    UPDATES + CORRECTIONS:
    - Vespids, Firesight Team and Pathfinders all CONFIRMED UNCHANGED. For The Greater Good has the EXACT SAME TEXT as the Index version.
    - Farsight got bumped up to eight wounds now from six (he's got a lot more durable between that and the 2+ save).
    - As per the balance dataslate rules that allow you to repeat a stratagem only work on Battlr Tactic stratagems (so no multiple jump shoot jump for the Puretide Chip). I forgot that there was that additional section beyong the 'modify stratagem cost' section.

      You know, I think that was supposed to be something that came over from AOS, but I also hear that is also a problem in AOS.
      So battleline/troops exist to make sure you are playing Chaff. Because without it, you basically have no reason to.
      However in AOS, there are too many ways to give good units that are not chaff Battleline.
      So I think we are seeing that they are trying to be more selective on who gets what with these 40k Detachments

    - Some good things here :being the buffs to Farsight, Stealthsuits are almost as good as Tetra's now, Sky Rays just nuke vehicles now. Feels good. Ghostkeel is unchanged.
    - Some things I don't like as much: The crisis suit changes are annoying, but powerlevel-wise are still very playable (espescially the flamer and fusion variants). Longstrike being gone. There not being a tank force or stealth army detachment.

    It's weird that they still persist in that wording for the 'free' Stratagem abilities when it's actually only for Battle Tactic strats. Why not just say that on the datacard? Not everyone is online all the time and it's tucked away pretty deeply in the core rules on the app.

    • @FlyingNinjaish

  • @pstuart17
    @pstuart17 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

    Do you have the new For the Greater Good wording? As written right now, it wouldn't work with the Mont'Ka Detachment rule, as you can only guide a unit that's eligible to shoot, so if you advance without having someone on the squad with the Assault keyword, they aren't eligible.
    I suppose if they don't have a wording update for FTGG in the Codex or following pts clarifications, you'll have to take a gun drone in everything so that SOMETHING on your unit has Assault and can be guided in order to use Mon'Ka's perk if you advanced that unit.

    Kauyon definitely seems to grant the Observing unit Sustained Hits 2 into the shared Spotted unit.
    FTGG:
    "Then select one enemy unit that is visible to both your units to be their Spotted unit."
    Pathfinder Target Uploaded ability:
    "Once per turn, when using the Greater Good ability, you can select this unit to be an Observer unit for a second time. When doing so, you can change which enemy unit is this unit’s Spotted unit."
    Kauyon (new):
    "From the third battle round onwards, ranged weapons equipped by T'au Empire models from your army have the [Sustained Hits 1] ability, or the [Sustained Hits 2] ability instead while targeting their unit's Spotted unit."
    Spotted units are shared by both the Observing and Guided unit which we see in the Pathfinder rule, "their" would mean the Observer gets the benefit too.

Any WYSIWSG complaints imho are just hollow and should be ignored
    Now it just all comes down to what the points are going to actually be, but if they are very close to the points list in this codex then the army is going to be great. A 160pt (assuming from the codex list) Sunforged unit with Assault+Lethal Hits+Ignores Cover & +1 to hit+Stealth Suit or Counter-Offensive hit rerolls+Full Wound & Dmg rerolls can more than consistently instantly destroy a land raider which no unit in the tau index could do before without throwing away like 500+ points.
    Also Starscythes with marker drones in Montka with double flamer and farsight attached while they body guard a single unit of Sunforged around the map seems so insanely strong for almost no points. Insane board control & movement, great activation spread, doesnt require support, insane vehicle/monster dmg (even ctans just get erased due to melta rules and flamers), god tier horde & marine dmg due to -2 ap FLAMERS and overwatch and all for not even a forth of a 2000pt army is amazing

