One thing I like about the Albrecht Durer is that they look very similar to Polychromos before wetting. Both the Caran d'Ache Museum and the Inktense are less true to color until dissolved.
I love the muted tones in the museum aquarelle ! Funny you were just the opposite. Different strokes
So fun watching you swatch these out and strange to see my charts on youtube! You are right Museum Aquarelle are the most pigmented. Have fun picking out your colors. Those swatch charts were just a small portion of all the colors they offer there is 76 in all, but I tried to give you a nice range to experiment with.

@lark I was told you provided the watercolor paper, I was interested which paper is it? I got the Supracolor II, didn't swatch them all, and I'm surprised to see that a lot of them are not very pigmented. I know the Museum Aquarelle is the best but I couldn't afford that. Also I thought the FC Albrecht Durer is also more pigmented, that's what I heard from others. I guess the best are the real watercolors. But I used the Neocolor II and for me they are very nice and robust.
@@judithf9297 I think I just used Canson XL paper. Yes, Museum Aquarelle are the most pigmented. Next would-be FC Albrecht Durer. And third the Supracolor II. I prefer the color palette of Supracolor II. There is a nice set of 24 watercolor pencils by Generals Kimberly. They dissolve very well.
I think the watercolor pencils are pigment based while the ink-tense pencils are dye based. Not 100% sure though. Thats why they can’t/ shouldn’t lift, once dried. Also Derwent has a separate line of watercolor pencils, that might be the reason why they feel different.
From Derwent website the Inktense pencils are pigment based.

Derwent inktense are not lightfast! Neither are they watercolor pencils. They are acrilyc ink watersoluble pencils. The whole point being they won't reactivate between layers. It's a unique medium on it's own.

Love, love, love this video! And also love it that you're freer to speak. Since you asked, shiraz is a grape used to make a deep-red wine (one of my favs). It's also called syrah.
Inktense is kind of a non-watercolor pencil, I think. Its pigments aren't meant to re-wet like watercolor pencil pigments do, though they *will* rewet to some degree despite Derwent claims to the contrary. I use Inktense mainly to add detail, so I like both that they re-wet less than watercolor pencils since I want a more controlled pigment AND I like like that they do re-wet a little, since they will soften their look with neighboring Inktense pigment and look painterly.
The Inktense pencil marks do not always vanish when brushed with water, so when I'm filling in larger areas, I don't apply the pencil directly. I pick up the pigment on a brush, either by stroking a pencil point or by making a "palette" of pencil pigments on a separate piece of paper, something I learned from Helen Campbell's YT tutorials. She's shown me the greater potential of the pencils and set me to creating Inktense-only paintings (currently looking terrible but that's not Helen's fault).

waaaait, now that you mention it.... i've seen some wines called shiraz! hang on, i think rosemary&co has a brush line called Shiraz. i wonder what's the connection there, hmmm. i don't drink so i all i know is the mainstream stuff... prosecco... champagne.... bordeaux? haha, someone should make a watercolour palette with wine names ;P

Susanavenir, your comment blows up a couple of preconceptions and you are absolutely correct! I'm very pleased to see that you are so objective and attentive. Yes, Inktense does rewet and lift, and the marks don't always vanish especially the blues. Some of the pigments in the industry are staining, some are not, and almost all blue pigments are staining, apparently.
I am finding that the Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils are quite a bit better with respect to marks disappearing, and they are nearly as vivid and non-rewetting as the Inktense.
And I really want to thank Vee for the work that went into this high quality video. I'm now a fan.

Yes, I agree that pigment information should be available for all color pencils. Including watercolor pencils and inktense. I know that pigment information is listed for every Caran D Ache Pablo pencil and available as well as Derwent Lightfast color pencils. You can bet that if they say Manganese or Ultramarines, it is made with those pigments as well as phthalocyanine s or Quinacridone s. I have more highest Lightfast pencils in my set of Faber Castell Albrecht Durer than my set of Caran D Ache Supracolor. My Supracolor is mostly only medium lightfast ratings.

waoo is one of the most interesting comments and about resistance to light. I'll write to Paint in Hiding in a comment to see if you can make a video showing the true lightfastness, exposing the samples made to light.

