I agree that this is a fun episode, and it is the first not to be scripted by Richard Carpenter, as Series 3 was twice the length of its predecessors and so other writers were brought in. Foremost among these was Anthony Horowitz, the writer of this episode, who was at an early stage in his career back then but has gone on to be very successful.
It's amusing that the Round Table appears in the very first shot, but I remember it taking me a while to guess what was going on the first time I saw this. In any case, it's a well plotted tale with a very satisfying resolution, and good performances all round. Did you recognise David Rappaport from Time Bandits?

Cyril Cusack as the father, a distinguished old actor. And Jeremy Sinden who plays guest character Mortimer was Gold Two in Star Wars (1977), plus a whole load of other stuff; he sadly died relatively young.

I've been to Caerleon, which, as you say, is famous for its Roman ruins. I think Caerleon and Camelot come from different Arthurian traditions that have become conflated over the years. Caerphilly Castle is also nearby, and very impressive, but I don't think it is the location used here.

@@scotbotvideos That's why I used the word "traditions" rather than "sources." I'm not sufficiently familiar with Arthurian scholarship to debate the minutiae of the origins of the story. I haven't read The Gododdin, but I wonder if the name of Arthur was an anachronistic addition to the story at a later date? I do remember reading the story of Canonbie Dick, which locates the resting place of King Arthur as being in a cave somewhere in the Scottish Borders. I don't think I've been anywhere that wasn't above trading on spurious associations to generate footfall. I guess the medieval church got in on the tourist business early with all its saints and relics and pilgrimages to holy places.

This is a lovely episode. There are several interesting female characters in RoS - Marion, Meg, Morgwyn of Ravenscar and others - but I think besides Marion, Isadora is my favourite and is played very well by (I think) by Catherine Harrison.
I always thought Will would be a good match for Isadora. 🤔 I like to imagine what might have happened to some of the characters too.

It was lovely how much you enjoyed this episode and how excited you were at every revelation. And all your guesses were spot on. The only thing wrong with this story - no Gisburn! Which is probably just as well really

I have no memory of this episode at all, but since moving to Northern England, I have always been fascinated by the beauty and history of Wales. I actually used to work in Chester, when the Roman amphitheatre was being excavated and loved how many periods of history were preserved and still in use. (I used to bank at a modern commercial bank that you could access the Chester branch by using a plank gangway connected to the Anglo-Saxon city wall. My very favourite castle of all time is still the one I experienced first, Conwy. The whole atmosphere in North Wales is magical, as if the 21st century still coexists with every other time that has come before. Looking for RoS filming locations, I see that Chepstow Castle and Caldicot Castle were used for exteriors in this episode.

A bank accessed by gang plank from old city walls sounds fascinating.
I think this episode may feature Kidwelly Castle as well. I have a book about castles and Kidwelly Castle looks very familiar.

When Will reaches the top of the rope and steps onto the battlement you can see the tread of his boots. Whoops.

It always makes me quite happy that Jason Connery got to play Robin Hood as his father had played Robin at the end of his life in Robin and Marian, it just seems karmic.

You are one smart Cookie Alexa you worked out it was King Arthur and the Knights Of the Round Table long before the plot even got there not for the first time!

10:22 The block of wood Robin (Robert) takes out of his chest would have challenged even the most skillful archer to hit it! Robin (Robert) would more likely have got an arrow in the face!

Hi Alexa. Seeing the classical movies you like, and your interests, I recommend you (first time) watching the movie 'The Watcher in the Woods' (1980). Definitely watch the 1980 movie, and not the 2017 remake.

His suicide was tragic but not unforeseeable given his prior attempt. He generally felt unloved and lay on his back in a California field staring at the sky, probably imagining being with Adonai (The Jewish god he adored), before shooting himself in the chest! If Adonai exists then hopefully David is with him right now.

I did think watching this that this is kind of an awkward episode for you, as I thought you were always going to get the "twist" more than half an hour before the writer intended anyone to - sooner, it turned out. Still plenty to enjoy in this, though. Thank you, been watching these videos from the start, thought I'd comment for the first time.
Oh, but I'm afraid I called bagsies (how widespread is that as a phrase?) on Lady Isadora some years ago - not that it had any result, alas. And Blake's 7's Jenna. Sorry. 🙂

@@alexachipman Ah, well, might have to concede that one. My medieval skills are variable. Can swordfight a bit, but haven't been on any kind of equestrian beast (a Blackpool donkey, in this case) since I was about 3. I would probably ride a horse about as well as another horse would. 😀
