
Jester could not lock because you were in Heater mode. For the longrange Jester locks you should be in Radar mode. Thanx for this video. I watched a similar one in German.
All good stuff - Thanks. There seems to be a multitude of ‘Combat’ videos but, I seem unable to find a decent ‘tutorial’ video on how to land the F-4 properly. 1) Long, straight in approach & landing, 2) Overhead break & landing. Be great if one of the DCS Elites could produce something definitive to save me breaking my undercarriage so often. Bit ‘hit and miss’ at the moment 🤣
While I don't fly either the F-4 or F-14 it would be nice if there was a way to set Jester to *chill* mode or something. He's had a bit too many pep pills for my liking. Good content as always Casmo, looking forward to more Kiowa stuff

Missile pinky switch in controls setting got gun/heat/radar positions but also left/right positions. It doubles same functions. A bit confusing. To add to it, there's also reject position. But I don't know the function for it yet.
Depends, the missile reject switch on the throttle cycles through currently selected missile. And the lower TGT/MSL reject switch near the engine oil pressure gauges toggles mavericks/shrikes.
Could you explain a little bit more detailed how to employ the Aim-9 correctly? I have trouble with uncaging the seeker properly and get the high pitch tone. I don't know how and when to uncage it correctly.
One question about the CAA with Sparrows: Sometimes when I lock a bandit, the max1 and max2 range markers on the radar jump around, or are still above the target (= out of range) even though I'm only a few miles behind him. Am I doing something wrong? I don't understand the AIM7 being out of range at
At 7:55 Jester was responding twice, which means you were inadvertently hitting two commands at once/back-to-back or he was bugged. Either way it's clear two commands were trying to be executed nearly simultaneously.
Anybody help me understand what memory mode is? It’s very confusing on how the radar handles a dropped track - for instance after merge. It seems to hold a “fake” lock
Have you tried guiding sparrows in a flood mode? F4 doesn't have a dedicated one, but I've seen some examples in an ecw discord when people guided sparrows using some sort of flood technique, but, sadly, there wasn't any information how to achieve that Thanks for your work
@@CasmoTV it seems like it's possible to launch and guide a sparrow (with interlock off) using only a boresight mode, without any type of stt lock, by manually holding the target roughly insude your sight. It probably requires a correct set of "aspect" switch in a Rio cockpit. It should work even in a shoot down situations, where the radar can't acquire a target. Gonna test it later
@@CasmoTV alright, so here what I've discovered (I'll also write this info in a separate comment under this video for people to see): in an f4 you can guide sparrows without locking your target, granting a shoot-down capability inside a visual range. Here's what you need: 0. You need to have aim7e/e2/f. Aim7m seems to be too smart to work this way 1. jump to wso cockpit, turn aspect switch to "fwd". It is possible to get flood kills in a default wide aspect, but ranges become much shorter 2. Jump in a pilot seat, master arm on, interlock out, sparrows selected, cage mode active, don't push caa button 3. Put your target in a sight. Flood zone is about as big as your reticle plus somewhere a bit lower than its circle 4. Launch a sparrow. Aim7f started guiding at about 9 nm, aim7e2 a bit closer, around 5-6 nm. You don't have to wait for 4 seconds because no data is being uploaded into the missile 5. Hold the target in your reticle or slightly below it 6. Profit. I was able to reliably shoot down ai f1 flying about 300 feet above the ground from above
Hi Casmo! Great video as always. Just wondering though, what does the ARR button do? When I try in HEAT mode, I get a louder pitch sound. What does that signify? Thanks! (Also, any idea why sometimes, even when the AIM-7s are set up correctly and are armed, the head-up indicator for RADAR does not turn on, and it is not possible to fire the weapon?)
The AAR button uncages the aim-9, that's the louder pitch sound you hear which means the seeker is looking at the target. Next to the weapon select knob there is the CW switch, that basically activates your sparrows, you need to flip it to ON and wait a few seconds for them to warm up. Once warmed up you should be able to see "radar" when selecting them.
