Is Aspen Airport the USA's Most Extreme Airport?

  • Aspen/Pitkin County Airport may be the most extreme airport in the USA. It’s got a relatively short and narrow runway, surrounded by mountains, subject to unpredictable weather, and requires unusual operations to safely operate. In short, simply getting to Aspen is an adventure because it is the most extreme airport in the USA.
    0:00 Introduction and Overview
    2:15 Departing Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport for the Extreme Aspen Airport
    4:14 Onboard American Eagle CRJ700 for the Extreme Aspen Airport
    6:08 Beginning the Extreme Aspen Airport Landing
    6:50 Final Approach for the Extreme Aspen Airport Landing
    7:57 Exploring Aspen Airport Terminal
    8:46 Aspen Airport Boarding, Taxi, and De-Icing
    10:23 Extreme Aspen Airport Take-off
    11:20 Landing at Denver International Airport
    In this video, I’ll highlight some of what makes Aspen Airport the most extreme airport in the USA. We flew into Aspen Airport with American Eagle on a CRJ-700 from Dallas and back out on a United Express CRJ-700 to Denver. Our flights to and from Aspen Airport were smooth and on-time, while also offering the opportunity to see the incredible Rocky Mountain landscape laid out below us. Flying in the Rocky Mountains presents some unbelievable views for passengers heading to Aspen. The views from the windows were some of my most memorable -- it's impossible not to be amazed byRocky Mountain Flying!
    We explore the approach and departure from Aspen Airport along with a bit of the action inside the Aspen Airport terminal.

    SkyWest pilot here! The interesting thing about our Aspen ops is that the pilots have what's known as a DMA schedule (Designated Mountainous Airports). The bulk of their flying each month is into these DMA airports which have these special departure/arrival procedures. Not to mention that they are re-tested on these (either in the simulator or on the line with a line check captain) every six months. In other words, these pilots go into Aspen and other DMA airports multiple times a week and truly know what they're doing!

      Many years ago, we flew into Aspen from DFW on a charter 727. We landed so hard that oxygen masks popped out of the bins. Not sure if that was the direct reason but I was glad the landing gear didn’t collapse.

    I work Aircraft Maintenance in Aspen for Skywest Airlines (Regional Carrier for both United and American in Aspen). I would like to thank you for flying with us. At 8:51 you can see me assisting the Ramp Crew in Marshaling the Aircraft next to yours out in the morning. I am off to the left of the aircraft you were boarding to Denver. I even fired up the aircraft you flew out on and warmed it up for everyone that morning.

    Great TH-cam as always. I was a Dispatcher for Frontier Lynx Aviation, and we sent five flights a day from Denver. Every flight was closely monitored for safety of flight. I canceled many flights, delayed and diverted more then I can count. Fantastic Airport! I loved every headache that came with it from an airline operations side.

  • @saxmanb777
    @saxmanb777 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Fun fact: the CRJ-700 is the only commercial jet that has the required single engine performance to go into ASE. (That and the Q-400, I believe.) The real kicker are the special "extraction" procedures the pilots have to do when one engine fails after takeoff or on approach. SkyWest is the only airline that currently operates in there too right now flying for AA, DL, and UA.
    And yes, do one about DFW, my home airport. I may even have some contacts for you if you like.

    • @jasminejohnston6393
      @jasminejohnston6393 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I worked at DFW for 10 years, and yes, taxing an airplane from one corner to another is about 5 miles. It's been improved but gridlock still happen. At Aspen, if it wasn't for the town itself, takeoffs could be allowed from runway 15, but you can only turn left after takeoff, and the town or, rich and famous residents would not allow it. Awesome video.

    I am excited to see and hear your thoughts on this airport. It is my local airport and I have been a part of the 2 year at this point vision committee for redesigning the airport and discussing whether it should be transitioned into a full AGD3 airport or left how it is with a wingspan restriction, as well as looking at how to update the terminal and infrastructure to meet modern demands in efficiency and customer experience. This has been a very interesting and sometimes controversial process but it will be interesting to see where this airport is headed in the future. It is such a unique airport with an even more unique community that both wants to be the same as it was 20 years ago while also wanting to move into the future. It will be very interesting to see what you think of our airport as someone with an outside perspective but also having a high level of understanding and appreciation of aviation. I hope you enjoyed the airport and your stay. All of your videos are always wonderful and interesting to learn more and more about aviation. Thank you again for all of your in-depth looks at airports and aviation.

    Juneau Alaska on Alaska Airlines. Coming in from the north, head straight for a mountain, hard left turn and decent to line up with the single runway that is located adjacent to the lake with floatplanes taking off and landing. Check it out sometime.

    This is a great series idea. next, I'd suggest Saint Thomas, and if you stay, go to the top of the water island bunker, you can get 360 degree shots of planes taking off! It's also a cool approach, where it seems like you are landing on water (if sitting on the right side)

    Aspen is a crazy airport. Gilgit and Skardu airports say: hold our ice creams. 😁😁

    LSGS in Sion, Switzerland is more extreme on several measures. *Much* taller mountains, much closer on both sides, requiring an approach I/P that is 27 miles away and 10,000 ft above the runway elevation. Special certification is required for both the aircraft and the pilot.

    Great video Jeb! Wow Aspen is amazing but since I’m not rich I’ll probably never fly their on a Gulfstream someday like I dream of! 😆 Also American Eagle has brought back the CRJ-200 now! WHY! I don’t understand but still. Also if I ever visit ASE I will probably try to make an in depth behind the scenes #INSIDEAIRPORTS video at Aspen. Finally at 5:42 that’s the music Paul Stewart uses! 😂😊
    Cheers my friend 🥂

    The Rock Springs Wyoming airport is pretty cool also. It sits atop a bluff.

    DFW has a feature I'd like to see at all major hubs...digital signs outside the bathrooms the tell you how many stalls are available. Also the red/green light over the stalls.

    Jeb Brooks, I work in this area regularly. That airport is a good one to plane watch at, But the Eagle/Gypsum/Vail airport gets some pretty good usage too!

    If you're looking for a place that includes everything you said about Aspen, but is even more remote and unique give Ketchikan Alaska a visit. Definitely the coolest airport I've ever had the pleasure to visit.

    Next time you're in Canada check out YCG/CYCG! The weather minimums to land are about 3000ft AGL, very tight valley that we service in a DH8.

    Nice review! I flew the CRJ700 for PSA Airlines. Love the aircraft! You’re right about the 200. Very underpowered! Everything wrong w 200, they fixed on 700! I love it! I never have flown into Aspen, but I teach pilots to fly Cessna Citation Xs and Mustangs. So we practice in the sim all the time!
    My brother flies for Skywest and flies the 700 into there a lot! It’s really fun but you have to always be very focused!
