TCM, your style of interview is SO good. You have a way of being completely on the same page with the artist, engaged with their words, while also asking subtle questions that get them to do 90% of the talking. Very engaging for viewers too, because your style helps the artists really say insightful things or tell good, relevant stories. Great interview. Never new much about JasonMartin but after hearing his history I realize I have heard of him. Been a very long time though. Nice work JasonMartin! It can be rough staying alive and relevant in music but you doing it.
That's love! thank you, lo. My favorite thing about watching interviews is the interviewee. The interviewer comes second. I try to give people a platform to get their ideas out.
Jason Martin, been following him for a bit since "The Great Lyrical Shakedown of 2024" . He seems to be direct, humble, and down to earth....A real man's man that's about the music and family. Appreciate his perspective.
This is “one o’ dem ones” (shout out to DJ Hed). I’m just starting it, and I KNOW that I’m going to listen deeply over the next few days. I’m hearing nuggets from the jump. Good work, Justin!
I MUST give you your flowers! This was such an incredible conversation to watch! I’ve been listening to Jason Martin since 2014 and it’s beautiful to see him in this space and continuing to create! Thank you and please know you are appreciated in this culture of ours! Much success! Ase’
Ahhh... the perks of being a member. 😎 Early access to another dope conversation. I must have watched 4 or 5 different interviews with Jason Martin in the last few months. I can honestly say I think he gave more in this one than any of the others. It's seems to be because the interview style in this video is more conversational where the others the questions seemed to maybe guide a direction or force a structure. I don't know. Whatever the reason the content that comes from these conversations is exceptional.
@@TheCompanyMan I'm not going to explain the domestication of dogs to the man, but if you could kindly send Jason a picture of a Sand Cat or Black footed cat and tell him they are native to different regions of Africa, that would be awesome.
@@ArtsyBlazer (Weeps in science but acknowledges the privilege that is having taken a couple semesters of science in college). You can't prove a negative, but as far as conspiracy theories go I'm ranking this one low on the probability list.
Man that last conversation about the splits between collaborations in hip hop vs pop and other genres legit blew my mind. I had no idea it was like that. I definitely hope that changes. Imagine the things that could and would happen! This conversation was so informative and extremely funny lol. I really enjoyed this.
WHHHHHHAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!! Been listening to JasonMartin since 2012 and seeing him at the popout was so great to see. They hate us cuz they ain't us.
The "South" conversation cracked me up! I've got my own phrase "East Coast Mid-South" referring just to VA, KY, NC, WV, MD, and southern PA, all of which are so tremendously effected by NYC diaspora that they have as much in common with North as the South. People don't realize how far NYC is South compared to the rest of the State, and how major cities on the coast got the Chinatown bus that just takes a daily 10-hour trip straight there for cheap. I grew up in Hampton Roads (Pharrell, Pusha, Missy, Timbaland) which is just a bunch of military bases built on a swamp, so if you're not some ancient white plantation descendent, your family ain't from here. It's people from all over the world, but especially NYC.
Justin, You absolutely, “rock a bye baby” this interview. I am so impressed by the whole renovation Hip Hop is surgically getting. So freakin necessary. Brick by brick, we will rebuild now that the party is dead.
This format is good Justin, the setting. It's like the Zane Lowe Kanye interview, sitting together, not out of frame like a DJ, very intimate setting. I know this is problem's house but I think investing in making your backdrop something like this would be fantastic. It was great looking at you laugh together lmao.
I’ve lived in NC for almost 50 years. We’re a southern state indeed on the east coast. 🙂 The 2024 rap battle put Jason on my radar. I’ve enjoyed all his interviews so far. The battle put Justin on my radar. His channel is one of my go-to-channels. Jason and Justin are intelligent people. I love listening to and learning from intelligent humans. 🥰
Thank you for the most entertaining and memorable interview. The closing of this interview was the most impactful when Jason speaks on how rappers became nonexistent.
Oh this is gonna be funnnn. 🤣🤣 Just based on the clip of y'all laughing over the lawsuits and the way Jason is already laughing 38 seconds into this, love his energy!
What happened is Kendrick took the blinders off the culture. That’s the shock not that he won because I never thought that Drake would win against Kendrick it was impossible for him to unless Kendrick didn’t fight back. Also, Kendrick said what many people were thinking and a lot of people are shocked that he said it. A lot of people were saying that this was a stunt and they were going to reunite for a bigger bag, but Kendrick stood on it. If that didn’t shock anyone else I was. Kendrick is just lyrical better, he makes better songs, and is more real and likable. He just is culture.
