Delta closing their hub at CVG was an incredible stroke of luck for us who fly out of there. It drove down prices by a lot. I think CVG is grossly underrated versus most airports in the US.

Glad to see it in your Series. Cool CVG fact; I believe CVG is the only MAJOR airport that serves a city in a different state, could be wrong though.

About 10 years ago I traveled to Barcelona, Spain on business. On the day of my return flight it was blinging hot. And since it was summer, the terminal was crowded with people on holiday. Put those two factors together >> I got very sick. Without even realizing it at first. Suddenly, a staff member came up to me and said, "Come this way, please." I thought there was a problem with my ticket. 😱
She escorted me to the airport's medical center. The doctor there did everything she could to relieve my distress. Later, an attendant took me in a wheelchair back to the depatures area. There was still time to board my original flight and get home on schedule.
Always grateful for the eagle eyes of the gate attendant, and the care of the doctor. Jeb, don't overlook some of the unseen services that airfields have ready "just in case." You never want to need them, but so glad they are in place when the time comes. 👏👏👏

Make sure you add IND to the list. Since the new terminal opened it has always been on the best airport list. If you could time it to visit during a Midwest winter storm, you will really be impressed by the behind the scenes operations; the runways fill up with the diversions from ORD & DTW

CVG will always hold a special place for me......My first solo trip on an airplane was back in 2009 when I was 15 right before my Freshman year in High School was RIC-CVG-TUL and still remember when Concorse C was strictly Comair......I probably flew on a CRJ-200 and thought it was the coolest thing in the world to fly on one of these small jets.

I think it’s fascinating just how extensive the operations of an airport can be. There’s so much more to airports than passenger traffic. It would be great to see you do one of these for a large hub such as Atlanta or Newark. It would be even greater to see you do a UK based version when things calm down!

I was in my 18-wheeler picking up near CVG this morning. Got to see a rare sight of a 727 taking off just a few hundred feet overhead. You definitely can’t beat the sound it makes! According to PlaneFinder it was N724CK belonging to Kalitta. First flew in 1970!

    • @HarvestmanVinyl
      @HarvestmanVinyl 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Kalitta Charters II still has a few 727s in regular service for DHL - N724CK, N726CK and N729CK. Not uncommon to see N725CK, aka "Air Horse One" - used to transport race horses - out on the ramp at CVG.

Calgary, AB (YYC) has a viewing area on the south side of Runway 17R/35R. It has picnic tables and displays of aircraft types and liveries. When we visit Calgary, we like to pick up food from Peter’s Drive In (great burger joint) and go sit and watch planes while we eat.

In recent months we have flown out of CVG on SW to Phoenix, Delta to Orlando (MCO), Allegiant to Orlando (SFB), British to London (Heathrow), and we have a June flight booked to Paris, so I think it is safe to say we consider it along with IND our "home" airports and having flown to a good part of the world and to/through almost every major US airport we can also state without too much bias that they are both in the top tier of airports when everything is considered. Security is efficient and generally friendly. check-in staff are really good at both, gate crew are legible and clear with announcements and directions, restrooms are much cleaner than many, concourses are wide and seating at gates is more plentiful than many, restaurants provide multiple options and with one notable recent exception tend to be quick, baggage claim is large enough, and well I could go on, but every time we travel it seems we return knowing how blessed we are.
IF you want to hear recent horror stories I would start with Toronto or Frankfurt...LOL

    MSP- Twin Cities International!
On a lighter note, in 2005 I returned from Nassau, Bahamas through CVG. A large snow storm at my hub of MSP canceled my Delta flight and they rebooked me on a NWA Avrojet the next day. In total, i spent 16.5 hours in a quiet corner of CVG...ooof

I think you should try and visit Willow Run airport (YIP) in the Detroit area. It was where the B24s were built and it serves as a home base for Kalitta Charters, USA Jet Airlines and Ameristar. DC9s, 727s and Freighter MD80s can be seen there and I happen to work for one of them and might be able to get you some ramp access around the DC9s and 727s

CVG and Delta have a rocky past. When Delta was at its peak it was known for aggressively undercutting competition until the competitor pulled out. They could do that because Cincinnati was home to many Fortune 500 companies and many passengers were flying on behalf of their company. As Delta fell many of the Fortune 500 companies relocated to better served areas. In recent years, cargo has kept the airport buoyant while passenger traffic has began to rebound thanks to low cost providers. It really is a tragedy what happened to passenger service, but Delta didn't price flights for the average traveller.

In a similar kind of video to this, I would be very interested in seeing more about mail operations at airports. In you video about baggage at ATL last year you showed mail being loaded into that 757. That's not something you think or hear about very often with commercial aviation, yet it is why we have the three legacy carriers today.
I don't know if it would even be possible for you to film a video on this, due to security reasons, but it's something that I think would go along well with this series, talking about the parts of airports, and aviation in general that are not often seen.

STL used to have a plane spotting area across from the end of 12R-30L, but it closed after 9/11 because it was too close to landing and departing aircraft, posing too great a risk from shoulder-fired missiles. When I was a kid, we used to lie on the car hood and watch aircraft land and take off right above us. It almost felt like we could reach up and drag our fingers along the bottom of the fuselage.

It would be great if you visited MAN/EGCC - my local airport! It also has a spotters park like at CVG, plus many more great spots!

If you like cargo, check out the FDX hub at MEM after the passenger terminal is renovated.

I, for one, would have loved to see a lot more of the DHL/Prime Air (Amazon) operation. You may also want to check your history. DHL landed in CVG well more than (I think you said) 2 years before moving to Wilmington (after buying Airborne Express) then coming back. They had their first CVG HUB on the North West end of the airport long before there was ever a thought of building the new HUB at the South East corner. Just drove by there today and turns out FedEx has put in a facility right on the spit that used to be the DHL HUB.

All the airline mergers inevitably resulted in some cities being de-hubbed, and it's interesting to see how the airports adapt afterwards. At CVG, it seems they've really found their place with cargo. Delta is still the dominant passenger carrier with the greatest market share. In my opinion, the difference between a hub and focus city is that a hub is designed for connecting passengers, while a focus city operates flights to a carrier's hubs, as well as point to point routes, but is not used for connections. While low-cost carriers like Allegiant and Frontier picked up some of the slack, I think it's unlikely the airport will ever see hub-era passenger numbers, simply due to the lack of connecting passengers.

DTW and MSP are now the connecting hubs for Delta, which all used to be Northwest hubs before the merger.

Austin Bergstrom has a viewing park too. That would be a good airport to do too.

I may be a bit biased but I'd love to see you cover either of the 2 major airports in Phoenix, either PHX and/or AZA

I’m sure it’s in other comments, but CVG is actually located in Hebron, KY, in Boone County. The airport board is located in Covington, KY, in Kenton County.

I recommend going to Anchorage Ted Stevens airport. The number of 747s flying there is insane.

You should go to MSP airport. They just went through a major renovation. And it is a major delta hub.