+1! Yes pigments codes should be provided for pencils, specially for artist range.
This was so helpful, thanks for doing this! I've only used Inktense (i LOVE my set) but as mentioned they are pretty permanent and don't reactivate. But it works for me and I like how bold and vibrant they are - any cheapie watercolor pencils I've tried in the past have literally paled in comparison and ended in frustration. I know they cost more but it's good to know that some of the Caran d'ache and others can be just as vibrant if I want something that behaves more watercolory. As always this was fun!

Happy new year! :D hope you're well~ i'm glad the vid's helpful :D yeahhh, i've only used faber castell's children's watercolour pencils, the red box one and those were horrible. i mean for children it's fine but it's the same frustration so i never got into watercolour pencils. but these ones in this video is like a game-changer for me. they're actually watersoluble haha~
@@PaintinHiding Exactly! I always assumed I just wasn't a pencil person and didn't understand the appeal (water or regular color) because I'd only worked with bad examples. A whole new world opens up when you get good tools! :)
This is the first video of yours that I have watched. It was so fun to watch despite its length. ❤ We are both on the same page. After watching ypu swatch the third page, I came to exactly the same conclusion. In addition to watching your comparison and other channels, I think that we are both on the same page: it is not the brand, but the individual colour pencil's performance that is important.
Overall there might be a brand preference, but I think now that open stock across brands that are non-toxic and dissolve well with good pigment payoff is the way to go.
It seems like there are worthwhile non-professional brands that are more appealing only because they are more affordable and their payoff is enough. However I think that a few select open stock from professional brands in addition to a bigger cheaper brand with enough color payoff might be the best budget option.

I love the Inktense pencils. My mums got me the full 72 set for Xmas this last holiday season because she saw they were on a really good deal. I also love seeing other people's take on them. These had been beeping on my radar for a while now and I was so excited to get my set. I've only just scratched the surface of what they can do. It'll be fun to see your journey as you use them more :)
oh no, i only have just the one inktense pencil. lol. so there won't be a journey vid on watercolored pencils i'm afraid. these swatches were from a kind subscriber as mentioned in the video
Thanks for this! This helps a lot in open stock selections!! The Museum Aquarelle are the most expensive of the Caran d’Ache, of course, right!? 😂. The Neocolor II’s are fun to use in a scribbling manner in mixed media applications and as dry watercolors for travel. Any of these can be scribbled out and taken in that form for travel which is an exciting application. As someone already mentioned the Inktense are ink based so do not move again after wetted, which could be an advantage depending upon what you’re using them for. The blocks are commonly used in fabric coloring applications! They probably are not as lightfast though due to being ink based. What a fun video and many thanks to your benefactor who provided much enjoyment and learning to both you and your TH-cam audience!

The violet pink is beautifull. As most museum pinks (some people don't like their pinks and violets, but I want them all along with albrech durers ones). But both could have better blues... Nice comparasion!
For me the museum penselen are really the best, they are soft and highly tinted and Very solubel. I have the landscape set +some of open stock. The neon olor are a bit less pigmented but i have a little box of 15 that i can take with me in nature...

To clarify on the Inktense pencils. The reason they feel so much different is because they aren’t a watercolour pencil.
They are ink.
Once the Inktense has dried you are unable to reactivate the ink. It is permanently set.