In my opinion the Aim-7 should only be employed at high altitude or in excess of 10- 20 degrees upwards from your view to terrain, so the radar locks are not great down low to say the least . So the second vid you have showed us where unable to lock the bandid is exactly an axample of the limited look down shoot down capabilities of the Phantom. You need to get co altitude or bellow them to have stable lock and Jester will be fine than. The Flogger was the true first look down shoot down one that could easily lock those targets below you . The Phantom is great but you will have issues if they are below and your altitude and you might get killed while trying to get a missile on them . I would invert at that point lose some altitude and than geti him to lock the bandit again .... ) So guys dont expect the radar missiles to be extremely effective in all ranges :) Its not a Hornet or a 16 By the way if you operate the Fishbed in the cold war servers you will notice same issue where you need to stay bellow them and get lock this way :) Great vid anyway, and I got the Phantom but really waiting for dome Flogger action :)
I may have missed it in the video (which was great), but what is the use of the AAR button? And is it possible to cage the AIM-9 seeker head to the radar locked target?
Thanks for making a quick and concise video on how to start some basic air to air in the F4. Honestly I don’t have time to deep dive into the systems of all these aircraft. I just like to have a basic understanding of what’s going on. My brain only has so much RAM and I have to keep most of it available for what I do outside the sim lol.
The gun trigger fires the sidewinder, is that supposed to fire sparrows too? I can't get the sparrow to fire with gun or bomb pickle button when it's locked by jester. None of these videos seem to make it that clear "what" they press to release the various weapons.
Very helpful video about the jester quickbutton! One question, so the cage buttun will be our pilot manual radar button. So there is no PAL or vertical scan and such acm modes?
Not when I fly it..but im not very experienced in it either. I can out turn pretty much anything…but pulling sustained g’s in a climb is something I understand the phantom should do much better. I’ve never flown either…I’m just going by what the F-4 pilots said and what was taught in the Constant Peg program (great book by Steve Davies BTW). 17. None could keep up with the phantom in a turning climb. With the Mig 21, it had to do with the energy bleeding caused by the delta wings. So you may be right. But either way, we all know that the Simplified flight model the AI uses allow the AI aircraft to point their nose in any direction and accelerate into it like an F-22
hey Casmo, could you test something for me? I spent several hours trying to narrow down the sparrow usage. I found that CAA locks onto random stuff, even if you're into a vertical. And those "flukes" that it locks are persistent, it doesn't lose lock on those. I think it's broken
Make sure your Flares Select switch is set to normal. If it is set to flares, it will disregard the CCU programmer and continue to dispense one flare per button press
no matter what i do, the radar cant pick up anything until ~5 miles and 7.5k - 15k feet. Its super frustrating getting smoked by a r3r constantly because i cant lock
If someone able to tell me if there's a specific setting that needs to be hit before Jester starts doing all of this because I've been flying the phantom for a couple of days and I cannot get him to acquire a lock on absolutely anything I can see targets clear as day on the radar scope they're above me with a sky for a backdrop et cetera et cetera. All i get from him is NO.CAN DO BOSS
Thing is, sometimes the radar spots a friendly aircraft before it gets an iff return. Usually that happens after a sharp turn/change of radar elevation. If you order jester to lock that guy, he won't tell you it's a buddyspike. Otherwise, if target has frindly brackets, jester will tell that you've locked a frindly plane after you've ordered him to do that. I recommend waiting a few seconds (about 5 seconds at the worst from my experience) before locking something if you've changed your scan area or the target appears at the edge of your screen P.s. basically if your target has been in a scan area for a few seconds and doesn't have friendly markers, you can be sure that's an enemy
Thanks Casmo! And great video. Yeah I got lit up after passing up a lock on the contention sever because I couldn’t verify if it was friendly. Be nice to know a little more about target identification with jester from the heatblur team
Yes. Everything is armed. The only time I can shoot is when you see all the lights around the hud to say fire. Heck the lights don’t even come on after he says to fire. It’s not making sense to me unless it’s bugged.