Kendrick Lamar is talking those in the black community who sit around and laugh with these comedians. He wasn't talking to the comedians! 🤦🏾♀️ 1:23:39 Exactly!
Didn’t know company man went to the pop out. That was my first show ever crazy to think how many influential people were there. Edit: for clarification I am not one of those individuals 😂😂😂
Easily one of the best interviews on your channel. Shout out to Jason Martin for the incredible feat that him, and the rest of this new generation of artists are pushing. This new sound from the West Coast. This is definitely a defining moment for us. 🫡✊
Exactly. We don’t judge like that. Why do they come here and do that. And every city has its own style too. City to City their rap style is different. Vallejo rap and Richmond rap can be different and it’s separated by a bridge.
Im happy to be here! Just wanted to hop in and support your channel, as your quality of content is very well put together and I appreciate you for everything that's "happening". 😉🥳
Jason Martins’ album Chupacabra best west coast album of the year! Listen to that album and compare it to Kendrick or Snoops or Ab soul..y’all find out!
The dog segment was wild 😂😂😂. For us who grew up in Europe in the 90's, our idea of American hip hop was West Coast hip hop, Death Row artists etc. Movies like Boyz n the Hood and Menace II Society cemented the West Coast. Even today artists like Snoop are respected. The West coast legacy and imprint is undeniable. I still don't know where the West Coast hate narrative comes from. Is this a real thing in the US??
Yes. I think a lot of it is the liberal west, that certain parts (or factions) hate. Also, we are arrogant out here. We love the west coast, we know it’s amazing to live out here, (expensive) but amazing, and some don’t like that arrogance. The same arrogance you hear in West coast hip hop.
@Kareyn2 got it. I always took what you call arrogance, as pride. I like that West Coast pride and identity. A lot of black culture gets diluted for mass consumption. West Coast artists should rebrand and reintroduce us to their culture as a unique selling point instead of going pop and doing what everybody else is doing. That's where I disagree with JMartin. There should be a West Coast sound imo.
I think a big part of it also is that throughout the 90s the biggest hip hop magazines were located in new york so many of the things printed about rap was kinda slanted east and away from the west (and the south for the first half of that decade).
But that's the thing, when ppl from other parts bring up the Westcoast they always refer to what happened 20-30 years ago. We remember when Jason Martin was Problem but y'all are just now meeting him.
1:39:05 I can’t even tell you all my favorite moments in this interview, Justin…but finally this~and it was your analysis of the issue ftw [humiliation kink-tehehe]!😂 and you uttered the assertion so casually😅 It’s all happening, Justin~it’s all happening right here in your spot😂 Brilliant interview~and as a Seattle west coast sista, watching this interview and understanding the language, the humor, and the perspective…I see why “they” hate. We are def special black folks out this way lol ~thanks for this one, and as always, your organic and brilliant interview style💚🙏🏽 I’m claiming you for the west coast too!! Haha
Is the Pacific Northwest and the Bay Area “West Coast”? I’ve never been to Southern California, but most of my favorite music is from Southern California. I love you. I’d never hate on the west coast!
Nurses moved out of Cali then come back here as travel nurses to make $ and talking ish the whole time they’re here. 🙄 Then I got nurse friend who came here as a traveler after losing her place in Katrina hurricane and ended up staying here. Instead of being grateful to be here, still talking…ish about Cali and yelling “Roll Tide”. Man go back there please! I was born here and grew up as a kid in the Bay Area. The good and bad and ugly, I love it. I still live in Cali and can’t stand it when people talk ish. But yet, like he said, we love everybody else when we travel. Truth!
@ I’m old. Music I brought during travels was Spice 1, Sugar Free, Mac Dre, 3 x Crazy (before Keak went solo) and yes E-40 but that’s who folks know. I had a CMW tape “It’s a Compton Thang” the cassette was blue. We bumped that when we hot boxed and beat was hard with a shhhhooooop sound. I’m dating myself = old.
Different home training or no home training got people feeling like they can do dumb ish without consequences. Don’t want the ass whoop’n or any mess with your $ don’t go there. Period.
Regarding the segment on Drake’s lawsuit, he’s not really fighting Kendrick, he’s fighting the label. If the label won’t keep him at the top forever, Drake’s threatening to force legal scrutiny of their payola schemes and lose them billions. He’s trying to make them an offer they can’t refuse. Think Homelander taking over Vought in The Boys, except Homelander is named Aubrey and his super power is jailbait vision.
This is one of those "It's All Happening" situations I've been hearing about isn't it

Thanks CED! Jason drops so many jewels. I loved what he had to say.
"Your mind is through the roof" is pretty cool praise! Great interview!