Oops, I somehow missed the first part. I'll go back and watch it later. 😂 Regarding Inktense: They are lovely colors and so much fun to draw/paint with, but they are ink rather than WC so that means once they dry, you can't do any lifting. You may have said this, I got interrupted by the phone as usual. 😂 Ok now that the video is done I have some thoughts. My personal fav is Albrecht Dürer but I have never tried the CD Museum Aquarelle. I absolutely love the Caran d'Ache Luminance color pencils, but those aren't water soluble. I only mention it because it tells me that CD is probably an excellent brand in other media. I checked Blick (a US art supply store that I order from often) and the Museum Aquarelle are slightly more expensive than the Supracolor Soft. A set of 12 Museum Aquarelle is listed for $38.06. The Supracolor Soft set of 12 is $28.10. Albrecht Dürer set of 12 is $23.10 and last, but not least the Inktense are $20.95 for a set of 12. These are just introductory sets and meant as an example of the approximate pricing of each. Please note that Blick's prices tend to be quite a bit lower than actual list price, probably because they can buy their stock in such large quantities that it lowers the cost on their end by quite a lot.
So rather than continue that overly long comment, I decided to add on a new one. lol The prices for individual pencils are higher than buying them in a set, but you have the bonus of picking which colors you want instead of taking what they think you want. Museum Aquarelle are $4.80 a pencil. Supracolor Soft are $2.97 each. Albrecht Dürer pencils are $2.65 each, and Inktense are $2.10 each. These prices are in US dollars and are the sale price, not the list price. Depending on where you shop, your mileage may vary. Plus I have no idea about exchange rates. This was a fun video to watch. I haven't played with my pencils in a while so you've inspired me to do just that.
thank you for all the prices Aeli! it's always cool to know how much things are in other areas of the world. i think if i ever get any of these, it'll be from jackson's since shipping from them is hands down the best option for me. a viewer commented in my previous Newbie pencil video that CD Supracolor Soft is transparent whereas CD Museum Aquarelle is more towards translucent. so i guess it depends what you're after.

You very kindly answered my previous question about what paper you use for these swatches, Canson XL, but that comes in different types, Watercolor and Mixed Media were two I found. Which of these particular types of the Canson XL do you use? Sorry to be a pain, lol

Intense are ink based and Supracolor are pigment based. That's why they feel different. 😊
As someone said on here inktence are pigment based and It states that on their website. I've seen loads of videoes saying they are dye based but no they are pigment!!!
I think i have a first bad impression with any water soluble pencil, probably since i was like 12 or 13ish and don’t know anything about them. I grown up with the neocolor 2 but never use them like a watersoluble product, and i generally preferred the neocolor 1 more than 2. I think there’s some pigment information in their official website, i remember the museum aquarelle and luminance have them, i believe faber castell also has them, but be prepared if you’re used to seeing watercolor single pigment you’re gonna be shock since most color have like 2 to 4 pigment in them

Hello, it would be interesting to see the reaction of these samples to exposure to light.
unfortunately this is my only source of reference so i wont be doing a lightfast test. i think you're better off asking another youtuber who has the actual pencils :)

it’s just a cheap brush from thailand called renaissance. i talked about it in my most used art supplies video 👍🏻
21:35 I like using the "pale" colors as a general pigment for the foreground or background. For example, I might use the pale blue as a base layer for underwater 🐠 scenes. It might also be good for a very cloudy sky. I'm also a rookie though, so take this advice with a grain of salt. 😂

Hello, since you reviewed these watercolor pencils, you still have the same favorites as you did? I’m not using watercolors,I’m just a colorist, I like to use watercolor or watersoluble pencils. I like the Inktense, the Museum Aquarelle and Supracolor II. I just got those not long ago. Someone is trying to talk me into getting the Faber Castell Albrecht Durer,but just about every review I found it says they are similar with the Supracolor II, but not quite as nice colors. and quality. What is your opinion a few months after you compared them? And how about the Neocolor II? Thank you
im afraid i cant be much help judith, sorry. the swatches on the papers u see in this vid were given to me by a subscriber and i literally only have one of each kind of pencil which doesn’t tell much. it might be better for u to ask an artist that actually has sets of those u want to know about. sorry~

@@PaintinHiding thank you. The Inktense blends away so beautifully on it. I have found with other papers I have tried the original pencil line doesn't wash fully away when you add water.

Technically the inktense doesn’t rewet at all. It’s pigment based ink, permanent when dry. The only way they rewet is if you put down too much pigment and the water doesn’t activate all of the pigment which you can’t see until or unless you put another wash over it, activated the bits of dry pigment that weren’t initially activated with water…..then it’s too late lol that’s why they’re called inktense and not watercolor pencils

Inktense is NOT watercolor it is water soluble INK … so comparing it to a Watercolor pencil is like apples to