      As a Tau veteren who's played them since the very 1st day they came out in 2001, I can honestly say we've weathered worse. There are many new opportunities for powerful units in the new book, for those who wish to seek them.
      Flamers and Burst finally have a purpose again. Double fusion gun is back to being the king of reliable anti tank firepower.
      Loads of classic combos coming back to the fore. I'm looking forward to seeing the old 'deathrain' loadout with dual missile pods again.
      The Fire Knife suits can swap their plasmas for a 2nd Missile pod each. Missile pods are still 30 inches. Commanders can still take 4 of 'em. The entire unit gets lethal hits for 4 turns if you take the enhancement. There are lots of ways to get full re-rolls to hit in while in the Mont'ka detachment, plus the Focused Fire stratagem lets them get to ap 2 while ignoring cover if guided.
      Do that while screening out the backfield and flying away from anything that does get close. Whe've basically re-created the Broadside Missile pod bunker but with way more manueverability.

The Kroot themselves cant use the army rule(which is why the detachment offers two rules for them: Damage and survivability), but the Tau elements in the army still benefit(the elements that helps with punching holes in big stuff, which then triggers the damage buffs for the Kroot).
      A single unit of Pathfinders can guide 2 other units, making them very efficient if you only bring a few Tau units, and their special weapons and drones also give them options that can help the Kroot out.
      For things that help punch hole in stuff, we have Piranhas, Hammerheads and Skyrays for fast, cheap and heavy hitting. Broadsides hit decently hard as well, but are not fast, though you could use 3 units of 1 to help screen your deployment zone while the Kroot rush forward.

    I know I'm late for the party... But while the pathfinders already got the markerlight keyword but still be able to get a marker drone, do they can mark 3 targets per round?

    • @fendelphi
      @fendelphi 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. The Markerlight keyword is simply an extra buff for when a unit spots a target. If the Observer has the Markerlight keyword(either built in or from a Marker Drone), the Guided unit partner ignores cover when shooting at the spotted enemy.
      The Pathfinder's ability to be an Observer for a second target is due to their special rule, not their equipment(Markerlights). For instance, the Strike Team and Breacher Team(and several other units) also have the Markerlight keyword from the start(meaning they can be decent Observers for other units if needed), but they do not get to spot 2 targets.

  • @MichaelEntwistle

    It's absolutely wild that kroot (and vespid) don't get the faction FTGG rule. The whole point of the T'au Empire is philosophy of better together, yet for all the love kroot get in this edition, there are zero rules to encourage combo play with the T'au.
    Either kroot should get the FTGG rule, or their own flavour of it. It really feels like two seperate armies now (especially as kroot need their own detachment to be any good)...
    There's a lot I like about this codex but the spirit of the greater good is really missing

      Well the Coldstar Commander buffs the movement to 12", so that is not really a problem.
      I have no problem with them removing the basic Crisis Commander, as it was not a standalone model. So for the sake of "cleaning up", it made sense.
      I still dont get why they keep the fortifications around though. Unless they plan to overhaul them in a major way for every faction, those datasheets are a waste of space.
      I would also love to see a rules update for certain units(like Firesight Teams) and a new basic character that can join Pathfinders and/or Stealth Teams.

      Terrible fixes for bad changes should not be praised.
      Hell, even OPR the game that sells itself as super simple 40k uses wargear costs. They had multiple ways of balancing CIBs they had used previously. But they decided to do none of those, and make one of the few model kits as flexible as the leman russ into 3 sheets with preset, barely changeable load outs. At least one of which you can't build out of the box.
      Furthermore, we are one of the most expensive armies to collect, specifically because battle suits are crazy expensive. Literally even GSC are cheaper per point. Nuking their usefulness and slashing the points along with it would put us at admech levels of financial cost.