I dont think most people know how to use a/a . Buddies and i tried for hours with drones like you had. Sometimes jester will lock most times he wont. Then even if you get a lock, good luck shooting a sparrow. Maybe heatblur was trying to recreate real life, i heard there was all sorts of issues to the point they refused to even try using sparrow missiles. If thats the case well this is a video game and it should be fixed
It's 50/50 a couple times I had him lock people who where completely immersed in ground clutter other time he can't find someone 5 miles off my nose. My biggest advice that I see a lot of new player struggling with is that you need to hold the jester context button for him to lock
I have given up on the f4. I did the training mission. Followed the instructions. Got tone. Can't launch missiles. I am done. If I can't do a basic training mission, how can I do more complicated stuff. How can I learn on my own if I can't complete a walk through. I wasted $70 on this. Hopefully the naval version will be out soon, and I can do carrier ops. I will stick with the f18, a10 and f16.
IJust walk away for a day then come back. Clearly you are missing something. Catch your breath and come back fresh and try again. Way too many people are figuring it out for it to just be broken.
You did all that jester radar and acquisition for a lock just to shoot him with an Aim-9 heat seeker. Just shoot the heat with good tone. No radar lock needed.
Hitting cage in A/A mode and then the Nose wheel steering switch is a lifesaver. The old school boresite acquisition

McDonnell placed the engines low to make it easy to just drop them out the bottom during replacement
The elevons needed to be placed above that, to keep them out of the engine exhaust
At high AoA the main wing wake would interfere with the elevons and make them less effective
With the large anhedral (down sweep) the outboard part of the elevons are below the wing wake at high AoA --> better control
anhedral makes an aircraft less stable in roll, the solution is to compensate by main wing dihedral, about 3° should do it
The fuselage and wing box was already designed, rather than redo that, the engineers gave the outboard panels (would fold up for carrier parking) 12°
The humpback canopy came after the first test flights, to improve visibility

@@CasmoTV alright, so here what I've discovered (I'll also write this info in a separate comment under this video for people to see): in an f4 you can guide sparrows without locking your target, granting a shoot-down capability inside a visual range. Here's what you need:
0. You need to have aim7e/e2/f. Aim7m seems to be too smart to work this way
1. jump to wso cockpit, turn aspect switch to "fwd". It is possible to get flood kills in a default wide aspect, but ranges become much shorter
2. Jump in a pilot seat, master arm on, interlock out, sparrows selected, cage mode active, don't push caa button
3. Put your target in a sight. Flood zone is about as big as your reticle plus somewhere a bit lower than its circle
4. Launch a sparrow. Aim7f started guiding at about 9 nm, aim7e2 a bit closer, around 5-6 nm. You don't have to wait for 4 seconds because no data is being uploaded into the missile
5. Hold the target in your reticle or slightly below it
Once warmed up you should be able to see "radar" when selecting them.
is regulkar scan jester context short, long or dbl?
Double tap
I would invert at that point lose some altitude and than geti him to lock the bandit again .... ) So guys dont expect the radar missiles to be extremely effective in all ranges :) Its not a Hornet or a 16 By the way if you operate the Fishbed in the cold war servers you will notice same issue where you need to stay bellow them and get lock this way :) Great vid anyway, and I got the Phantom but really waiting for dome Flogger action :)
what year is this technology from?
50-60s
@@CasmoTV they had this moving radar back then? It must have been alien tech back then
I was hoping you'd tell us how to arm the cannon
I may have missed it in the video (which was great), but what is the use of the AAR button? And is it possible to cage the AIM-9 seeker head to the radar locked target?
Yeah I guess I didn’t add that in- AAR uncages the sidewinder
Thanks a lot! The in-game description is a tad vague :) How does the Air refueling button factor into this? Maybe I have just missed it in the video.
That uncages your heatseaker. I should have been more clear.
@@CasmoTV Thx! That very much alleviates some confusion I had about the "cage" button :D
Air to air- trigger.
Very helpful video about the jester quickbutton!
One question, so the cage buttun will be our pilot manual radar button. So there is no PAL or vertical scan and such acm modes?
None that I’m aware.
Nice tutorial very informative but one question is the AAR button used to drop lock?
