Some mineral colors seem to form an oxide layer that reminds me of how really rusty metal will flake off in big, crumbly, pieces. It doesn't want to re-wet, but the paint under that layer is usually okay. I think it's a pretty normal reaction to the air, just a bit annoying. I usually use a craft knife to score the surface of the paint if I notice it's doing that, and I have found that storing paints in a more 'airtight' container is better if they're going to be left alone for very long.

Hmm, this concerns me. I only have had one out of 52 pans that gave me problems, from day one upon unwrapping and that is Aquarius Black. Could not get it to activate at all at first. I thought maybe I either had a bad batch of that shade or there was still wax from the wax sheet in the wrapping. I still have issues with it now down halfway. I think it was a bad batch. My other colors seem fine, a few have shrunk away from the pan but no crusty bits and fewer just fine. I may dig into them a bit more though. Maybe just do some researching from time to time to keep them fresh, and of course use distilled water.

I haven’t tried Roman Szmal. Have you reached out to them? I wonder if they have had this issue before or otherwise have suggestions as how to rewet the dried paint.

I wouldn't say that there is an issue with the paints. Maybe your unreal expectation for something to be as good as new when you have left it to dry out & neglected it for 2 years. Your title could be deemed defamatory as you are misrepresenting the quality of the makers product.

I bought some White Nights pans, most of them work well, but one called Shakhnazarskaya Red is rock hard. I tried to soak it, but doesn't do much, I can barely scrape the surface.

Hi Vee! Thank you for popping in to share this tip. It explains something that I've noticed about a Roman Szmal Cyprus Burnt Umber in one of my main palettes. I don't use the color very often and I can tell that it's much drier than when it was new. The pigment has shrunk and separated from the walls of the full pan. Nevertheless, I'm glad that I spray the entire palette when using it even if I don't go for that color because it might be much worse if it weren't getting moisture at all. I had a vintage tube of Winsor and Newton Burnt Umber that I'm sure was at least 20 years old, and the paint is now so dry that it won't rewet at all. I would have to crush and mull the paint with gum arabic to resurrect the half pans that I poured from that old tube. So, I definitely think that this is the inevitable fate of many earth colors if they aren't used frequently or at all 😂.

Hmm... that's interesting, I have not seen this issue in any of my paints. I still have never tried Roman Szmal though. Glad you got a chance to post!

I have to say this is true, but it doesn't depend on brand. Some pigments will famously do that, I have this issue with my capuut mortum for RS but understand green from DS does the same thing for me 😢 and viridian is famous for this too

I had a similar problem with a pan of Raw Sienna Monte Amiata from the start. I purchased a new one from a different reseller which restock much faster and it was a breeze working with the new one. I might be wrong but I thought it was mainly due to it being an old stock because I have never faced the same issue again with the newer ones. Now I have doubts again...

I also had this issue in their Goethite and Viridian, specifically that the paints easily create undissolved chunks. I usually mist and let the water soak in before I paint, too. I had those paints for less than a year and used them regularly. The problem got worse as I got closer to the bottom and attempted to use them all at once. I don't want to be a DS stan, but the DS versions of those paints have better granulation, intensity, flat out. I use them mixed with honey then dried in pans and never had issues with rewetting. Some of RS's other paints, like their Quin Cherry, also have odd properties like a chalkiness/lightness. That said, I still have lots of RS on my pallette, it usually performs well, and I only know I love Goethite, Viridian, and Quin Cherry because I was able to acquire the RS versions first at a low price. It's just that it seems like they must be cutting certain corners to keep the unit price low, and for most paints that are staples on my palette it doesn't make sense to me to stick with them long term. For comparison, something like Van Gogh seems to have more dependable quality in their pans. I've gotten two of their palettes and never had issues like this, even though it's supposed to be closer to student grade. The main drawback is that the pigment selection isn't as nice and they lean more on convenience mixes/hues, including for paints like Burnt Sienna.

I have the same problem with Natural Sienna Monte Amiata. It’s very hard to rewet and it has particles in it. I’m kinda using it for its chunky texture.

It happened to me with the Viridian. Soaked it for hours and it's still dead :(

Mmmm 🤔 no my roman some of my white knight s do this raw umber burnt Siena raw sienna develop this hard top that needs tons of scrubbing and water 😟

I use the goethite and the caput mortem in a palette that I use pretty regularly, and they have never had this issue. It's probably just bc they went so long wothout any water. Actually, i only have two roman small colors, and those are the 2. 😂

A friend sent me some samples of Roman Szmal earth colors. They were hard to rewet as well and I wondered if they were so low tinting. I will soak them and then try again!

Hi Vee! Thanks for the video. Hope you're doing well. I also had issues with the colors Caput Mortuum and Hematite Violet Shade. When I was checking my palettes, I noticed something unusual. In my case, both colors formed an extremely dry layer that was very difficult to rewet and had low tinting strength, but the paint underneath was fine.

Hi Vee, hope you and your family are doing well. I have over 70 Roman Szmal paints and the only one I've had a problem with is the Viridian. I was able to rehydrate it and added some gum arabic and can now use it but it does have small granules in it that I don't know how to get rid of. The only other paint I have a real issue with is the Schmincke Volcano Yellow in the tube, I don't know exactly what is in that tube, and it is yellowish, but I can't get it to act anything like paint.

Dear Vee, so nice to hear from you. Thanks for mentioning this. I had not come across such a situation. Burnt Sienna PBr7 is usually quite vibrant, same as Caput Mortuum PR102 -at.least in other brands. Please let us know how you are doing. Perhaps in the community post if making videos is harder. These the the phthalo blue types: 15:0, 15:1, 15:2, 15:3 (green shade), 15:4, 15:5 (never seen this anywhere), 15:6 (red shade), 16 (duller, turquoise), 17 (cyan, apparently not lightfast).