    • @In_Purple_Clad
      @In_Purple_Clad 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Here's the thing with the old Crisis Suits ... ... ... as sombody who's played Tau from literally the 1st day they were released in 2001, the idea of infinite variety and unlimited loadout combos on your suits 'sounds' cool... until you play an actual game with them and realise you made the wrong loadout choice and are getting tabled by your opponant.
      I've seen that happen way too many times over the last 20 years. And over time all Tau players eventually gravitate toward the same few select builds that actually work - the ones that just so happen to be the ones GW are using for their new Crisis Suit units.
      Sidenote - there's a reason GW are using names like 'sunforge' 'fireknife' and 'starscythe' for the new Crisis Suit units. There's a reason you'll see veteran Tau players like myself using terms like 'the deathrain loadout' and 'the Helios build'. Those names are iconic and much loved within the Tau community, because WE came up with those names! We, the Tau community of old.
      Go to the forums of the early 2000's, and you'll see the original Tau players testing lists and theory crafting and reporting on wins and losses and coming up with these exact same loadouts. They've stood the test of time and remained viable throughout each edition, so we gave them cool names. Names that GW have officially cannonised now.
      I'm reading loads of comments from new players who are relieved GW have finally done this with the Crisis Suits. The old suits were way to intimidating for them, the choice paralysis was overwhealming, and the app made selecting the wargear for each suit a tedious nightmare.
      Overall I'm very glad GW finally did this. I've been asking them to do exactly this kind of change for over a decade now (yes I am that old 😝)

    • @mikek6298
      @mikek6298 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@In_Purple_CladI've not seen a single person claim that crisis suits are overwhelming. I've only ever seen the opposite, especially in 10th. People love crisis suits for their flexible utility, not their best gear.
      And if that's your opinion, then do you think we should also get rid of every single leman russ except the demolisher and punisher, and we should take away their ability to choose sponsons and top guns?
      Frankly I don't care about 20 year old theory crafting or what the common gear has ever been. I wanted literally any customization, especially in this edition. I can customize my units more in OPR now. Do you understand how comically upsetting that is? The paired down simple version of the game is less paired down and simple than these crisis units

    • @In_Purple_Clad
      @In_Purple_Clad 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mikek6298 Seems OPR will have quite the influx of players. That and people going back to 9th edition 4Ok - the heyday of variety and customisation.
      Genuinely nothing wrong with that. I've got friends who swear by 5th & 6th edition. For them that's when 40k peaked, and they're genuinely uninterested in all the new-fangled changes brought about by 8th. I happily play with them on special occasions. It's a blast. :) Same reason I play Horus Heresy with 'em as well. It's basically 7th edition 'done right'.
      There's no stigma in sticking with the edition that's right for you. Honestly I encourage it.
      What I will say is; the people who like the 'build-a-bear' Crisis suits tend to be a specific type of person. The kind who 'has' to create something that feels unique and personalised and special to them... even if in reality they're mading the exact same choice as everyone else.
      I think that's the heart and crux of the matter. Gundam games and Armoured Core games and 'build-a-bear' Crisis suits appeal to that specific type of player... and from what I've seen over 20+ years, they drive away the other types of player who get intimidated by choice overload. Or just wanna run something that 'looks' cool and sounds good in their head, but then accidentally get burned because they made the wrong choice. Customisation also doesn't mean anything to the 3rd type of player either- the ones who just want to skip to the end and use the best loadouts, 'cos they care more about winning games/ being on an even footing with their opponants.
      Basically I'm describing the 'Johnny', 'Timmy' and 'Spike' personality types made famous by Magic the Gathering players. Tau Crisis suits were always made with 'johnny' type players in mind, but their sheer level of customisation could be confusing/ uninteresting to 'Timmy' and 'Spike' type players. That's the best way I can describe what's happening now. GW are 'trying' to widen the appeal and make Suits interesting to all 3 player types. But I'll understand if they've removed too much of the customisation aspect. I understand that 'feeling' like you made a choice is still increadibly important. To Everyone, but especially to 'Johnny' type players, which to me it sounds like you are.

      The answer, outside of one unofficial tournament, has always been "no daisy chaining". However the more I research the factions and dive thru comment sections on videos like these, I empathize with veterans of 40k. Just bc my brain is too smooth to grasp the game rules, they shouldn't punish their current clientele by upending 7000% of the armies.

Also, with how the drones no longer need to be physically present, with every box you get your tactical drone army grows. The hard to acquire model stays, but the super easy one goes like the dodo.