No that uncages the sidewinder
Not when I fly it..but im not very experienced in it either. I can out turn pretty much anything…but pulling sustained g’s in a climb is something I understand the phantom should do much better. I’ve never flown either…I’m just going by what the F-4 pilots said and what was taught in the Constant Peg program (great book by Steve Davies BTW). 17. None could keep up with the phantom in a turning climb. With the Mig 21, it had to do with the energy bleeding caused by the delta wings. So you may be right. But either way, we all know that the Simplified flight model the AI uses allow the AI aircraft to point their nose in any direction and accelerate into it like an F-22
which aim 9 variants can be uncaged?
So if i shot all of my Aim 9, then I cant use the heater to scan the center?
You’re not using the heater. That’s just telling the radar where to scan.
hey Casmo, could you test something for me? I spent several hours trying to narrow down the sparrow usage.
I found that CAA locks onto random stuff, even if you're into a vertical. And those "flukes" that it locks are persistent, it doesn't lose lock on those. I think it's broken
It might be. Hard to know what’s really broke or what’s just replicating the age and efficiency of it.
@@CasmoTV feels strange, as the scan scope in those scenarios shows no clutter
For some reason I can’t fire my chaff? I can only fire flares, any ideas?
As long as chaff is loaded, the countermeasure button on the throttle will deploy both chaff and flares.
Make sure your Flares Select switch is set to normal. If it is set to flares, it will disregard the CCU programmer and continue to dispense one flare per button press
@@cakeadventure8412one flare PLUS chaff? Or no chaff?
@@Wheelman_PCAS No chaff when set to Flares and the light turns on. Needs to be on normal for both.
no matter what i do, the radar cant pick up anything until ~5 miles and 7.5k - 15k feet.
Some times he’s just lazy and refuses to work.
@@CasmoTV I guess they call it chair force for a reason 🫠
Neat! Thanks for the titbit! :D
Does Jester call out friendly or foe on a lock? May be a dumb question but I felt like jester gives more info in the f14?
Not sure. Maybe someone will chime in.
I recommend waiting a few seconds (about 5 seconds at the worst from my experience) before locking something if you've changed your scan area or the target appears at the edge of your screen
P.s. basically if your target has been in a scan area for a few seconds and doesn't have friendly markers, you can be sure that's an enemy
Thanks Casmo! And great video. Yeah I got lit up after passing up a lock on the contention sever because I couldn’t verify if it was friendly. Be nice to know a little more about target identification with jester from the heatblur team
I don’t understand when jester says, “1 potato 2 potato shoot!” And when I pull the trigger the sparrow doesn’t shoot.. ??
Do you have the CW switch on?
Yes. Everything is armed. The only time I can shoot is when you see all the lights around the hud to say fire. Heck the lights don’t even come on after he says to fire. It’s not making sense to me unless it’s bugged.
@@commanderstud2417 ok that doesn’t mean the missile is properly locked. I’m working on a video that may help with that.
The F4 videos are cool but I'm more looking forward to your future OH-58 videos 😬
Meh. If it was broke in real life it’s should be broke here. That’s the whole point.
@@CasmoTVthey were so broke back then haha cant wait to miss 3 out of 4 sparrows in my new F-4!
I have never swore so much at anyone or anything in comparison to what I say to jester. JUST F*CKING LOCK IT!
Yea Jester is a fucking piece of poop :) I had to use cage as well thanks for the helpful videos. Appreciate you taking the time to make this.
The same switch that selects weapons also changing radar scan zones is such an American thing...
Aight
Try this in dogfight with fast moving fighters.
Make tutorial please.
You first
Im not youtuber.
I think jester 2.0 is broken right now :(
Oh idk. He told me “gear up flaps up “ while I was diving in on a target. So idk what you mean 😂
It's 50/50 a couple times I had him lock people who where completely immersed in ground clutter other time he can't find someone 5 miles off my nose. My biggest advice that I see a lot of new player struggling with is that you need to hold the jester context button for him to lock
He's ok has his moments but can't be easy to programme and it is experimental pushing the boundaries stuff
now do it when youre both on the deck
No? 🤷🏻♂️
@@CasmoTV coward, lock him up on the deck
The point is to show the process and then you have the option to switch to guns or radar.
Except it never works
